It depends on the game- For example, MGS wasn't emulated properly due to sound glitches. Apparently, some Star Trek game also works now. Games with CDDA are also still broken. I'd like to add this fix, but according to zeromus, I'd have to master the CD system of the PSX to do so.

I don't know if this helps, but it was simply a 19" monitor turned sideways, so it should just be 3/4, at least in the physical arcade machine. Encoding, no idea...

Very nice so far! One thing that I was thinking about: how difficult would it be to manipulate Selphie's The End limit break? Even if it takes, say, 10 seconds of waiting to manipulate, it would instantly end even lengthy boss battles and be worth it.
Thanks! Thus far, I haven't needed the End - the only battle it might save time in is Diablos - and it is incredibly difficult to get. Thus far, I've only found 1 random position (of the 256) where it works, and you must be crisis level 3 - which is also dependent on randomness. Plus, earlier in this thread, people requested it not get abused. I think my solution to Diablos is cooler anyway.

The encounter mechanics have been fully worked out by darkwasabi, the speedrunner - I am using those extensively, in a script. I'll have more explanation in the submission text.

So, I need 4 more AP going into Dollet - This is why: Shiva - I-Mag Refine +30 AP Quezocotal - Card +40 AP Ifrit -20 AP Fasticolon-F -6 AP ??? -4 AP Shiva - Boost +10 AP Ifrit - HP-J +50 AP 6 G-Soldiers -6 AP Anacondaur -4 AP Shiva - Str-J +50AP Quezocotal - Card Mod +80 AP Biggs/Wedge/Evolret -18AP Siren L Mag Rf +30 AP Diablos -20 AP Diablos - Time Mag RF +30 AP Fake President -20 AP Two Soldiers -2 AP Ifrit - Str +20% +60 AP Iguinion -20 AP So, at this point, I'll have just enough AP to Refine the Quistis card into Samantha Souls, and then into triples. This will be just in time for the Seifer/Edea battle. If I don't get that 4 AP, I'll waste the 18 AP available from the Biggs/Wedge/Elvoret battle. The question is how to easily get 4 AP without wasting time.

Out of curiosity, how much time is saved (real-time) by going to the store and buying those items, as opposed to waiting? Also, the 1-up dropping was pretty dang cool. Oh, and I think this will be the first TAS to gain achievements.

No one in this thread is judging anything. They are posting their opinion, which is the point of this thread. You arguing with them every post that they should like your movie is getting you nowhere. We know your opinion on the matter, as you've said it numerous times. Let others post theirs, without you arguing every single post.

This means that the audience will decide whether or not they want to make an exception for a movie that uses continues, as they will be seen like cheat codes.

Reading through this thread, I think the majority (but not vast, by any means) sees the similarity between the use of cheat codes and using coins. Also, I heard everyone saying that this poll was biased, and I must agree. To that end, I consider 'rare' to be superfluous, and think the generally excepted answer is "No with exceptions, as decided by the community through voting on movies and responses in game threads." Luckily, the wording in the rules already suited my purposes. Thus, the rule has been added, but the wording that it is not strict will stay. (http://tasvideos.org/Rules.html) I think that this will suit everyone. Thanks for all the responses.

It also depends on the RNG. In the case of sequential RNGs, (fire emblem, Shining Force 2, Alien Hominid, Shining Soul 2, and numerous others) there is a much easier way to track the RNG, without knowing the formula. Once you figure out it sequential, and you've isolated a frame in which you know only a single RNG execution happens, a quick lua script can dump all the RNGs to a file. That is what I do, when I don't want to dig into a game's ASM.

I partly agree with this viewpoint, because reading disassembly is not for the faint of heart. However, if you have a specific goal, and you have either good skills or good support (by asking questions here) or both, then you can get quite far by trying to investigate specific questions. For example, I recently discovered the algorithms for item drops and soul drops from Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow; this was entirely done by disassembling the code, using vba-sdl. It took bloody ages, but it was worth it. Having a specific goal - the soul drop code - helped keep me focussed and keep my mind on the task at hand..
Yeah, I did a similar thing with Shining Force... You had better LOVE the game, because you will be spending countless hours on one game, with information that will only really be worthwhile for one TAS. I think the sum total hours I spent on SF is equal to the sum total hours I've spent on every other TAS I've worked on. (tangent).

It doesn't have to be stored in RAM if it's decompressed to the disk.
Wow, so you'd then instead waste the time to have the program execute alternating read writes to hard disk? If you are going to be TASing/playing a game, and have your archive of PSX games, why not just manually unzip it once? I hadn't thought of the issues zeromus raised, and thus, I rescind my impossible challenge accepted... (I really just wanted to post that image anyway.) There are far more pertinent issues in PSXjin to worry about, such as games freezing on attempting to load non-existing CDDA channels. ... and the lack of a pop-up Hair stylist. I knew I was missing something.

Yeah, that was my crappy encode, and not the game. The game in the emulator looks much fatter. Hence why I avoid encoding like the plague.

Looking at the ROM to find an RNG is difficult, looking at the ROM to understand glitches is many levels of difficulty of that. To date, I believe final fighter is the only person who has directly explored a glitch in a ROM, and figured out how to exploit it. I think this path will find you very discouraged, as a warning. Attempt to TAS the game with just ram watch, and at most lua.

Lastly, does anyone know why the game would actually FORBID selling the arcade game in North America? It sounds like that's a silly way to lose a bunch of potential business.
For arcade games, I go for the 'base rom' which is usually 'World'. To do the US version, you would need both mercs.zip and mercsu.zip. I've been doing that since TMNT, and this is the first time someone has noticed. I figured the 'base rom' was the best to use.
I think that he is referring to the message that is displayed at the beginning of the game.
Err, yeah, I guess I didn't finish my explanation - Mercs was available in the american market, but with a different ROM set - the mercsu rom set. That warning is sort of their version of regional encoding. Since each of the regions listed has its own rom set, yadda yada.

Yes, the jeep section I used fire probably too much. However, for normal shots, every button press = 3 shots.
* The characters have worse weapons for more stages in the run.
The first 3 levels, the bosses all die to bombs anyway. Also, the max damage any of those weapons do is 6, as opposed to 5. Not worth getting them unless they are on route. Also, the flame thrower only does 5. I picked it up because I felt it added to entertainment more than strength.
* Would taking damage be faster in some spots? For instance, the Genesis run uses damage to go through lasers and to skip fighting some vehicles.
The lasers I have to wait for in level 5 are insta-kill in the arcade. Otherwise, I preferred a cleaner version, with no damage.
Another question: would this run obsolete the Genesis version of Mercs? Generally, the precedent here is to only keep the original version of the game when the two versions have the same gameplay (however, there's both the Genesis and Arcade versions of Ghouls and Ghosts published on the site...)
I didn't even know the Genesis run existed until after adelikat had told me post-submission. This wasn't my intention, but it is up to another judge to decide. Yeah, uh, my bad.

Part 1 Link to video Part 2 Link to video Parts 3 & 4 to come. This run is turning into more of a test run. First off, I need to find a way to get 2 more AP before Evorett. (Shiva needs boost, and Quezocotal could get 18 more AP towards card-mod.) Also, I should really switch to an analog controller. What a pain.
