So I tested the movie tile in 2.4.1 to try again, and this time I got some better behavior at the start.
So far it seems that RNG is being more cooperative, the first screen halt syncs perfectly, but as soon as the explosions stop on the 2nd screen halt, it desyncs. However I think this is due to an invisible lag frame and not from RNG differences.
This should be easier to deal with for both TASers, so I’ll provide the movie file once I’m home and confirm sync on 2.4.2 (I’ll also say which frame the desync appears to happen.)
EDIT: here we go, Desync seems to happen at around frame 2069 in BizHawk 2.4.2:

syncs just fine in BizHawk 2.3.1 for me.
you need to use a release that didn't change the 1 frame loading.

yeah personally if the snake level had some playaround, I'd be satisfied. I'd reccomend watching other TASes with that level in it to get some ideas. My personal favorite is in the 2 player warps tas: https://youtu.be/W_231wO_OCs?t=124

Oh btw HOTD, I forgot to give you the numbers of our improvements compared to your publication. Keep in mind this is with emulation differences factored out (basically I subtracted the number of lag frames from the frame count)
Stage 1 we saved 16 gameplay frames
Stage 2 we saved 227 gameplay frames
none of these improvements include lag frames saved. and I am not bothering to compare those for obvious reasons.

You never know if playaround you do will change RNG. Sometimes it may not, and with this game, it seems pressing the select button will change rng as well.
I think an attempt should at least be made to see if it can be incorporated and still be made to sync afterwards. Branches help out especially with this in TAStudio.
I only say this because I believe TASing should be more than simply optimizations in speedruns. I believe it should be about expressing super human play, and that includes crazy playarounds you see in some older Battletoads TASes.

Just from what I’m watching, I’m a little disappointed that you didn’t do any playaround with the snake area for example. That was what made the old movies so entertaining to watch. If they were in this new movie I would have suggested this for stars honestly. Still I’ll vote yes.

yeah I gotta say, having MelonDS in BizHawk has made casual play of most DS game really nice to do. Been using it mostly to play Ace Attorney games and they work out well. great job everyone.

The recent submission of Pokemon Crystal has revealed an audio issue with music, some of the audio has weird static or echoy noises to it (most noticable with the Oak theme intro). I wrote a ticket about this here:

Maybe the "alternate sync" option wasn't checked in the video capture dialog window.

(I’m noticing alot more static sounds compared to older encodes of this game, specifically the the professor oak intro cutscene, each note that plays in the music has some of this. Also some audio issues almost sounding like there’s reverb or an echo going on. Perhaps it’s an issue with SubGBHawk?)

I'm not sure what to make of this movie honestly. A GB game where the main feature is the Camera, but the Camera isnt used at all in the TAS? What would even happen if you tried to take a picture during emulation?
