It's always nice to come home to see a much anticipated run on the workbench. From watching the WIPs I am convinced enough to vote yes. I also believe this run is of star quality, I know it isn't perfect, but it takes entertainment, intelligent play and determination so wonderfully in hand that it should at least be considered. I want to wait for the AVI so I can see the full run in all its glory. After that I will give some real feedback.

^^^ I agree but commentary would add an extra dimension to any run, fast or slow.

I'll reveal the technique when I finish this WIP. If I can get to the second cycle without any desyncs then I will be convinced that it works. I've used it in West Clock Town and through Scarecrow song in the trading post and there have not been any desyncs. All I've gathered so far is that it definitely reduces the desync rate.

Another good reason for commentary is that it could also be used to explain some of the finer points of the run. For example, JXQ should make one for his Super Metroid 100% using it to entertain (I'm not insinuating that this movie is at all boring, in fact it is my favourite TAS) and also to explain tricks and glitches and why he did what he did in certain places.

I did think that the commentary was an interesting concept. Perhaps more for other long movies...

We might have to wait a little bit longer for the WIP. I've hit a desync outside the trading post. I was wondering when it would come and now I'm trying to fix it. Also, my computer's running low on virtual memory meaning that save states take ages to load. I shall persist nonetheless... EDIT -- Fixed. I also found a great way to avoid desync. I shouldn't be having any more problems with that (touch wood)...

That's sounds great. I'll just post the .m64 up here.

The chances are that although the m64's it doesn't desync for me it probably will for everyone else. The best way for everyone to see my work would be through me encoding an AVI and given my limited skills the file size will usually be well over 100Mb at least. When I finish this WIP (which hopefully I will do this weekend) i'll post up the .m64 instead of youtube encoding.

Personally, I'm stunned that there isn't an active and specific thread purely for arguing time vs. entertainment. It seems to be argued with the same vivacity as many of the more extreme persuasion would debate abortion or capital punishment. Someone should really start one...

I agree. However, it does keep everything very simple. Keep in mind that a 10 minute AVI WIP of MM has a massive file size. With youtube all that needs to be done is click on a link, otherwise it's a lengthy download...

I also thought that this was a very entertaining and very unexpected start to the run.

I decided to keep going. I've finished the stock pot inn and am back in east clock town on the final day. In bigger, much greater news, i've watched the entire movie back so far and have yet to experience one desync :)

Just finished watching and have voted yes. Great run. I haven't been following the thread recently so i didn't really know what to expect. I loved how different it was from Spezzafer's run, i was expecting just that with FODA's improvements but you made this fresh and new. I was at no point bored and Mario moved fluently and optimally throughout. I never saw any real room for improvement (perhaps hit the castle door more cleanly at the start? I don't know, im sure I will be corrected quickly. Does the door animation pull you in?) and everything looked perfect. Great improvement on a run that once upon a time blew my mind. Brilliant.

Yes, i was going to redo anyway. What i've done so far is good, but i feel as if I can squeeze just a little bit more out of it. This run has to be the very best it can be.

I've gone a bit further. I've started the long story with Grandma. I've watched my progress from a read-only save state at first entry to East Clock Town and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong. I really expected a desync in getting from the second floor to Grandma's room but I avoided one which is good. Still waiting... In other news I found a way to skip text quicker, I don't know if it is old news though. In fact I've been using this trick for years but just forgot about it. If you press A when the text first appears on the screen all text for the box suddenly appears. With frame advance this can be done on the earliest possible frame, then skip 2 frames and press A again meaning that the box will be on screen for only a split second. I'm confident that this is the fastest method, but would it be worth starting over to fully incorporate this. Also, someone should check this with OoT.

Great, finished already? Will watch later when I have time to really enjoy it. This seems to be a great day for TASes and also a great week for N64 TASes.

Excellent. Thanks bkDJ. I'll try and get to the stockpot inn tomorrow (try and hit the desyncs) and see how it goes from there. I'll investigate comicalflop's strategy of using read-only save states for the desyncing areas and see how well that works here.

this game is relatively long and we all must accept that fact otherwise there would be a need for segmented runs. Besides you can watch this run in bursts in order for it not be too boring.
This will probably be the case with most N64 TASes. I can't think of many N64 games that, like NES games, can be beaten in 10 - 15 minutes.

I just re-checked my movie and the last Tatl check box disappears on frame 33347, so Mukki's either been very generous to me or both of us.
I didn't quite get what he means here. From the sounds of it he still has 2 frames over me...but then where does the genorosity come into it... I thought I was faster but now i'm confused. Can someone clarify so I can either move on or redo as necessary? I've got time but i can't use it until I know where i'm going. Reply quick please cause i've been unable to do anything today...

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/2847/ZELDA%20MAJORA%27S%20MASK%20%28USA%29.m64 It finishes on the same frame as yours for comparison. Is it worth progressing further now? Or will I wait for AKA to look for more improvements?

When I first did this two days ago I did double sidejump but I redid from there yesterday using a spin instead becuase spins are faster. What annoys me is that there is a small pause between the sidejump and the spin and i can't tell if it's my fault or not. If i remember rightly it takes three sidejumps to reach the text anyway so the diference in time shouldn't be huge. As for the withered deku tree I dropped down to the ground with frame perfection on the very frame that would enable me to spin when I hit the ground without using 'check' on the tree.

I've been resisting the lure of my bed to get this AVI done. I'm uploading to youtube as we speak. EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRwajNHpgTQ Looking back at this there are two things i dislike. 1) my second backwalk 2) the transition from my sidejump to spin in the tunnel after becoming a deku. I doubt that fixing these minor gripes would make even a second though, so i'm happy. Enjoy.

Rising tempest // Those shots make enough noise to get guards to open doors for me. Every shot fired has a purpose, whether or not it connects- guaranteed. Excellent. Just checking :p

This is just my estimate as i haven't seen AKA's movie. The A press that exits the final text box is pressed on frame 33247 and so registers on frame 33249. I tried to skip that text but the best I could do was spin onto the deku flower so that after i skipped the text all i had to do was press A to get inside. Then again my timing may be off because 2.5 seconds sounds a lot over a run that you claimed to be very well optimised. I'll record the AVI and hopefully i was right...
