I found out today that this game was dumped a few days ago. To be precise, the dumped version is Zook Man ZX4, the Taiwanese release. So I decided to test it out for a few hours today. It's the third and final game of the Zook series by bootleg developers Vast Fame, and the only one to be on GBA instead of GBC. Compared to the previous two games, this game is a lot less subtle about its 'inspiration' of classic Mega Man games, as several bosses, enemies, and level graphics are clearly ripped or edited from official Mega Man games (including Mega Man 7, Mega Man & Bass, and Mega Man Zero). It also has a new engine, which doesn't allow the air-sliding/stalling trick that broke the previous two games apart in their TASes. In general I haven't found any game-shattering movement tricks yet, after a few hours of testing. I did find a trick to clip through two-block tall ceilings while wall jumping, which does speed up a few stages with vertical sections. The game has an intro stage, then 8 boss stages, followed by a final stage. The final stage consists just of a linear boss rush with short revisits to the 8 boss stages (with a lot more enemies). There is no true final boss - the game just ends after beating the last boss from the boss rush. Unlike the previous two games, only the 8 bosses need to be defeated to access the final stage. Collecting all upgrades is not needed. Since there are no canonical boss names that I know of, I identify them by the type of stage they reside in (from left to right, top to bottom): Factory, Sky, Volcano, Ocean, Space, Forest, Castle, Broadcast. There are four upgrades in this game:
  • Head Upgrade, in the Space Stage. This allows Zook to exit any stage at any time. Most likely useless.
  • Body Upgrade, in the Forest Stage. Doesn't seem to do anything. Also useless.
  • Leg Upgrade, in the Castle Stage. This allows Zook to dash, although only with double tap (left-left or right-right) input. Dash jumping doesn't work, but it still speeds Zook up by a fair amount on the ground. Probably high priority.
  • Arm Upgrade: I haven't actually been able to find this, although it's claimed to be in the Factory stage. Probably allows charging weapons to do more damage, so probably this will be very useful.
Some other notes:
  • For reference, there's an old playthrough of Rockman & Crystal on YouTube, although it is incomplete (missing the final stage and arm upgrade).
  • I haven't been able to spot any boss weaknesses so far. Maybe I need closer testing, but it seems like there are no boss weaknesses.
  • Since I don't have enough data about boss weaknesses yet, nor where the arm upgrade is or what it exactly does, I don't have a route yet.
  • Every hit in the game does 1 damage to Zook (out of a lifebar of 8), including spikes. The only instant kills are bottomless pits, or getting crushed on the left side of the screen in an autoscroller stage (Sky or Ocean stages)
  • In the final stage, the bosses/stages are met in this order: Factory, Sky, Volcano, Ocean, Space, Forest, Castle, Broadcast.
  • This game does not currently run in BizHawk (1.11.6) or VBA-rr. It only runs in mGBA builds from 2016-06-26 or later. Therefore, it cannot be TASed yet until the mGBA core in BizHawk is updated.

The judge already accepted that run six days before the faster TAS was posted. While it could have still been rejected before it was published, this was in the middle of the Vault unrejection-spree, so I wouldn't blame the judge for not looking back at it almost a week after accepting it, and just half a day before it was published.

This is a strategy game, not an RPG. It doesn't have most of the RPG aspects of the mainline Pokémon games, only the battles.

There's a lot of widespread criticism on the game. Over the years its reputation already had been soiled because of the various delays, and the release hasn't gone over much better judging from reviews and the way the rest of the internet talks about it now. Personally, I got my backer keys yesterday, played the game for a moment yesterday evening, and really enjoyed it so far. The controls and gameplay are tight and fast, it has fairly challenging platforming action, and you get to blow up robots and take their weapons. That's basically what I want from a game like this. I couldn't care less about the trailer, graphics, plot, cutscenes, voice acting, or whatever else people were complaining about. I wasn't bothered about the delays either, as I never was in a rush to play the game (and I got to play a demo of it at Gamescom last year anyway). I don't regret choosing to back it back in 2013.

You can use a RAM address that contains a frame counter for in-game time. Most games that have an ingame time have an appropriate frame counter for that. In your particular case, Spikestuff found the address for you. Check the value of this RAM address at the end of every stage or at the end of the game in both the old run and in your new run, note down the results and compare. Make sure to note the frame count on regular intervals (such as between every stage at a minimum) to make sure you don't lose time in any stage.

Samtastic, for your next run, make sure to compare times for every stage. You don't want to be slower in any stage without a good reason. Spikestuff provided a RAM address for the in-game time frame count. You should use this to compare the times of your stages to those of the published run. Check the value of that RAM address at the end of every stage or the end of the game in both the published run and your new one, note down the results and compare.

So what's the time difference comparing to the PCSX run then? Both movie files reached the same in-game time. I did manage to improve a few stages in the first disc but some of the stages in the second disc were slower.
As the TASer and submitter, you should be the one knowing what the in-game time difference between your run and the previous one is, down to the frame. If there is no proof that this submission is faster than the previous movie, we can't accept it.

It is known that the emulator version in this submission has emulator bugs, and this affects movie sync. Hence, we can't accept this submission in its current state. As others have said, we also don't accept movies from interim builds unless they sync on an official release. So currently, this submission/game is stuck between bad emulation and interim emulation. Until the A2600 emulation changes are made final, or put into a new BizHawk release, we won't know yet if this or any movie of this game will sync on an official release (without inaccurate emulation). So the best course of action here would be to wait until the next BizHawk release, then make the next TAS of this game on that.

Here's another WIP, with Aircon Man's stage finished: Link to video User movie #31620542753029361 This stage uses the WonderSwan's unique feature to be playable both horizontally and vertically (and is the only stage in this game to use the vertical screen mode). This is a pretty fun and diverse stage with some interesting gimmicks. There's a fair bit of strategy put in almost every room. The boss battle (especially the latter half of it) also took a lot of testing with different strategies. In the end, three charge shots in the final phase of the battle turned out to be most efficient. It turns out that charge shots during boss startup do damage the boss - interestingly, it will actually shorten the entire lifebar when it appears (and does so for every 4 points of damage done), which makes it only look like it doesn't affect the boss lifebar.

That is not comparable. I hope you understand the difference between picking at grammar and refusing to debate an excessively rude post that violates forum rules. Once again, I will gladly address your criticism towards the site, but not in topics or to posts where you are being excessively uncivil. That is not being pedantic or using a fallacy, that is just demanding basic courtesy and following the forum rules.

I would be glad to address any constructive criticism you have towards the site (although there are other topics for that), but I will not do so to the same post that in the next paragraph insults another user with various things I'm not going into detail about. A block button is currently not going to happen for a few reasons, some of which logistical, but even if it is, it will never stop other users from reading your posts. Just ignore the other person's messages and don't reply to them or react to them and all would be good just the same.

EUROPE version has less intro,176 frames faster
That is an incredibly poor reason to use the Europe version. Note that using an PAL/Europe version of a console game is against the site rules unless there is a very good reason. Also, you don't seem to take into account framerate differences with this comparison. The NTSC version runs at around 60hz, and the PAL version at around 50hz. At a quick glance, the intro takes about 1450 frames in the PAL version. Assuming the NTSC version is 176 frames longer than that (1624 frames), then the NTSC version intro would be roughly 00:27.07 seconds and the PAL version intro 00:29.00 seconds. So the Europe version actually loses a few seconds. (Not to mention that if the rest of the game doesn't compensate for the framerate difference, then the gameplay will be significantly slower as well).

I do not believe each and every player fully understands how this Tier discussion works. is that to be blamed to those who implemented it? The fundamental problem is he disconnection between how the vault works vs "did you find this movie entertaining?". If my Wonderboy 3 run completes the game entirely differently and is therefore entertaining in a different manner, should my run then be obsoleted by a much faster run which completes the game in an entirely different manner but is still entertaining?
The current system allows a fair bit of leeway for different branches for games - but only outside the Vault tier, so only for runs considered adequately entertaining. It just happens to be that the Wonder Boy 3 movies don't pass the entertainment criteria based on the votes and ratings that those runs got. Hence, they go to the Vault, where the faster run obsoletes the slower one. If your Wonder Boy 3 run got a better entertainment rate than a mediocre ~5.5/10, then it could've been in Moons and we probably wouldn't be having this discussion. This is just how the current Vault/Moons dynamic works. We can allow different branches for games that stand out (ratings-wise), but Wonder Boy 3 happens not to be one that stands out.

Elaborate? Any time I see this line without any specification, I will assume that it is just being used as an excuse for any sloppy gameplay).

Without knowing what the game actually looks like, that sounds like it's going to be really dull to watch. Then again, 30 minutes of selecting text is a lot less than 2 hours of selecting text, so it could still get into the Vault.
The Where in Time Is Carmen Sandiego run is only accepted to the Vault because of its nontrivial routing nature. Text-selecting runs that do nothing but make linear choices are not accepted for the Vault.

Uhm... Why the hell did this run obsolete my run? Two entirely different ways/runs of completing the game.
The previous run was in the Vault, and had poor entertainment ratings so it didn't qualify for a higher tier. As there is now a faster run, the previous run also loses Vault eligibility, and hence it is obsoleted by this run.

I think FractalFusion brings up a fair point, and one that shouldn't be ignored when judging (looking at the judge message). Turning off the music to save loading time. In my personal opinion, this is an incredibly degenerate way of saving frames, with no noticeable difference (taking about half a second at best off a loading screen that lasts several seconds is not noticeable), while having no impact on gameplay and negatively affecting the viewing experience of the movie by cutting out the music. At the very least, it does not constitute an improvement (by TASVideos rules, only differences in gameplay are judged), but for the sake of viewer experience I would consider not accepting runs that do this at all. (Note that there is a Vault rule for "rectifiable presentation decisions" that can render a movie ineligible; I'd argue that cutting out sound or music for no gameplay-based reason could qualify)

Also why isn't this 2 players? I'm sure that would be faster given the fair amount of twin bosses in this game.
I'll just link this and this. To summarize: It doesn't matter that it's not 2 player TAS. 'Cause we allow runs that are 1 player runs for 2 player games.
Only if they pass Moon requirements (assuming 2p is faster). Otherwise they're just suboptimal.

Known issue, seems to happen when a submission gets past the 72 hour mark for judging. No idea yet why it's breaking the way it is here.

The site currently does not support mame-rr or pcsx2-rr movie files, as no parsers have been written for this site for them. In order for us to do that, we need specifications for the movie file, and sample movie files to work with. While they can't currently be uploaded to our site, we do encourage you (or anyone else) to create such movies and post/link them here. That way we will have sample cases to see how stable or effective rerecording is on these platforms, and we can add parsing support, and make them eligible for submission/publication if they work well enough.
