Notice I didn't actually vote for anyone, I was just trying to inject some humour here.

I'm in agreement with all of that, Warp. However, the exaggeration of the risk is the real problem, which while there is genuine concern about something like animal flus, the worst case scenario seems to be the one that is publicly presented.

The biggest factor in these manipulation techniques is playing on the natural fears of the population. We are by nature a fearful species, but that's served us well when we had predators to contend with - the surviving population is descended from the twitchiest of the nervous twitchers which survived our days as prey. So, on an instinctive level, we have a natural and healthy fear factor left over from those primeval days in our evolution. A lot of the media influence comes from either generating fear or exaggerating people's natural concerns. The hysteria over H5N1, or even later the H1N1 scare is a classic example of this fear being used to manipulate people into behaving in a desired manner. In the US televisions, the advertising of pharmaceuticals is pretty shocking compared to what I as a UK citizen is used to. I have seen some of these adverts, and they seem to consist of the following: Fearmongering about a particular illness or disease Promoting the pharmaceutical as a solution; but then is followed by a list of side-effects of the drugs that is worse than the illness it seeks to treat, and tends to take up the majority of the actual advert. I wonder how many of us have actually stopped to listen to one of these adverts in their entirely and thought 'I think I'll take my chances, the side-effects sound much worse.' Its interesting how people react when given two sources of fearmongering; they tend to react to the one that is presented first more than the one that is presented second: in this case, the fear over a particular disease, rather than the side effects of the proposed solution.

You should all thank me for TASing a game that actually made HD encoding a reality for TASvideos. :-p On a serious note, encoding is the real grunt work of the publication side of TASvideos, so I'd like to see some recognition - not just because I encode runs myself, but because it shows the appreciation of the work and effort and time involved.

Public awareness of the subtle manipulation techniques used in the media is increasing. As we are becoming more technologically savvy, people are turning more to alternate media outlets, and realising that the mainstream media is not the most reliable source for the news. This is shown with the recent and growing drop in newspaper sales of the established media outlets. The internet is still a huge growing force in informing people about information, and it is possible to easily find many peer-reviewed scientific papers online and read them for yourself, rather than having a journalist interpret that for you, with the natural bias, omission and spin that seems to come from the mainstream media. As for the expansion of the idea of critical thinking, it is something I like to challenge myself with. I was taught ways to think from the opposite point of view of what I genuinely support or believe myself, and I use that a lot today to challenge and either reinforce or re-evaluate my own beliefs and opinions on matters. I like a healthy debate, and this ability is great in making real debate happen. I sometimes do take on the role of 'devil's advocate', not necessarily because I support something, but to get a debate and better understanding of the opposite point of view.

GameCube titles spring to mind. My 7:17 100% Colosseum run is beatable, sub 7 hour at least. I should get around to the any% too. SDA is still in need of an XD run too, but I know a bit less about that one. Should research it now tbh.

Stage 2: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/260080903/Alisia%20Dragoon%20minimalist%20-%20Stage%202%20WIP.gmv Encode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jys7F91CqGQ The lack of Thunder Levels Up are already becoming noticeable. I take damage on the miniboss in order to get more frames of the Thunder charge to hit as I turn around. Since regardless of when I kill it on the first phase, I have to wait another 2 rounds for it to die completely, it doesn't actually waste time when I kill it on the first phase, as long as I manage it by then. Since bringing out the summon causes lag, as well as whenever it takes damage, I wait until where the summon Level Up item is before I bring out Boomerang Lizard. This is the most optimal summon for this boss (Dragon Frye would be if it could do damage on the boss, but it has the armoured property, which BL doesn't care about). BL has the fastest attack so he gets more damage in overall than other summons. Also, since I'm avoiding lag here the Ball of Fire wouldn't be the best option. Anyway the boss needs two Thunder charges to finish off, so Alisia needs to avoid damage, and I avoid damage on the summon so it doesn't generate lag.

Stage 1: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/253898946/Alisia%20Dragoon%20minimalist%20-%20Stage%201%20WIP.gmv Encode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ne0V4p8gAZc Ok, I think I'm finally done with Stage 1 here. I switched to the (JU) rom since it appears that there is less lag than the (JUE) rom. This allowed me to get through 1-1 without any lag being generated, rather than the 1 frame I had to accept last time. I also managed to include the damage boost in 1-2 as in the any% version. I had to delay moving forward a bit so I could kill the first enemy, allowing me to damage boost of the second on that second staircase set. The levels go by pretty quickly through 1-2 and 1-3 since I'm not going out the way to get Thunder Level Ups. On to the boss, and interestingly, since on Normal the bosses have less health, they take almost exactly the same time to kill (100 frames vs 99 in the published run) as in the Hard mode version with L3 Thunder. Later bosses are naturally going to run slower, but I'll have some fun with the summons, and the faster levels will sort of balance that out. I'll throw an encode out shortly.

Ch13 v3: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1977039107/FE6%20TAS%20Ch13v3%20WIP.vbm Well, not only did I redo Ch12 AGAIN, I've redone Ch13 too. Managed to make some further savings across both chapters, but made a bit of a loss in one place. Ch12 is almost exactly the same, except Roy keeps the Door Key and doesn't trade it across to Alan, so I save time by not having to take it back. Slight improvement by not getting hit on turn 20 enemy phase too. 67 frames saved here, on top of the 171 from the previous version. Ch13 was a new kettle of fish. I reverted to getting the first version's turn 1 enemy phase, with 2 critical hits and a HP, Str, Skl, Spd level up. I actually set up the RNG in the previous turn so that I needed no manipulation to do this. Alan takes a hit on his first enemy though, but its not a problem Turn 2: Less trading here, since Zealot wants to empty his inventory. Roy takes the Steel Lance and Steel Sword from him. Alan had taken the Javelin and Killing Edge as before in the previous turn. Marcus again crits the Troubadour, and finish in the same positions as last time. Turn 3: More new changes - Zealot drops Roy, so Miledy can pick up Zealot and save me having to move him next turn to avoid the enemies on Turn 6. Marcus picks up Roy and moves as normal. Alan positions himself forward, holding a 10 use Hand Axe and full Javelin in second position. You might not think it, but this is the exact RNG manipulation used in the previous version - something caused Alan to miss on the second-to-last enemy, which is the biggest loss in this entire version. Still, I finish overall much faster. I save time by skipping the Sophia visiting Cecilia cutscene early. Turn 4: Again, more cutscene savings by skipping the move back across after a unit moves. Marcus finishes off the awkward cavalier, and I finally realise I don't need a crit to kill the Troubadour, which makes manipulating the double miss on Lalum easier. Turn 5: Pervical recruited, Marcus deals with his inventory issues (dumps the Hammer, Hand Axe and 12 use Javelin on Roy, destroys the 1 use Javelin). Alan crits the wyverns as before. Turn 6: Now that I have Roy C support, I can reach an earlier critical than before on the boss (RN for crit is 33, Alan has 31 crt with Killing Edge, 36 with Roy support). Turn 7: Marcus goes shopping. Roy seize. Total saving 77 frames in Ch13, 144 between Ch12 and 13 in this version. I think I can stop optimising here. Time to move on Ch14, finally.

No-one works out strategies in isolation, unless they are a strategic genius or something. Besides, its one thing to see how something works, its a very different thing to copy it yourself. I can appreciate the problem here. However, I don't think the whole idea of having strategy videos is necessarily a bad thing. People who want to figure it out for themselves can do so - its called self-censorship. I know the idea of discipling yourself seems a bit odd, but it is certainly possible. Besides, videos are not the only way people can get help here, and I don't think having them out there will necessarily bias the highscore table too much.

I don't hear this from other strategy games. Fire Emblem players make videos all the time of their low-turn playthroughs, something which the serious FE players are competitive about, and no-one there complains about how the mystery of the strategy is ruined. There are debates in other areas, naturally, but this is not one that comes up. Simple solution - if you want to figure it out for yourself, don't watch the TAS.

My one concern about the submission is the code entered at the beginning (the one that takes away most of the DK barrels and gives you both kongs at the start of the level) isn't really mentioned in the submission text. Granted, it's a minor detail, but still, how much longer would the movie have been without entering the code?
The game would actually be a bit shorter, since there are more opportunities to use the two Kongs to save time by taking hits. Unfortunately, by not using the TUFST code it doesn't get the highest % rating. Personally, I don't think a codeless 100% run needs to be done since it would be virtually the same, with a lot more death abuse, and ruin the entertainment value.

It might just be you are using the default sound setting. SNES games use 32 kHz, which is the default setting on the emulator, but that is a problem with getting audio/video to sync. Try setting the sound to 48 kHz and recording again, it should sync. If I can get DKC3 encode to sync @ 48 kHz, I'm sure you can too.

The GBA versions are surprisingly faithful ports of the original games. However, I still think it would be best that these games were done on the DOS versions, there are more timesavers there, I would imagine.

Can I use this WIP to get an early encode started, or are there any slight changes in the final submission version?

Ch12: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/498974879/FE6%20TAS%20Ch1-12%20improvement.vbm Encode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aG1TxBQ2Ibo Managed to improve this by 171 frames, and set up a bigger saving in the next chapter too. Turn 1: Roy sorts out Alan's equipment, and gets rid of a 1 use Javelin, a 4 use Javelin, and the Iron Lance which I don't think will be useful any more now that I'm getting Killer Lances in the next chapter. Alan sets up an enemy phase crit as in the previous version. Turn 2: I have to rush here since the enemies coming from the west will close down Alan's kill of Aine. There's a cutscene that generates if I delay a turn killing the boss, so I can't slow play until Aine is dead. Turn 3: Same enemy phase as before. Draws one unit into the chokepoint to force the other hand axers into attacking close range. C Swords gained on enemy phase. Turn 4: Again, finishing off the last hand axe fighter. Turn 5: Manipulates a different level up this time (HP, Str, Skl, Spd, Def), and crits not only the fighter but also the armour. Turn 6: Alan rescues Roy so he doesn't suffer any attacks. Turn 7: Alan drops Roy, since he can't do both this and use the key. Turn 8: Roy opens the door, Alan gets rid of the Sleep Staff priest. Turn 9: Roy blocks the right spawn point. Alan's new position allows a much faster manipulation of the 2% crit on Aine. Turns 10-16: Alan drops back to get support turns with Roy. Turn 17: Alan C Roy Support, finally! Alan drops over the other spawn point. Turn 20: Roy moves to seize. I found out that if I delay skipping the first cutscene slightly, I can skip both of them and save more time. Turn 21: Seize. Also, on Vykan's suggestion, I tested whether turning the Autocursor off and moving towards the centre saves time. Having Autocursor on starts the turn immediately on Roy, which can be a timesaver in a lot of situations. Although it looks longer, it turns out there is no difference in frames between having autocursor on or off, since the movement that happens occurs during the phase animation, so no time is actually wasted.

Probably just a reminder like 'Hi, we're Capcom, we made this game, and that Street Fighter game, buy them both!' Capcom loves throwing cameos in their games, whether in the same series or not (Megaman X getting Hadouken and Shoryuken for example). Voted yes, the battles are really well done.

Good to know they are finally removing the length limit, even if it isn't for everyone its a step in the right direction. Found out that my account (Toothache42) also had the limit removed, so I'll be using that for encode streaming as well as my DM account.

No, you're right. I apologise for the attitude, I've just had things on my mind lately, but there was no need to lash out. I'm sorry.
