I noticed in the recent Fire Red TAS, he battles the Lass on Route 3 then walks back to reset her position, avoiding fighting the bug catcher with 4 pokemon (she only has 2). Would that actually save time in this version?

Congrats, another monster pain of a Pokemon game down. It's about time I pulled my finger out and got Colosseum under way.

Might it be worth it to pick up the Heatproof case? It's right there when you're buying the MSX2, so it's not out of the way, the only question is if you need the 80 gold later on - no idea what the path looks like. I agree on the cross.
The cash route is pretty much planned out in advance, to cut down the minimum amount of time on going to pots and breaking them. There are required items to buy later on (Lamp of Time, Dragon Bone, one ankh for example) which aren't cheap so there's no room to include optional items like the Heatproof Case On the subject of getting the Cross, would it be worth not getting it and getting some damage boosts from the blue/red enemies instead?

http://www.exodusemulator.com/ From what I can glean from the site, looks like a Genesis/Mega Drive emulator with the same design philosophy as bsnes was for Super Nintendo - accuracy over everything. I'd say this will be worth investigating to use for TASing purposes in the future. And it's about time too :-)

I have to wonder if this is a problem with the categories as listed. Since this is a game with some non-standard goals as well as aiming for fastest in-game times (on the stages where it is relevant), it's like suddenly it doesn't fit into whatever 'neat' category the moon or whatever was supposed to represent. So the question is - what do you do with a game that isn't so clear cut like this one?

How does it not aim for fastest time? I clearly go through each of the timed stages as fast as possible, just because it is not explicitly stated is irrelevant. Besides, what kind of miserable jobsworth are you to try and be such a stickler to the rules?

I watched the first two parts of the nico TAS, and it does everything worse than antd did in his initial boss fights. There was a lot of waiting for crits rather than taking regular hits in the interim, a lot less crits, Guard Scorpion gets to raise his tail, and generally the approach was a lot slower and sub-optimal. Nice to see a finished TAS linked, although there's a lot of room for improvement.

IIRC there are some branches of VBA-M that work well with Dolphin. Not sure if there are rerecording versions yet though. This and Final Fantasy:Crystal Chronicles would be definitely worth seeing

Yoshimitsu looks down on you in dissapoint. No vote for lack of variety and bad character choice.

Personally I'd like to see a TAS demonstrate multiple styles for more variety. Royal Guard looks impressive to those unfamiliar with the game for example, although this idea probably falls under the realm of speed/entertainment tradeoffs.

Some of the stories are extremely short. The ninja ones only occupy 8 regions, and the female ones 7, for example, and the two between Shingen and Kenshin only require the first to 5 wins. The really long ones will come from being the first to collect 100 pokemon, or conquering the entire region from a single location. However, it is very easy to organise a large army and sweep over Ransei in a few months from one place, in TAS terms. The real interesting story will be the final story which is essentially 'hard mode', but even that will be relatively simple.

Yes I do have plans for this, but I plan to do it on Hard Mode. Might actually be fun to do given that I'll need to rely on more units, might even recruit the nomads and go for Sacae route for something different to the NM run. For now, I'm taking a bit of a TASing break

http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/3594262877080532 Encode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yz4WGE60G5Q It's all done!! I'll be ready to submit as soon as: a) run notes are complete, and these are extensive! b) audio commentary is recorded This is for those who can't wait. VBA version is v23.4-interim svn 324, seems to have desyncs in other versions

The current SDA route is out of date. It would be worth watching UltraJMan's streams to see how the latest route pans out. For starters, the new route has 120 gold before warping to the village for the first time so both the Glyph Reader and Handy Scanner can be bought at once. I'm sure enemy drops are going to be somewhat easier to manage than is displayed here. In real time I've observed it is possible to manipulate one of the birds just before the weight platform above the entrance to always give a drop if hit at the right time. There's the possibility of manipulating the enemy start positions and behaviour too. For example, it would be possible to manipulate a bat to knock you down the long ladder in the room with the first Life Jewel, it looks like a significant saving. It should also be possible to kill both of the bats that reveal the Temple of the Sun Jewel as well without having to stop partway down. Overall, this is done well, but the route needs a lot more thought. I'm impressed with how fast Lemeza can attack, and a nice creative use of the knives in the Bahamut fight. I'm sure it would be possible to manipulate a few more shurikens to save some time there, or perhaps use a few less on the way. This will take a lot more planning, for sure

After much frustration, and having to redo everything from Ch16-19 4 times in order to get the right stats on Thany, I finally completed chapter 19. All that's left to do is complete chapter 20, rehex ch21 and ch22 (I reset the RNG for a much earlier Zephiel ORKO, so I can directly hex this part in), and alter things ever so slightly so that Fa isn't killed (actually an easy feat in hindsight, just need to persuade the General to move one step south so he can only attack her at range on turn 3 EP). This should be the final update before submission. Expect it any day now :-)

Turns out I need to avoid Thany gaining any more Defence, as it really messes up getting her to low HP for Ch19, so I've had to redo ch16 again to avoid that. Won't take me long to catch up again, but it'll be a bit of a while before I can find my way through again (as not only do I need to lower Thany's Def, I also need to play with some enemy stat manipulation to give the pegs she faces high enough Str to push her low enough.). I'm still good for finishing before Christmas I think, but I've got a lot more work ahead of myself.

http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/3126900157178143 I have redone Ch16 and 17 to allow some changes. Firstly, Thany gets to reach D Swords in time, as I've not lost any Wexp now. Second, I have synced up the RNG to the previous version, allowing me to finish the Ch17 boss with Slim Sword. Even managed to save another 104 frames with this revision, total saving now of 2575 frames over v5. Next few chapters should fly by, with only Ch22 needing a bit more thought. I think I'll not post any more WIPs from this point, so watch out for the submission coming soon!!

http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/3104903528487029 There's only slight improvements from here on, but I did manage to find a new improvement over the previous chapters: you can skip the cutscenes at the end of chapters, going straight to the save screen after seizing. Hexed this in the chapters I'd missed so far, and then caught my way up to the end of Chapter 17. Total improvements of 2471 frames. Pretty happy with the end result, the remaining chapters are going to go by very smoothly now given they are all flier skips (except for Ch22). EDIT: Turns out I end up 1 wexp short of being able to use D swords by the time I need it with this approach. Back to the drawing board methinks. I use a lot more RNs than before in ch16, this misses the Slim Sword boss kill on the ch17 boss, so I may need to rethink my approach there.

Woot, great stuff everyone. I'm glad myself and many others insisted on a new 120 star after the initial reluctance. Yes votin ftw!

I just hope the next time you find 30 seconds of improvement in chapter one you don't decide to restart all the way over again despite just having to crit Idoun to finish.
Actually I did finish v5, but that actually helped me in planning any improvements in future runs given what trades I may need and there was a lot of optimisations I found in hindsight that I felt needed to be added. Basically, I wasn't willing to settle for second best. Sure the run has taken a long time to do (over 2 years now), but I'd rather submit the most optimal run I can find rather than something I know could be better.
