Thanks for posting a well-explained argument, spweasel, against this movie. Too often than not, it's difficult to post thoughts against a technically-competent movie without getting flamed for them. You also hit on pretty much every important factor about this run: the annoying rupee sound, the floor glitch that has been previously used, and the extra gameplay. I'm of a different opinion, however, concerning how entertaining these factors are. While the repetitive rupee-draining sound is annoying, it also serves as an amusing testament to how broken this run is. It probably took me at least 15 seconds on the first watch to get over the "holy crap, what did he DO to the poor rupee counter?" feeling of astonishment. In the end, the movie is also short enough that for the most part, I'm still astonished rather than annoyed. Next, there's the argument that there's not much extra gameplay. I guess not, but most of the extra parts are fairly surprising. Even though I knew about the under-the-floor glitch, I found it quite funny to see Link leave and reenter Ganon's Tower and then proceed to jump into the wall. The final boss fight looks like a hack, but I mean that in the best way possible (total owning of the game). It's interesting to know that, as GreenaLink mentioned, that strategy isn't supposed to work with an uncursed Link. Based on this, I vote Yes. I guess I just found the main glitches amusing where others may find them mind-numbing, and that's just a matter of personal taste.

Onyx3173: Based on the text from klmz's last submission of this game, this is what I gather about the name thing. There are two cursors: the cursor that lets you select a letter to enter, and the cursor on the name itself that says where the next letter goes. The name cursor can be moved with the L and R buttons. Thus, by using L and R, time can be saved because the two occurrences of "M" can be entered without having to scroll the letter cursor. (This also explains why extra letters are entered, so that the name is long enough for the name cursor to have room to scroll.) Major props to zggzdydp for figuring out how to save time with this.

Now that I've watched this, I can conclusively say it is awesome. It should also obsolete the Hyper Sonic 100% run since it has less boring stuff (bonus stages) and more HolyCrapWhereIsSonicOMGFlashyGoodness. Along the lines of what arkiandruski pointed out, the Hyper Knuckles run does a good job demonstrating the bonus stages, as well as Knuckles's path through the game.

Nice job with the improvement! The Harpuia fight definitely looks pretty good. It's a shame though that SDC isn't that fun to watch in this game compared to the combos in other MMZ games (one notable exception, though, is it's still hilarious watching Copy-X bounce at the left wall). In particular, I've never really liked the elephant battle since you do fairly little damage per strike, even if that is the best way to fight him. In any case, well-deserved Yes vote.

I'd also love to see a first quest improvement, since that run doesn't currently use the overworld glitch (which I imagine would certainly change the route). As for this run, I can't say no to more optimization of an already impressive-looking run. Good job Baxter, and good job again to jprofit22 for setting a high standard to overcome and making most of the route.

I've watched the run now. There are a few ugly-looking missed shots sometimes, but overall the run is pretty impressive with item usage and delay scrolling. The music is fun too. I vote Yes, to be published alongside Rockman No Constancy. Sir VG: I think that music is from cutscenes in MMX2 or MMX3 (probably 3, in scenes with Dr. Cain). EDIT: Derakon got the music right. Though I do think the MMX3 cutscene tune is somewhere else...

I had some trouble downloading the IPS patch from the link provided. It seems that the zipped folder is password-protected? Anyway, I'm looking forward to this. When Rockman 2 hacks were being discussed in the last submission, people linked to cstrakm's run of Deus Ex Machina. Since the items powerups change so radically, this hack really does feel quite like a different game. Also, the quality of hack is quite good. Out of curiosity, woabclf, how does this TAS compare to cstrakm's run?

I haven't yet watched this movie (and probably won't get to it for a couple days), but I would like to point out that I second Derakon's idea, namely that this could obsolete the current Hyper Sonic run. Nobody wanted to see the emerald collecting anyway, and even though this run does use horizontal underflow, the avoidance of horizontal underflow doesn't seem like a big enough reason to me to keep around the current Hyper Sonic run. Anyway, will watch later.

Nice job DarkKobold! The snake boss with the multiple segments looks especially good now, and skipping frozen Camilla's dialogue was pretty hilarious. I also liked seeing that other random attack you used on Deatharte and Chaos, whatever it was. Yes vote. However, you did remove the solemn prayer during the snake and angel fights, so that's a little less entertaining. The movie still kicks butt though.

Now that I finally have a decent internet connection again, I can say that I really liked this run. It had some repetitive moments, since the special attacks get used all the time, but there was clear emphasis on variety and entertainment when possible. (I'm especially fond of Raph and Michaelangelo playing leapfrog or so during the second boss fight.) Good job! Also, just to check, should this obsolete the current TMNT2 run? I don't think it should, given the very different natures of the runs (and the NES game has more stages), but it's worth mentioning.

Wow, nice job on improving a TAS that's already in the frame-war stages!

Slowking, look at the judging verdict given to the last published run on the J ROM. That ruling explicitly stipulates that the use of J is an exception and that a run on the U ROM can obsolete it. Thus, at least in this case, the language debate is fairly settled, and the site certainly didn't screw itself over. I don't have a comment in general on the U vs. J debate.

Just curious, did fog work for you in Direct64? A reason why I didn't use it for the YT encode was because fog didn't work.
I didn't recall there really being fog in the run, unless it's present in the flashback sequence with Zelda running away on the horse and Ganondorf attacking Link as a kid. In that case, the second cutscene on that type (the one from Zelda's perspective, when she talks with you about entrusting the Ocarina to you) failed to load properly. The first cutscene of that type did load fine, as did everything else.

I finally got a chance to sit down and watch this. Somehow, glN64 always runs too slowly on my machine, but Direct64 ALPHA worked. ... and I'm amazed. We've come a long way from the basic TAS tricks for this game. The new superslide techniques make this look completely different from previous runs. Thank you, Bloobiebla and company, for making the run still seem fresh to people familiar with the old glitched runs. I also recommend using screenshot 2 of Link being the "action hero" recoiling from a bomb explosion.

In terms of other projects, whatever happened to Rockin' Kats? I know multiple authors have all made improvements that they never thought were "good enough", but maybe we should have one of those submitted for now. Also, that game deserves a kick-ass run. Another run that needs a serious update is Legend of Toki: Going Ape-Spit. Diman had a good improvement run that he cancelled years ago. On the subject of this game, very nice! Stage 5 definitely looks better, though I can't put my finger on exactly why. Yes vote.

By the way, GlitchMan, in this year, you've also managed to stop time doing all these things (Mega Man 4, Flash Stopper)! Anyway, let's stay on topic. I like how fast the character moves. It's cool how you can shoot the stones ahead of you to pick up fuel from the enemy later. It was amusing to see the DeLorean canceled just to respawn enemies for more fuel. Death abuse was cool, especially in object rooms. Actually, object rooms were pretty cool overall... they sort of reminded me of a more sinister Nuts 'n Milk. However, the game is just LONG. The streets all look pretty much exactly alike after the first few minutes. (Though I suppose that people who haven't played Metroid have a similar complaint, especially about the 100% runs.) I had to watch a lot of this at 200% speed. All in all, the game is too long for a Yes vote from me, and I'm going with Meh.

Wow, I had no idea this game existed, but I was quite amused by how quickly it was broken. It's funny when the best part of a TAS is actually the underwater section. This seems good enough for a Yes vote. Also, the credits loop. That's annoying.

Hey, nice job so far, Bhezt Rhy! I used to play this game a lot as a kid, and you're definitely making it look easy. For instance, you're going through most of the bouncy ball enemies while they're the "safe" color. Is that luck manipulation? Also, how is the (J) ROM faster? It seemed pretty similar to the (U) game for me (though I think the world 2 music was different, and of course the opening text is different after hitting Start). Keep it up! EDIT: Fixed the name of Bhezt Rhy. Sorry for the earlier mistake.

Somehow I didn't get notified that this thread updated. Anyway, I just checked out the new starting WIP. Very smooth! It's awesome that you figured out the randomness, because the end result looks great dodging all the shots on the way back from the magnet box. Keep it up! Also, you mentioned gaining 3 frames for free at a menu. Do you think menus have a frame rule for when they open and close?

Flygon mentioned what I was going to say: Shining In The Darkness is a good comparison. That run is longer and goes through more repetitive passageways, but people reacted really positively to that run. Is it because people are more familiar with that game? I found this fairly interesting once I fast-forwarded some of the walking, because you get into fights so often with large crowds and get out just fine. It's also cool to know that the lightning wand needs luck manipulation to avoid vanishing (just like the character from Shining in the Darkness who goes "Wachunga!"). Toss in a cheesy action sequence with the Burrower, and the freaky face of your character using the lightning wand, and I'd say this qualifies. Good job!

This ended up being more fun than I thought it would be. Little things ended up amusing me, like how no coin is collected, but Mario still jumps for almost every feasible powerup block that doesn't have coins. It's as if Mario is a psychic about knowing which blocks are safe or not... I don't get this same feeling from the current warp-full TAS. I'd be in favor of publishing this as a separate category. Although there are some technical issues, the quality seems high enough for publication. Also, people can then go work on obsoleting the movie.

It's great to see this game trounced again. The lag reduction is particularly evident in Stage 4. Nice job!
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! This is amazing. The fact that you pull off triples for 4 lines is epic. It's fun to see the blocks gradually shift downward as you do this. I also would recommend Noob Irdoh's screenshot. Way to surprise us all in a game that we didn't think had any surprises.

Very nice! The flying looks a lot better, and it's nice to see the windy part get skipped. Now it would be nice if there was a way in World 5 to avoid having to wait for those conveyor belt blocks. Two small optimization concerns in World 5: 1. You hit the mouse powerup on it's right side, which looks like it loses a little time compared to hitting it on the left (if that's possible). 2. When transforming back out of final form for the last fight, can you jump first so that you fall down the hole while transforming? You currently wait on top of the hole until you're normal again.

I like the idea of a pacifist run for this game. However, I have doubts about the technical ability of the run. It doesn't seem like any of the starting menus or screen transitions are optimized. The boss fights look fairly sloppy, especially the third fight. (I also hope there's a faster way to beat the last boss without jumping between the floors after each shot or so.) In general, there's also quite a bit of double-backing to avoid enemies. The entertainment is fairly good, though. It is pretty cool to see a big stream of bullets, all of which miss. Stage 3 was especially funny since the enemies die from a lot of friendly fire, like fire arrows and boulders (and oddly enough, friendly gunfire doesn't seem to do anything in this game...) There could have been more entertainment on the elevator in 3-2, but that's a minor detail. I would vote Yes to a run of this that has better boss fights (maybe it's possible to still pick up gun upgrades to help?). However, this seems like it could be better. This is a low Meh.
