As for Dooms for utterly different platforms, like SegaCD or SNES, those are ran on their original hardware pieces, and emulators of those inherently allow emulating the ports, as they were actually ported. Doom working on different OSes is not a result of porting, it's a result of using the original Doom map under the engine that was build to support different OSes. And as was noted, nothing needs to be emulated, unlike with SNES or SegaCD, the game just runs and handles input sequences. The principle of Doom demos is identical to that of Hourglass. It does not emulate. To Radiant: would you consider ports of the same game for Windows and DOS worth be published alongside? Also, please list the disadvantages of merging them, besides "feeling less natural". Note: I can understand DOS and Windows being linked together as Gameboys are, with still holding OS names. But we need more advantages/disadvantages of both ways, if we now narrow it down to just these 2 options.

Indeed. As the article you link to describes, it is a standard platform with 16 to 256 kilobytes of RAM, a single 4.77 MHz processor, and up to 20 Mb of hard drive space. I wish you best of luck getting Windows 7 to run on that :)

http://plasmon.rghost.ru/8tRKs948B/image.png So Glide does not allow capturing over reset seamlessly to you?

There's no such thing in nature.

Are you absolutely sure SNES is limited to the same architecture as NES?

By contrast, you can in fact run Gamecube games natively on a Wii (and the two consoles share the same memory cards, controllers, and even the same emulator), so combining those in one category would actually make more sense than combining DOS and Windows.
I don't understand how you keep mixing up the terms "hardware" (console/computer architecture) and "software" (operating system).
Scepheo wrote:
How is Doom not inherently DOS? It was developed for DOS, and the original version runs only on DOS. Sure, there were ports to other systems, but when did we start considering those to be the same thing? And no, DOS had nothing to do with the making of this or any Doom TASes, but that's only true because the development of a Doom TAS is done on a port. I could make a Super Mario Bros. TAS using only a hex editor on my TI-86, but it's still an NES TAS.
First of all, DOS is only an operating system. DOOM was developed to run on any IBM PC compatible machine, and it's how we are running it actually. Sure, you can completely limit yourself to running it on DOS only, but how would you dump AVI from it then? And what quality it will be? Some may say "it will be autentic original quality", but why use poor 3D if we right now can afford superb 3D? Just run glBoom, and it starts looking as good as possible, while still syncing for the same movie. Should we drop advantages? I don't think so. It all means, DOOM is not DOS-exclusive. It's just a map.
Scepheo wrote:
However, I feel it should be done with the note that a proper, DOS-emulator-made TAS should replace it in the future.
The benefit from it being... what?
Now my actual thoughts on the matter. Why does PC as a platform even make sense? Because there is such a platform! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Personal_Computer It is not (just another) personal computer, it's Personal Computer from IBM. It has standardized architecture, as Warp said, and the idea is to have everything totally compatible between all the different implementations. So when we put console names as a platform, we are dropping the company that made it (unless it's NES or SNES), and just go with the name of the very platform. If someone is unhappy with the term's ambiguity, we simply can use IBM PC instead of just PC. That would make the most sense possible and leave zero disambiguation. And none of the games that do not run on IBM PC compatible hardware would make it to that platform. And all that do, will be there. Again, DOS/Windows/recent OSX/even Linux are only operating systems, not hardware configurations. And they are all ran on IBM PC. If they are not, it's a different platform. TL:DR: Combine by hardware configuration.

The current SM74 submission. Note 1: That freeze was occurring on win7 x64 only. On XP it captures well with Glide. Note 2: I was using Jabo, and it couldn't resume capturing after reset. With a fast computer, could you test it? Just make sure to use kkapture.

- uploading and deleting works as expected - upload speed for me is ~950KB/s - spaces in video titles aren't supported, but I see no need in them when aiming for TVC (EDIT: I think quotes are required for titles with spaces, but haven't tested) Pending further tests...

Thanks, however now as I tested it, it has graphical glitches with Glide and it freezes some seconds in when using kkapture+Glide (no matter what resolution/Glide settings/kkapture settings). With Jabo it all goes perfect, but maximum res is 1200p.

So what about completely losing Gens-rr source code? Will the project migrate anywhere? http://code.google.com/p/gens-rerecording/issues/detail?id=116

I actually meant Jabo. From your posts about SM74, it seems to be the only plugin to use for dumping, since you need to restart mupen, which will probably make it desync again with Glide. Also, use this trick for such huge images:

Am I the only one who thinks that once SGDQ feels problematic to afford for dwangoAC, there's no hard need to travel? I, for one, don't have a right to require AC to spend his efforts (and money) on a less meaningful event, if those efforts (and money) will anyway be spend on a more meaningful one later too. SGDQ feels more like a way to spend "spare" resources on, and I'm not sure there are on dwango's side (not to disparage your abilities, Alan, I'm just caring about SGDQ not becoming a trouble).

It's a habit over here to use the best anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering options possible. And yes, emulators that allow dumping at high resolutions should be dumped at them for HD encodes whenever possible, like that 1536p, then it needs no upscaling and looks the best. For SD encodes though, you'd need to test what looks the best: dumping at native res with multisampling, or at hires with downscaling. http://tasvideos.org/EncoderGuidelines.html#Antialiasing As for Mupen, I think Glide doesn't allow multisampling, while, for example, Rise does. Is it correct?

Nah. I can understand random people wanting it to be published and voting Yes on that ground, but was it entertaining? Was it even an actual playaround? Not anything that's not speed-oriented is necessarily a playaround. You know, playaround is in fact one of the hardest branches ever to do right. Because it involves deep knowledge and great execution, but also it needs a game that is complex enough. Bonus points for using 2 players. Here... we have some obscure (due to being Japanese-only and anime-based, even though this anime was popular) game, with 1 character beating enemies with a narrow moveset for half an hour. Probably I am missing something, but I see zero room for a playaround that this game could offer. Even with 2 characters (dunno if it's possible) it won't attract me at all. I watched 5 minutes of it, FF'd for quite a bit, looked at it, and saw nothing worth keeping watching. It's a great game for Vault, but speed/entertainment trade-offs (let alone playarounds) simply don't belong here. Voted No.

So can someone edit the movie to include the entire ending song loop? PM'd the author, no response yet.

Hi everyone, I am thinking of encoding my TASes in 1440p. Is there a way to fool my mupen (which I have just got to work in my VM) to display at 1440P without breaking it. my computers screen is displayed as 1280 x 800. In other words. I want to make mupen record at 1440p while inside of the VM. Hope this helps, sorry for bad description in advance ;)

I think it's impossible to record offscreen stuff, maybe a VideoForWindows thing. For me the end picture is what I set, but the image gets cut beyond my screen resolution.
Ah, but you forget, this is inside a VM. Set the VM Desktop resolution to be bigger than your capture resolution and you can capture in 1440p. The VM software would either rescale or add scroll bars. What VM software are you using? Ediy: Sorry feos, I knew of this solution a long time ago, but I didn't think you would want to go through the trouble of setting a VM just to capture, lol.
I tested today going crazy with resolutions higher than my screen and .kkapture, and it works perfectly on win7 x64 with no VMs. Mupen64, pcsx, doom... I bet it will work with BizHawk's N64 video too.

I think we must judge that by how wide is Doom speedrunning, and how many movies are going to be in that section if we choose a separate platform. Otherwise we should prefer consistency and just go with DOS.

As it's accepted, I'm already looking into publishing it. But I have a question: does the ending music loop? Is the entire 1 loop included in the movie? If not, how can I extend it to do so? Or maybe I'd ask the author to do it (if only there's more music after this movie's end).

Music needs to carry some sort of "new meaning" to be considered fair use. And while for standalone music it's not hard to tell if it gets new meaning by becoming a part of a new installation, game music was supposed to play while you're playing, and TASes add literally nothing to this. But my "personal sense" tells me that only posting game OSTs (standalone) really violates copyright. And it may very well be completely false. http://www.cmsimpact.org/fair-use/related-materials/codes/code-best-practices-fair-use-online-video#six
