NES

For NES / Famicom, there are four choices:
  • FCE Ultra
  • Famtasia (obsolete)
  • VirtuaNES (obsolete)
  • Nintendulator (not supported)
We recommend FCEU because of its technical superiority to Famtasia and VirtuaNES. Famtasia and VirtuaNES are allowed, but considered deprecated. Nintendulator is not supported at this site.

FCE Ultra

FCE Ultra is a cross-platform NES emulator released under the General Public License. blip and nitsuja have modified FCEU to support rerecording.

FCEU 0.98.28

Older versions, sometimes needed for playing back older movies:

Download FCEU 0.98.15 (Windows) (source code[1])

Download FCEU 0.98.13 [1]

Download FCEU 0.98.12 [1]

The official homepage of FCE Ultra is http://fceultra.sourceforge.net/. It has rerecording support, but we recommend the modified emulators above.

If you are interested in compiling your FCEU from source code, see

Famtasia

Note: For making NES movies, we recommend using FCE Ultra instead of Famtasia.

Famtasia is a NES emulator for Windows only. It is no longer under development, but blip has made some patches that improve Famtasia in various ways.

Famtasia is deprecated because of various reasons:

  1. Shortcomings in emulation quality.
  2. It only supports NTSC, not PAL (European games).
  3. It is only available as .exe; no source code, which means that its shortcomings cannot be fixed without excess effort.
  4. Because of #3, it is difficult to record AVI.
  5. Lack of useful functions for movie creators ― such as frame advance and frame counter.

It is still allowed for submissions due to historical reasons.

Download patched Famtasia.

Famtasia also has an official homepage, but we do not recommend any downloads there as much as we do not recommend Famtasia itself.

VirtuaNES

Note: For making NES movies, VirtuaNES versions before 0.93 are not allowed. We recommend using FCE Ultra instead.

VirtuaNES is a NES emulator for Windows only, released under the General Public License. The current version is 0.93.

VirtuaNES is considered deprecated, although much better than Famtasia. VirtuaNES versions before 0.93 (and movies produced from these) have a format flaw that always loads a savestate in the file. Version 0.93 fixed this issue. As a result, VirtuaNES v0.93 is allowed for submissions, but not recommended.

Download VirtuaNES (official homepage)

Nintendulator

Note: For making NES movies, Nintendulator is not supported. We recommend using FCE Ultra instead.

Nintendulator is a NES emulator for Windows only, released under the GNU General Public License.

At one point, Nintendulator was one of the most accurate NES emulators in existence, though others have since taken its place.

Download Nintendulator (official homepage)

See also: NMV

Nintendulator is currently not supported on this site for the lack of its usability on other platforms, such as Linux, which is what a few of our judges and encoders use. However the situation may change on demand.

SNES

For SNES, there are two choices:
  • SNES9x
  • ZSNES (tentative)
Currently, the recommended option is SNES9x, and ZSNES is tentatively supported. It is possible that ZSNES will become the recommended choice in the future.

Snes9x

Snes9x is a cross-platform Super Nintendo Entertainment System emulator, released under the General Public License. It was modified by nitsuja.

Download SNES9x v1.43

This v1.43 version is the most stable known version of SNES9x. The majority of the SMV movies on this site was recorded with v1.43 and requires it for playback. (The submission comments should tell you which one to use.) For making movies, we currently recommend this version.

SNES9x v1.51

This v1.51 version has improvements in graphical and sound emulation, and emulation timing is different on many games. Desync bugs have been worked on recently and may be fixed enough for stable re-recording.

Snes9x also has an official homepage, but its official download is not recommended for use on this site.

ZSNES

ZSNES is a Super Nintendo Entertainment System emulator coded using mostly i386 assembly and some C, released under the General Public License. It works in Windows, DOS, Linux, and FreeBSD only.

The official homepage of ZSNES is http://www.zsnes.com/. The official work in progress release homepage is http://ipherswipsite.com/.

ZSNES supports re-recording, chapters, subtitles and other new features added to it recently. It has allegedly superior emulation quality to SNES9x.

Sega Genesis

For Sega Genesis/Megadrive/etc., there are two choices:
  • Gens
  • Gens Plus! (not supported)

Gens

Download modified Gens (Windows) (mirror)

"grrl" hack of Gens (Linux) (no AVI support).
To build a Linux version, follow the instructions in this post at our forums.

Gens is a cross-platform Sega Genesis/Megadrive emulator, released under the General Public License.

For Linux, Grrl is a minimal effort project to make Gens on Linux usable for TASing by providing some basic features, as the version of Gens used on this site has Win32-only modifications that haven't been made cross-platform yet.

Gens also has an official homepage, but its official download is not recommended for use on this site.

Utilities:

  • Input Animator: A program designed to insert decorative input to an GMV to be viewed through the input display.
  • Gens KMod: Modified Gens with debugging tools

Gens Plus!

Gens Plus! official homepage

Gens Plus! supports movie recording, and will emulate Master System and Game Gear games in addition to Sega Genesis/CD/32X games. However, there is currently no version of this emulator that allows for re-recording or slowdown (although it does have frame advance), and Gens Plus! submissions are not supported at this site.

Nintendo Game Boy / GBA

For Game Boy variants & GBA, there is currently only one choice:

Visual Boy Advance

VisualBoyAdvance is a cross-platform Game Boy / Super Game Boy / Game Boy Color / Game Boy Advance emulator, released under the General Public License.

Download modified VBA v19.3

VBA 19.3 is the most stable version available.

Download modified VBA v20[1]

VBA 20 has different emulation timing for Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, but has also introduced many new bugs, and as such can be more difficult to use. It is not recommended for recording Game Boy Advance games due to desync problems.

Download VBA v17

VBA v17 is required for some older movies. It is not recommended to use VBA v17 to make movies.

The official homepage of Visual Boy Advance is http://vba.ngemu.com/, but its official download is not recommended for use on this site.

Nintendo 64

For Nintendo 64, there is currently only one choice:

Mupen64

Download modified Mupen64[1]

Download core update with reset recording (place in original folder)

Mupen64 ReRecording with reset recording is not officially supported on the site yet, however the core update will play standard movies the same way as the original.

Mupen64 is a cross-platform Nintendo 64 emulator, released under the GNU General Public License.

The official homepage of Mupen64 is http://mupen64.emulation64.com/, but its official download is not recommended for use on this site.

Arcade / Neo Geo

For arcade games, there is currently only one choice:

Final Burn Alpha

Download modified FBA (Windows)[1]

Final Burn Alpha is an arcade machine emulator for Windows. It is distributed under a license similar to GPL, but with some restrictions regarding monetary profit and supported games.

It is not supported at this site, at least not yet.

blip has modified FBA to include rerecording.

The official homepage of Final Burn Alpha is http://fba.emuunlim.com/.

DOS

For DOS, there is currently only one (experimental) choice:

DOSBox

Download modified DOSBox from this thread: =forum/t/5285

It is not supported at this site, at least not yet.

Bisqwit has modified DOSBox to include rerecording.

This modified form of DOSBox is currently experimental. Use at your own risk.

[2]: P.JBoy: Is this still true? Is there any point in linking to 0.98.15 any more

FractalFusion: Checking the FCEU thread again, I came to the conclusion that 0.98.16 has been superceded by 0.98.2x, but some games do not work with 0.98.2x and work in 0.98.15, which means that 0.98.15 is necessary but 0.98.16 is not.
