Emulator Resources / Recording Status
This page summarizes the status of the support of
different movie formats at this site.

Emulator Resources
Supported Formats:
FCM (NES, FCEU)
- Some problem identifying PAL movie game. Work has been done around this, but it is a hack, not a reliable solution.
- Allows movies to start from "soft reset + savestate" instead of from "power-on with cleared memory", and there's no easy way to tell them apart from the movie file. (TODO: Verify if this is still a problem.)
- Otherwise no problem here.
FMV (NES, Famtasia)
- Famtasia does not support PAL games. PAL movie playback is wrong speed.
- File does not specify whether game is PAL/NTSC. Site always assumes NTSC, which means the submission shows wrong time for PAL movies.
- Famtasia emulates some sounds and colours badly.
- Deprecated at this site.
- Otherwise no problem.
VMV (NES, VirtuaNES)
- Windows-only. Chances of it being ported to other operating systems besides Windows are slim.
- Emulator version 0.93 is supported, but deprecated. Older versions are not supported, because they don't support "from reset" recording.
- Bisqwit can't make AVI (yet).
- Details unknown.
SMV (SNES, Snes9x)
ZMV (SNES, Zsnes)
- Tentatively supported at this site.
GMV (Genesis, Gens)
- File does not specify whether game is PAL/NTSC. Site always assumes NTSC, which means the submission shows wrong time for PAL movies.
- Otherwise no problem.
VBM (Game Boy (advance), Visual Boy Advance)
- Some emulation inaccuracies
- The Linux port is hopelessly outdated, thus Linux users must either run the Windows version under Wine or use/create patches that may make the Linux version capable of playing back VBM files.
- Otherwise no problem.
M64 (Nintendo 64, Mupen64)
- Graphical errors and timing inaccuracies in many games.
- Plugins often cause difficulties in playing back movies, especially in cross-platform situations.
- Otherwise no problem.
Currently Unsupported Formats:
FR (Arcade, Final Burn Alpha)
- Option is not available to start recording on reset. Apparently, this can be avoided by having the first frame of the movie press the F3 key to reset.
- At the end of a movie, the emulator pauses the game. This means that after a run is over, it will pause rather than continue to credits.
- Not supported at this site.
NMV (NES, Nintendulator)
- Deeply entangled with DirectX-related code. Chances of it being ported to other operating systems besides Windows are slim.
- Not supported at this site.
- Details unknown.
