i'm still trying to finish this game damnit ;) i got the cube late, and started to "seriously" play metroid since last week or so. i'm at about 50% of the items (damnit i want my grapling hook and heat ray :@) but i can see how a speedrun would work, as you can skip any non-door-lock enemies since the game doesnt care about them (respawning enemies). i would watch a speedrun when i'm done though. right now i keep walking forwards and backwards, its still a maze to me :)

The speed runs for this game are actually quite amazing. I never thought it would be possible to beat the game in an hour and a half getting every item. As for the first question, the page you're looking for on Metroid 2002 is more specifically: http://www.metroid2002.com/speed_tricks_space_jump_first_dash_jumps.html But you'll want to be familiar with Dash Jumping: http://www.metroid2002.com/techniques_dash_jump.html I also thought there was a page which discussed how to get it with a triple bomb jump, but I can't find that. :(

Courtesy of SDA this game and speedruns hardly need any introduction. Check out Besmir 'Zoid' Sheqi's speedruns of: - Single-segment 100% in 1:34 - Hard-mode any% in 1:15 - Hard-mode 100% in 1:37

At last, Metroid Prime in H.264! I'd also have kip's run recaptured, but oh well… So which of those three looks more novel compared to all the others at SDA?

It depends on what type of categories you like but I'd recommend the hard any% run. But if you want to be picky, I did not like his scan dashes as they were not 100% optimal. Quite a lot of his scan dashes actually.

Alright, here are my suggestions for anyone who plan to tas this beautiful game. 1. Never walk as walking is the slowest method of travelling. 2. Before each room, position your body correctly for a perfect scan dash. 3. Before each room, it should be faster to step a few steps back in order to pass the gate with full speed. 4. Before each room, in morphball mode, it should be faster to do what I wrote above. 5. Before each room, in morphball mode + boost, it might be faster to actually stand a bit away from the gate and then boost when it eventually opens. I would shit my pants if one could boost for a longer period of time that the camera wont be able to catch up, just like in our Sonic movies :) 6. You have to scan dash from every creature and item possible as that is the fastest travelling method. Well infinite speed is faster but it takes too long setting it up. Some amazing features can be produced in a tas using this method. For instance, there is a room (can't remember the name) in Phazon Mines, there is a room filled with baby metroids, if you kill one or two of them and position yourself for a scandash, you will save a lot of seconds instead of jumping on the platforms. This is just one example as there are lots of others. 7. I belive you should try avoid getting hit (luck manipulation) as your missile stack is rather important. 8. If possible, try prefiring at a gate so that once you are near it, you don't have to unmorph, shoot it and then morph back. 9. You can boost up on some ledges, so you don't have to unmorph and morph back. 10. Investigate if charging is faster than firing single bullets at enemies and bosses. More will surely come..

For bosses, Frame War wise: Which weakness on Metroid Prime 1 deals the most damage the fastest. Ice Spreader (White), Charged Plasmas (Red), Super Missles (Yellow), Charged Waves or Wave buster (Purple). Super Missiles & Ice Spreader deals massive damage and doesn't comsume a lot of missiles like the other 2 beam combos does (Wave & Plasma). The Plasma and Wave beams adds a little extra damage after each direct charged shot. The WR current Any% run has 20 missles and do we even get the Ice Spreader (I haven't watched the whole run)? And I'll laugh if the Wii Version of Metroid Prime's Easy mode beats it in under an hour.

If you're doing an any% TAS, I believe picking up more 20 missiles would be a waste, and if you're aiming for nothing but real time, 10-15 missiles should be enough since you'll use them only for elite pirates and Ridley, on which you can manipulate missile drops anyway. Also, in a TAS you could use free aim (R-button) to make sure every shot connects at the first possible frame of release after charging your weapon, no need for ice spreader in such case. As to Angerfist: 1. This is true, but in cramped spaces you'll want to walk diagonally with L pressed anyway. 2. Of course using wait times to position is going to be used, it is in every game isn't it? ;) 3. When walking, you actually gain speed even while moving onto an object, so you might as well just press against the door until it opens. 4. This is true, and it's most likely faster in real time as well, I know I do it. 5. Boosting over a door might lose you time because you'll get thrown into the air and lose the boost speed, I think, will of course have to try, but I think that it would be faster rolling into the next room and boosting as soon as you're over the... (Tröskel? ;D) (Doorstep?) 6. I guess a couple of more dashes could be in place, but the thing that will save most time is that you can just dash blindly into whatever and retry until you get it right, using dashes that are utilized in runs even today, and not having to wait. I'm sure not all dashes are optimal today, and I have a couple of tricks up my sleeve as well. (I'll write down everything I'll do in every room some day soon.) So the hunt for new dashes will probably take up alot of my time at least, as well as other runners. 7. Not getting hit is going to be a criteria as you'll run with 99 energy and you're not gonna go into any save rooms, I don't think this is gonna be a problem though. 8. With good shots alot of doors and such can be shot from afar, but usually I guess boosting to the door and forcing an instant unmorph (with a little testing should be possible at almost every unmorph in the game where it matters) situation. 9. I have been figuring on this as well, and boosting up slopes and walls can do wonders if you hit them right, it should be possible to boost onto many obstacles or platforms, we'll see how it turns out I guess. 10. Charge beam will always be faster than firing single shots, since every weapon is on a very strict "cooldown". I'm not sure of the formulae for every weapon, but I know for sure that ice deals 3 times as much charged as not, and has ~1 second cooldown between each shot. I picked up Metroid Prime just a couple of days ago, and I'm recording a walkthrough to use for my upcoming speed run. (Shameless promotion yes) I'll see what I can come up with and I'll get to working on what I'll do in the TAS that I'll make at least, and I hope as many people as possible try their best to make TAS'es of this game to break it down as much as possible. I have waited for so long, and I'm getting more and more anxious.

7. No-damage probably shouldn't be absolute, but it's certainly possible (someone had a nontas completed excepting Prime herself only). Also, there are some save rooms you go through, aren't there? Or am I conflating Prime and Prime 2 in that respect? (I do know of them there) 10. Someone had a damage table compilation going on scuk. Unfortunately, scuk no longer appears to exist.

To the best of my recollection, all of Prime 1's save rooms are in branched off rooms, so it's possible to play the game and not go through a single one. Unless you count Samus' space ship (the game prompts you to save after you arrive on Tallon IV).

Even if the save room was in the middle of the path, it would cost alot of time to use it for energy, and consider since what Sir VG wrote is true, in terms of where these save rooms are located, it's not going to be worth it, on the other hand I fully support taking damage, in many cases it's actually faster to take damage, not only with boosting through lava and such, but taking damage from monsters can get you a boost in the right direction when you need one. But as I've said I believe this is all gonna be unveiled as soon as the running begins. One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet though is playing from an SRAM, I know I'm going to be playing from one since many of the tricks and timings of the game rely on being able to cancel a sequence in the right moment. It's not gonna get published that way, but it's sure as hell gonna be faster real time and in game time I believe.

I have gathered all working links from the speed tricks topic at m2k2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IygfOpegQxE&feature=player_embedded http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ESgkUMiHwg&feature=player_embedded From our beloved Craztad:
A few more tricks to point out: You can instant unmorph from the morph ball tunnel to shoot the missle lock door before flaaghra. in magmoor right after flaaghra you can shoot one of the creatures that fly at you and hope they drop life or missles then missle the door and use the dropping to dash to the save station. Also in magmoor in the room where everyone goes through the door turns right to climb the wall and then jumps to the bridge (i don't remember what the room is called), I think you should jump once you come into the room and turn left to grab the puffer for a combat dash over to the back right corner of the big building which just so happens to be the same corner that is used for varialess magmoor runs and then climb the tower while grabbing the turrent to dash to the door. But these are just a few of the things that can be done, it would take me forever to type out all the new things i plan to attempt. Hopefully these few things will get people looking for more timesavers in this game cause every 100 or so timesavers could mean another minute cut off the final time.

Oh and one last thing, if you can manage that bomb jump from the bomb slot to the pipe and then ghetto to the ice beam door, geo core alone we could save about 12 seconds over zoid's 1:03. it is wicked hard though cause most of the time the first bomb i waste knocks me out of the bomb slot hole but if you can latter your bombs right it only takes four out of five of your bombs to make it up to the pipe. Edit: just timed this against sparkys test segment here and it saves closer to 2 seconds.
MJ:
I've found a new dash, I don't know if it saves time through. It's an slight easier way to get the early energy tank in the Main Plaza. Stand to the left to where the energy tank is and lock in to the bridge, Then do a height gaining scan dash and you should hit the tank. I'd upload a video if I had a Digital camcorder. I'm thinking about getting one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAH-xpl5WVA&feature=player_embedded master-88:
I am using that my new 100% runs. Idea like lot geo core bomb slot, but this is much easier. Actually i can make that 50% of the time. This is not that any more random like normal method what Zoid use. Jump towards missile expansion. When you get hit the roof go morph ball. If you did that timing correct Samus stuck off wall and pick up missile expansion. I find that couple months ago but i don,t never mention that already. Sometimes this is even easier than normal method. I think this is bit faster too. At most 1-2 seconds. Is anyone founded that already? I don,t never see that in any current speedruns.

I don't know if it's new, but I think I just found 2 dashes. It could save 1-2 seconds at most, so it's not really worthy but I haven't seen them on any videos, so I thought I should tell. I have nothing to record videos so I'll try my best to explain. First one : right after getting boostball, get on the top platform and lock on the creature on your bottom-right (I don't know the name of the creature, it's the same you used to dash to boostball), then dash to the left bending hard to the right (actually, I used a mix between right and forward). You should land a little further than you would by normally space-jumping as I saw in every run. The downside is that it's probably best that the creature is located at the right most side so the angle of the dash is correct. Second one : only useful in PAL. In Phendrana shorelines, after getting boostball and watching the ridley cutscene, it's possible to dash to the left side without scan-dash, though setting the dash could take too long to be a real timesaver. First, after the cutscene, move to the left border of the platform, then look back and lock the view to the bottom. The creature you want to lock is on the platform below. Jump backwards like you wanted to fall. When you see the creature, release and press L quickly to lock the creature, then use your second jump to get back to the top platform. The rest is just a dash to the left, bending it accordingly to get the closest you can to the door leading to the chapel of the elders.

Edit: This is surely known by some but maybe not all, so I thought I would mention it. If you let the cut-scene play out when you get boost ball you will be facing the right direction to leave the area. When you skip it (cut-scene) you're facing the wall and have to take extra time to turn around. I bet it's the same for morph ball in Ruined Shrine too, though I haven't tested that yet.

WOW, I almost got the early powerbomb in warrior shrine! . I made it into the tunnel but as I was making my way up suddenly the camera changes 180 degrees and Im rolling back out :(. Im sure you can make it in now. The trickis to make contact with the tube and then boost. Sometimes a boost up against something, like a wall, will boost you up. I wasn't recording so no video unfortunatly.

I remember someone made a 3 E-Tank, Varia-less run in Magmoor unassisted and -barely- made it through (like they had 1 or 3 energy left or something) I'm kind of curious what can be done with TASing, but I don't think it'd actually be a time saving maneuver in a real run...

The only problem I can think of when it comes to constantly doing dash jumps (aside from finding the most optimal ones) is the semi-slow turn speed. It's been a while since I've played the game myself, but from what I remember looking around was speedy enough for real time play, but definitely not fast enough for TAS tricks of the insane kind (think of dash jumping then spinning around to dash jump from another enemy without stopping, hitting a few shots along the way, etc etc).

I dont know if you have figured this out, or if it is faster, but as long as there is a blue door, it can be opened with everything, including MORPH BALL BOMBS, which means you wouldn't have to un-morph. Also the doors have a itme limit on them, so if you shoot it, and dont kill the enemies fast enough, you may have to re shoot the doors.

FunnyHair: of course, you'd have to wait for the bombs to go off, and they're very short-range, so almost any time you use bombs when the next room is already loaded, you're wasting time. Depending on how long it takes to unmorph and remorph, it might well always be faster to shoot doors instead of using bombs. I think we can rest assured that whoever TASes Metroid Prime knows the game inside and out. :)

Good point. I watched the SDA run, and they may have used it once. I am not sure though. Still i think you are right. They will find something, and the person will know the game.

Well, you can force an instant unmorph at pretty much every point in the game, I've been playing around with it for a bit in the past, and there's nowhere I found so far where you in a speed run could save time by forcing an instant unmorph where it's not possible. And in many places you might be able to force instant morphs as well. Something else that has not been mentioned so far, or I've just missed it is the time saved by playing from SRAM. Skipping cutscenes not only saves the time it takes to watch them, but also are used for several speed tricks and to manipulate monsters to be in the right place when coming to that spot in the room. To give an example or two of each Parasite Queen and Omega Pirate are both much faster when skipping cutscenes. And skipping the first cutscene in Magmoor for example, and also the one when picking up the Artifact in the same room will allow for manipulating puffers to be in near perfect positions. To answer to HonorableJay, there are several ways around these including bending, and using the "R" (And "L" to an extent) button(s) to avoid losing much speed while turning duirng a dash. That's really nice Angerfist, some of that only apply to console runs though, and other might seem unusable unfortunately. But there's plenty more to be found, and many things that could be handled differently. I thank you for your commitment in this case. There are many more things to consider and discuss, and I hope when time comes there will be alot of interest in TAS'ing this game, and that many people will TAS it. I know for sure already that I will at least. Let's just hope this will be TAS'able very soon.

Given that there are two options for both the first and second games, I think I would rather see a run of the Wii remake.
