The third game in the Megaman Zero subseries takes place two months after its predecessor.

It features mostly the same game play as its predecessors, but with a different Cyber Elf system and customizable armor. Also new are the Secret Disks, which can be analyzed for information about the series, enemies, items, and the characters.

Unlike the other run, this run aims to collect all disks, all sub-tanks, and all Ex-Skills. It also gets a special rank when the final stage ends (Disk Capturer) and unlocks Ultimate Mode afterward.

Emulator: VBA-rr v23.6

Rate of progress:

Here shows more progress below from the new four stages!

Area X-2:

There is nothing special to deal with before the boss fight. What I could do is just to make the wall climbing more efficient and to avoid a melee-kill that causes hit stop as always.

Boss: Copy X Mk.II

Since I need gun for the next stage, I begin the battle with a weapon combination with gun and saber instead of rod and saber which seems more efficient. In fact, rod do saves some frames in the fight but it's not worth an extra menu opening. Copy X is really an active boss because he always bounces around and changes form with invincible time. So I manipulate him to go with my combo to ensure I could beat him quickly.

Snowy Plains:

I didn't activate the Burst Shot ex-skill in the previous movie because it could lead to tons of frames lagged and make you get afraid of using a bustershot when equiping fire body chip. So in this stage, my gun fires without any limit including mid-boss fight. In the beginning, I turn and shoot the second skateboard enemy because if not do so, he will kill two shrimp enemies and cause hit stop. Yes, a damn teamkiller. Memorizing this, We can do some little tricks on the third stake boy to make him team-kill a newly spawned shellcrawler for us. Then we don't need to do a move-back-and-forth action to get its secret disk.

Boss: Glacier Le Cactank

Nothing special. However, in preparation for the incoming stage, I should change my fire chip to light body chip. It is for an "equipment combo effect" which allows you to perform an upslice attack when you are in the last slash of a triple-slash, making it useful for boss fights. So after performing the last fire attack in the battle, I get my body chip changed for faster combo speed.

Energy Facility:

I've changed body chip to light for the "equipment combo effect" last stage, so that Zero can kill the mid-boss instantly and do more damage boosting in the stage. The most notable part is the spiky road after defeating the mid-boss. Anyhow, I force the conveyer line go forward so that I can use it to get acceleration for Zero with only damaged by once, while most of current movies turn the conveyer line backwards and get hurt twice.

Boss: Cubit Foxtar

Combo, combo, over.

Giant Elevator:

I had spent most of my time on this annoying stage so that it finally had been under control. The most difficult part for TAS in this stage, probably the whole game, is the evelator battle. Before entering the stage, I activated the rod ex-skill "Soul Launcher" in 30 frames because it could help me a lot in the elevator part. Plus, in the elevator there is a mid-boss fight. The boss is special due to it can be "knocked down" by some attacks and when it's down, All damage that we inflict to it will be doubled. However, we don't have to "knocked down" it in the way of hurting it. We can just knock its body to make him down instead of getting its core damaged. So that we can perform a powerful charged slash on it, then continue on our combos.

Boss: Tretista Kelverian

A really tough battle since there are few chances for me to do luck manipulation. I thought that I was just lucky then.

So thanks for watching description such a long time. This movie is quite close to completion and I've carefully checked the following work. Trust me, it will be more fun.

With only the last triple boss battle left, I have saved 1099 frames or 18.32 seconds in Route A.

Reflect Laser has a great show in Sub-Neo-Arcadia. The character of bounce help killing a few enemies with one bullet. In the last stage, I did not change the body chip to different bosses. It save more time to kill boss with normal body chip by redusing menus opening.

First 12 missions for route A finished!

Route A: ...Area X-2 -- Sunken Library -- Energy Facility -- Gigantic Elevator... Route B: is the same as my previous TAS's

Route A aims for less menus opening and less unnessesary EX skill. It may takes too much time in Sunken Library, so I will compare two routes while two movie to the routes are done. I felt very lucky that I only lose 1 frame on luck manipulating in Sunken Library.

As I noticed I have done something wrong, I go back to Old Residential Section and save 1 more frame there. I also added some entertainment in Maritime Highway Ruins without losing time.

Sadly both computerbird and red-crown-crane are so busy that they have to stop TASing. I will take all the extra part alone.

Desert of Dusk finished. Saved 59 frames from the current movie at present. I get an before going to Area X-2 so I will get an EX skill of Reflect Laser. Reflect Laser is never used in exist TAS movies, but I found that it can save a little time.

A new route may be picked: ...Area X-2 -- Sunken library -- Energy Facility -- Gigantic Elevator -- Sub-Neo-Arcadia I am not sure whether it save time.

I do little revision in Weapon Regeneration Factory. I get one more point there, so I can get an A after finishing Anatrey Forest and a B after finishing Ice Frontline Base. Shield Sweep has no use so I avoid to get it.

The purpose of this page is to document all the known tricks of the GBA Mega Man Zero games so far.

Because of the nature of this site, we concentrate here on tricks that are nearly impossible to perform in real play, but are useful in the making of tool-assisted speedruns. For most of the tricks, a frame advance feature in an emulator is a definite must-have.

Note: "Zero" on this page refers to the player character Zero, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise.

This is the first Mega Man Zero game in the series for the Game Boy Advance. Unlike most other Mega Man games, Zero really is not in the mood for fighting all the bad guys, and decides to call it quits in the first few missions so that he can skip ahead to the last stages.

This run beats the previous run by 1.76 seconds.

After a long hibernation meant to purge his body of the Wily Virus, Zero is awakened to save Ciel and the resistance. Zero decides to help, but what he really wants is to have some slashing fun.

Unlike the other run of this game, this run doesn't use mission skips, which means that the author had to beat every mission as fast as possible.

This improves the previous movie by 1.91.

Zero is back in his second personal adventure, facing his greatest challenge yet.

This time, the Japanese version is used instead for a glitch only available on that ROM.

This run beats the previous run by 8 minutes and 23 seconds.

Zero has a new body which he does all the same old stuff with. Once again, it's on the Game Boy Advance. As with the other games in the series, there is a delay with every hit of the Z-Saber, so many enemies are killed in other ways. (In particular, in this game, Zero can pick up guns from some enemies and use them for added variety.)

This run is almost 4 minutes and 20 seconds faster than the previous movie, in spite of having over 30 seconds more text due to game version differences. A large part of this improvement is due to new combos. Also, the invulnerability times of midbosses are abused even further with midair wobbling of the Z-Saber or the Z-Knuckles. For more details, see the run's comments.

See also: the forum disscusions on these games.

The basic techniques

Mid-air tricks

Double triangle-hop

You do not have to be right up against a wall to wall-jump; you only need to be within a few pixels of the wall. So it is possible to wall-jump when right up against the wall, and then wall-jump again as you ascend away from it, allowing you to gain extra height.

Taking damage to save time

Overriding attack animation with damage animation

Usually, damage animation interrupts and overrides Zero's current animation being played. As long as the damage animation is shorter than that interrupted, it is a time-saver because you can deliver a second attack or another move sooner.

This is a common trick in many games.

Touching lethal ground while damaged

In many games, damage causes the player character to become invincible for a short time, even to spikes.

While by now this is nothing special, there are situations in the Mega Man Zero series where using this can save you from having to acquire certain equipment in order to reach an item or take a shortcut. You can also climb spiked shafts rapidly without using platforms if there are enemies around.

However, invincibility doesn't protect Zero from death from entering solid ground. (See also Getting killed counterintuitively.)

Moving while incontrollable

A rarely necessary trick, when Zero is damaged, Zero is forced to move away from the source of the damage, even if there is a game event during which Zero is incontrollable.

This has been useful in MMZ4, where you can defeat the boss in Area Zero with ground attacks from one of the top platforms in the room, receive damage from its attack at the same time, and afterward fall off the platform during the immobile period, to save time.

Weapon tricks

General weapon glitches/tricks/tips

Performing long combos on bosses (MMZ1)

Unlike that of the sequels, the combo system of MMZ1 is not implemented with attack levels. The first two slashes of Zero's triple ground slashes and air rolling slashes cause on bosses a short invincibility period that is only 12 frames long, while the finishing slashes result in a much longer invincibility period. Therefore, it is possible to perform a very long slashing "combo" with such slashes that only cause a short invincibility period on a boss.

Transfering weapon charges (MMZ1)

If you insert a weapon into a slot where a different weapon being charged, the status of the charging progress of the replaced weapon will be inherited by the inserted weapon. This allows firing two charged shots or slashes one after another with the same weapon.

Hitting multiple times with a single attack

If the collision box of your attack stays overlapping that of an enemy, the attack will no more hit the enemy after it has hit the enemy once upon contact, unless it is multi-hitting by design. However, if you move the collision box of the attack out of the enemy, it will be able to be hit again. Typically, you can do a jumping slash next to an enemy and keep turning to the left and right while still in the air, to make your slash hit the enemy for multiple times. This does not work if the enemy has boss-typed invulnerability.

Hitting multiple times without interval

If two or more of Zero's attacks of the same attack level (there is only one attack level in MMZ1) contact a enemy that does not have boss-typed invincibility period, they will alternately damage the enemy every frame they keep contacting it.

Specific weapon glitches/tricks/tips

Thermal Shield (MMZ2, MMZ3, maybe more?)

For some reason, the hot metal ladles seen in levels use some "attack" to inflict damage to Zero upon contact, which is very blockable with Zero's shield from the left and right sides. Thus as long as the shield is being held, Zero can touch, slip or jump on the sides of the ladles without taking damage.

Satellite Shield (MMZ1, MMZ2, MMZ3)

A thrown charged shields keeps returning to Zero as long as Zero keeps away from it. Since Zero can move faster than the shield, it can be abused to hit enemies around as long as possible. However, with careful positioning, you can let the shield just encircle Zero standing still. This is useful if you want to keep the charged shield on alert throughout a dialogue or a scripted event during which Zero cannot move.

Leveling up Chain Rod with items (MMZ2)

Chain Rod can be used to attach to and drag items. For some reason, every time its tip hits an item, Zero receives one point of Chain Rod EXP. This can help level up Chain Rod skill very quickly.

Zipping through floors or ceilings with Chain Rod (MMZ2)

TODO: How to?

Dialog and event script tricks

Dialog and event skip

Skipping intros with a button combination

For some reason, you can quickly skip all intro screens before the title screen with the start button in Japan versions of all MMZ games, while you can't do the same thing in other versions. Anyhow, you can use a game restart sequence (A+B+Start+Select) at the first logo screen (MMZ1-3) or the second one (MMZ4) to skip to the title screen.

TODO: Exact frames.

Skipping boss fights, but being unable to complete the game (MMZ1)

In Neo Arcadia Shrine, you can jump up the roofs of all of the "temples" and skip everything including the bosses inside them. If you skip any boss fight this way, all of the later bosses will disappear from their rooms, because the scripts of entering the fights will not be triggered. You can keep going onto Neo Arcadia Tower and meet Ciel[1], but you cannot save the game with her. This glitched journey ends in the room right after Ciel, as none of its exits will open once you have entered it.

[1] If you are playing the USA version of MMZ1, Ciel's dialogue will now be in Japanese. (TODO: What happens in the Japanese version?)

Miscellaneous tricks

Useful glitches

TODO: There could be a few of them to be listed here lately.

Useless but funny glitches

Although currently not useful in a speedrun, these glitches may lead to some new tricks or exploits in future.

Touching spikes without being damaged or dying

When you stand close enough to vertically stretching spikes, you can dash into them and get repelled without being damaged or dying.

Getting killed counterintuitively

Thanks to how detection of collision works, Zero may enter corners unintentionally, and even gets killed being stuck in them for too long (TODO: how long?). This is likely to happen under certain situations:

  • When Zero dashes through a very narrow gap that is broadening, which is formed with a stational block and a moving one e.g. an elevator. Such death is counterintuitive because Zero is not crushed, but gets killed in the opposite way.

TODO: More of such things?
