NES Metroid

  • Platform: NES (Nintendo Entertainment System)
  • Abbreviation: metroid
  • Display name: Metroid
  • Goodtools name: Metroid
  • Game resources: GameResources/NES/Metroid
  • In group: Metroid
Metroid is the first in a long-running game series by Nintendo. It follows bounty hunter Samus Aran as she attempts to retrieve the parasitic Metroids that were stolen by Space Pirates, who plan to use the Metroids as biological weapons to destroy Samus and all who oppose them.

It was a unique game with a focus on exploration, nonlinear gameplay, and power-ups that could be used to unlock previously inaccessible areas. The game proved highly influential in its time and it, along with its sequels, continues to shape the design of indie adventure games to this day.

It was also one of the first games to feature a female protagonist, a fact which was revealed to the player upon successful completion of Metroid within five hours. Needless to say, the TASes published on this site complete the game in far less time.

This is a full completion of Metroid, meaning that all items (100%) were collected.

This is a 8 minute 16 second improvement over the previous movie by Zoizite. Much of the improvement comes from using the Up+A restart sequence, though many new shortcuts and optimizations also save time.

This movie has now been console verified. Watch this run being played on a real NES console.

It was inserted to the database in a history revival project by Bisqwit in autumn 2006.

As for the movie itself... Arc's 4th movie, over a minute faster than his previous. This features the same route but better precision. One large improvement comes from the Kraid fight. This movie introduces the trick of immobilizing Kraid with missiles for a quick victory.

It was inserted to the database in a history revival project by Bisqwit in autumn 2006.

As for the movie itself... it was among the earliest timeattacks on the site. Thus, the gameplay is very poor. It was played on a 20-FPS Famtasia at 70% speed without ever stopping the movie (i.e. mistakes that were accidentally saved weren't undone).

The movie is noted for being the first attempt at Metroid and for introducing the basic strategy that has been used in subsequent attempts (getting missiles from Kraid and then freezing a rio in order to gain access into Tourian).

Metroid is a game that is very hard to play perfectly fast because the jumping is so slow.

This movie is 43.3 seconds faster than the previous version.

Selected comments from the author:
Main improvements in this version:

  • Almost every room played more precisely
  • The first vertical shaft is many seconds faster
  • Missiles are used more aggressively early
  • Vertical shaft from Hell (Kraid's Lair) improved again
  • Sped up clearing the blocks in the small vertical shaft leading to Kraid's Lair
  • Shortcut into Tourian is the most improved section timewise
  • The 5 Zeebetites were destroyed quicker
  • New strategy against Mother Brain

Most Metroid speedruns used to be about 30-40 minutes long.

We recommend reading the author's comments of this movie.

Uses a game restart sequence (up+a on the second controller) to save time in backtracking.

Much of this 34-second improvement comes from taking an unexpected route through Kraid's lair: the doors are tricked into teleporting Samus to different rooms with the help of the door glitch. Another substantial improvement came from using a new strategy in the statue room.

See Metroid Tricks for more information about the door glitch as well as other tips and tricks.

From the author's comments:

This movie attempts to complete Metroid as fast as possible without fighting either one of the minibosses. I use the door glitch twice and Up+A once. I collect the Maru Mari, 30 Missiles, and Ice Beam (no Bombs.)

The older playthrough by the same author doesn't completely avoid the minibosses.

This is a full completion of Metroid, meaning that all items (100%) were collected. Unlike all the other Metroid movies on this site, this movie does NOT use the Up+A restart sequence.

Selected comments from author:
I used an original route, that saved quite a bit of time compared to the usual route. I found a nice shortcut in Norfair that saved 2 to 3 minutes. Ridley and Kraid battles are extremely short.

I abused a few glitches: the door trick, morph jumping, bomb boost jumping. I also use morph jumping to pass through blocks a few times, which I had never seen or heard of before.

I took hits whenever avoiding them was impossible or whenever it would slow me down more than a few frames. I also used them to my advantage in certain situations. I manipulated monster item drops quite a lot to get missiles.

I used a password to get suitless Samus. The password does nothing else.

This particular run of Metroid uses the password "NARPAS SWORD0 000000 000000" to complete the game as fast as possible. The password starts the player off with every upgrade in the game (minus the wave beam) and gives the player unlimited health and missiles, therefore rendering the need to collect any of these things completely unnecessary and allowing the player to quickly glitch to Tourian. This particular run is not very well optimized, there is a lot of room for further optimization and lag reduction but overall the run still beats the current RTA record as of writing (4:44 vs 4:33) and I am satisfied with it. Warning: awesome sfx manipulation, ignore this movie if you want to be surprised once it's complete.

jump sounds, bullet sounds (muted whne exploding trick), movement, music filling (mostly melody but drums too with beams and jumps).

159 frames faster than LordTom, need 3 frames to save 10 frames, and probably can shave more frames if I get extraordinary luck.

I would appreaciate it if you would PM or comment me about the sounds!

"Completely" redone WIP. Better positioning horizontally/vertically, better jumps and OoB improvements. "Resets" the game 93 frames faster by than LordTom.

Newer lua script: http://pastebin.com/F5P4xuGj

Other notes:

  • Currently investigating how to improve Kraid boss.
  • I've removed 3 lag frames by pausing for 1 frame (T, empty, T) so it saves 1 frame overall. However, I believe I get an extended 6 frames delay once the boss died because of that.
  • Lag frames and boss 1st missile shoot time depends on Samus previous state and position and also pauses.

My simple lua script: http://pastebin.ca/2476333

This movie shows all my discoveries so far:

  • You can change direction on "first" frames without losing any speed (after starting the game, after entering a room, after picking up item etc)
  • I decrease my speed earlier before picking up the item so I have a "lower" speed reduction.
  • I do it twice after picking up the item to get a better jump after unmorphing to spawn platform and to shoot the door 1 frame faster
  • Notice that I exit the door with L. While this doesn't save time here, it changes Samus' postion once he travels to next room. Obviously if you would go to right, it's faster to move right (as I did at the elevator)
  • Different OoB ending (edit: also avoided a morph jump)
  • Juggling lag frame positions without changing lag count by shooting and manuevering differently after OoB

19 frames faster so far. Notice that I've actually had to make 1-2 frame delay otherwise the TAS magically desyncs without any ROM change (the trace log is different however)

Glitches and Techniques

Morph Jump

Samus can jump while unmorphing. Press up or jump to cancel morph, then jump. If left or right is pressed between unmorphing and jumping, this will not work. Samus will stop when she lands, losing all forward momentum.

Fall Jump

Samus can jump while falling. Reach the very edge of a platform and release left/right. If done at the right frame, Samus will fall, but still be in the standing position. She will now be able to jump if she hasn't moved. Samus will stop when she lands, losing all forward momentum.

Bomb Boost Jump

Samus can get extra height using a bomb. Lay a bomb and unmorph. The bomb will push her upwards, and you can then jump for extra height, as long as you do not press any movement keys between the bomb blast and jumping. Samus will stop when she lands, losing all forward momentum.

Double Bomb Boost Jump

If even more height than a bomb boost jump is needed, Samus can perform a double bomb boost jump. Don't unmorph after laying the first bomb; instead use its blast to lift Samus up so she can lay a bomb in mid-air. Unmorph and use the second bomb's blast to lift Samus even higher.

Horizontal Bomb Boost Jump

If distance is also required, Samus can perform a horizontal bomb boost jump. Lay a bomb and unmorph. Move very slightly in the direction needed. Samus should move only a few pixels. Jump after the bomb explodes, like a normal bomb boost jump, and Samus will jump very high and far.

Fire Every Frame

Normally Samus can only fire every other frame, because you need to release the fire button for one frame for the next shot to register. She can fire every frame by holding down fire, and every other frame, either press a different movement key, or release movement.

Fire Missiles After a Beam / Bomb

Normally Samus cannot fire a missile if another weapon sprite is on-screen. If you fire a missile, then fire a beam or bomb, you are able to fire missiles afterwards.

Invulnerability Exploits

When Samus is hit, she gains invunerability for a few frames, in which time she can pass through monsters and attacks unharmed. If Samus damages a monster, she can pass through it unharmed for a few frames.

Door Glitch

The door glitch can be used to give Samus access to areas she otherwise wouldn't be able to, including secret worlds. To perform this, open a blue door and stand inside it, but do not enter the next room. When the door closes, Samus will be stuck inside of it. By rapidly morphing and unmorphing, she can move herself vertically through the wall. Do this repeatedly and she will wind up at the bottom of the screen. To reach the top of the screen, stop and jump repeatedly to scroll the screen upwards, before Samus dissapears off the top of the screen.

Block Glitch

In certain areas, there are blocks that Samus can morph jump through. This is very conditional. There must be a single row of blocks two blocks above a platform; just enough space for her to stand between them. Morph and quickly morph jump, and she can pass through the block above. This is very difficult to perform in real-time.

Luck Abuse

Item Drops

As far as I can tell, item drops from monsters are determined solely by the frame the monster is killed. Simply kill the monster at different frames to change what it will drop.

Monster Spawning

Monster spawning can be manipulated to a degree, by the amount of monsters on-screen. You will need to kill a monster about two screens away from the area you wish to manipulate, or before entering a door.

Sequence Breaks and Shortcuts

Brinstar Ice Beam Without Bombs

Use the door glitch downward to get below the row of blocks and proceed normally to the Ice Beam.

See the Any% run, the No-Miniboss run, or the 100% run for an example.

Varia Without Hi-Jump

There are actually four different ways to do this. The fastest is to use a horizontal bomb boost jump from the platform, just before falling through the fake blocks. A double bomb boost jump can also be used. A slower way is to door glitch upward using the left door. The last way would be to lure a waver up to the top area, and then use the Ice Beam to freeze it for a platform. This is difficult, and is the slowest method.

See the 100% run for an example.

Kraid Without Bombs

Use the door glitch downward to get below the row of blocks and proceed normally to Kraid's hideout.

See the Any% run or the 1-Item run for an example.

Lower Norfair and Ridley Without Bombs

Use the door glitch downward to get below the row of blocks. Samus now has access to Ridley's hideout, as well as the many items in this part of Norfair.

See the 1-Item run for an example.

Upper Brinstar Backdoor

Climb the far right Brinstar shaft, until there are no more platforms. Use the rippers as platforms by freezing them and jumping onto them. If the last ripper is in the right position, a double bomb boost jump will lift Samus high enough to get to the next platform, and into the top corridor. Alternatively, the waver that flies around can be frozen to use as a platform to get up, although this is much slower and more difficult.

See the 100% run for an example.

Norfair Energy Tank Quick Backtrack

After getting the energy tank in Norfair, head back to the small shaft to the right. Go to the top door and you can door glitch upwards into the room before the Hi-Jump Boots. Do not exit out the door to the right, or else the shaft will not scroll vertically! Instead get onto the platform with the crawly monster, then jump at full height to the left. The screen will scroll as if you entered another room, but will scroll normally when it is done. If done correctly, you can now exit through the door to the right, and the shaft should scroll correctly.

See the 100% run for an example.

Lag removing trick

Abusing the movement system, you can press different direction on various frames (mostly "first" frames and when Samus reaches the "next" speed (from -1 to -2 for example) while still moving to the same direction without changing the speed. TODO:Find out why. ROM is same after 1500 frames (start-OoB) but different after (OoB-door) 2300 frames

Movement optimizing

Same as above, you can use this to decrease your speed earlier before actually switching direction. TODO:Elaborate side effects (different pos at next room and lag) and effectiveness (low but useful)

RNG

There's two values, $2E and $2F. Subroutine at $C000. TODO:And how to manipulate it?
