While Chrono Trigger (1995) usually takes days to complete, Crono decided he'd rather not have to sit through all the unnecessary stuff, like long cutscenes, unskippable boss fights and key plot events, so he did it in three minutes instead.

The 18-minute improvement comes from utilizing mid-frame resets which were recently implemented in lsnes.

Reading the authors' comments is a requirement if you want so much as a clue to what's going on.

Chrono Trigger is one of the most dearly loved games from the SNES library. In it, you play as Crono and set off on a journey through time to save the world from the villainous Lavos.

The game can be ripped apart in a matter of minutes through advanced save corruption techniques, but in this movie the author forgoes this exploit in order to play through more of the game, and does so in barely more than half the time of the last run in the same category. Don't expect this run-through to follow a coherent narrative any time soon, though — it still skips quite a lot of content.

From the opposite side of the usual formula of breaking a game to reach the credits as fast as possible, Saturn finishes Chrono Trigger in a single pass while trying to get as much done as possible without glitching the game out and spending too much time grinding. Consequently this video actually looks like an otherwise normal playthrough by an extremely skilled player.

This run aims for maximal completion within reasonable constraints that don't sacrifice entertainment too much. This includes:

  • All forms of Spekkio except the highest level (Pink Nu) are defeated
  • All Tabs (stat upgrade items) that do not respawn are collected
  • All characters' Techs are learned
  • All the sidequests mentioned by Gaspar are completed (to the point he no longer mentions them)
  • At least 1 of every equipable item is collected

It isn't technically possible to do everything possible in Chrono Trigger without New Game+ and resetting a few times, but this run aims to get most of it done.

Some very heavy experience grinding occurs between 2:16:45 and 2:26:18. Viewers may wish to skip through this segment of the video.

Chrono Trigger is a long RPG that typically takes hours to days to complete. We already have one tool-assisted speedrun of this game.

However, this movie is different, because it starts from New Game +, which means that the equipment and character stats are preserved from a previous game completion. This run uses a save file which is specifically optimized for an optimal New Game + completion of the game; thus this run should be considered more a concept demo than a rule-conforming TAS.

This beats the game with perfect characters and best equipment in a very short time. The actual time from power-on until the death of the last boss is only about 7.5 minutes, but the ending demo does not start until the Dream Team scene (part of the ending) is completed.

The micro gate in the rightside teleporter is only available in New Game +.

Note: the AVI has been replaced due to incorrect time information.

Chrono Trigger is one of the most popular RPGs ever made for gaming consoles. It is also one of the most anticipated tool-assisted speedruns.

The criterion for finishing the game is to defeat Lavos. The option to do this becomes available to the player very quickly and remains available almost entirely through the game. The ending seen after winning depends on decisions made in the game and the current point in the plot.

In-game completion time at the start of the final battle is 3:48 and it shows 4:01 when the final blow is delivered. (This was checked by viewing the contents of a save-state.)

Note: This movie goes twice into the same battles again and again for the purpose of building the characters’ levels. These sections reside in the movie at 2:20:02 – 2:23:47 and at 3:37:34 – 3:55:16 (nearly 18 minutes). When watching the movie, you may wish to fast-forward over these parts.

"Big deal!", you might say — until you realize he didn't use NewGame+. Pick your jaw up off the floor!

Chrono Trigger is a long RPG that typically takes hours to days to complete. We already have one tool-assisted speedrun of this game.

However, this game also has a NewGame+ mode, where all the equipment and characters' stats are preserved from the previous completions, and player is allowed to fight the last boss, Lavos, almost immediately at the beginning. This movie starts from a save file with optimized equipment and character stats, created specifically for NewGame+. (We do not generally accept movies starting from predefined saves. Read the rules to see our reasons.)

This new version of a NewGame+ TAS by inichi is 2 minutes and 24 seconds faster than his previous attempt due to the discovery of a certain data-manipulating glitch that allows him to deal maximum amount of damage every critical hit. It is only possible to do on the Japanese version of the game, which is the reason for a version change. See the author's comments for a detailed explanation.

The killing blow is delivered in just under five minutes of gameplay, but additional time has to be spent to go through the Dream Team scene in order to make the game actually end.

trying to improve current movie with new tech from RTA route; saved about 20 seconds in the first 36 minutes, though most of that is due to dialogue from shortening character names. Spent about 10 extra seconds picking an extra power tab, but I think I almost made that back in faster boss fights.

Savestate to try to analyse/disassemble the behaviour of the elixir glitch. This glitch consists on equiping the GreenDream (auto-revive) on one character and have the entire party wiped out. Occasionally, when the character with the GreenDream is revived, the menu will be messed up and you can launch items on enemies. Launching an elixir on Lavos is an insta-kill (HP overflow probably). The problem is to make the glitch happen. It is very rare and sensible to a lot of factors: battle start RNG (for enemy attacks, ATB start, criticals, etc.), equipments, timing of commands... :(

This savestate is just before the Inner Lavos fight, and the glitch will happen. You can see it working if Crono lies down for a few frames after being revived. I also provide some savestates where the glitch does not happen by changing something.

I managed to reproduce the Lavos shell skip. However, I didn't know which setup I need for the elixir glitch, which is faster to do before the skip :( So now, I need to determine everything for the elixir glitch and probably do the shell skip again. It's really not hexedit frendly because it's based on making the game lag to make the other characters behind.

For the fight against Tyranno, I can either kill Azala or make him sleep. I tried here to optimise the second choice, and I will do the same with the first one. I hex-edited half of the run to grab a SpeedTab before Masamune, and spent hours to sync everything again, which has the consequence of saving and loosing random frames here and there (this game : ).
