Donkey Kong is a classic game that has been challenged plenty of times at this site, by many players.

The previous movie was considered perfect. But as we demonstrate time and time again, perceived perfection can be trumped by persistence.

The author improved the movie by 8 seconds due to an unexpected glitch in the first level. This also proves that even the most simple games can be broken!

Metroid completed as fast as possible without holding back, and without concern for game sanity.

Uses a game restart sequence (up+a on the second controller) to save time in backtracking.

Much of this 34-second improvement comes from taking an unexpected route through Kraid's lair: the doors are tricked into teleporting Samus to different rooms with the help of the door glitch. Another substantial improvement came from using a new strategy in the statue room.

See Metroid Tricks for more information about the door glitch as well as other tips and tricks.

Chrono Trigger is one of the most popular RPGs ever made for gaming consoles. It is also one of the most anticipated tool-assisted speedruns.

The criterion for finishing the game is to defeat Lavos. The option to do this becomes available to the player very quickly and remains available almost entirely through the game. The ending seen after winning depends on decisions made in the game and the current point in the plot.

In-game completion time at the start of the final battle is 3:48 and it shows 4:01 when the final blow is delivered. (This was checked by viewing the contents of a save-state.)

Note: This movie goes twice into the same battles again and again for the purpose of building the characters’ levels. These sections reside in the movie at 2:20:02 – 2:23:47 and at 3:37:34 – 3:55:16 (nearly 18 minutes). When watching the movie, you may wish to fast-forward over these parts.

The guy who has infinite supply of ammo and destroys worlds bare-chested is back again! And this time he has a shirt and a friend with him.

This very colorful movie by hero of the day plays through the game with both characters at the same time (which is far from trivial to do), and approximately 12 seconds faster than the previous run.

For a movie that completes the game even faster using a warping glitch, see this run.

The Hook, based on a movie of the same name, is a somewhat slow platformer game about small boys in tights killing pirates. Awesome!

The movie has just enough action to make it entertaining. Thankfully there are many parts in the game where the player is forced to fly using fairy dust. The flying breaks the monotony of the game quite well so the movie never has a chance to get boring.

Super Metroid is a sequel to NES Metroid, with bigger and better graphics and music.

Due to how the game tracks time, the in-game completion time is 25 minutes, and 18% of items were collected. However, this movie aims for lowest real time as opposed to lowest in-game time. Compared to the predecessor movie, it accomplishes that 5 minutes and 39 seconds faster.

We also have a movie by Cpadolf which aims for in-game time, making use of the fact that the in-game timer is stopped during certain events. It's 4 seconds slower in real time, but completes the game in 23 minutes and 45 seconds by its timer. It is available only in emulator movie format.

Super Metroid (1994) is widely considered to be the pinnacle of exploration-driven game design, and limits to the freedom of action it allows are yet to be found. As such, surprising improvements come from a lot of esoteric tricks and optimizations, quickly making seemingly optimal movies obsolete.

This is hero of the day's second attempt at this game, improving his previous movie by 85 seconds. A good bulk of the improvement comes from skipping Torizo, implementing additional continuous walljumps, and better boss fights. As previously, only 18% of items are collected.

As with most movies at TASvideos, this one aims for lowest frame count, as opposed to the lowest in-game time. By internal timer, it completes the game in 24 minutes and 16 seconds. Read about the specifics of in-game timing here.

If you prefer going by the lowest in-game time, be sure to check Cpadolf's any% in 23:45.

The encode without door transitions is available here on YouTube.

If real life had savestates, you could be a millionaire.

Starting with just $1000, the author reaches 10 million dollars in under one and a half minutes, proving once again that games defy reality.

This movie is 47.46 seconds faster than its predecessor by the same author. In particular, improvements come from skipping an intro scene, and an improved method of going from $1000 to $100000.

If real life had savestates, you could be a millionaire.

With handy luck-manipulation, the author multiplies starting player money ($1000) by a hundred in a mere two betting rounds of craps in the limit casino. Then he hits the no limit casino; mutiplying by a hundred again with two betting rounds of craps. The player ends the game with 10 million dollars.

Most of the scenes in this game do not relate to gameplay in any way.

Please read the welcome page if you haven't already done so. It explains the rules and methods that apply to all of these movies, particularly the use of savestates and frame advance. Also refer to our Glossary to understand terms we use, such as TAS or other unfamiliar terms.
