Here is the Famicom Disk System version of Zelda II (known as "The Legend of Zelda 2 - Link no Bouken" in Japan) beaten fast by Arc. It is 5:24 faster than the previous version by Boco.

The Japanese version was played because the USA version causes an error in Famtasia. The versions are generally the same, but there are some differences — most noticeably seen in the leveling systems and the load screens. We recommend reading the author's annotation of this movie.

Despite its length and being made with Famtasia, the author considers this movie to be his best one.

Note: Famtasia emulates the sound of this game incorrectly in some places.

Ghosts 'n Goblins (1986) begins with a normal scene: a half-naked knight is on a date in a graveyard with a princess. Suddenly, a demon appears and abducts the princess! The knight quickly suits up and makes rapid progres (sic) through the demon world in an attempt to rescue his royal girlfriend.

Arc is a veteran when it comes to making TASes of Ghosts 'n Goblins. This TAS is his ninth version, and it is 15.083 seconds faster than the previous version by Guanobowl. There is a vast amount of luck manipulation throughout the game, and there are multiple instances of the rare 'boost from enemy damage' trick.

Note: The previous movie ran through the game twice (after the first completion, the game does not show the real ending). This movie only runs through once, hence the much shorter overall time. The actual first-quest time difference is 15.083 seconds.

In Japanese, this game is known as 魔界村 (Makaimura or "Demon World Village").

From the author's comments:

This movie attempts to complete Metroid as fast as possible without fighting either one of the minibosses. I use the door glitch twice and Up+A once. I collect the Maru Mari, 30 Missiles, and Ice Beam (no Bombs.)

The older playthrough by the same author doesn't completely avoid the minibosses.

This is the eighth improved (by 10.77 seconds) version of Jeff C's TAS of this hard game.
Detailed information can be found in the author's comments.

Although this movie was made with Famtasia, the author meticulously catalogued the frame count. Despite the game's appearing to be fairly straightforward, it requires a surprisingly large amount of luck manipulation.

Maniac Mansion (1990) is a unique game that has weird humor and crazy music. It features cutscenes, multiple ways to win, useless items (like Chuck the Plant), and microwavable hamsters. In the storyline, Dave and two of his friends infiltrate the Edison family's mansion in order to rescue Dave's girlfriend. In order to save her, the teens must get access to the inner lab, deal with Purple Tentacle, shut down the ZOM-B-MATIC, and defeat the evil Meteor.

This movie—Arc's seventh TAS of Maniac Mansion—is about 36 seconds faster than the previous attempt. Will the limit ever be reached? Every time a new record is set, it's thought to be final, but then Arc discovers more ways to abuse the game.

The author's comments for the submission help to explain the multitude of tricks and glitches used.

Battle of Olympus (オリュンポスの戦い) improved by 3:33, after more than 8 months had passed since Jackic's last version.

This improvement consists of many minor optimizations. The biggest improvement (timewise) is because of the new way that the hero (Orpheus) collects the 60 olives, which are required in order to buy the ocarina.

People often compare this game with Zelda 2 because of its similar gameplay.

While playing, Arc discovered that it is possible to break the normal collection sequence for the 3 fragments of love. Unfortunately, this sequence breaking does not result in a faster TAS, and so it does not appear in the movie. For a detailed explanation of the sequence break and its problems, see this forum thread.

The movie is an amazing 5:32 improvement to the previous Super Pitfall movie. The author doesn't want to spoil what makes this version so much faster than the last one. You'll have to watch it in order to find out. Hopefully you've already seen the 11:52 version so that you can understand this movie better.

In order to beat the game (the first quest, at least), Pitfall Harry must accomplish 6 tasks:

  1. obtain the Raj Diamond
  2. find the key to Quickclaw the Lion's cage
  3. rescue Quickclaw the Lion
  4. find the flask of medicine, which can heal Rhonda
  5. rescue Rhonda
  6. return to the starting point after completing the previous 5 tasks

In this game, two jovial brightly-colored soliders infiltrate enemy forces. Everyone here runs around menacingly, and bullets are a bit slower than a housecat.

This movie is about a 4 second improvement to the previous version.

Donkey Kong is a classic game that has been challenged plenty of times at this site, by different authors.

Every time before it has been rejected ― either because the movies have been imperfect, or just because the game is too simple.
(Isn't it? Even the video codec thinks it can encode the movie losslessly in a mere 251 kbit/s rate.)

But persistence prevailed (take no hint!), and Michael Reilly got his movie through.

This movie applies luck manipulation to keep the bad enemies out of way so mister Jumpman (later to become Mario) doesn't need to jump so much.

This movie doesn't aim to run up the score; instead it plays an entertaining game of American football by keeping the score close for drama and by utilizing a variety of wild plays with interceptions, fumbles, etc. Thus, the movie manipulates luck often.

Arc: [I] chose Colts vs. Patriots because in recent years the two teams have played many intense, high-stakes games in which the Pats always escape with a victory[1]. :-(

Note that this movie seems to end abruptly, because after the 8 events are completed, the game just repeats the same 8 events with more difficult goals.

Selected notes from author:
There are 3 purposes of this video: 1) To attempt to be 'perfect' in each event at least one time; 2) To show the major consequences of seemingly minor mistakes in play or strategy, e.g. jumping one half step too early (Long Jump), being off by a single degree (Javelin), or missing a bonus (Skeet Shooting); and 3) To show oddities in the game (Javelin, Triple Jump).

Selected comments from the author:
Hello, I tried to do a better run than Morimoto's Ghost's n Goblins after seeing his 2 major mistakes. I was a little bit slower overall as I did some more fighting than him, but at 10:30 into both videos we are at exactly the same point, which is where the cross is located (that he missed). However, there was a glitch on level 6 that caused me to take damage when nothing hit me (due to saving/loading I believe), but I finished out anyway, as it was the only 'mistake.' Anyway, I'll just attach the fmv in case you or Morimoto are interested.

Actually, I rejected this movie back then. I complained that this is too sloppy :) -- Bisqwit

As for the movie itself... it was among the earliest timeattacks on the site. Thus, the gameplay is very poor. It was played on a 20-FPS Famtasia at 70% speed without ever stopping the movie (i.e. mistakes that were accidentally saved weren't undone).

The movie is noted for being the first attempt at Metroid and for introducing the basic strategy that has been used in subsequent attempts (getting missiles from Kraid and then freezing a rio in order to gain access into Tourian).

Selected comments from the author (includes suggestions from me (Bisqwit)):

Here is my 3rd attempt. It runs about 10:18, a 63 second improvement from version 2. I do not think there is a significant amount of time left to chop off, but that 10 minute mark is tempting.

> Watch your video again, and create a strategy of where to walk,
> climb and jump. Find the shortest route (timewise) to where you
> need to go.

Basically I had 2 goals in this run: try to always move forward and not shoot while grounded unless required. I think I achieved this about as well as possible. There are some points you may question so I will try to answer here:

Level 1: Where I jump and do not land on the gravestone, this was intentional. I move backwards when fighting the flying devil, but the timing on the moving platform allows for it.
The plants had to be shot.

Level 2: I go beyond the first ladder to get the big guy off of the top (sort of like Morimoto getting a mushroom instead of star in SMB3). I had to kill him so I could kill the others (they guard the bottom of their ladders).
When I was stuck between the two, climbing was the fastest and only way to survive.
You always have to wait for the lifts.

Level 5: I fought the two big guys because a) the top guy was blocking the top of the ladder anyway and b) the moving platform's timing allowed for it (would have had to wait for it anyway).

Level 6: I first had to move the big guy off of the top of the ladder. Then I fought him because you have to fight the red devil on that floor, or else other red devils appear, and in the end more time is lost, so I feel killing both the big guy and red devil are required moves.

> Keep an eye for all chances take advantage of the
> most obscure features the game has. (Find those features.)

You will see on Level 2 I shoot the 2 big guys by firing through the wall. The jumping backwards shot is still my favorite. Regarding the jumps at the ends of ladders, I don't think they improve speed, but they help prevent accidental crouching or motionlessness. Also at the start of Level 2 I am able to shoot the plant while jumping upwards to avoid the slight pause.

> After you have all that in condition, you can see if you can
> improve it stylewise :)

Sometimes you have to move backwards with the red devil or he will hit you. Most of the time improvement comes from the 6 bosses, especially the dragons (6 hits in the front of the head kills them faster than 1 in the back of it) There was also some luck in avoiding some of the big guys.

> Regarding random enemy movements, I noticed that in Castlevania,
> the game seeds the random number generator all the time from keypad
> input. By pressing some unrelated buttons at right moment, I can
> affect enemy actions. Try experimenting. Find out how to keep the
> enemies out from your ways.

The big guys seem to react solely to the knight. Where he is on the floor beneath/above them dictates where they will go (they follow). They cannot fire or move while being attacked. And, if you use the jumping backward shot at them while running away they are less likely to fire their blue balls of doom.

This version is approximately 97 seconds faster than my last attempt (12:58 to 11:21). It without any major flaws, but there is a randomness factor involved with the 'big guys by the ladders.' Sometimes it is faster to quickly fight them instead of waiting for a chance to go over them, I think. The best scenario of course is that they do not block the way.

This is Jeff C's result of hard work with this hard game. Looks good. (Better than Morimoto's run, which was here earlier.)

Selected comments from the author:
This 4th attempt (10:15) is 3 seconds faster than the last one and has better form. Theoretically it is probably possible to save a few more seconds, but I don't think I will try any more unless I hear of a way to get under 10 minutes.

I changed level 2 a bit and it resulted in a significantly better time for that area. This is also the area where I found the other obscurity. The trick was like Castlevania's floor skipping trick by getting hit. A bat can elevate the knight up one floor, but there was no opportunity to use it in the game, unfortunately.

I was working hard trying various ways to perfect Maniac Mansion with the meteor police route (best attempt was 9:40), when I discovered a glitch that made the route obsolete. :-) :-(

There is a well-known glitch in the game that can paralyze Edna while a kid is in her room. The programmers tried to prevent this glitch from working on Purple Tentacle. However, Arc demonstrates an oversight by the programmers.

There was no time for the hamster in this route, so Arc also included a different movie that completes the game in 10:06 and has the hamster scenes - nuking it in the microwave and also giving it back to Ed. You can download it here (FMV only).

This game has crazy music.

Metroid is a game that is very hard to play perfectly fast because the jumping is so slow.

This movie is 43.3 seconds faster than the previous version.

Selected comments from the author:
Main improvements in this version:

  • Almost every room played more precisely
  • The first vertical shaft is many seconds faster
  • Missiles are used more aggressively early
  • Vertical shaft from Hell (Kraid's Lair) improved again
  • Sped up clearing the blocks in the small vertical shaft leading to Kraid's Lair
  • Shortcut into Tourian is the most improved section timewise
  • The 5 Zeebetites were destroyed quicker
  • New strategy against Mother Brain

Most Metroid speedruns used to be about 30-40 minutes long.

We recommend reading the author's comments of this movie.

This movie is an 11-second improvement to the previous version—mostly due to teamwork introduced in this new 2-player movie in which one player controls two characters.

In this game everyone runs around menacingly and bullets fly slower than a regular housecat runs.

Note: The name of this game is Rush'n Attack. The 'n does not stand alone as a contraction of and, unlike Ghosts 'n Goblins. Given the theme of the game, the pun on "Russian Attack" is quite obvious.
