Mega Man 2 is a game that hardly needs any introduction. This movie plays Rockman 2, the Japanese version, which is essentially Mega Man 2 in difficult mode.

This new movie, played by Shinryuu and Bisqwit, is about 25 seconds faster than the previous movie by Morimoto and Finalfighter. Finalfighter has also discovered a large portion of the new tricks in this movie. Major timesavers include:

  • a new route for the first 8 bosses
  • scrolling horizontally when the screen should scroll vertically
  • damage transfer: when a crash bomb explodes, Mega Man can be used to deal damage

See Rockman Tricks and the submission message for in-depth explanation and answers to various questions regarding this movie.

On this site, we make perfect movies, and then we surpass them. Of course, if we can surpass them, they were not perfect in the first place, but who would have known?

This movie, played by Bisqwit and AngerFist, surpasses the previous Rockman movie by about 48 seconds. All stages were improved by at least half a second, and two stages were improved by more than 10 seconds.

A lot of wall-crossing techniques are used in this movie. Way more than before. It is very difficult for even an expert player to comprehend what’s going on in this movie.

Most of the new strategies come from FinalFighter. Some came from Morimoto. Huge thanks to both of them. A few were discovered by AngerFist and Bisqwit during the making of the movie.

The foundation of all of the techniques used in this movie are explained at Rockman Tricks, but the applications are myriad and complicated. Some of the applications are explained at FinalFighter’s website, but in Japanese.

More detailed information regarding the making of this movie is available at the submission comments page. More tools were used in the making of this movie than in the making of any other movie before this.

Note: This movie was made with the USA version, although the previous movie used the Japanese version. The versions are mostly identical ― in fact this movie plays without desync with either version until the last battle. To play it properly to the end, use the USA version.

On this site, we make perfect movies, and then we surpass them. Of course, if we can surpass them, they were not perfect in the first place, but who would have known?

When "perfection" is defined as "as fast as possible", it requires some sacrifices. Indeed, this movie sacrifices a lot in the playability of the game. Full of tricks to pass through walls, tricks to avoid mandatory battles, tricks to pass through enemies relatively unharmed, tricks to acquire weapon refills in little time — there is very little in this movie left that resembles normal playing. Even death is used as a viable playing strategy that saves time. All of the tricks are still performed by the means of mere controller input, even though portions of the input were calculated by a computer program (approximately 26 seconds in total).

Those who have watched previous Rockman (Mega Man) TAS releases from this site may fast-forward directly to Wily 2. Most of the new stuff happens there now. One can find a technical explanation in the discussion thread.

This movie completes the game about 10 seconds faster than the previous version.

Note: This movie works on both the US and Japanese versions.

On this site, we make perfect movies, and then we surpass them. Of course, if we can surpass them, they were not perfect in the first place, but who would have known?

Once again, this was proven to be the general direction on this site. This movie is an update to the previous movie by Bisqwit and AngerFist, surpassing the previous version by about 22 seconds. Most of this improvement is caused by an esoteric death shortcut in Wily4 stage. For the first time, all robot master refights are skipped entirely.

A lot of wall-crossing techniques are used in this movie. It is very difficult for even an expert player to comprehend what’s going on in this movie.

Most of the strategies in this movie come from FinalFighter and Morimoto. Huge thanks to both of them.

This is a historic movie, submitted and obsoleted before the creation of the database-based (and wiki-based) site engine, before July 2004.

It was inserted to the database in a history revival project by Bisqwit in autumn 2006.

As for the movie itself... This movie by Bisqwit improved upon Linnom's version by 1 minute and 20 seconds. Improvements came from taking damage to save time, better weapon usage, and overall better precision.

Contrary to common belief, Super Mario Bros can be completed without pressing B at all.

This is a sidestroller, speedwalk, or whatever you want to call it...

This is a 7 seconds improvement to the previous walkathon movie that was submitted (and published) on April 1st, 2005; submitted at April 1st, 2008.

Among improvements are a commentary from the actors of the movie and some glitch applications not seen before in SMB TASes.

Note that a 20-frame (0.3 seconds) improvement to this movie is known to be possible, but this version was chosen because it is more entertaining to watch. The faster version can be downloaded here.

This is the story of Simon Belmont's horrible weekend without sleep.

The timeunit count for this movie is 3:15:11.

There are several items that are required for the completion of the game, and you can't buy them without killing a certain amount of monsters, thus this movie has quite much of running back and forth, collecting hearts.

There are a few very impressive glitches in this game - using them could cut the time down significantly. We will probably see a version utilizing them in the future.

Selected notes by author:
When I started, I had no idea how long this game is. I know now ― it's very long. :)
Despite the length, this movie is very fast-paced and the game should be varying enough to keep a TAS movie fan interested the whole three quarter hours.

Note: Famtasia plays PAL games at NTSC speed, that is 16.7% too fast. Thus the encode is significantly faster than the movie should actually be.

Solomon’s Key is a puzzle platform game with an old clumsy magician who has the power of creating and destroying platforms. And through that power, he saves the world.

This movie plays all the rooms of the game, including the hidden rooms with Page of Time, Page of Space, and even a princess of some kind. (Fairy collection rooms were not included.) No warps were used. Due to those secrets, it accomplishes the best ending of the game.

Almost all rooms were improved from the previous movie ― many of them even several seconds faster. The precise times can be found in the submission message.

NOTE: In case you are wondering, the author could have used death as a shortcut in one room like he did in the previous movie, but chose not to.

Lunar Ball, known as Lunar Pool in the US, is, as the name suggests, a pool game for the NES with the curious ability to adjust the friction of the surface of the pool table. Indeed, it is quite possible to play with no friction, and while this may sound easy, it actually proves to be impossibly difficult due to removing the major obstacle from the balls just continuing to roll forever, causing the game to never end.

With some heavy support from a bot (and massive loss of sanity), the author manages the nigh-impossible feat of making it all the way to the end of all 60 tables even in the face of this overwhelming opposition.

Reading the submission notes is highly advisable to explain some of the oddities such as the occasional pocketing of the cue ball. (In short: The cue ball is deliberately pocketed in order to avoid getting a perfect score on every level because the point counter would take unbearably long to tick all the points, up to a half minute per level.)

For more heavy optimization of pool tables, see also the run of this game with the default friction level.

Lunar Ball, known as Lunar Pool in the US, is, as the name suggests, a pool game for the NES, comprising 60 stages of oddly-shaped tables.

With some heavy support from a bot and the help of an unusual glitch on two tables, the game is completed in record time.

The friction of the pool table can be adjusted; in this run it is left alone. See also the frictionless run. Reading the submission text is recommended.

The emulator movie requires FCEU 0.98.15 or an earlier version of FCEU. On later versions of FCEU, the last table desyncs.

Kage no Densetsu (影の伝説) is a story based in old Japan. The beautiful princess Kiri has been kidnapped by evil ninjas. Many samurai warriors were sent to rescue her. None ever returned. The player is Kage, a young ninja who goes to rescue the princess Kiri.

Speedrunwise, this game is all about luck manipulation. Like any good ninja game, it hides many secrets inside, and the player (Bisqwit) set out to discover every one of them that is important in making a TAS. A detailed story of those secrets can be found in the submission message, but in conclusion it lead into this 28-second speedup compared to the previous movie by Walker Boh.

The theme music of this game sounds a lot better if you imagine it being played on a Japanese koto, like this: http://bisqwit.iki.fi/music/misc/kage.mid

As for the movie itself... This is Bisqwit's 2nd attempt but our first publication on record. It uses the same warp route as modern movies but does not use modern time-saving glitches (as they were not known at the time). Power-ups are avoided in this movie. In 1-2 there is a nice use of a wall-jump to save time.

The total completion time of a warp-using Super Mario Bros 2 run from poweron to hitting the axe has now reached 8:20.57, which is 0.86 seconds faster than the previous version which was released a few days ago.

In the strange-looking screenshot in this movie entry, we see Mario ducking and shooting at the same time.

My sixth attempt on Castlevania.
I'm quite satisfied with this video, although it isn't exactly as fast as the fifth version which was damaged.
It's faster than the fourth version, however.
The two most useful tricks in this game are definitely 1) using monsters to throw you around and 2) using bottles to walk safely past enemies.

This is Bisqwit's new tool-assisted Rockman timeattack.
(Mega Man was originally known as Rockman in Japan.)

It is 1 minute and 23 seconds faster than the previous Rockman movie by the same author.

This movie abuses the minor glitches of the Rockman physics more than ever before. And this is an understatement. Many new techniques were discovered during the making of this movie. Even the route changed completely. Watch it...

There are countless difficult tricks and techniques involved, most of which have been added to the Rockman Tricks collection page.

Some interesting pieces of information:

  • The making of this movie took 8 months - most of which was spent planning how to play the Bombman stage.
  • Certain small parts of this movie have been played by a robot (approximately 8 seconds in total).
  • The ROM of the game was disassembled to find out how to manipulate the bonus drops.
  • When more than 50% of this movie was completed, this movie was constantly in state of being made obsolete. New strategies were continuously found for already-played levels. Therefore, most levels have been completely done over at least 3 times. For this, copypasting was invaluable.

See the submission comments for details.

"Ninjas should think beyond normal."

This movie extends the physical laws of Rockman world beyond the impossible and ends up being 3.5 minutes faster than the previous Rockman movie by Morimoto.

There are countless difficult tricks and techniques involved, most of which have been added to the Rockman Tricks collection page.

The author is now working on a new version that will be at least a minute faster than this movie.

Note: To see the fastest NON-TOOL ASSISTED Rockman completion movie, download this file: rockman-nes-omega_23.12.fcm It was played by Dada, on April 20th 2005. The completion time is 23:12. It was recorded using the FCE-Ultra emulator, but without using savestates or slowing the game. (Unfortunately, this claim cannot be proven.)

This movie completes the PAL Rygar with only one item: the grappling hook. After collecting some experience, it uses a glitch to go straight from a boss fight to next, ultimately fighting a long battle against Ligar.

We recommend reading the rest of the author's comments.

Note: Famtasia plays PAL games at NTSC speed, that is 16.7% too fast. Thus the AVI is significantly faster than the movie should actually be. The real length is 11:04.

Uses warps and difficult tricks.
I'll probably try to make a warpless version someday.

In case you're wondering... the monster and the flame it breaths are two different objects. It's possible to jump between them.
This video could probably be improved by ~10 seconds by better planning and ~1.5 minutes by finetuning Dana's jumps. The game is quite hard, and I'm happy I got this done anyway :)
There are many more goals in this game than to just pass all levels... Including some secret levels. Many levels are much more difficult when you try to collect the items required for those quests. This speedrun ignores all those goals.

This is a historic movie, submitted and obsoleted before the creation of the database-based (and wiki-based) site engine, before July 2004.

It was inserted to the database in a history revival project by Bisqwit in autumn 2006.

This marks the third SMB movie by Bisqwit and is approximately 2 seconds faster than his first. It does not take advantage of many glitches & tricks known in modern times but does a good job focusing on entertaining the audience while not losing time.

The improvement from the previous movie seems to be simply the removal of a few seconds mistake/entertainment decisions in world 8 (where Bisqwit chose to play around with a koopa shell or hit a random coin block).

This movie is the 2nd of Bisqwit's movies published (his 3rd attempt). It is a mere 3 frames faster than the previous version.

This versions takes a number of detours such as playing with a koopa shell, getting a random coin, and taking time to show off a wall jump.

My fourth attempt on SMB2, which is about 60 seconds faster than the second version and about 30 seconds faster than the third version. Uses warps.

Comment from Bisqwit:
The warp from 4-2 goes to 6-1, not to 7-1. (Several people have asked me why I didn't use it.)

This movie takes the same route and character choices as previous movies but is a complete redo with greater precision.

This is Bisqwit's 5th attempt at this game, about 7 seconds faster than his previous attempt. This movie uses Luigi for 1-1 (and still takes the long route), otherwise it is the same route & character choices as previous attempts. This seems to be the first movie to fully use the ceiling route in 7-2 in the way it is done today.

This is the earliest Super Mario Bros 2 (USA) TAS on record. It uses only Luigi. It doesnt' utilize the many tricks we know of today.

It also fails to use the shortcut route in 1-1. It does manage to avoid using the carpet in 1-2. More significantly, it forgoes the World 4 route and takes the World 5 one instead.

This movie uses a variety of characters and not just Luigi. Like the previous, this one uses the warp in world 5 instead of world 4, and fails to use the shortcut in 1-1. This movie also makes an interesting choice of Mario for 5-1.
