Ninja Gaiden involves an ultra superior ninja, capable of defying the laws of physics by climbing through walls, making dogs explode with his sword, and all while beating bad guys in record time.

After a whole decade, this collaborative run improves the previous movie by 75 frames.

Scumtron's commentary are available in all encodes as soft subtitles, as well as in the .fm2 movie file, which also includes TAS notes.

Award - NES TAS of 2011
Battletoads (1991) is a futuristic beat 'em up known for its graphics and extreme difficulty. The story is that the sexy Dark Queen who wants to rule the universe has kidnapped Princess Angelica and a toad named Pimple. Two other toads, Rash and Zitz, attempt to rescue them and defeat the Dark Queen.

Maybe you thought Battletoads was a game full of amphibians, but it is actually full of bugs. Those beta testers really should have spent a little more time on this game...

In this run, feos and MESHUGGAH beat the previously fastest TAS of this game by 2:22.16, this time using 2 players instead of 1. You will laugh, you will cry, but most of all, you will wonder how in the world they broke this game so much. Do yourself a favor and read the authors' notes.

To see the game broken even further with the use of memory corruption, watch this run.

Duck Tales is a classic game in which Scrooge has to collect treasures from all over the world. Some of the levels are not completely straightforward, and collecting items is sometimes necessary before proceeding. His cane also doubles as an almighty pogo stick that can be used in various ways, which makes jumping a lot more fun.

This is the sixth TAS of Duck Tales. Minor improvements and refined strategies here and there contributed around an additional half second of improvement.

This is a 0.58 second improvement over the previous movie due to general optimizations including lag reduction and subpixel optimization.

You can watch this run played back on a real NES console.

Kirby's Adventure is a colorful game that's very long for a NES title. However, a bug was discovered which caused unpredictable results (including triggering the credits) upon using the Stone power while entering the water.

This movie saves over five minutes from its predecessor. This is because instead of playing multiple levels to reach a spot for the glitch, a new wall-clipping trick is used in the third room of the very first level.

This movie was also the result of an intense frame war that spawned over a dozen attempts and ultimately resulted in an improvement of over 3 seconds of the initial attempt.

This movie has two YouTube encodes. The primary version has deliberately glitched ending graphics, whereas the second one displays proper graphics. Both versions have identical input except for the last frame.

Scrooge McDuck is advanced in years, he travels around the lake with Niagara on one side and Scotland on another, and beats money out of half-transparent bosses. He hides in the sand and rides the vertex, gets lightning strikes and beats liquid D-1000 robot with his little toe. He also jumps on his pogo stick like he has dementia. Or maybe all that is just a fancy of his senile mind?

The authors, feos and MESHUGGAH, complete the game 3.66 seconds faster than the previous movie by adelikat by minimizing lag, general optimization and some new tricks.

This movie does not get the best (100%) ending, but also does not get the worst (no money).

Battletoads (1991) is a futuristic beat 'em up game known for its extreme difficulty spread over 16 difficult levels. The mechanics in the game also change drastically from level to level, making the game one of the hardest and most varied for the NES.

In this game, the second most diabolical evil genius in the universe, The Dark Queen, has kidnapped Princess Angelica and Pimple - a battletoad. Rash and Zitz must save them by traveling through the most insane multilevel set of plans ever designed. This includes falling down huge shafts, racing through obstacle courses at breakneck speeds, riding on snakes through a massive maze of spikes, passing through a killer ventilation system, navigating through a missile defense system, climbing a never ending revolving tower, and much much more. Along the way, the Battletoads must also face off against an evil army of robots, genetically engineered rodents, and The Dark Queen herself.

In order to make the game a bit easier, its creators embedded some secret warp zones to skip a few early levels in their entirety. But that simply wasn't good enough for MESHUGGAH, feos & Koh1fds; they decided to travel directly to level 3, where they invent their own warp and skip right to the grand finale. They took a glitch found in this TAS and exploited it even further, to the point where the Dark Queen just gives up and returns Angelica and Pimple, going off to hatch an even more evil plan for next time. The glitch is done by breaking the game execution and sending it right to the game ending.

This run conquers the predecessor movie by 0.84 seconds by using a more accurate core and a newly discovered void jump trick.

Snake Rattle 'n Roll is a 3D game mostly about collecting the "nibble bibbles" or something like that. The biggest part of the game is the tricky maneuvers required to complete the big mountain levels.

This movie is a 35 second improvement to the previous author's movie, due to using better lag management, platforming, and routing. No warps are used.

There is also a one-player run available.

Metal Force is an unlicensed game developed by Open Corp. (who also made Buzz and Waldog) and released in 1994 in South Korea. It is of surprisingly solid quality for an unlicensed title. It controls similarly to classic Mega Man games, except you have two different weapons which you can switch between and upgrade by collecting powerups from enemies. Aside from that, it is a linear adventure comprised of 7 missions, with a boss battle at the end of each. The stages of each mission are quite expansive and packed with enemies and obstacles.

This game was run as part of TASVideos' Dream Team Contest 5, and this TAS was built on a combination of multiple submissions of said contest - hence the high number of authors.

In this TAS, the authors make expansive use of the weapons and the various boosts in order to beat the game in 13 minutes and 9.6 seconds.

This game is based on the movie of the same name, although some liberties are taken to give Arnold a chance to punch some hobos with boomerang tophats and go on an even more extended car chase than in the actual movie. There is also some terrible yet strangely hypnotic music.

This run by MESHUGGAH improves the previous one by 15.39 seconds through overloading the object table to prevent some enemies and objects from spawning, better health management and various optimizations. For more information, see the author's comments.

Driar is a homebrew game created in 2012 by David Eriksson and Stefen Adolfsson. It is notable for being an homage to classic NES games with no modern influences whatsoever. No score, no save points, no passwords, no timers, no plot, no hub-world; just a series of single screen levels for you to carefully complete, in order, or until your 10 lives are used up.

In this run, MESHUGGAH moves the eponymous dinosaur through all 38 levels and beats the game in record time.

In this game you are supposed to hunt down an evil crime syndicate (so what else is new?) by freeing kids from blocks of ice, and capturing the red guys to get clues. Unfortunately the ninja didn't have time for that, he just walks past all baddies and kills the bosses.

The syndicate turns out to be selling drugs, but the Black Manta sets them straight: Drugs kill you think you're cool but you're not. Yeah!

This version is 23.71 seconds faster than the previous version by adelikat. We recommend reading the author's comments for this movie.

This game has a crazy main music theme.

It has also been verified to play back on a real NES console.

Rod Land is a game with as many incarnations, as differences between them. In their NES outing, Tam and Rit overcome a rare video game impediment - the inability to jump - as they go around stages, trapping enemies with their magic rods and smashing them to make power ups. Hm, I wonder where I've seen that before...

In this run, MESHUGGAH uses precision and lots of luck manipulation to beat the game in under 8 minutes.

Cross Fire is a 2D Platformer game, developed and published by Kyugo Boueki, which was released in Japan in 1990. It has gameplay somewhat reminiscent of the Contra series, as you control Eric the soldier on his quest to fight evil all over the world.

The player begins armed with grenades and their trusty fists, but soon receives a sub-machine gun to help mow down their enemies. In this run however, MESHUGGAH ignores its intended purpose and instead uses the machine gun to hover, pass through walls, and even skip boss fights entirely. Assisted by the world's most determined helicopter pilot, the game is completed in just under 6 minutes.

A boy named Satoshi suffers from a unique type of color blindness — he can only see in black and white. However, he also has a special ability to turn solid objects intangible and vice versa! But despite the amazing power he holds, Satoshi only wants to see like a normal boy. He seeks out an answer to his vision problem in a mystical manor called the Denine Devil Mansion, where he meets a scientist who offers him a game. If Satoshi wins, he might gain the ability to see in color. With that goal in mind, Satoshi accepts the offer and begins the Inversion game.

In each level, Satoshi must collect all of the keys to open the door to the next map. He can use his special ability to change the solidity of all objects in the level and reveal solutions to the game's many puzzles. Springs, moving platforms, vertical conveyor belts and levers can also be used to his advantage.

In this run, MESHUGGAH uses a few tricks and a lot of precise movement to help Satoshi beat the game in record time.

Street Fighter 2010, completely unrelated to the fighting game series, is a unique game to say the least. The player must go through a series of levels, collecting enough powerups to warp from one to the next.

In this movie, MESHUGGAH & Challenger beat the previous run by nesrocks by 10:49.08 minutes. This major improvement comes from a new glitch only available on the Japanese game version, where it's possible to finish any level if you die and hit Pause on the correct frame.

One of the few games for the Virtual Boy which actually offers a first-person perspective, Teleroboxer bears many similarities to the Punch-Out!! games — except it's substantially easier to manipulate. Indeed, it's possible to effectively autofire punches thanks to distinct controls being used for the player's two fists, which leads to ridiculously quick defeats.

This movie is a 16 frame improvement to the previous version.

Note: The name of this game is Rush’n Attack. The 'n does not stand alone as a contraction of and, unlike Ghosts ’n Goblins. Given the theme of the game, the pun on “Russian Attack” is quite obvious.

Alter Ego is an NES homebrew port of a ZX Spectrum puzzle game of the same name. You control a character who can switch places with his shadow a limited number of times in each stage. The goal is to collect all the items without touching any enemies. To further complicate matters, the blue-outlined items can only be collected by the shadow, whereas the pink-outlined items can only be collected by the main player.

This hardly stops MESHUGGAH, though, who barely avoids death in a number of puzzles and finishes in record time.

B.C.'s Quest for Tires is a 1983 video game developed by Sydney Development and published by Sierra On-Line. It was released for not just the ColecoVision, but also the Commodore 64, Atari 8-bit family, ZX Spectrum, MSX, and Apple II. The game is based on the comic strip B.C. by Johnny Hart, with the title being a play on the title of the contemporaneous film Quest for Fire.

In the game, the player takes the role of the caveman Thor, who has to rescue his girlfriend, "Cute Chick", who has been kidnapped by a dinosaur. To do this, he must travel on his stone unicycle (actually an impossible wheel) through several levels. Each level has Thor moving from the left to the right, avoiding various dangers.

Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger is an action platform game based on Japanese TV show of the same name which later inspired US TV series Power Rangers. As in the show, the villain witch Bandora is plotting an evil scheme and zyurangers set out to stop her. The game consists of five stages each ending with a boss fight. Each stage is assigned to one of five zyurangers. The ranger starts with a blaster, but by entering a door halfway through the stage he gets his respective legendary weapon. Legendary weapons are stronger than the blaster, but in most cases have limited attack range. If the player collects ten coins scattered in the stage, a picture of zyuranger's respective mecha is shown and the ranger's health is fully replenished. Between the stages the player is challenged to one of three possible minigames: a simple quiz, a pong-like game or a bomb toss game. These minigames can be selected and played from the main menu, with the latter two available for two-player mode. The game has a password feature.

Dragon's Lair is much better known in its incarnations for other platforms as an FMV game with only slight amounts of control over the player's action. The NES version is more of a traditional platformer, but very smooth animation for the era and funny-looking characters inspired by the cartoon graphics of the other versions - this includes the final boss, who isn't seen very much in this run thanks to abuse of the game mechanics.

This is an improvement of around a second to the previous run.

The game is considered ridiculously difficult, but MESHUGGAH beats one loop of the game in just 1 minute and 40 seconds, making it look easy.

Archon: The Light and the Dark is Battle Chess to the extreme. Instead of just capturing the opponent's piece like a wimp, upon confrontation, the two pieces are placed in a "combat arena" in which they must fight to the death. The game is won when either all of the opponent's pieces are defeated or all five Magic Squares are held at once.

Like in the previous movie, author MESHUGGAH uses the latter to complete the game, this time 5.39 seconds faster thanks to better luck manipulation and strategy.

In the third installment in the Donkey Kong series, Stanley the bugman discovers Donkey Kong in his greenhouse, releasing insects that are attacking his precious flowers. To save his flowers, Stanley aims to stop the ape by blasting him away with a bug spray can.

BreakThru is a short, fast-paced game developed by Data East. It was released to arcades in 1986 and later ported to a few home consoles. You are the driver of a blue dune buggy, and your mission is to recover a stolen fighter plane, which lies behind 5 enemy lines that you must "break thru".

MESHUGGAH improves the previous movie by roughly 1.5 seconds, thanks to better optimisation. He strikes even more fear into the hearts of his enemies than before by tearing across the landscape and shooting everything in his path.

Popeye is an arcade video game developed by Nintendo, designed by Shigeru Miyamoto. In it, Popeye must dodge Bluto and his infinite stack of beer bottles, and other threats that come in his way such as skulls and vultures - while collecting a number of hearts, music notes or letters spelling "HELP" from Olive Oyl.

In this tool-assisted speedrun, MESHUGGAH plays through one loop (three stages), while aiming to get as high a score as possible.

Said character now has to fight through enemy military and alien forces over the course of 8 levels of varying awfulness.

If what was done in this movie was possible in real life, economies worldwide would crash.

Ghostbusters is a hastily produced game based on the 1984 movie of the same name. The NES version is a notoriously bad port, and the Japanese version contains a glitch that allows the Ghost Alarm item to be sold for more than it costs, allowing entry into the Zuul Building much earlier than intended.

In this movie, MESHUGGAH improves the first run of this game by 38 frames through a few small optimizations. See the author's notes for more details.

Note: A bug in the Japanese version causes the ending screen to incorrectly display "りり". This movie will also sync while the PAXKKLAA Game Genie code is used, which shows the corrected text:

Conglaturation !!!

You have completed a grate game.

And prooved the justice of our culture.

Now go and rest our heroes !

This run improves the predecessor movie by 2.32 seconds thanks to better handling of menus and optimizing punch patterns.

As with every other bowling game in existence, you roll a ball down an alley in an attempt to knock down 10 pins. To do this in this game, you have to try and match up two gauges: Spin and Power. The Spin gauge determines how far left or right the ball will go, and the Power gauge determines how hard your character throws the ball.
