Once again, Genisto manages to perform a complete jaw-dropper.

Most of us knew that Genisto has been working on an improved SMB2 movie, but I don't think anyone could have expected the improvement to be seventeen seconds!

This is definitely a must-watch.

If you are wondering how some of the tricks in this video works, go to the Super Mario Bros. Tricks 2 (you won't find it at the How Stuff Works site!).

This run played on a real NES

Once again, Genisto has surpassed the presumed limit of tool-assisted SMB3 speedrunning.

The differences between the Japanese and USA versions of SMB3 entail a few seconds of change, but most of this 19-second improvement's enhancement is because of Mario's passing through walls in the final fortress ― a trick that was discovered by Bisqwit.

There are also some other new strategies that Genisto uses in this movie. Once again, of course, Genisto has acquired 99+ extra lives magnificently.

Resurrection of Hitler: Top Secret (ヒットラーの復活) is the original (Japanese) version of Bionic Commando. It is a platform game with a hero who can't jump but can quickly latch onto objects with his bionic arm. One can guess from the game's title that the hero's objective is to end the Nazi's efforts to resurrect Adolf Hitler.

This TAS is about 0.5 seconds faster than the previous version; it merely changes some very minor parts.

Note: Hitler no Fukkatsu and Bionic Commando are not the same game. According to Feitclub, major differences include:

  • "HnF" has more enemies in every stage, and more obstacles along the way. For example, there are land mines in Area 7 and giant spiders in some neutral areas. Also, I believe the patterns of the enemy attack trucks are different, because I seemed to encounter them more often in this game despite using the same route as "BC."
  • All references to Nazis and all swastikas were removed from "BC." The evil leader of "the Badds" was re-named "Master-D." Graphically, however, he is undeniably Adolf Hitler in both versions. This resulted in quite a shock to me as a child!

This version is really faster than the previous on some levels, but emulator differences (specifically Famtasia's faster loading time) balances out the time.

This is the real Super Mario Bros 2. It was never officially released in the USA and Europe. It was later ported to SNES, and released as "Lost Levels" on Super Mario All-stars. Phil remembers there were pirate copies of this game under the name Super Mario Bros. 3.

This is a TAS of the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2, a.k.a. 'The Lost Levels', using a suboptimal punk called 'Luigi'. He jumps higher than Mario, but acts slower in many ways. However, the movie is in no way worse than the Mario version - some new creative solutions have been found.

Taking a break from the usual goal of pure speed, Genisto instead decides to break Super Mario Bros 3 from the Super Mario All-Stars pack. This run demonstrates programming errors, abuse of the game engine and commits suicide in ways most people have never even considered.

This is Genisto's TAS movie of Duck Tales 2, 41 seconds faster than the previous version by Exim.

Quote from Exim (for his movie, but applies to this one as well):
This one has the "bad" end. (not the worst)
There are 3 endings: no money earned; earned some money and found all 7 map pieces. I'm thinking about doing the best end but I don't know if this would be interesting because I'd have to visit some places twice and it would be a lot longer.

Battletoads (1991) is a futuristic beat-'em-up game that is known for its graphics and extreme difficulty. This is the story of Dracula's curse from the times before the first Castlevania game.
The original name of the game is 悪魔城伝説 (Akumajou Densetsu, meaning "Legend of the Demon Castle").

Technically, this game has a really high quality soundtrack - mostly because it uses a VRC6 chip that the Nintendo of America considered too expensive to include in the game cart.
That's why the movie was made for the Japanese version instead of the USA version.
(No, it still isn't SNES quality yet - don't be disappointed.)

This movie is interesting, because the game is complex and difficult and the soundtrack is good.

Arkanoid (1987) strongly resembles the arcade game Breakout (1976). In Arkanoid, the paddle is actually a spaceship, and the bricks are space walls. The goal of the game is to break through the space walls and defeat the villainous Doh in order to escape from the space labyrinth.

This incredible TAS of Arkanoid, made by Genisto, inspires awe in a manner comparable to adelikat's Gradius movie. No ball is ever lost, even though three balls are juggled in almost every level.

A new tool-assisted record time at Super Mario Bros. The length is 4:59.92 (17995 frames), from power on to ending the input. Axe is touched at frame number 18012 (5:00.20).
It is 64 frames (1.07 seconds) faster than the previous version.

Selected quotes from the authors:
We sincerely thank Mana for showing us some strategies. It helps us in this version. Also, thanks to Michael Fried, his video inspires me to collect some more points where Mana failed to achieve.

Even in simple-looking games you can always find more time-saving tricks to exploit if you look hard enough. See what we've found at the Super Mario Bros. Tricks page.

The completion times for each level are:

  • 1-1: 370
  • 1-2: 347
  • 4-1: 341 (fireworks)
  • 4-2: 356
  • 8-1: 200
  • 8-2: 342
  • 8-3: 244
  • 8-4: 316

For extra curiosity, see a slightly edited version (for Famtasia). It introduces the hat-stomping trick in 8-2 and ends the movie properly at hitting the axe.

This is a hack of Super Mario Bros, called Air. The homepage of the hack is: http://nightbug.net/mario/air/airmenu.html (Japanese).

Defining aspects of this game:

  • Very unforgiving. Intuition will not work. Mistakes are not allowed. Most paths are one-way.
  • In order to complete the game, the player is required to collect some mushrooms, only to lose them soon thereafter.
  • In order to complete the game, the player is required to abuse many of the glitches of the game (such as passing through walls in a multitude of different ways).
  • Savestates are practically required for completing the game.
  • You can jump any time you wish, even if you are in air. Genisto however avoids using this feature except when necessary.
  • This movie involves a death. As the game starts with 0 extra lifes, the player must gain one 1UP to afford that death.
  • In stage 3-2, Mario just sleepwalks through the stage. The player has no control there.

If you want to complete this game yourself, do not watch this movie! This movie spoils some solutions.

Anyone can make as psychedelic looking hack as this one is, but it is not as mindless as it first seems. It has been designed by someone who has firm knowledge of the game's quirks, and you need to have the same level of knowledge in order to complete the game.

Gaining the 1UP is accomplished by collecting 100 coins. However, most of the coins are either hidden, or trapped so that they must be collected in a certain order. Some coins are traps in themselves, and must not be collected, because doing so the player would not be able to return to the right path.

The death, however, is not mandatory. As Bisqwit demonstrates, the game is also completable without death (and thus, without collecting those coins). (Note: The shooting at Koopa in the demonstration has nothing to do with this point. It only shows that the hit counter overflowed.) Bisqwit is unsure whether this manner of completion is what the creator of the hack had in mind. Considering that dying leads to the lowerside tunnel, it is possible that the death was intended to be mandatory.

Genisto has explained some aspects of this game, and of the movie, in his submission comments.

The following attributes apply to this movie:

  • Abuses programming errors. There is no other choice.
  • Uses warps. There is no other choice.
  • Does not play as fast as possible. Rather, Genisto introduces this hack in a good way.

A little-known game based on an old cartoon, in Bucky O'Hare you soon have access to 5 unique characters, each of which has a special ability ranging from flight to a powerful gunshot. What's more, it is not necessary to access a menu in order to switch from character to character, allowing the player to use whomever they'd like without sacrificing any time. A wide variation in levels is also seen, ranging from outerspace self-scrolling levels, to fast paced platform-based levels inside a large spaceship.

Genisto's movie is an improvement of over 4 and a half minutes over the previous movie. Most of the improvements are due to better accuracy and some tactical changes.

This is a historic movie, submitted and obsoleted before the creation of the database-based (and wiki-based) site engine, before July 2004.

It was inserted to the database in a history revival project by Bisqwit in autumn 2006.

This movie is 1:23.1 faster than the previous movie by Provonost. This movie takes better care in optimization but fires many stray shots. Unlike the previous movie, this one uses the autofire key. In fact it leaves it on for extended perios often, even when there is nothing to shoot at.

This movie takes advantage of the single stream technique, but not until halfway through stage 2.

The few players who have seen this game know that it's an evanescent one. An average speedrun might achieve a time such as 6 minutes. A 5 minute record is an excellent time for speedruns of this game, but requires a lot of luck.
But here we have a movie that is 50% faster than even that! Phil competed intensely with Walker Boh, and this movie is the final result.
At 2006-04-28, a FCEU movie was added to replace the old Famtasia movie. It is 3 frames slower at the beginning, but otherwise identical in content.
The AVI was also replaced with a better quality one, hence, the download statistics were reset. The previous AVI had been downloaded 8018 times.

Lufia 2 is an adventure RPG prequel to Lufia 1. In this installment, Maxim and his cohorts set out to take down the evil Sinistrals.

Normally, the game sports a large amount of puzzles, yet a shockingly low amount of battles. In this movie, however, Genisto uses 2 newly found glitches, explained in the submission text, which let anyone finish the game without even leaving the first room, improving the previous movie by almost 2 minutes.

Circus Charlie is a simple game that most people probably know from pirate multigame carts. The first stages are easy for anyone even on real NES, but stage 3 is already quite challenging.

This movie plays "1 player game A" (easy).

Stage times: 3410, 3560 , 3750 , 3890 , 4270

This version is a hexed version of their previous run and has a strategic use of the select button to have less gray screen at the beginning. The result is a run that is .5 sec shorter but identical in actual gameplay.

This is a two-player timeattack on this game that is said to be quite hard.

Note that the second player dies at some point. This is because of a bug in the game: the beta testers probably never got that far in the game with two players. Thanks to "Cyntalan Maelstrom" for this information.

Graphically this game features some really nice scenes.

This is Genisto's and Phil's joint effort at Castlevania - 26 seconds faster than the previous version by Bisqwit. Also features a higher final score.

This movie uses several techniques for speed:

  • (Ab)using monsters as a platform for shortcuts
  • Optimized usage of weapons
  • Luck abuse for items (Ⅱ and Ⅲ) ― nearly impossible to duplicate
  • (Ab)using the main character as a critical hit weapon at bosses
  • Using bottles to restrain and pass through enemies
And standard optimizations such as not using stairs when jumping is possible.

This game is actually Super Mario USA, the game which was crafted from the Japanese game "Doki Doki Panic".

This is the fastest seen Super Mario Bros 2 timeattack so far. It has been a long road from Bisqwit's first Luigi-only done-fast movie (11:36) to this Genisto's Mario+Luigi+Toad timeattack (12 seconds faster than the previous version by Sleepz), and the result is totally incredible. Have we reached the perfection yet?

This movie also demonstrates many funny glitches in the game - some of which may be documented at the Super Mario Bros. Tricks 2 page.
