Phil Côté's new Castlevania movie ― about 2 seconds faster than the previous version by Phil and Genisto. Also features a higher final score.

Like the precedent movie, this movie uses several techniques for speed:

  • (Ab)using monsters as a platform for shortcuts
  • Optimized usage of weapons
  • Luck abuse for items (Ⅱ and Ⅲ) ― nearly impossible to duplicate
  • (Ab)using the main character as a critical hit weapon at bosses
  • Using bottles to restrain and pass through enemies
And standard optimizations such as not using stairs when jumping is possible.

This TAS is about 13.6 seconds faster than the previous version by the coauthor of this movie, Morrison.

In this joint effort by Phil and Morrison, thorough optimizations are carried out at all levels of magnitude in order to get the maximum completion speed as well as lots of score points in the process.

Legend of Zelda (ゼルダの伝説) is an adventure game that needs no introduction to most NES players.

It is a large game that normally takes days to beat, but at TASvideos, we often reduce games to the minimum necessary in order to complete them.

This is the fifth Legend of Zelda TAS at this site (not counting the second quest movie), and is ~85 seconds faster than the previous movie, due to a completely new route, better strategies and luck manipulation, glitches and some new techniques according to the authors. It took about 1½. years to complete.

This version is really faster than the previous on some levels, but emulator differences (specifically Famtasia's faster loading time) balances out the time.

This is the real Super Mario Bros 2. It was never officially released in the USA and Europe. It was later ported to SNES, and released as "Lost Levels" on Super Mario All-stars. Phil remembers there were pirate copies of this game under the name Super Mario Bros. 3.

Legend of Zelda (ゼルダの伝説) is an adventure game that easily takes you days to beat.
Its world is so huge and full of obscure secrets that without great deal of planning you won't make it in less than many hours.

The previous Zelda movie which was designed together by many masterminds at the Nesvideos forums and played by Sleepz has now been beaten by Phil by 86 seconds because of tactical changes mostly.

The Up+A trick (save and restart) was used in this movie several times. It was judged to be acceptable because it's mentioned in the instruction booklet of the game, and is a part of normal playing.

This video is certainly quite a surprise to anyone who has used hours and hours exploring the Hyrule world. :)

This game is Super Mario Bros, the original, but on Famicom Disk System.
It is much similar to the ROM version of the game, except for one minor difference that is demonstrated here.

The −1 stage is completely different. In the NES and Unisystem versions, the −1 stage repeats infinitely and cannot be completed, but in FDS, it can be completed, and then come −2 and −3.

The −3 stage in FDS is a castle level, and completing it ends the game, even though it says "princess is in another castle". The princess is not seen in the ending, but she is sighted twice in the −1 stage, as shown in this movie.

This is a 43 frame improvement to the previous movie; 42 frames of which were due to a glitch discovered by klmz. For details on this glitch read the submission text of the normal run.

Battletoads (1991) is a futuristic beat-'em-up game that is known for its graphics and extreme difficulty. The story is that the sexy Dark Queen who wants to rule the universe has kidnapped Princess Angelica and a toad named Pimple. Two other toads, Rash and Zitz, attempt to rescue them and defeat the Dark Queen. This single-player attempt uses warps.

Maybe you thought Battletoads was a game full of amphibians, but it is actually full of bugs. Those beta testers really should have spent a little more time on this game...

Donkey Kong is a classic game that has been challenged plenty of times at this site, by many players.

The author of this movie manipulates luck so that Mister Jumpman (who later became Mario) never needs to jump over, wait for, or otherwise evade deadly objects.

Note: Previously, every attempt at this game had been rejected ― either because the movies had been imperfect or just because the game is too simple.
(Isn't it? Even the video codec thinks that it can encode the movie without loss at a mere 251 kbit/s rate.)

But persistence prevailed (take no hint!); the competition between players entailed a movie's publishing. Soon thereafter, it was improved 4 more times. Here's the latest version, made by Phil.

The following other authors should be acknowledged for their contributions:

  • aaa2: the first person who submitted a Donkey Kong movie
  • CoolBumpty: submitted a much better movie
  • OmnipotentEntity: submitted the first movie that was published
  • Arc: submitted movies with improved tactics on levels 2 and 3

Circus Charlie is a simple game that most people probably know from pirate multigame carts. The first stages are easy for anyone even on real NES, but stage 3 is already quite challenging.

This movie plays "1 player game A" (easy).

Stage times: 3410, 3560 , 3750 , 3890 , 4270

This version is a hexed version of their previous run and has a strategic use of the select button to have less gray screen at the beginning. The result is a run that is .5 sec shorter but identical in actual gameplay.

This game has very smooth animation and the characters, including the last boss (which isn't much seen in this version of the movie), look somewhat funny, despite the theme of the game.

The USA version is almost twice as slow as the Japanese version.

The Adventures of Bayou Billy (1989) contains a trinity of genres: beat 'em up (like Streets of Rage), sniping (like part of Golgo 13), and car racing (like Rad Racer). In the game, 'Bayou' Billy West fights his way through Louisiana en route to New Orleans in order to save his kidnapped girlfriend, the luscious Annabelle Lane.

The American version of this game is a lot more difficult than the Japanese one (Mad City), although this video makes it seem easy.

P.S. Check the picture and guess who won the duel ;).

This is a two-player timeattack on this game that is said to be quite hard.

Note that the second player dies at some point. This is because of a bug in the game: the beta testers probably never got that far in the game with two players. Thanks to "Cyntalan Maelstrom" for this information.

Graphically this game features some really nice scenes.

This is Genisto's and Phil's joint effort at Castlevania - 26 seconds faster than the previous version by Bisqwit. Also features a higher final score.

This movie uses several techniques for speed:

  • (Ab)using monsters as a platform for shortcuts
  • Optimized usage of weapons
  • Luck abuse for items (Ⅱ and Ⅲ) ― nearly impossible to duplicate
  • (Ab)using the main character as a critical hit weapon at bosses
  • Using bottles to restrain and pass through enemies
And standard optimizations such as not using stairs when jumping is possible.

That's really hard to do.

This is not a perfect timeattack. To make it perfect would require using the "flying knees" technique almost all the time, and it would be somewhat boring to watch. This movie uses different techniques more.

A new tool-assisted record time at Super Mario Bros. The length is 4:59.92 (17995 frames), from power on to ending the input. Axe is touched at frame number 18012 (5:00.20).
It is 64 frames (1.07 seconds) faster than the previous version.

Selected quotes from the authors:
We sincerely thank Mana for showing us some strategies. It helps us in this version. Also, thanks to Michael Fried, his video inspires me to collect some more points where Mana failed to achieve.

Even in simple-looking games you can always find more time-saving tricks to exploit if you look hard enough. See what we've found at the Super Mario Bros tricks page.

The completion times for each level are:

  • 1-1: 370
  • 1-2: 347
  • 4-1: 341 (fireworks)
  • 4-2: 356
  • 8-1: 200
  • 8-2: 342
  • 8-3: 244
  • 8-4: 316

For extra curiosity, see a slightly edited version (for Famtasia). It introduces the hat-stomping trick in 8-2 and ends the movie properly at hitting the axe.

Super Mario Bros 2 is one of our most competed games. This is Phil's contribution. It improves the previous record by Sleepz by 36 frames (about 0.5 seconds) with minor improvements here and there.

All of the tricks are however the same ― tricks which were invented by various authors, such as Sleepz and Genisto.
