Before reminiscing about a man I knew when I was young, before rescuing a hero named Joe, there were games where you played as Joe himself! The Bionic Commando arcade game, sequel to Commando, introduces the first hero in a platform game who couldn't even jump, which spawned many sequels.

Just when you thought all the early Bionic Commando games were TAS'd and done with, Mukki brings Bionic Commando back to life, as if it were a long dead World War II dictator resurrected by a madman as part of a plan for world domination.

In this game, Mukki demonstrates grappling and kicking ability, whilst avoiding hordes of soldiers futilely attempting to prevent Joe from doing his duty and destroying their weapons of medium sized destruction.

Award - Arcade TAS of 2010
¡Ay, caramba! The Simpsons Arcade Game is Konami's 4-player beat 'em up based on the ultra-hit TV show, The Simpsons. The Simpsons cartoon has now (at the time of writing) spanned 21 seasons, a world-wide movie, and licensing from here to kingdom come. In this TAS, adelikat and DarkKobold use four of the five Simpson family to track down the missing 5th member, Maggie.

All right now, play friendly!

Rome has conquered Gaul and put a wall around the last village of resistance. Asterix and Obelix decide to tour the Roman Empire and collect souvenirs in order to show Caesar the futility of walls. It's hard to get the story from this TAS, however, because they fly through the levels so quickly, absorbing damage and rarely bothering to fight back. They do take some breaks to participate in local sports. After all, if you're trying to send a message to Caesar, why not beat his athletes in one Olympic event--or all of them?

The first quest completion time of this fast paced game got nearly cut as much as 2/3 thanks to Juste's ability to sink into walls when going at very high speed. Please, don't try this at home!

This is a 171-second improvement over zggzdydp's movie. Like in the previous movies, the author picked up an item to display those cool CRITICAL's for entertainment, at the cost of some time.

However, if you still think there is not enough zipping through walls, make sure to see the second quest completed in less than half a minute!

The author tries to complete the game moderately fast, while showing off different things you can do and getting a high score in progress.

Doesn't get hit, except in 2 VS fights where losing is part of the game's plot.

Pokémon Ruby, along with Pokémon Sapphire and Emerald, is part of the third-generation Pokémon games, after Pokémon Gold and Silver. Noticeable differences include the graphics and interface, Pokémon abilities, and the running shoes that allow the player to move around in the outside overworld very fast, before getting the bike.

FractalFusion and GoddessMaria complete this run in a mere 1:31:45, 3 minutes and 22 seconds faster than the previous Pokemon Sapphire run. Instead of using Machop/Machoke, this run now uses Taillow/Swellow, which is obtained far earlier in the game, also has Guts as an ability, and has powerful moves early on and throughout. The movie also uses advanced methods of luck manipulation, with the help of RNG analysis. For more details, see the submission text.

Note: You need to have Real Time Clock on and use Flash 128k as Save Type. Real Time Clock is for sync, while Flash 128k is to prevent the game from giving a white screen.

Yet another Sonic run by nitsuja. This time around the game doesn't allow running faster than the camera can follow. However it does allow team play constantly. Pokémon Gold, and its sister, Pokémon Silver, are of the next generation of Pokémon, after Pokémon Red and Blue.
Among noticeable differences is that the game is now colourful, and that there are over 250 Pokémon instead of around 150.

This movie plays through Pokémon Gold in a fairly fast manner, catching only a half dozen Pokémon in the process, but acquiring all the gym badges, and ultimately beating the protagonist of the earlier generation Pokémon games.

The author of this movie, FractalFusion, has written very extensive details of anything regarding this movie, including even some of the mathematical formulas used by the game. As usual, we recommend reading it.

Invasion of the Zombie Monsters is a B-Movie style platformer for MSX. You take control of Ned, a geek trying to save his girlfriend from a giant demon terrorizing the city. This game was designed to be a throwback to games like Legend of Hero Tonma and Ghouls 'n Ghosts.

This is an improvement of 37.88 seconds over the previous run, courtesy of better boss fights and other general optimisation.

In addition to the standard downloadable encode, there is a second experimental downloadable encode produced in 10-bit YUV444 h.264. You will need a very recent codec / media player (such as LAV Filters, recent builds of FFDShow-tryouts, or mplayer2) to be able to play this experimental encode back.

Super Smash Bros began a series of games that mixes characters from several Nintendo-made games in a unique fighting game. It relies not on wearing down the opponent's "life" but increasing damage until he or she can be literally knocked off the stage. Wildly popular, this game has inspired many lazy days of casual multiplayer gaming but also intense competitive tournaments that happen to this day.

We have seen several submissions for this game here but this is the first one to be published. The author shows off fancy fighting with Yoshi on the hardest difficulty. Rather than the usual goal of speed, this movie aims to be as entertaining as possible in the tradition of all fighting games here.

Another submission by the same author but which is based upon fastest completion time instead, can be watched via emulator movie at its submission page. There are also several other submissions of various quality that can be watched on an emulator.

Arkanoid (1987) strongly resembles the arcade game Breakout (1976). In Arkanoid, the paddle is actually a spaceship, and the bricks are space walls. The goal of the game is to break through the space walls and defeat the villainous Doh in order to escape from the space labyrinth.

This incredible TAS of Arkanoid, made by Baxter, inspires awe in a manner comparable to the Gradius movie. No ball is ever lost, even though three balls are juggled in every level where possible.

Battletoads & Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team is an action packed Beat 'em Up cross over. It features essentially the same physics as Battletoads. Together, these heroes must defeat the Shadow Boss, the Dark Queen, and a whole assortment of other baddies.

Unlike the run of the SNES version this obsoletes, the author, feos, uses both a Toad and a Dragon. In addition, he constantly exploits glitches removed in the SNES version. A rare instance of a Japanese-made NES game based on a U.S.-originated comic book, Bucky O'Hare (1992) provides a player with a good combination of platforming action similar to Mega Man, an interesting plot, and convincing production values. You can play as one of the five unique characters, which you are free to select at any time, after saving them from the clutches of the Toad Empire. Each character has special abilities required to take advantage of in order to pass through the game's numerous variably designed stages, ranging from single-screen puzzle rooms to autoscrolling shoot-'em-ups.

Interesting fact about this game is that Konami used to implement unconventional ways of piracy protection, in this particular case by making each hit or an otheriwise harmful collision in the game result in an instant death if you play it illegitimately. Apparently, this was how a large amount of people were used to playing it in pre-emulation era, without ever finding out Konami's little sabotage.

This movie by AnS is set up in a fashion that imitates this handicap by playing the game in hard mode (accessing it through a password), where every hit results in death. Other than that, it also improves the previous movie by 2 minutes 48.7 seconds, using several major glitches and a lot of small tricks explained in great detail in the author's comments.

In this run, adelikat picks up maximum speed upgrades and has fun with perfect reflexes, much like the previous movie. That is certainly something nice to do, because the game scrolls automatically and the player cannot affect the speed. However, the point of this movie is not just to beat this game as fast as possible, but rather to do all kinds of unpredictable and awe-inspiring things rarely seen in any TAS — without losing time. See for yourself.

This is probably one of the best illustrations on how to create art out of a simplistic and otherwise uninteresting game to watch.

What is also different about this movie is an extra warp which significantly shortens the game, and the use of a new tool (input macro) as described in the submission text. Bots are occasionally used to generate pseudorandom input while still avoiding death.

Also be sure to check out this movie being played back on an actual NES.

Hammerin' Harry is a pretty simple platformer. Armed with a big hammer, you make your way through 5 levels, and the first 3 levels have bonus levels as well. At the end of each level there is a boss, and in some levels, there are also mini-bosses. In short, this game is a "normal" platformer, you won't have a hard time figuring out what's going on.

High Speed was released on the NES by Rare Inc. in 1991 and is based on a real pinball machine released by Williams pinball in 1985. The core rules of High Speed were ported over fairly faithfully from the original pinball machine although Rare added in two different minigames and a "wizard mode" goal which is reached by completing a total of 8 cannon minigames and 6 race minigames.

Completing all three races and all four cannon minigames causes a spaceship to appear which displays a message that states "you have beaten the system... for now”; beating another round of three races and four cannon minigames causes a rocket to appear which states “you have beaten the system this time.” and marks the end of the game. Reaching this final “you beat the system” bonus is the goal of this speedrun.

Delivering pizza is not normally a job one would consider dangerous. This is not always the case, as this game proves; here our protagonist is called upon to deliver pizza to such odd locations as a construction site and a haunted house, all the while dodging enemies apparently intent on claiming the pizza for themselves.

If you were hoping for free pizza from slow delivery, look somewhere else; the author succeeds in deliveries so quickly you'll think the guy was there before people even placed their order.

Gods is a game about someone who wants to become a god and gain immortality. This is a delicate and paradoxical issue, because temporal immortality can be bought at just about every shop in this game, but the hero still dies numerous times.

Another fun aspect is bomb-jumping, which allows both higher jumps and traveling vertically through walls. Almost the whole 2nd half of the game is skipped with this trick!

This is the author's latest version, improved by another 132 frames.

Gunstar Heroes (1993) is widely considered to be one of the best action games on the Sega Genesis, but, ironically, was commercially unsuccessful due to poor promotion. It features a variety of melee attacks, as well as 4 basic weapons which can be combined in pairs (making a total of 14 combinations) — all densely packed in a swift and explosion-heavy gameplay spanning over seven uniquely designed stages. The author takes special care to showcase all the moves the game is capable of, using every possible attack and having lots of fun playing around in autoscrolling sections.

This movie is 3 minutes longer than the previous one due to playing on hardest difficulty and using both Gunstars at the same time. See the author's comments for more details.

The AVI for this movie is also slightly larger than usual — this is due to an amount of colors and on-screen motion even the best codecs have problems coping with.

Kid Chameleon is the story of a kid trapped in an arcade machine, where he has to traverse many different kinds of levels from different "games" and can transform into many types of characters. It is rather convoluted, with the ability to take many paths to the last level.

Instead of taking the fastest path, this movie takes the longest path possible without backtracking, but does so as quickly as possible. Several new tricks originated in this run that only recently found their way into the any%.

Ristar is a large, colorful game with good music. It also has water-themed levels that aren't slow and boring, which is a true rarity.

The author of this TAS chose to get maximum height bonuses instead of using the end pole for a small, boring speed boost.

As Bag of Magic Food so excellently put it, "Starface has stretchy arms and wastes time spinning on poles."

This is a 1 minute 33 second improvement over the author's previous movie. Details about the improvements can be found in the authors comments.

In this run of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic has decided that getting all the emeralds is the only way to go and as such powers his way through the special stages to achieve this (and a perfect ending). This run also avoids using a glitch called horizontal underflow, which is explained in the author's comments.

For those that have seen the Knuckles 100% run (or just don't like waiting around), there is a second, smaller mkv that omits the emerald collection, loading/end of stage screens and removes the Hyper Sonic flash/music.

Fast bouncing around. This is a run of Sonic the Hedgehog which avoids zipping (gaining a large speed boost from being inside terrain), unlike the other run of the game. Therefore, most levels cannot be skipped, and instead have to be traversed using a more normal route, although the author still finds a couple of alternative methods to take shortcuts (it is hard to define hard rules to ban all glitches). In this run, the game is completed without collecting the Chaos Emeralds.

A typical streetfighting game which spawned the popular Streets of Rage trilogy. This is our first Sega Saturn published movie, and yet again Symphony of the Night has the honor to open another game section. arukAdo uses Maria, a Sega Saturn exclusive playable character, to blaze through the castle, proving that she's just not another damsel in distress. The author uses a combination of magic powers, kicks, glitches and luck manipulation to free the world, yet again, from Dracula's minions.

Castlevania - Nocturne In The Moonlight is the Japanese name for Symphony of the Night. The Sega Saturn version was released only in Japan.

Like most games in Castlevania series, Symphony of the Night has different possible endings. To achieve the best ending, one must explore at least 1847 rooms which is normally a huge time consuming task. While traveling through all those rooms, the author also acquires all of the relics, making this an "all relics and best ending" run.

During the exploring, the player can unlock different abilities for Alucard which make him able to reach new areas. Some of these abilities are used to gain a tremendous speed and glitch through routes which players could not have even dreamed in 1997.

Also, the author takes an intentional death to make Jar Jar Binks disappear at one point in the run. I'm sure everyone has wished they could die and make Jar Jar disappear, at least once.

Pokémon: Blue Version is part of the first generation of games within its famous series, known for having a very large number of beneficial glitches. In fact, the game can be completed in less than one minute of in-game time by save data corruption as evidenced in the run of the Yellow Version, and it can be completed in under an hour using a similar, yet more 'conventional' glitch, as shown by the run of the Red Version. These runs break the game, and avoid much of the gameplay intended by the developers.

And now, for something completely different. In this run, the authors, p4wn3r and Mukki, catch all 151 Pokémon and complete the game while only using what they call "light glitches", showing off much more of the game than in the other runs while still using many glitches to complete this goal much faster than the programmers could have imagined. For more details about the techniques used in this run, and for their definition of what constitutes a light glitch, as always, please read the authors' notes.

Donkey Kong's been kidnapped and old Cranky Kong insists that Diddy collect a bunch of coins that say "DK" on them. These goals are sufficiently compatible that Diddy and Dixie decide to get a little bit sidetracked on their rescue plan.

The main improvement in this movie comes from using Hard Mode. That means there are no DK Barrels lying around the stages. Also, whenever you start a level or sucessfully complete a bonus, you'll have both Kongs, which allows for more places to sacrifice a Kong and save time. By playing in this mode, 53.71 seconds were saved compared to its predecessor.

Note: this run was made using the input of the old movie from Comicalflop and NxCy, and improvements were spliced in by Dooty.

Killer Instinct is a classic fighting game ported to SNES from an arcade machine. It features an advanced combo system, rich pre-rendered graphics and nicely arranged music. However, the latter two were somewhat toned down in this version compared to the original.

In this movie, Spinal takes down his enemies by slicing them up, hitting them with their own abilities, and (gasp!) making them dance to music!

Lemmings! This is a SNES translation of the well known and popular game.

This TAS, played by Lord Tom, completes the game on the Mayhem difficulty level. We recommend reading the author's level-by-level comments which explain some of the strategies used in the levels.

The category "takes damage to save time" was flagged because some of the lemmings were sacrificed for overall best completion time (in some levels, it is even necessary).

Like all of the Mortal Kombat games, MKII is about warriors fighting in a tournament for inspecific power and fame. Shang Tsung is chosen for his ability to transform into other characters.

This movie aims to demonstrate as many quirks and fatalities of the game as possible. Examples include two Shang Tsungs with a Raiden child, a headless Reptile eating Kitana's head and a bloody clone of Jax. The AI is also humiliated.

The author's comments page is a definitely recommended reading for this movie.

Note: The movie contains semi-realistic violence to be expected with the Mortal Kombat series.

This game is practically a mix of Contra and Strider. As always, aliens have taken over Earth, and only genetically enhanced humans can stop them.

This movie is 1 minute and 17 seconds faster than the previous movie.

Seiken Densetsu 3 is a RPG about your typical ragtag group of young adventurers that totally lack any survival instinct; at least that'd explain why they never bother to get any protective gear. Our three chosen champions of goodness are tasked with rescuing the eight elemental spirits from the clutches of evil and using their power to save the world. Though it turns out that nobody is able to count as we find in fact nine spirits...

The provided MP4s feature subtitles, allowing those of us who don't speak Japanese to figure out what's going on. We also recommend reading the author's notes; they contain a lot of very good information.

This is the 10th movie publication of Super Mario World. Of its nine previous movies, none had obsoleted its predecessor by more than 15 seconds. This movie sets a new record by beating the previous movie by 22.68 seconds and clocking in under 10 minutes. Ironically, Mario dies in the process.

The authors of this movie have found (more) new glitches to save time. The notable differences in gameplay are:

  • Plays a level which was not previously played (Yoshi's Island 1)
  • Skips Iggy's Castle
  • Optimized Bowser fight
It is recommended to read the author's comments to understand how the new glitches are used in this movie.

Super Mario World 2 - Yoshi's Island is a vibrant, colorful and fun game that stars the popular Yoshi. From a technical standpoint, the game is very exceptional on the SNES due to its use of the SuperFX chip. The chip allows for many cool special effects that are otherwise impossible on the SNES.

This run is an improvement of over 5 minutes to the previous speedrun of this game. For more details, we recommend reading the author's comments; there's a lot more to this movie than meets the eye, even though the movie is very colourful, action-packed, and full of entertaining tricks and maneuvers. In other words, this game is the very essence we tool-assisted speedrun movie makers enjoy. :)

If you want even more Yoshi craziness, be sure to check out the warped completion.

Super R•Type (1991) is the 4th game of the classic R•Type series of arcade shooters, whose distinct gameplay and level design inspired numerous developers to create clones and various look-alikes. However, this particular installment isn't considered canon, and is in fact an SNES-exclusive semi-port of the first two R•Type games combined in one.

In a nutshell, the series' plot is about the evil Bydo empire, which is a highly developed alien lifeform with hivemind mentality (Borg, Zerg, etc.). The player pilots a spacecraft on a mission to destroy it. The craft itself has a force — an indestructible (yet living!) orb pod that can be used for both bullet absorption and offensive action. The core gameplay thus boils down to two things: memorization (all R•Type games are very unforgiving, and require the player to learn the paths thoroughly to succeed) and tactical use of the force orb to protect the ship and do high damage to enemies.

The author of this TAS, however, opted for playing around with enemies and killing most of them with the force orb. Don't try this in realtime. (Really, don't.)
Other than that, the movie uses a password to access the second loop's difficulty level ("PRO") without having to beat the game twice. It still doesn't get the good ending, though.

A quick playthrough with Zangief.

This movie focuses more on pulling off crazy combos and showcasing Zangief's big repertoire of throws than beating every opponent as fast as possible, since that would just lead to the same few combos being used over and over.

Umihara Kawase (海腹川背) is about a schoolgirl with a bag of holding and a rubber fishing line setting out to rid the world of giant mutant fish.

This video plays the longest path of the game having only two bosses, aka. Bob's path, which you can find at the Field Map page.

The Umihara Kawase page has more information about this game.

The boss levels are quite long in this movie ― they can't really be sped up, but the author of the movie has done his best to make it worth watching.

No frogs were harmed in the making of this movie.
