Commander Keen 5: The Armageddon Machine (1991) is a part of the popular Commander Keen saga, developed by id Software. It is a direct continuation of the previous episode, in which Keen has learned from the Oracle of Gnosticus IV that the evil Shikadi plan to blow up the galaxy with their doomsday device, the Omegamatic (It slices! It dices! It causes a 100,000 light year-diameter quantum explosion!). Naturally, he sets out to sabotage the machine and stop the Shikadi.

Using a series of glitches, Keen completes only four stages to get to the end game, only one of which takes any significant length of time, and destroys the Quantum Explosion Dynamo, the core of the Omegamatic in the impossibly short time of 2:42. In the process, he manages to inadvertently prevent the Shikadi from accomplishing their escape (though you have to watch the ending very closely to figure out that this has happened here).

Although this is not the first submitted DOS movie, it has the distinction of being the first to be published, thanks to use of the recently approved emulator JPC-RR.

This is a TAS of the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2, a.k.a. 'The Lost Levels', using a suboptimal punk called 'Luigi'. He jumps higher than Mario, but acts slower in many ways. However, the movie is in no way worse than the Mario version - some new creative solutions have been found.

This is an 85 frame improvement over the previous movie by Deign.

Mario has eaten too many poisonous mushrooms and as a result, decided to go on a furious killing spree. In this berserker state he has also gained the new secret ability to walk through walls at will.

Wondering how some tricks work? Information is available at Super Mario Bros. Tricks page.

This movie is 1.68 seconds faster than the previous version due to new routes in 1-1 and 1-2.

This is the real Super Mario Bros 2. It was never officially released in the USA and Europe. It was later ported to SNES, and released as "Lost Levels" on Super Mario All-stars.

FDS means Famicom Disk System. It was a Japanese disk-unit version of the NES.

In addition to the standard encode, there is an experimental encode produced in 10-bit YUV444 h.264, providing higher visual quality. You will need a very recent codec / media player (such as LAV Filters or mplayer2) to be able to play this experimental encode back. Feedback on this encode would be appreciated - please use the discussion thread for this movie for that purpose.

The glitched Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow main quest TAS has become even more glitched. Using an obscure out-of-room travel technique involving in-game saving and subsequent dying, klmz ploughs through the game with confident pace of a cold-blooded killing machine in a little under seven minutes — a whole 31.72 seconds faster than the previous movie by the same author!

We recommend reading the author's comments for more information on the death warp glitch and other time-saving techniques used to make this improvement happen.

If you would like to see more of the game, we also have a "100% souls" Aria of Sorrow movie by Kriole here.

Everyone who has at least once attempted to gather a soul from each of the 120 different enemies in Aria of Sorrow, especially during a speedrun, knows the frustration it incurs after a hundredth failed attempt to get the required drop. That just makes this all-souls TAS, in which the player beats the game on hard mode and without using glitch warps in a little less than 25 minutes, even more impressive.

Upon completing his warpless run, Kriole decided to take another jab at this category, improving upon his earlier effort by 51 seconds.

However, if you would like to see the game beaten to a pulp in a mere quarter of this time, don't miss the glitched run by klmz.

Note: While the player doesn't use glitch warps (neither by death nor by getting out-of-bounds using transform souls), he uses the normal warp rooms present in the castle.

Note: Starting from reset was necessary to use hard mode. However, doing so is normally not allowed — refer to the rules to see the reasons.

Nathan Graves is a vampire hunter trying to save his master, Morris, from the clutches of Dracula. Normally this would require collecting lots of different items as well as hours of leveling, but Cardboard proves collectible cards passé by gathering almost none of the cards required for spells and blazing through the game at warp speed without regard to levels or his own safety.

In this game, the player controls Juste Belmont, one of the later descendants of the Belmont clan. The goal of the game, as usual for Castlevania games, is to defeat Dracula in his castle. Along the way, some bosses are beaten, and some abilities and items are obtained. Furthermore, to obtain the best ending, Juste is supposed to acquire all of Dracula's remains and Maxim's bracelet.

This run collects all of the pieces of furniture, which causes a certain room in the castle to become heavily decorated. This run uses wall-sinking glitches to warp very quickly between different parts of the castle, but it still explores a large portion of the castle. For another run featuring Juste which uses wall-sinking and ignores the castle decorations, please see this run.

We also have movies featuring the unlockable character Maxim, with wall-sinking or without.

Then he beats the game in less than a minute (in-game time) - without ever leaving his own room, bypassing Professor Oak's speech by walking through a television, bumping into a wall, and having the game inform him about 1 error.

Final Fantasy Adventure is the first game of the Seiken Densetsu (聖剣伝説) series but it does contains some classic Final Fantasy elements. The series is probably best known for the SNES game Secret of Mana. This game was later remade on the Gameboy Advance as Sword of Mana. Gameplay is quite similar to a Zelda game, however there is level building.

In this run, Touch-me demonstrates how to flawlessly beat the game. What's unusual is that he also uses some glitches to completely skip parts in the game.

Dawn of Sorrow (2005), the first installment of Castlevania on Nintendo DS, is a direct sequel to GBA hit Aria of Sorrow. Everyone is trying to kill our hero Soma Cruz, since in the previous game he absorbed all of Dracula's attributes. You can always trust weird cults to try and bring about the end of the world by unleashing this power.

This short glitched movie beats the game in a mere 8 minutes and 20 seconds. It is achieved by collecting souls and setting important flags just by zipping around the castle, allowing the player to complete it without even seeing the last boss.

The second Castlevania title released on Nintendo DS after Dawn of Sorrow, this game is a direct sequel to BloodLines on Sega Genesis. Dracula rises from the dead yet again (cue groan), and it's up to Jonathan Morris, helped out by Charlotte Aulin, a powerful mage student, to defeat him.

This run saves 5:21.21 over the previous run (more than half its length!). First of all, the run uses a previously proposed alternate route. This route would be longer, except that there is also a glitch used which allows attacks to hit more often than they should, and this glitch makes the new route viable. Lastly, there are also faster movement methods used. As a result, you will (un)fortunately hear a lot less of Jonasan! Sharotto! Jonasan! Sharotto! Jonasan! Sharotto! in this version.

The story is that the sexy Dark Queen who wants to rule the universe has kidnapped Princess Angelica and a toad named Pimple. Two other toads, Rash and Zitz, attempt to rescue them and defeat the Dark Queen. This two-player attempt uses warps.

Maybe you thought Battletoads was a game full of amphibians, but it is actually full of bugs. Those beta testers really should have spent a little more time on this game...

In this run, feos and MESHUGGAH, beat the previously fastest TAS of this game by 2:22.16, this time using 2 players instead of 1. You will laugh, you will cry, but most of all, you will wonder how in the world they broke this game so much. Do yourself a favor and read the authors' notes.

If science fiction is to be believed, the ultimate evolution for biological beings is to discard the physical body and become an entity of pure energy. For video game characters, it seems to be the ability to zip through walls. In this latest TAS by zggzdydp, Simon Belmont joins the league of characters possessing this ability.

Castlevania II: Simon's Quest is the story of Simon's horrible weekend without sleep. Two years after defeating Dracula, the hero is physically weakened by Dracula's curse. He must gather Dracula's remains and incinerate them at the ruins of Castlevania in order to end the curse.

This movie is 2 minutes and 23 seconds faster than the previous effort by the same author. We recommend to read his comments for explanations on how this improvement was achieved.

In this run, adelikat picks up maximum speed upgrades and has fun with perfect reflexes, much like the previous movie. That is certainly something nice to do, because the game scrolls automatically and the player cannot affect the speed. However, the point of this movie is not just to beat this game as fast as possible, but rather to do all kinds of unpredictable and awe-inspiring things rarely seen in any TAS — without losing time. See for yourself.

This is probably one of the best illustrations on how to create art out of a simplistic and otherwise uninteresting game to watch.

What is also different about this movie is an extra warp which significantly shortens the game, and the use of a new tool (input macro) as described in the submission text. Bots are occasionally used to generate pseudorandom input while still avoiding death.

Also be sure to check out this movie being played back on an actual NES.

Mighty Bomb Jack is a game where Jack goes to rescue his family from a pyramid. Along the way, he meets many enemies who start as mummies and change forms when they hit the ground. He also finds bomb-filled rooms at the end of each round, which work like warp rooms with a twist: you can warp ahead to the bomb room of the next round if the first lit bomb is the last bomb collected. Using this, the author warps past many rounds.

However, this movie aims for the best ending, which is obtained by freeing all the family members in Round 12. This means that the author avoids warping past some rounds in order to collect items. For more details, read the submission comments.

Rygar is an action game involving a hero with a shield as a weapon. Normally, the hero must obtain items, such as a grappling hook, to be able to explore the world of Garloz, and he must also defeat five bosses to gain access to the final area. However, these requirements can be circumvented with glitches. Indeed, this run kills no bosses except the final boss and does very little leveling.

In contrast to the any% run and the warpless run, which use the European version of Rygar, this movie uses the American version. The two ROM versions have some different glitches. Solar Jetman is a space adventure game where the main excitement comes from the physics of the game.

In the game, you explore planets with a small module you fly around, towing fuel tanks and other artifacts back to the mother ship, often from planets with a ridiculous level of gravity and narrow hazardous caverns. Anyone who has played this game surely knows how difficult it can be, while being entertaining for hours after hours.

There are a few different modules to fly, and even a password option, but none of these were used in this movie.

This movie completes the game through a few secret warps, extensive usage of the afterburner, many reckless maneuvers and a few timebombs, now about 1 minute faster than the previous author's movie.

The author here proves that Nintendo has been making the same game over and over again by playing all four Super Mario Bros. games with the same input.

While the main focus is to complete Super Mario Bros. 3 as fast as possible, Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels and Super Mario Bros. 2 were completed around the same time as Super Mario Bros. 3. Super Mario Bros. 1 finished quite a bit earlier, on the other hand.

Transformers - Convoy no Nazo (トランスフォーマー コンボイの謎) is about the Autobot Ultra Magnus cruising a very frustrating and difficult journey to discover who killed Optimus Prime. No, I'm serious.

Yo! Noid is a game centered around a short man in a rabbit suit making his way through New York City to defeat an identical man in a different color rabbit suit for a pizza reward. The game was conceived as part of a 1980s advertising campaign for Domino's Pizza. As anyone who has played the game knows, the game is quite difficult, since the controls are sluggish, one hit kills you, and the pizza bonus games at the end can be difficult to win if you don't pick up enough useful powerups.

With some movement glitches, warps, and luck manipulation, FODA beats this game very quickly. Not only that, to make the run even harder and more impressive, he doesn't kill any enemies.

Zanac is one of those space shooter games in which you are trying to save the earth.

Due to the highly repetitive nature of this game, the hidden 9th input button (the console's Reset button) is used to enable stage select to warp to the final (12th) level. This results in an unusually long gray screen at the start of the movie. Starting on the final level with 3 lives and only the initial pea-shooter for a weapon normally makes the game near impossible to win.

The author takes advantage of frame perfect timing to upgrade rapid fire to the maximum in a single level; this allows for an improvement of 3 seconds during the boss fight.

Earthworm Jim is the unlikely story of an earthworm who finds a suit with super powers and goes on a rampage to protect Earth and his puppy Peter(?). The game follows the absurd spirit of the story: for example, the suit can use Jim for a whip, there is a boss who attacks by vomiting fish, you fight lawyers in hell, and in one level, you swing on bungee cords made out of snot.

This movie improves the first run of this game, which was done on the Genesis version, by 16.94 seconds. However, the actual improvement is much larger since the Special Edition contains additional levels that are also played through in this TAS.

This movie here is one that makes little to no sense to someone who isn't familiar with the game. The main character can move very fast and the dark graphics don't help in figuring out what's going on. There is a lot more going on in this movie than meets the eye. For example, the player uses a secret warp involving combining the alchemy potions that are scattered throughout the levels.

This improves the previous run of the game by 5 minutes & 30 seconds through several optimizations as well as a new glitch which creates massive shortcuts.

For more information about what's going on in this game, we recommend reading the author's comments at the submission page.

Based on the manga Fist of the North Star (北斗の拳, hokuto no ken), this game basically has an angry guy trying to find his girl. Since he is so awesome, he makes people explode just by touching them.

Though, he also thinks it's faster to simply do a flying kick over entire levels.

TODO: Put a Chuck Norris reference in somewhere, and get an editor to write a description that's actually good.

Like most games in Castlevania series, Symphony of the Night has different possible endings. To achieve the best ending, one must explore at least 1847 rooms which is normally a huge time consuming task. While traveling through all those rooms, the author also acquires all of the relics, making this an "all relics and best ending" run.

During the exploring, the player can unlock different abilities for Alucard which make him able to reach new areas. Some of these abilities are used to gain a tremendous speed and glitch through routes which players could not have even dreamed in 1997.

Jedi Power Battles is Star-Wars-meets-Double-Dragon with a ton of crazy platforming. The author uses Obi-wan to run through all of Star Wars Episode I, ignoring tons of battle droids and droidekas to get to the final confrontation with Darth Maul. Look for a tribute to SW:EP1 in the final battle!

Also, the author takes an intentional death to make Jar Jar Binks disappear at one point in the run. I'm sure everyone has wished they could die and make Jar Jar disappear, at least once.

Mole Mania, known as Moguranya (モグラ~ニャ) in Japan, is an action puzzle game. The main character is a mole named Muddy Mole, whose wife and children have been kidnapped by the farmer, Jinbe. Muddy has to go to Jinbe Land and save his family. In the game, the player will solve puzzles by moving a black ball to a gate. However, there are many obstacles and enemies in the way. Therefore the player will dig into ground to find ways around them.

This run aims to beat all levels as fast as possible without using surrender. To accomplish this, the author, Ryuto, uses a warp glitch to skip many rooms. As always, please see the author's notes for more details.

There is also a run by the same author that skips several levels.

This game (along with Pocket Monsters: Red) is the Japanese version of the first generation of Pokémon games and the first ever Pokémon game.

This run, a ten frame improvement over the previous version, abuses a glitch that was fixed in later releases of Pocket Monsters (Pokémon) that allows a player to warp freely through the world. Victory is achieved in a matter of minutes with this route. Normally, the game takes well over an hour at the fastest to finish.

To see a more substantial run of the first generation of Pokémon, watch this movie. For a less substantial run (which also demonstrates that they didn't fix all the glitches in later versions), watch this one.

Note: This movie requires VBA rerecording v20, as it does not sync on any other version.

Pokémon Red is part of the first generation of games within its famous series, known for having a very large number of beneficial glitches. In fact, the game can be completed in less than one minute of in-game time by save data corruption as evidenced in the run of the Yellow Version, but that is not used here in favour of activating a similar glitch through more conventional means - if systematic breaking of the game can be called conventional.

This is an improvement of 37:56.40 over the previous run of Blue in this category. The previous run used entirely different glitches and is worth checking out as well.

It is recommended that you read the author's comments as well as the discussion relating to the movie to fully enjoy it.

Note: This movie requires VBA rerecording 19. The glitches work differently on other versions of VBA.

One of the best (and best known) shooters of the 16-bit era, Contra 3 forgoes any semblence of plot devices in favor of good old fashioned shooting and platforming with some tough as nails bosses, especially in this, the hardest mode.

Apparently not happy with an already amazing movie, Cpadolf felt the need to go on yet another black op, optimizing his distortions of space and time on the way to a 173 frame improvement.

This movie uses a 'warping' glitch to complete the game. There is also the 2-player version which does not.

Donkey Kong's been kidnapped and old Cranky Kong insists that Diddy collect a bunch of coins that say "DK" on them. These goals are sufficiently compatible that Diddy and Dixie decide to get a little bit sidetracked on their rescue plan.

The main improvement in this movie comes from using Hard Mode. That means there are no DK Barrels lying around the stages. Also, whenever you start a level or sucessfully complete a bonus, you'll have both Kongs, which allows for more places to sacrifice a Kong and save time. By playing in this mode, 53.71 seconds were saved compared to its predecessor.

Note: this run was made using the input of the old movie from Comicalflop and NxCy, and improvements were spliced in by Dooty.

EarthBound, also known as Mother 2, is a great RPG, designed by Shigesato Itoi in 1994-1995. It is best described as "random," but in a good way. This hack of Super Mario World contains a Star World which contains themed levels that connect to various locations on the map. Like the original Super Mario World, these levels can be used as a makeshift warp zone. This movie demonstrates this path - navigating the Star World to charge straight to Bowser, leaving much of the game untouched.

This movie is 19.03 seconds shorter than the previous movie primarily as a result of the new Pokey Stun Glitch, which almost completely bypasses Desert Star World. See the author's comments for more details.

Kato-chan Ken-chan is a gem of a PCE game made by Hudson. Often abbreviated as "Kato-Ken" in Japan, this game is derived from a Japanese TV program, "Kato-chan Ken-chan gokigen TV". The main characters are Cha Kato (Kato-chan) and Ken Shimura (Ken-chan), who are famous Japanese comedians. One particularly distinguishing feature of the game is the ability to attack enemies with farts!

In this run, the author uses Ken-chan, though you will also see Kato-chan appear from time to time to be a nuisance to Ken-chan.

Please read the welcome page if you haven't already done so. It explains the rules and methods that apply to all of these movies, particularly the use of savestates and frame advance. Also refer to our Glossary to understand terms we use, such as TAS or other unfamiliar terms.
