Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (2005), the first installment of Castlevania on Nintendo DS, is a direct sequel to GBA hit Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow.

Like its predecessor, after finishing the game, you can choose to ignore pretty-boy Soma Cruz and instead play as Julius Belmont. Unfortunately, it seems that Julius's skills have waned a bit since his last appearance. Yoko Belnades and Alucard easily pick up the slack, though.

This run avoids the use of large-skip glitches that can be seen in our other run of Julius in Dawn of Sorrow, showing off more of the game.

Award - Lucky TAS of 2012
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (2005), the first installment of Castlevania on the Nintendo DS, is a direct sequel to GBA hit Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. In it, Soma Cruz continues to cultivate his unhealthy obsession with collecting the souls of his enemies.

Using the powers that only tool assistance can provide, every single possible soul is collected in a bit over 35 minutes. If you've ever played the game, you know what a pain those souls can be.

There are also runs that complete the game as fast as possible with Soma, with Julius, and with Julius while staying in bounds.

In this run of the third Game Boy Advance entry of the Castlevania series, the author neither uses major warp glitches nor collects 100% of the souls, but still manages to beat the game in just over 20 minutes - almost 7 minutes faster than the previous run.

Nathan Graves is a vampire hunter trying to save his master, Morris, from the clutches of Dracula. Normally this would require collecting lots of different items as well as hours of leveling, but Cardboard proves collectible cards passé by gathering almost none of the cards required for spells and blazing through the game at warp speed without regard to levels or his own safety.

This movie is a 10.5 second improvement over the author's previous movie through various small & thorough optimizations.

Pokémon Gold and Silver form the second generation of Pokémon, after Pokémon Red and Blue. The main differences between the generations is that the game is now in full color, and that there are 250 Pokémon instead of 151.

This movie plays through Pokémon Gold in a fairly fast manner, catching only a half dozen Pokémon in the process, but acquiring all the gym badges, and ultimately beating the protagonist of the previous generation of Pokémon games.

Rockman DX3, also known as Zook Hero 2, is an an unlicensed pirate game developed by Vast Fame that rips gameplay off the Rockman X series. Just like Rockman X, there are eight stages, and six of them contain a boss who gives you his weapon upon defeat. The protagonist, Zook, also has abilities nearly identical to those of X. Despite these similarities, the code and graphics appear to be completely original and the music is actually decent.

Unlike the other run of this game, this run uses a release that doesn't have all stages unlocked from the start, which means all bosses must be defeated and all upgrades obtained first before Zook can tackle the final stages.

Award - Gameboy TAS of 2010
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX is an updated version of an older GB game which adds color, an additional dungeon, various other minor features, and a lot of bug fixes. Link, after rescuing Hyrule (again?), sets off on a journey and subsequently shipwrecks on the mysterious Koholint Island, which has been overtaken by evil monsters which he must defeat in order to find a way back home.

Through a wide variety of glitches and general optimizations, this is now almost ten minutes faster than the previous full run of this game.

This run does not make use of a form of warp glitching, but still demonstrates that they obviously didn't fix as many bugs as they thought.

Final Fantasy Adventure is the first game in the Seiken Densetsu (聖剣伝説) series, a series best known for the Super Nintendo game Secret of Mana. It plays similarly to The Legend of Zelda, with some Final Fantasy elements added.

This run by Atomnium forgoes warps so as to show off more of the game. It also improves upon the previous run by 13.46 seconds thanks to improved manipulation and strategies.

Metroid II: Return of Samus is the second game in the Metroid series, taking place immediately after the events of the NES Metroid. Samus arrives at the planet SR388 to exterminate all metroids and eventually succeeds.

This movie by Cardboard puts the Spring Ball and Spider Ball to great use to compensate for the lack of items, and achieves victory in the shortest time possible.

This is a 69 second improvement over the author's previous movie. The in-game time is 43 minutes.

This is Metroid II: Return of Samus completed with all the items collected. Being truthful to the original Metroid values, the game holds many items cleverly hidden, so finding all of them is not an easy task.

That being said, Metroid II doesn't keep track of the collected items' percentage. Moreover, the game has two excessive Energy tanks and an additional copy of each beam. It's been agreed that the author should take all the E-tanks, and at least one copy of each beam. However, due to the apparent linearity of this game, collecting so many additional items doesn't make the movie dramatically slower.

This movie is nearly 6 minutes faster than Alter's previous movie due to better precision, faster Metroid fights, and missile planning.

This is the second and last true Mario game for the original Game Boy. It has unique power ups like carrots and bubbles and allows the player to go through each of the worlds in any order. It also features the first appearance of Wario, who would become a staple character for Nintendo.
This is a massive 2 minute and 40 second improvement over the previous movie. The improvements in this movie were largely due to two new tricks: the pixel trick and the pipe glitch. Both saved enormous amounts of time during the run. Details on the improvements can be found in the author's submission text.

Originally meant as a sequel to the Super Mario Land games, Wario Land eventually proved popular enough in its own right to launch its own series.

Wario, having been kicked out of Mario's castle in his first appearance, decides, in his eternal greed, to search for a statue stolen by the nefarious Captain Syrup and the Black Sugar Gang. This would normally involve questing for hidden treasures and collecting as many coins as he can possibly amass along the way.

Here, however, Wario decides this isn't worth his time and proceeds as quickly as possible towards the final confrontation — going so far as to skip entire levels and otherwise make a mockery of the game engine.

This movie is a 2:11.01 improvement over the previous movie through better optimization.

Luigi wins a mansion in a contest and his brother, Mario, goes missing there. It is your goal to search the haunted mansion to figure out where he is. Your weapons to protect you are a flashlight and the Poltergust 3000, a ghost vacuum. Capturing ghosts and collecting keys helps you progress in your quest to find Mario.

The author, Malleoz, forgoes out-of-bounds glitches that are present in this movie and plays through the game in a regular way in record time.

This run plays the Hidden Mansion, a mode unlocked after beating the game once that increases the power of the Poltergust and allows skipping some cutscenes, to make the run more entertaining. We do not normally accept runs that start from dirty SRAM; see the rules for more details.

Backwards Long Jump (BLJ) is a game breaking glitch not used in this Super Mario 64 run so that the runners can show off a variety of other lesser known glitches. Despite BLJ being banned, Mario shows that he can still collect 70 stars with ninja-like reflexes.

BLJ can be seen in the 0 Stars and 120 Stars runs.

In this TAS of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the author aims to beat the game as quickly as possible while completing all dungeons, temples, and Ganon Trials. This goal is commonly referred to as "all temples", "all dungeons", or "MST (Medallions/Stones/Trials)".

This run has 22:15.68 minutes of improvements in gameplay over the previous TAS of its kind.

This movie contains a newer route and newer strategies which allow for a much faster completion than were possible when the last run was made. Several large glitches in the game are not used in the run, such as the Reverse Bottle Adventure or the Get Item Manipulation glitch. These are avoided because it would make the completion of any dungeon completely arbitrary; they can be seen in an old any% run.

This TAS is played on the Japanese version of the game. The reason for this is that the text is significantly faster than in the English version, which means that far less time (roughly 12 minutes) is spent waiting for text boxes and cut scenes to end before getting back to the action.

The author's notes explain in great detail many of the things done in this TAS which may be confusing to those who aren't familiar with Ocarina of Time speedrunning. Reading them is strongly advised.

Arkanoid (1987) strongly resembles the arcade game Breakout (1976). In Arkanoid, the paddle is actually a spaceship, and the bricks are space walls. The goal of the game is to break through the space walls and defeat the villainous Doh in order to escape from the space labyrinth.

This incredible TAS of Arkanoid, made by Baxter, inspires awe in a manner comparable to the Gradius movie. No ball is ever lost, even though three balls are juggled in every level where possible.

Battletoads (1991) is a futuristic beat 'em up game known for its extreme difficulty spread over 12 difficult levels. The mechanics in the game also change drastically from level to level, making the game one of the hardest and most varied for the NES.

In this game, the second most diabolical evil genius in the universe, The Dark Queen, has kidnapped Princess Angelica and Pimple - a battletoad. Rash and Zitz must save them by traveling through the most insane multilevel set of plans ever designed. This includes falling down huge shafts, racing through obstacle courses at breakneck speeds, riding on snakes through a massive maze of spikes, passing through a killer ventilation system, navigating through a missile defense system, climbing a never ending revolving tower, and much much more. Along the way, the Battletoads must also face off against an evil army of robots, genetically engineered rodents, and The Dark Queen herself.

In this run, feos, Alyosha, and Samsara improved upon the previous publication by 2:39.33 using many new tricks and glitches.

This run has two players and does not use warps.

As always, a bug on level 11 prevents player 2 from moving, so he gets a game over for that level. Player 1 plays level 11 alone and player 2 comes back for level 12. This is a bug in Battletoads itself.

Battletoads (1991) is a futuristic beat 'em up known for its graphics and extreme difficulty. The story is that the sexy Dark Queen who wants to rule the universe has kidnapped Princess Angelica and a toad named Pimple. Two other toads, Rash and Zitz, attempt to rescue them and defeat the Dark Queen.

Maybe you thought Battletoads was a game full of amphibians, but it is actually full of bugs. Those beta testers really should have spent a little more time on this game...

In this run, feos and MESHUGGAH beat the previously fastest TAS of this game by 2:22.16, this time using 2 players instead of 1. You will laugh, you will cry, but most of all, you will wonder how in the world they broke this game so much. Do yourself a favor and read the authors' notes.

Cheetahmen II is the unfinished sequel to game #52 of Action 52. The game contains 6 of the 10 levels originally proposed, in which the player takes control of Apollo, Hercules, and Aries, switching off every two levels.

This run is done with a patched ROM that allows all 6 levels to be played without invoking rare glitches. Here's the run of the original ROM that uses the mapper register glitch to start from level 5.

The author, andypanther, improves the previous run by 11 frames with some minor strategy changes and lag reduction.

This is a non-glitched run of Dragon Warrior 3, now under 2 hours long.

This game is known in the TAS world as being a pain to play due to the RNG (random number generator) being much harder to manipulate than most other games. As a result, seemingly random actions throughout the game are actually intentional manipulation of the RNG to ensure favourable outcomes, such as avoiding monsters or good battle outcomes.

To give you an idea of how surprising this time is to most players, the previous run is about 24 minutes longer than this one. Even before that, any run that was under 3 hours long was deemed to be very difficult to perform.

EarthBound Beginnings is the first game in the Mother/EarthBound series, known simply as Mother in Japan. It was localized for a 1990 US release, but wasn't released outside Japan until 2015. During that time, the original localized title, "EarthBound", was used for the English release of Mother 2.

Long referred to as "EarthBound Zero" by fans, the game was finally given an official title for its Wii U eShop release.

This movie is done on the US prototype, which does not have the "bread crumbs" glitch used in our other movie of the game. It does, however, have a run button, which means this movie may seem faster at times, even though it's a lot longer.

Kirby's Adventure is a colorful game that's very long for a NES game. Normal gameplay forbids the UFO from being taken from level to level, but using a bug discovered by kirbymuncher, TASeditor manages to keep the UFO, and blazes through much of the game using it. The speed with which he defeats midbosses and bosses is often very surprising.

This new TAS of Kirby's Adventure is an improvement of 2:19.65 over JXQ's run.

To see the game completed even faster, see this run, which uses an unusual glitch involving the Stone ability and water to activate the credits early.

On this site, we make perfect movies, and then we surpass them. Of course, if we can surpass them, they were not perfect in the first place, but who would have known?

When "perfection" is defined as "as fast as possible", it requires some sacrifices. Indeed, this movie sacrifices a lot in the playability of the game. Full of tricks to pass through walls, tricks to avoid mandatory battles, tricks to pass through enemies relatively unharmed, tricks to acquire weapon refills in little time — there is very little in this movie left that resembles normal playing. Even death is used as a viable playing strategy that saves time. All of the tricks are still performed by the means of mere controller input, even though significant portions of the input were calculated by a computer program.

This movie is a considerable improvement of 3:04.39 to the previous movie; this is mainly due to a new technique which tricks the game into calling an 'end of level' object.

Of course, upon watching this movie, one does have to question something... is it Mega Man saving the world? Or Dr. Wily trying to save it from absolute destruction?

This movie is different from the other Rygar movie in that it plays all levels and doesn't use any glitch to warp from a boss battle to another.

Aside from that limitation, this movie makes full use of all the bugs and glitches in the game which can be used to speed up the run. If you are wondering what really is going on in this movie, see the Rygar Tricks page for some info about the tricks used.

This is a 4 minutes and 43.38 seconds improvement to the previous movie.

Super Mario Bros 3 completed fast ― without using the magic whistles.

Although this movie doesn't use the magic whistles, it does skip stages, and actually skips them quite a lot, with the aid of various items such as the hammers.

This is an improvement of about 44.5 seconds over the previous movie.

Ever since Morimoto published his legendary movie in mid-2003, the players at TASVideos have repeatedly made it faster and faster! Of course, there doesn't ever seem to be a stop for when it is fastest.

Created by a Japanese comedian who hated video games, this game was meant to be near impossible to complete. Rumor has it that at one point the player must leave the controller untouched for 1 hour and fight a "final boss" with over 1 million hit-points. Although this isn't true, the game makes no sense, which is why it is so hard to beat.

In this run, was0x completes the game without using the "scrolling glitch", the only major timesaver in the game. We also have a run demonstrating that glitch.

Wizards & Warriors is a famous platform game with quirky physics where a mere bird can make a heavy iron-clad knight bounce several feet into the air.

This is a full completion of the game. We also have a run that beats the game as fast as possible using the "reuse levels" glitch.

This TAS is around 92 seconds faster than the previous version by Walker Boh due to better luck manipulation and new minor glitches.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is quite different from most of the early games in the Legend of Zelda series. It combines an overworld view with side-scrolling platform stages. In addition, the character can gain experience and levels, visit towns, and earn spells and items which are needed to proceed.

This movie is a new branch that allows warps but not the scroll-lock glitch, used in the other run we have published. A "warp" (or "wrong warp") in Zelda II is when an exit takes Link somewhere other than where that exit is supposed exit into. Read the authors' comments for details. Here is a warpless run of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (1988), which introduced RPG elements and a side-scrolling view instead the traditional Zelda overhead view. An evil magician has cast a sleep spell on Princess Zelda. Link must place 6 crystals in palaces throughout Hyrule in order to release the binding force that protects the Triforce of Courage hidden in the Great Palace.

This movie is an improvement of 9.31 seconds compared to the previous run. Most of the new time saved is from getting almost impossible fairy spawns at overworld traps. Please read the authors' comments for details.

This movie avoids using the extremely gamebreaking hyperspeed and scroll-lock glitches seen in the warp glitch branch. This movie also avoids all of the minorly gamebreaking wrong warps in order to significantly increase the technical skill required to create the movie; we also have a movie which does use these "glitched warps," which allows a rather different route through the game.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is the first installment of the Castlevania series on PSX. Follow Dracula's son Alucard as he glitches through the castle on a quest to end his father's life.

This run is played on a Replay save file (not newgame+ because neither experience nor items are carried over) using the Luck Mode command. Using Replay allows the player to skip most cutscenes and alters what the librarian can sell. Using Luck Mode lowers the player's base strength which, among other changes, ironically makes the run faster by enabling a route filled with kicking enemies that wouldn't be possible otherwise.

If you prefer the main character to have muscular bare arms and to pray to the rain gods to defeat bosses, you may enjoy the Richter version. This is the second in a series of seminal platformers for the PlayStation, with very similar gameplay to its predecessor.

This run by Mukki finishes the game fast without using the box glitch to corrupt the memory. There is also a run that uses this glitch and completes the game even faster.


Note for viewers: In order to be sync-stable, a sound plugin with less than perfect sound quality needed to be used, so do not be alarmed if the sound is not flawless. However, using a different plugin was possible for the introduction and the ending. There is also a slight graphical glitch in level 23 where textures are missing, but this is very minor.

Crash Bandicoot: Warped is the third game of the Crash Bandicoot series developed by Naughty Dog. The story takes place immediately after the events of the previous game. It features similar gameplay to the first two games in the series.

This run from The8bitbeast plays through all 25 levels and defeats all five bosses of the game as fast as possible, avoiding the use of both the item glitch and gate clip while taking advantage of zip-zagging.

In true platformer-sequel style, Spyro the Dragon's vacation is interrupted by a dinosaur-riding sorcerer by the name of Ripto invading the world of Avalar, who naturally needs to be stopped. Since vacation is the paramount concern of Spyro, this is naturally done as quickly as possible without any concern for the well-being of Avalar.

This run aims to beat the game as fast as possible while collecting 14 talismans (the minimum normally necessary to be able to fight Ripto). We also have a run that beats the game even faster by bypassing these items.

The author has also done a run for the first Spyro game.


A sound plugin with less-than-perfect sound reproduction (in particular during cutscenes like the ending cinematic, which are largely silent) is necessary for the run to sync; do not be alarmed if this affects your enjoyment of the movie.

Mole Mania, known as Moguranya (モグラ~ニャ) in Japan, is an action puzzle game. The main character is a mole named Muddy Mole, whose wife and children have been kidnapped by the farmer, Jinbe. Muddy has to go to Jinbe Land and save his family. In the game, the player will solve puzzles by moving a black ball to a gate. However, there are many obstacles and enemies in the way. Therefore the player will dig into ground to find ways around them.

This run aims to beat all levels as fast as possible without using surrender. To accomplish this, the author, Ryuto, uses a warp glitch to skip many rooms. As always, please see the author's notes for more details.

Chrono Trigger is one of the most dearly loved games from the SNES library. In it, you play as Crono and set off on a journey through time to save the world from the villainous Lavos.

The game can be ripped apart in a matter of minutes through advanced save corruption techniques, but in this movie the author forgoes this exploit in order to play through more of the game, and does so in barely more than half the time of the last run in the same category. Don't expect this run-through to follow a coherent narrative any time soon, though — it still skips quite a lot of content.

From the opposite side of the usual formula of breaking a game to reach the credits as fast as possible, Saturn finishes Chrono Trigger in a single pass while trying to get as much done as possible without glitching the game out. Consequently this video actually looks like an otherwise normal playthrough by an extremely skilled player.

This run aims for maximal completion within reasonable constraints. This includes:

  • All forms of Spekkio (except the highest level) are defeated
  • All Tabs (stat upgrade items) are collected
  • All characters' Techs are learned
  • All the major sidequests are completed
  • At least 1 of every item is collected

It isn't technically possible to do everything possible in Chrono Trigger in a single playthrough, but this run aims to get most of it done.

Some very heavy experience grinding occurs between 2:16:45 and 2:26:18. Viewers may wish to skip through this segment of the video.

Trying to strike a compromise with peace activists, the guy who destroys the world bare-chested has been ordered to stop an alien invasion while taking as few lives as possible. As such, this run completes Contra 3 while only destroying enemies and obstacles if they prevent advancement. This requires much more careful dodging than the other run that avoids the warp glitch does.

Our hero takes the dodging one step further by adding the limitation that he cannot shoot enemy projectiles. However, frustrated by the lack of carnage and by the political pressure, our hero lets off steam sometimes by shooting the scenery and doing entertaining dances and poses.

This run improves the previous publication by 25.40 seconds.

Kirby Super Star is a consolidation of eight Kirby games in one. Since most of the games must be completed to reach the credits, this movie is fairly long.

Mario's doctor heard about the "Magic Mushrooms" which make Mario grow to twice his normal size and let him break bricks. Fearing for Mario's health, he orders Mario to avoid those nasty powerups.

This run aims to complete as many exits as possible without collecting a powerup or visiting any Switch Palaces. Unable to fly, Mario is forced to confront most obstacles and overcome them in unique ways. Riding Yoshi is also banned. 86 out of the total 96 exits are completed.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is a vibrant, colorful and fun game that stars the popular Yoshi. From a technical standpoint, the game is very exceptional on the SNES due to its use of the SuperFX chip, which allows for many cool special effects that are otherwise impossible on the SNES.

This movie by Carl Sagan (no, not that Carl Sagan) is fast-paced, action-packed, and full of entertaining tricks and maneuvers. In other words, the very essence we tool-assisted speedrun makers enjoy. It also improves the previous run of this game by over 5 minutes. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is a vibrant, colorful and fun game that stars the popular Yoshi. From a technical standpoint, the game is very exceptional on the SNES due to its use of the SuperFX² coprocessor. The chip allows for many cool special effects that are otherwise impossible on the SNES.

This is a 100% completion of the game. It plays through all the levels and collects every item that contributes to end-of-level score: 5 flowers, 20 red coins, and 30 stars. By getting 100% completion in each stage, six extra stages are also unlocked. These are played at the end of the run, again with 100% scores.

The authors of the run have spent over three years working on this run, showing off plenty of egg juggling, precise shots, and other incredible antics. This run does not use certain glitches present in the other runs of the game (an any% run and a warp glitch run), but there should still be plenty to surprise you. At the end of Metroid II: Return of Samus, there is but one Metroid left in the universe. Bad things happen, and Samus Aran must once again head for Planet Zebes to battle Mother Brain, Ridley, and the Space Pirates. (And a few other bosses too.)

This movie improves on both prior low% runs (one that collects the Ice Beam and one that collects the Speed Booster) by collecting the Speed Booster and using various Shinespark-related glitches to render the Gravity Suit unnecessary, pushing the total required number of items from 14 down to 13. The author's comments are very detailed, and well worth a read if you're curious about just how everything was done.

There are a number of other routes that can be taken while still getting 13 items, but all of those routes require a specific glitch when fighting Draygon which gives you a non-infinite but arbitrarily large amount of ammunition; the item route in this movie does not permit the use of this glitch. If you want to see this glitch, it is now featured in the any% run.

This run beats both the real time and game time of the previous any% records by Taco & Kriole (2009) and Saturn (2011). The real time improvement is 58.70 seconds whereas the game time improvement is 2 seconds, resulting in a real time of 37:39.1 and a game time of 22:36.

Super Metroid is a very well-known game in the world of TASing, and there have been many speedruns of this game published here at TASVideos over the years. This run demonstrates one of the hardest categories of speedrun possible for the game, Reverse Boss Order. In this category, Samus kills the four main bosses backwards from the game's intended order.

This category is especially difficult since Samus does not receive her extra suits until quite late in the run. As a result, most of the gameplay in Norfair is a desperate race against the clock as Samus's health decreases constantly in the heated areas. Needless to say, every single energy tank matters much more than it ever would in a normal run. Also, water areas in Maridia are quite difficult to navigate quickly without the Gravity Suit.

This run by Saturn improves on the previous movie by 1:24.26 due to a number of new tricks and strategies. See the submission notes for more details.

Full completion of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Both this run and the short version use a wobbling trick in order to make Link walk a bit faster. The execution of this maneuver requires the usage of a controller that allows the player to press Up+Down simultaneously (such as, in this case, a modified Snes9x's controller). The traveling-through-walls trick that is seen in the short version is not used.

This run features an improvement of a little over 4 minutes.

In VVVVVV, the player controls Captain Viridian, who is lost in an alternate dimension, in search of the missing members of the spaceship's crew. Instead of jumping, the player is able to control the direction of gravity, allowing Captain Viridian to flip between the floors and ceilings of the environment. The graphical style of the game is heavily influenced by the Commodore 64.

In this run, Scepheo blazes to the ending in less than 9 minutes (7:55 according to the in-game timer), skips the fearsome Gravitron, and rescues the crew in a fraction of the length of the ship's regulated lunch break. Scepheo also improves Masterjun's previous run by over 4 and a half minutes through a new route and a new glitch that allows the captain to be flung out of a teleporter into a wall. This run avoids using glitches that require pressing the Escape key. There is also a run that uses these glitches to beat the game even faster.
