From Wikipedia:

The player(s) takes control of the DC Comics character Superman, who must repair the bridge destroyed by Lex Luthor, capture Luthor and his criminal underlings, enter a phonebooth to turn back into Clark Kent, then return to the Daily Planet in the shortest amount of time. To slow Superman's progress, Kryptonite has been released by Luthor. If hit by Kryptonite, Superman loses his abilities to capture criminals and fly. To regain them, he must find and kiss Lois Lane.

However, jlun2 uses a pause demo glitch to warp to the end. That is all.

Commander Keen 5: The Armageddon Machine (1991) is a part of the popular Commander Keen saga, developed by id Software. It is a direct continuation of the previous episode of Goodbye Galaxy, in which Commander Keen (Billy Blaze) has learned from the Oracle of Gnosticus IV that the evil Shikadi plan to blow up the galaxy with their doomsday device, the Omegamatic (It slices! It dices! It causes a 100,000 light year-diameter quantum explosion!). Naturally, he sets out to sabotage the machine and stop the Shikadi.

Using a series of glitches, Keen completes only four stages to get to the end game, only one of which takes any significant length of time, and destroys the Quantum Explosion Dynamo, the core of the Omegamatic in the impossibly short time of 2:02. In the process, he manages to inadvertently prevent the Shikadi from accomplishing their escape (though you have to watch the ending very closely to figure out that this has happened here).

Commander Keen 6: Aliens Ate My Baby Sitter is the final chapter in the Commander Keen saga. Eight-year old Billy Blaze, as Commander Keen, must save his babysitter from being eaten by Bloogs.

Commander Keen 6 is also the third Keen game to get absolutely destroyed at TASVideos. Watch as Keen goes over, around, or through everything in his way to beat the entire game in a bit over three minutes. Reading the author's comments is recommended, and probably mandatory if you want to know what happened.

Adventure Time - Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?!! is a DS game developed by WayForward, based on the popular show Adventure Time. Its gameplay is heavily inspired by Zelda II.

In this run, arandomgameTASer heavily abuses many glitches in the game, in particular an item jumping glitch, to beat the game in record time. Mathematical!

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (2005), the first installment of Castlevania on Nintendo DS, is a direct sequel to GBA hit Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow.

Like its predecessor, after finishing the game, you can choose to ignore pretty-boy Soma Cruz and instead play as Julius Belmont. Unfortunately, it seems that Julius's skills have waned a bit since his last appearance. Yoko Belnades and Alucard easily pick up the slack, though... or they would, but this run skips Yoko.

Unlike our other Julius run for Dawn of Sorrow which goes through more of the game, this run manages to skip most of the game by using a zipping glitch to get into the Mine of Judgement early.

Dawn of Sorrow (2005), the first installment of Castlevania on Nintendo DS, is a direct sequel to GBA hit Aria of Sorrow. Everyone is trying to kill our hero Soma Cruz, since in the previous game he absorbed all of Dracula's attributes. Leave it to weird cults to try and bring about the end of the world by unleashing this power.

The game is so fully broken at this point that there really is no plot in this run. Or final boss. Or much of anything at all. Using movement optimizations and a new zip, this movie completes the game 19.33 seconds faster than its predecessor. More details about the glitches can be found in the author's comments.

The second Castlevania title released on Nintendo DS after Dawn of Sorrow, this game is a direct sequel to BloodLines on Sega Genesis. Dracula rises from the dead yet again (cue groan), and it's up to Jonathan Morris, helped out by Charlotte Aulin, a powerful mage student, to defeat him.

This run is an improvement of 14.06 seconds over the previous run by the same author and uses many of the same glitches. Yet another slightly different route selection as well as better optimisation sends Dracula back to his coffin even faster.

Beating Dracula into a pile of dust in under five minutes wasn't enough for our heroes, so this time they wreck his entire castle and surrounding areas before killing him. Every boss is slain, so you get to see more of that fast "showtime" action. Significant glitching is used; read the author's comments for more information.

The only war going around here is breaking at least 23 traffic laws and shooting goons with what ought to be a Gatling gun.

This run beats the previous version by 4.9 seconds.

Kirby: Canvas Curse is one of many sequels in the Kirby franchise. In this installment, Kirby and the inhabitants of Dream Land are all turned into paint by the witch Drawcia, with Kirby being stuck as a limbless ball. Players must guide Kirby through various stages via the DS touchpad.

In this run, GloriousLiar exploits quirks in the way the game handles said touchpad, allowing him to launch Kirby at ludicrous speeds to beat this game in the blink of an eye.

Pokémon: Pearl Version is part of the 4th generation of Pokémon games, after Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. For the first time in the main series, it features 3D graphics and online play over the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. In addition, there are 107 new Pokémon to catch.

In this run, MKDasher beats the game fast using luck manipulation and a major glitch that loads the overworld map incorrectly, allowing him to venture outside the level boundaries. For more information, see the author's comments.

Super Mario 64 DS is a remake of Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo DS, released in 2004 along with the system. It features improved graphics, new levels and playable characters, and most importantly in this case, a different "polish".

More importantly, it features different glitches than those featured in the runs of the original SM64.

This run improves the predecessor movie by 39.71 seconds.

For the out-of-bounds parts, where no textures are normally loaded, the author provided a hacked encode that shows the textures for better comprehension.

The second quest of The Legend of Zelda is what you get by having completed the game once. It is more difficult than the first quest. In this movie, the authors enter ZELDA as the player's name to start the 2nd quest without having to complete the game first.

The authors in this run also enter some of their own code, and don't really complete the game a second time either – yet somehow do. See the authors' notes for more details.

We also have a non-glitched run of this 2nd quest.

Without warning, the forces of Blue Moon mount an assault on the nation of Orange Star. Only Orange Star's new advisor, in collaboration with Orange Star's commanding officers, can stop them and get to the truth behind this sinister plot.

At least, that's what they'd normally do if they weren't capable of just magically compelling their opponents to surrender at the sight of them.

Using a glitch in the design maps mode of the game, this run by Kiske and mtvf1 completes the game impossibly quickly by forcing opponents to yield, allowing instant wins in the campaign missions. The author also improves the previous run by 12.80 seconds through new tricks and better use of the "force surrender" glitch.

The Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow main quest TAS has become even more glitched. Using an obscure out-of-room travel technique involving in-game saving and subsequent dying, klmz plows through the game with the confident pace of a cold-blooded killing machine in a little under seven minutes — a whole 31.72 seconds faster than the previous movie by the same author!

We recommend reading the author's comments for more information on the death warp glitch and other time-saving techniques used to make this improvement happen.

If you would like to see more of the game, we also have a run that does not make use of major warp glitches, as well as a run that collects every soul in the game.

When played normally, Castlevania: Circle of the Moon is a rather long game, in which exploration, leveling up, and killing bosses in order to gain access to different items or portions of the castle is necessary. However, a bit of luck manipulation and a series of glitches involving DSS cards throw all these aspects of gameplay out of the window, allowing the player to warp directly to Dracula and kill him humiliatingly in just over 5 minutes.

This movie is a 21 frame improvement over the previous movie by the same author due to some small optimizations.

The main quest completion time has been shortened to nearly one fourth of what it initially was, thanks to the discovery of a glitch that allows Juste to sink into walls.

This is a 3:25.15 minute improvement over klmz's movie. Like in the previous movies, the author picked up an item to display those cool CRITICAL's for entertainment, at the cost of some time.

However, if you still think there is not enough zipping through walls, be sure to watch the second quest completed in less than half a minute!

This is a really, really fast TAS through Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance played with Maxim, who is only available after the game is beaten once. Most of the game is glitched through by being stuck in different walls, so it's hard to explain what happened in this run; see it for yourself.

This is a 1 frame improvement over the previous run by gstick.

If you like this run but have a craving for more Maxim action, be sure to check out the Maxim warpless run.

Densetsu no Stafy, or The Legendary Starfy, is a platform game developed by TOSE and published by Nintendo. The story is that a cute little star named Starfy accidentally releases a powerful demon from a magic jar. The demon, Ogura, then takes over Starfy's home in the cloud-kingdom of Pufftop and causes a storm which knocks Starfy into the water below. With the help of some new water-abilities and new friends, Starfy journeys to return to Pufftop and seal Ogura away once again.

The author, jlun2, abuses a glitch that allows him to start playing from the middle of the attract mode demo and challenge the final boss much earlier than he's supposed to. In doing so, he improves his previous attempt by 4.71 seconds through better optimization.

Mystery Mayhem is a Scooby-Doo game that appears to be based on the newer movies. Much of the game focuses on Shaggy and Scooby as they run from monsters, complete puzzles and find clues to solve each of the game's five mysteries.

Of course, all those little accomplishments mean a lot of high-fives are in order! This rapid high-fiving and switching partners happens to cause a speed glitch that allows jlun2 to skip large parts of rooms.

It would be pointless to describe The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past here, because this run has little to do with the game itself. Using glitches exclusive to the GBA version, Link rips a hole in the space-time-continuum, enters the Palace of the Four Swords, and finishes the game in just over 5 minutes.

This run improves the previous publication by 21.16 seconds, primarily through a new trick that ends input early, using buggy boomerangs to finish off the Dark Links.

Yu-Gi-Oh!: 7 Trials Of Glory World Championship 2005 is a card game released by Konami in 2005, based on the popular manga and anime series Yu-Gi-Oh!. The game follows the protagonist on his quest to become the World Champion of Duel Monsters.

In this run, GenericMadScientist decides to instead break all the rules, and beat the game by abusing a glitch in the card shop, which allows the player to complete the game in just under 40 seconds.

Devil Island, also known as Emo Dao (惡魔島), is an action role-playing bootleg game for the Game Boy Color developed by Vast Fame. It copies Konami's Japan-exclusive NES game, Getsu Fuuma Den, with its gameplay. The game's aesthetics are styled after the Castlevania franchise, also by Konami. Much like Castlevania, the player's default weapon is a whip, except it can be held down for rapid fire.

This run abuses the demo mode of the game to get all items and reach the end of the game early, which is why it is so short. See the author's comments for some explanations.

Keitai Denjū Telefang (携帯電獣テレファング) is a series of video games produced by Smilesoft and published by Natsume. The games are monster-battling games, where the player contacts various creatures using a cell phone-like device called a D-Shot in order to get them to battle the foes he or she will encounter. The name of the series derives from Keitai, which is Japanese for "cell phone," since phoning creatures is an integral part of the game, and "fang," to symbolize the various beasts involved.

This movie improves its predecessor by more than a half of a minute. Significant glitching is used; you will likely have to read the authors' comments to understand what's going on.

Pokémon: Silver Version takes place 3 years after Blue, Red and Yellow, and puts the player in a brand new world: Johto. The gameplay is very similar to the previous games, but with several improvements, including new functions for the player's PokéGear, a Pokédex that can now be sorted by evolution type, and of course, new Pokémon.

In this run, MrWint uses a glitch involving the Coin Case to execute arbitrary code and finish the game 24 minutes faster than the previous version. As with his TASes of Red Version, the entire input file was generated by a computer program that brute forced the game for optimal luck manipulation. The expansive testing done by the program is the reason for the astronomical rerecord count.

We also have a run of a second generation Pokémon game that avoids corrupting the memory.

Rockman DX3, also known as Zook Hero 2, is an an unlicensed pirate game developed by Vast Fame that rips gameplay off the Rockman X series. Just like Rockman X, there are eight stages, and six of them contain a boss who gives you his weapon upon defeat. The protagonist, Zook, also has abilities nearly identical to those of X. Despite these similarities, the code and graphics appear to be completely original and the music is actually decent.

The author, Mothrayas, plays the most popular and widely available release, which happened to be released with the final boss stage already unlocked, leading to the incredibly short completion time.

Proving yet again the lengths a TAS can go in destroying a game, this run features a warping glitch that allows for severe sequence breaking. The final boss is reached within a handful of minutes and defeated with minimal weaponry.

The author, bobmario511, surpasses the previous run by 0.35 seconds through a completely different route.

There is a movie of this game that does not use the warp glitch.

Note: While this movie appears to be slower than the previous one, that run's time was calculated with an incorrect frame rate. This run is indeed faster.

Final Fantasy Adventure is the first game of the Seiken Densetsu (聖剣伝説) series, but it does contain some classic Final Fantasy elements. The series is probably best known for the SNES game Secret of Mana. This game was later remade on the Game Boy Advance as Sword of Mana. Its gameplay resembles that of a The Legend of Zelda game, but with level building.

In this run, Touch-me utilizes a glitch to warp across the map, cutting down the completion time by a lot compared to the warpless run. He also improves the previous run in this category by 51:22.56 minutes thanks to a big new warp glitch that allows him to reach the top of the Tower of Gemma early.

Ash reveals his dark side, using save corruption and direct memory manipulation to catch 64 of the 151 Pokémon in the blink of an eye. Then he beats the game in less than a minute (in-game time) - without ever leaving his own room, bypassing Professor Oak's speech and skipping right to the high praise for his impressive stats.

This run is so glitchy that it's near impossible to follow what's going on without help; reading the author's notes is highly recommended.

To see a run of the first generation of Pokémon that doesn't take advantage of save data corruption, watch this movie.

Note: Although this movie appears to be slower than the one it obsoleted, it is actually 66 frames faster. The reason for the slower time is that the emulator used in this run is more accurate and runs at the correct, slightly slower framerate.

Pokémon: Red Version is part of the first generation of games within its famous series, known for having a very large number of beneficial glitches. In fact, the game can be completed in less than one minute of in-game time using save data corruption (as evidenced by this run), but this run avoids such techniques in favor of activating an entirely different glitch.

This run obsoletes the author's previous run as well as Primorial#soup's longstanding run through a new route that must be seen to be believed. Suffice to say, no heavy glitches are used and yet the game is still completed in around 22 minutes.

Pokémon: Red Version is part of the first generation of games within its famous series, known for having a very large number of beneficial glitches. In fact, the game can be completed in less than one minute of in-game time by save data corruption as shown by this run, and it can be completed in under half an hour using a more "conventional" glitch, as shown by this run. These runs break the game, and avoid much of the gameplay intended by the developers.

In contrast, this run by MrWint catches all 151 Pokémon and completes the game, showing off much more of the game than seen in the other runs while still using many glitches to complete this goal much faster than the programmers could have imagined. Thanks to some new glitches, this run is over an hour faster than the previous movie in this category! For more details about the techniques used in this run, please read the author's notes.

Rolan's Curse is like a simplified version of the NES Legend of Zelda with slower gameplay and more restricted game world, resulting in a primitive hack-and-slash experience. Nevertheless, there exists an interesting storyline: The kingdom of Rolan has been invaded by the forces of some evil being called Barius. However, in this movie the final boss is never actually seen. Instead of meeting Barius face to face, the hero dies while defeating the first level boss. The game then decides to freak out and end right there, declaring the rest of the story unnecessary.

While this run appears to be slower than the previously published movie due to more accurate emulation, it is in fact faster by 0.36 seconds if emulation differences are not accounted for.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening is a classic Game Boy Zelda adventure. Link must travel across the dream world of Koholint Island, collecting the 8 Instruments to wake the Wind Fish and go home after a terrible shipwreck.

bobmario511 (the author), however, decided collecting instruments for a one-man band was a waste of time, so he skipped all of that and went straight to the Wind Fish (with a pesky boss battle in the middle).

This is a 0.56 second improvement over the previous run. See the author's notes for more details.

Trip World (1992) is an aptly named game developed by Sunsoft, a video game company you might know from titles like Gimmick!, Ufouria and Journey to Silius.

It follows a rabbit-like creature called Yacopu on his quest to retrieve the Maita Flower and return peace to the hearts of the people. Along the way he gains abilities like turning into a ball and a big, scary Godzilla-like rabbit.

MUGG's latest improvement is now about 30 seconds faster than the previous version, thanks to new glitches, new routes and better optimization.

Originally meant as a sequel to the Super Mario Land games, Wario Land eventually proved popular enough in its own right to launch its own series.

Wario, having been kicked out of Mario's castle in his first appearance, decides, in his eternal greed, to search for a statue stolen by the nefarious Captain Syrup and the Black Sugar Gang. This would normally involve questing for hidden treasures and collecting as many coins as he can possibly amass along the way.

Here, Wario decides he doesn't want to do any work, so he glitches out the map and uses a jet hat to corrupt the game's memory. After reaching an otherwise unreachable debug menu, he sets up a skip to the end of the game and demands his prize.

As this movie may be confusing to watch, reading the author's comments is recommended. The author, McHazard, has also completed another run of Wario Land that avoids heavy glitches.

Luigi wins a mansion in a contest and his brother, Mario, goes missing there. It is your goal to search the haunted mansion to figure out where he is. Your weapons to protect you are a flashlight and the Poltergust 3000, a ghost vacuum. Capturing ghosts and collecting keys helps you progress in your quest to find Mario.

The author, solarplex, utilizes out-of-bounds glitches to skip 19 of the 23 Portrait Ghosts and all of the Boos (except King Boo), beating the whole game in around 10 minutes with TAS timing, or 8:28:52 with RTA timing.

This run plays the Hidden Mansion, a mode unlocked after beating the game once that increases the power of the Poltergust and allows skipping some cutscenes, to make the run more entertaining. We do not normally accept runs that start from dirty SRAM; see the rules for more details.

Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc is the third major platform game installment in the Rayman series. It tells the story of how Rayman stops André, an evil black lum, from taking over the world with his army of sack-like "Hoodlum" soldiers. Unlike the game's predecessor, Rayman 3 took a more light-hearted turn; it has sarcastic self-referential undertones and pokes fun at the platforming video game genre.

In this run, Got4n & Andzura abuse many different glitches to skip large parts of levels and even some boss fights. A full list of glitches used and abused can be found in the submission text.

Spyro: Enter The Dragonfly is a platform/adventure game released in 2003. It's the first Spyro game not to be developed by Spyro creators Insomniac Games, instead being developed by Check Six Studios and Equinoxe Entertainment. The game is infamous for its rushed nature and being riddled with bugs, with many considering it one of the worst games of the franchise.

In this run, Fog abuses a seam in the base of the portal leading to the final boss, which allows the entire game to be skipped and completed in just over a minute of total game play.

Gods is a game about someone who wants to become a god and gain immortality. This is a delicate and paradoxical issue, because temporal immortality can be bought at just about every shop in this game, but the hero still dies numerous times.

Another fun aspect is bomb-jumping, which allows both higher jumps and traveling vertically through walls. Almost the whole 2nd half of the game is skipped with this trick! However, it is not verified whether this trick will work on an actual console.

Phantasy Star II, released in 1989, introduces us to the anti-utopian world of Mota, now dominated by the Mother Brain computer. Rolf, a government agent, is assigned the task of finding out why Mother Brain is malfunctioning, and yet his role in the destiny of Algo is far, far greater than anyone could imagine. Anyone, save one lone Esper. As the genetic construct Nei, the soldier Rudo, and others join him, can he topple the tyranny of Mother Brain and free Algo from an unholy evil?

Rolf and his friends, tired of all the violence they've seen, decide to take a pacifist route to save the Algol system with zero bloodshed. This run improves the old run by about 4 minutes through new glitches, including one that abuses the customized names of the characters to obtain some important items very early on. Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Cloudy Mountain was released for the Intellivision console in 1982 and was the first licensed D&D videogame. Though it bears little resemblance to the iconic tabletop RPG, it does have dungeons and it also has dragons.

The gameplay involves exploring a series of randomly generated mazes, searching for tools or arrows with which to progress on the overworld map, or to defeat monsters. The end goal is to reach Cloudy Mountain and recover the Crown of Kings from the fearsome winged dragons.

In the site's first ever Intellivision publication, TheWinslinator uses both controllers and a major skip to retrieve the Crown of Kings in record time.

A wizard is mixing a batch of magic potions when an explosion sends the gloves on his hands flying into the air. One lands safely outside the castle, but the other lands in an evil potion mixture. It's this evil glove who decides to take over the castle. Meanwhile, seven crystals, which used to sit on top of the castle and give the surrounding lands their life force, also fly off in all directions. Thankfully though, the good glove, Glover, changes the crystals into rubber balls so that they land safely.

Now Glover must find the crystals and put them back into the castle to restore life to the land, avoiding the bad glove who is out to stop him and take over the kingdom and the wizard's power.

Nahoc hops, bounces, and dribbles his way through this game, taking advantage of a conveniently-placed crystal to skip right to the boss room in every stage.

If you want to see more of Glover, we also have an all stages run.

Award - First edition TAS of 2016Award - N64 TAS of 2016Award - TAS of 2016
Mario Kart 64 is the first 3D game in the Mario Kart series, released in 1996 by Nintendo. Widely regarded as classic, it still retains a following to this day.

A run 7 years in the making, this Mario Kart 64 TAS features weatherton completing all 4 Grand Prix Cups in under 21 minutes. Due to the nature of the game, knowledge of the internal code allows for heavy RNG manipulation, getting even the most unlikely items on the first try. This and the incredible movement precision are used to create crazy shortcuts, often completing laps in mere seconds.

The submission text contains highly detailed information about the strategies of every track, the RNG manipulation and a lot of other information about the run.

You can watch the complete run being played back on a console.

At AGDQ 2014, the Mushroom Cup of this run was presented on console, and at AGDQ 2016, the Star Cup was presented.

Paper Mario, first released in Japan in August of 2000, is a role-playing game for the Nintendo 64. Bowser has kidnapped Princess Peach and stolen the Star Rod, which allows him to grant himself any wish. To counteract the power of the Star Rod, Mario must locate the seven Star Spirits, who can combine their power to stop Bowser's evil plans.

Numerous tricks and glitches allow a tool-assisted speedrun to skip large portions of the game and beat it impressively quickly. See the author's comments for more on this.

For more tool-assisted Paper Mario action, check out the run of The Thousand-Year Door by the same author.

At first there were 70 stars, because Bowser demanded it. Then there were 16 stars, because MIPS the Rabbit demanded it. Then there was 1 star, because Bowser's Sub demanded it. Then there were no stars, but 2 keys, because the door leading to the castle basement demanded it. Now there is 1 key because the viewers are impatient and demanded the game be quicker.

As with many other runs on this site, the goal of pure speed has resulted in the complete breaking of the game. Very little of the game's normal play remains. If you'd like to see more of what Super Mario 64 has to offer, see the "70 Stars, no BLJ" run or the "120 Stars" run.

This movie is 2457 frames faster than the previous movie due to the recently discovered and long sought after 'Moat Skip', new strategies and extreme optimizations made possible by parallel universes as explained in the submission text.

Super Mario 64 has a history of publications on this site. If you wish to see how it unfolded since the beginning, see the page SM64TASHistory. Also, if you have a hankering to see MIPS the rabbit, the 16 stars route has been improved.

Award - Nintendo 3D TAS of 2014
Although the length of this movie is 20:09.98 when timed with our standard method, applying the timing method used by most Zelda speedrunners (until last hit on Ganon) would result in a final time of 16:57.69. It's important to note this so that there's no confusion about which runs are faster than the others.

In this TAS of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the author aims to beat the game as quickly as possible. He achieves this by exploiting a large sequence break which involves "tricking" the game into warping Link directly from the Deku Tree (the first dungeon) to Ganon's Castle. Child Link then goes on conquering the whole castle without a single thought about becoming an adult beforehand.

Despite how quickly this game can be beaten these days, this run is almost two minutes faster than its predecessor thanks to new tricks at the Deku Tree and tower collapse sequence as well as many small improvements throughout the run.

This TAS was done using the Japanese version of the game. The reason for this is that the text is significantly faster than in the English version, which means that far less time is spent waiting for text boxes and cut scenes to end before getting back to the action.

The author's notes explain in great detail many of the things done in this TAS, which may be confusing to those who aren't familiar with Ocarina of Time speedrunning. Reading them is strongly advised.

Note: There are encodes of higher resolutions in the discussion thread.

Battletoads (1991) is a futuristic beat 'em up game known for its extreme difficulty spread over 16 difficult levels. The mechanics in the game also change drastically from level to level, making the game one of the hardest and most varied for the NES.

In this game, the second most diabolical evil genius in the universe, The Dark Queen, has kidnapped Princess Angelica and Pimple - a battletoad. Rash and Zitz must save them by traveling through the most insane multilevel set of plans ever designed. This includes falling down huge shafts, racing through obstacle courses at breakneck speeds, riding on snakes through a massive maze of spikes, passing through a killer ventilation system, navigating through a missile defense system, climbing a never ending revolving tower, and much much more. Along the way, the Battletoads must also face off against an evil army of robots, genetically engineered rodents, and The Dark Queen herself.

In order to make the game a bit easier, its creators embedded some secret warp zones to skip a few early levels in their entirety. But that simply wasn't good enough for MESHUGGAH, feos & Koh1fds; they decided to travel directly to level 3, where he invents his own warp and skips right to the grand finale. They took a glitch found in this TAS and exploited it even further, to the point the Dark Queen just gives up and returns Angelica and Pimple, going off to hatch an even more evil plan for next time. The glitch is done by breaking the game execution and sticking it right to the game ending.

This run conquers the predecessor movie by 0.84 seconds by using a more accurate core, and the discovery of the void jump trick.

Blaster Master is a fairly long game involving a random hero that jumps down a hole after his mutant frog, finds a tank, and proceeds to blow up a few bosses and rescue said frog. It's complicated.

In this movie the hero gets bored with the tank early on, skips the bosses and mostly decides to just go straight to the final boss and blow him up. The frog is saved and dissected, and Biology 101 is passed. Hooray!

This movie plays on the European version of the game, which includes a few bugs such as stopping movement by pausing and allowing double (and more) jumping. A changed zip mechanism is also in the European version which allows warping through things you really shouldn't be able to warp through.

This publication beats the previous movie by 9 seconds.

If you would like to see more of the game, we also have a warpless Blaster Master movie here that plays on the US version.

Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (originally known as 悪魔城伝説 or Akumajō Densetsu, meaning "Legend of the Demon Castle") is the story of Trevor Belmont's battle against Dracula from the times before Simon's battle in Castlevania. In this complex and difficult game, there are three playable allies whom Trevor can recruit: Alucard (Dracula's son), Grant DaNasty (a pirate captain), and Sypha Belnades (a mystic warlord).

Unlike the other branches of Castlevania III, this run uses a stairs glitch in Block 4 to climb directly to Dracula and skip most of the game. Only the USA version allows this glitch to work, so it was used instead of the Japanese version, which has superior sound quality.

Cheetahmen II is the unfinished sequel to game #52 of Action 52. The game contains 6 of the 10 levels originally proposed, in which the player takes control of Apollo, Hercules, and Aries, switching off every two levels.

This is the first movie to abuse the fact that some games do not initialize their states before reading them, which in this case results in one of the cart registers randomly taking a certain value that can force the game to start from level 5 on power-on.

Since the game really behaves like that on the console, it was decided to allow presetting such truly random bits on the emulator side. Read the submission text and its discussion thread for more details.

We also have an "all levels" TAS for this game, done on the patched ROM due to a bug in the original game preventing the player from progressing past level 4.

In Cosmo Police: Galivan, the player takes the role of the last remaining member of the Cosmo Police. His comrades died while trying to free the planet Cynep from the evil roaming on it. Now the player is the last hope.

This game is a mix between a shooter and a platformer: the player walks through the caves, jumps over obstacles and shoots everything in sight. Well, at least if he has a weapon: at the beginning he is unarmed and can only kick or punch. He has to find pyramids which were dropped by his dead colleagues (also sometimes from killed aliens), which grant an armor piece, more life energy and a weapon. When the player finds a pyramid, the weapon gets upgraded for a limited amount of time.

However, biggyboy & usedpizza exploit a glitch performed in the "alien world" portion of the first stage, during the transition of the first elevator (read the submission comments as well as this post for more details). Therefore, they reach a time of just 3 minutes and 3 seconds, being 944 frames faster than AmaizumiUni in the previous run.

Deadly Towers is an infamous 'Nintendo Hard' game, where you control Prince Myer in his quest to destroy seven bells guarded by seven bosses and stop the evil wizard Rubas. The character is slow and takes a lot of damage very easily, making the game usually a great challenge. While there are powerups which boost your abilities, they are generally found in secret passages with no indication of their location.

In this run by ars4326, the Japanese version Mashou (魔鐘) is used due to it containing an inventory glitch that, essentially, gives you unlimited bells after death-warping and defeating Cold Killer twice. New routes, sequence breaking, and movement optimizations are also involved in this updated run.

The last in the original Dragon Warrior storyline, this one follows "the Hero", who is tasked with saving the world from the archfiend Baramos. After cobbling together a group of people to take with him, the Hero must travel the world to find a way to Baramos's lair.

Or at least, that was what was supposed to happen. Thanks to a glitch involving a party of dead characters, vaxherd manages to manipulate his inventory and warp list to not only have extremely rare pieces of equipment from nothing, but also warps directly to where Baramos is located in a fraction of the time it would take normally.

In addition to this, vaxherd also uses a glitch involving resets and character names to manipulate the RNG and encounter formula at certain points, thereby beating the previous run by over seven minutes.

This is the JPN version of EarthBound Beginnings (also known as Mother (マザー) ). We also have a more normal run of the localized version, which doesn't include this glitch.

Final Fantasy II is the original Japanese sequel to Final Fantasy. It is not to be confused with Final Fantasy IV for the SNES, which was renamed "Final Fantasy II" in North America.

The game introduces chocobos and an activity-based progression system, in which the characters' statistics increase depending on how they are used or acquired.

This movie by pirohiko demonstrates multiple major glitches that allow the game to be completed in an impressively short time. For more details, we recommend reading the author's comments.

Final Fantasy III was the second of two Final Fantasy NES games to be released only in Japan, leading to the fourth game in the series being released to the rest of the world as Final Fantasy II. The game brings back the experience point system from the first game while changing up the character jobs formula by allowing the player to change a character's class mid-game as well as acquire new and advanced classes.

In this movie, the author, AmaizumiUni, abuses a bug that causes character inventory to overflow, corrupting the game's memory and triggering the credits early.

If what was done in this movie was possible in real life, economies worldwide would crash.

Ghostbusters is a hastily produced game based on the 1984 movie of the same name. The NES version is a notoriously bad port, and the Japanese version contains a glitch that allows the Ghost Alarm item to be sold for more than it costs, allowing entry into the Zuul Building much earlier than intended.

In this movie, MESHUGGAH improves the first run of this game by 38 frames through a few small optimizations. See the author's notes for more details.

Note: A bug in the Japanese version causes the ending screen to incorrectly display "りり". This movie will also sync while the PAXKKLAA Game Genie code is used, which shows the corrected text:

Conglaturation !!!

You have completed a grate game.

And prooved the justice of our culture.

Mega Man is the first game in the famous series that now comprises games on many different systems as well as several television shows and comic books.

While the other run of this game uses lots of tricks to reach the ending impressively quickly, pirohiko and FinalFighter decided it just wasn't fast enough. In this run, they manipulate an object to appear which allows them to execute arbitrary code and warp to the credits, all using only controller input. Might and Magic, released in 1986, was the first installment in the series that would later evolve into a whole fictional universe, encompassing both the actual M&M games and a multitude of subseries and spin-offs made in their own genres, including King's Bounty, Heroes of Might & Magic, and others.

Normally, this game is rather long. This movie by Dammit skips most of it by using a glitch that allows the player to get all the important items in a matter of a few minutes.

Pwn Adventure Z is a Zelda-like game featuring zombies, originally created for a "capture the flag" hacking competition. As such, it contains various intentional glitches and intentionally unfixed glitches that can be exploited for a fast completion.

This movie ignores all the intended glitches in favor of using save corruption to go out of bounds and defeat a duplicate copy of the final boss, thus skipping basically all the intended and intentionally-glitched gameplay of the game.

Rygar is an action game involving a hero with a shield as a weapon. Normally, the hero must obtain items, such as a grappling hook, to be able to explore the world of Garloz, and he must also defeat five bosses to gain access to the final area. However, these requirements can be circumvented with glitches. Indeed, this run kills no bosses except the final boss and does very little leveling.

In contrast to the any% run and the warpless run, which use the European version of Rygar, this movie uses the American version. The two ROM versions have some different glitches. It is an improvement of 65.58 seconds to the previous movie by Walker Boh – this time played by Lord Tom.

Although the route in this movie is almost exactly the same, time was saved mostly by accumulating the tone points (for Rygar's strength) a lot faster. There were other improvements as well. We recommend reading the author's comments for more details.

Award - NES TAS of 2014
Super Mario Bros 3 is a very famous game for the NES. There are normally two main ways to beat it: the quick way using warp whistles to skip worlds, and the longer way which goes through all the worlds. However, thanks to some esoteric memory corruption involving glitched pipe travel, it's possible to jump right into the princess's room in under three minutes! Bowser is never seen in this run at all.

This run gets to World 7-1 as quickly as possible to perform the glitch, and some unusual moves are done with enemy spawns and positions to get the glitch to work. See the authors' comments for some more details.

There are also author subtitles provided with the emulator movie file and primary encode to explain some of the key differences in this run.

Watch this run on a real NES. And here is how human beings perform the same glitch in real time.

Created by a Japanese comedian who hated video games, this game was meant to be near impossible to complete. Rumor has it that at one point the player must leave the controller untouched for 1 hour and fight a "final boss" with over a million hit-points. Although this isn't true, the game makes no sense, which is why it is so hard to beat.

The author, was0x, instead completes the game in a mere 4 minutes by simply walking off the edge of existence and magically ending at the final treasure room.

Additionally, he beats his previous run by 0.63 seconds via some really tight improvements.

If you want to see more of the game, we also have a run that forgoes the warp glitch.

Although Legacy of Llylgamyn is the third game in the Wizardry series, it was released second for the NES because Knight of Diamonds, the actual second game, was deemed to be too difficult for beginners (though it was, eventually, released for the NES as well).

Here, the object of the quest, the Orb of Earithin, mysteriously appears in a shop by way of a lost battle and a glitch involving the occasional result thereof of causing a character to be lost in the dungeon, bringing the quest to a close impossibly quickly.

In this game, you're an armor-clad knight with a big sword. You collect gems to bribe a red knight, kill evil beasts and rescue several "distressed damsels".

This movie, an improvement of 76 seconds over the previous, takes advantage of a glitch that allows you to re-enter the first map and substitute the last few levels with the first levels. There is also a slightly longer movie that does not use this trick.

Do you want to see more adventures of the iron-clad hero of this game, Kuros?
Read the Knights of the Old Coding online comic. It's hilarious.

The third game in the Wizards & Warriors series. Having been tricked out of his victory in the previous game, Kuros once again returns to do battle on evil and pretend he will marry every princess he meets.

Most of the old run remains unchanged, however, a known improvement over the previous run was implemented as well as a small oversight fixed. Therefore, this is an improvement of 2.34 seconds over the previous run. (note: the actual improvement is just of over 30 frames (roughly half a second), but due to the different FPS used by FCEU and FCEUX, it passes off as more)

The ending of this game is still epilepsy-inducing.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is quite different from most of the early games in the Legend of Zelda series. It combines an overworld view with side-scrolling platform stages. In addition, the character can gain experience and levels, visit towns, and earn spells and items which are needed to proceed.

However, the game also has a large glitch which produces massive speed when both Left and Right are pressed at the same time; due to the use of this and other glitches, most of this run features Link racing across Hyrule so fast that the screen can't keep up, and inexplicably warping between places that shouldn't be connected. Only a few items and one spell are collected, and the only enemy ever fought is the final boss. Luckily, he takes the same amount of damage no matter what level attack you have.

In this run, Arc improves on TASEditor's previous efforts by four seconds due to a recently discovered encounter glitch. See the author's comments for more details.

We also have a run that completes the six palaces without using the Left + Right glitch to turn the game into a barely comprehensible mess (but does allow the use of glitched warps) and another run that disallows both the Left + Right glitch and the use of glitched warps.

This movie was a part of a two-hour Zelda II TAS showcase with audio commentary by Arc, Inzult, Jackimus, Mithical9, and Feasel.

Not only was Castlevania: Symphony of the Night the first installment of the Castlevania series on PSX but also the first PSX game to have a published run here. Follow Dracula's son Alucard as he glitches through the castle on a quest to end his father's life.

ForgoneMoose and sockfolder, by corrupting the save data, manage to corrupt the memory and go straight to the ending, totally skipping Richter and the whole second castle.

A 100% run covering the whole castle is also available here. If you prefer the main character to have muscular bare arms and to pray to the rain gods to defeat bosses, you may enjoy the Richter version. If you want to see a run on Replay mode that can skip many cutscenes, see this run. A run with clear save without memory corruption is also available here.

This is the second in a series of seminal platformers for the PlayStation, with very similar gameplay to its predecessor.

A normal run of this game takes a rather long time to complete. However, by using a bug that corrupts the memory when jumping on top of an unbreakable box, the author gathers the crystals necessary to advance to the next set of stages unbelievably quickly, leaving only the bosses to make quick work of.

Note for viewers: In order to be sync-stable, a sound plugin with less than perfect sound quality needed to be used, so do not be alarmed if the sound is not flawless. However, using a different plugin was possible for the introduction and the ending.

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee details the adventures of Abe, a Mudokon, attempting to save his race from slavery and other horrible fates at the hands of the evil Glukkons.

This is the condensed version of a 100% run, in which only one (required) Mudokon is saved. This movie should be perfect for those who don't care about the well-being of the Mudokon race and just want to see some Oddworld parkour. Naturally, this run gets the bad ending.

The authors, Samtastic and Dooty, improve the previous run by 14:55.13 thanks to skipping Paramonia and Scrabiana and using a new glitch which skips Zulags 2 and 3.

In true platformer-sequel style, Spyro the Dragon's vacation is interrupted by a dinosaur-riding sorcerer by the name of Ripto invading the world of Avalar, who naturally needs to be stopped. Since vacation is the paramount concern of Spyro, this is naturally done as quickly as possible without any concern for the well-being of Avalar.

While the other movie of Spyro 2 mainly follows the route intended by the developers, this run by lapogne36 and Crash41596 invents its own path, cutting in and out of the game world at will and completing only the bare minimum needed to reach the final battle.

Tobal 2 is a 3D fighting game developed by Dream Factory and released by Square in Japan in 1997. Unlike its predecessor, Tobal No. 1, this game was not released in North America or PAL regions. There are four modes in the game: Tournament, VS, Training, and Quest.

In Quest mode, dungeons as well as a whole town are freely explorable. It also features role-playing elements and the ability to capture encountered monsters and use them as playable characters in VS Mode. This brings the amount of playable characters in this game to as high as 200.

In this run, pirohiko uses movement glitches and speedy fighting tactics to beat Quest Mode surprisingly fast.

Mole Mania, known as Moguranya (モグラ~ニャ) in Japan, is an action puzzle game. The main character is a mole named Muddy Mole, whose wife and children have been kidnapped by the farmer, Jinbe. Muddy has to go to Jinbe Land and save his family. In the game, the player will solve puzzles by moving a black ball to a gate. However, there are many obstacles and enemies in the way. Therefore the player will dig into ground to find ways around them.

The player skips 6 levels out of 8 using a glitch, causing the time records to be nullified from the second stage to the seventh stage. The previous run used a reset glitch to perform this skip. This time, a different warp glitch was used, which is where most of the 2:45.93 improvement comes from.

This game (along with Pocket Monsters: Red) is the Japanese version of the first generation of Pokémon games and the first ever Pokémon game.

This run, a ten frame improvement over the previous version, abuses a glitch that was fixed in later releases of Pocket Monsters (Pokémon) that allows a player to warp freely through the world. Victory is achieved in a matter of minutes with this route. Normally, the game takes well over an hour at the fastest to finish.

To see a more substantial run of the first generation of Pokémon, watch this movie. For a less substantial run (which also demonstrates that they didn't fix all the glitches in later versions), watch this one.

Note: This movie requires VBA rerecording v20, as it does not sync on any other version.

Montezuma's Revenge was one of the first platform games, combining treasure hunting, multiple rooms and puzzle solving. The player controls Panama Joe as he explores labyrinthine 16th century Aztec temples filled with enemies, obstacles, traps and dangers. Panama Joe can jump and climb ladders, but doesn't have much to offer in terms of combat, making it imperative for him to steer clear of enemies.

This run by Calfd skips most of each temple by abusing a bug that lets Panama Joe climb through the air. Calfd plays until the eleventh stage, after which there is no new content.

While Chrono Trigger (1995) usually takes days to complete, Crono decided he'd rather not have to sit through all the unnecessary stuff, like long cutscenes, unskippable boss fights and key plot events, so he did it in three minutes instead.

The 18-minute improvement comes from utilizing mid-frame resets which were recently implemented in lsnes.

One of the best (and best known) shooters of the 16-bit era, Contra 3: The Alien Wars forgoes any semblance of plot devices in favor of good old fashioned shooting and platforming with some tough as nails bosses, especially in this, the hardest mode.

Apparently not happy with an already amazing movie, Cpadolf felt the need to go on yet another black op, optimizing his distortions of space and time on the way to a 173 frame improvement.

This movie uses a 'warping' glitch to complete the game. There is also the 2-player version, which does not.

Dragon View is a side-scrolling role-playing video game released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in November 1994. Released in Japan as Super Drakkhen and otherwise known as Drakkhen II, it is meant to be a prequel to Drakkhen although it bears little resemblance to its predecessor. It uses the same pseudo-3D overworld system for which the series is most famous. Other features of Dragon View are its side-view action role-playing game (RPG) hybrid gameplay (used when exploring more detailed areas such as towns and dungeons), its well-translated first person storyline, and its emphasis on player-driven undirected exploration.

In this run, Khaz makes the game realize how boring it really is, and has it jump straight to the credits roughly halfway through the intended story. A side effect of this particular glitch is the cutscene after the credits getting glitched out and having the main character walk in place, forever.

More information on how this was achieved can be found in the submission notes.

EarthBound is a great RPG, designed by Shigesato Itoi in 1994-1995, and is also known by the name Mother 2.

It is best described as "random", in a good way. The game has a great emphasis on a humor, and indeed many things in the game are almost caricatured, from subplots to characters. It also has a versatile soundtrack.

Our description for the previous movie stated, "Although this being a speedrun (tool-assisted at that), most of the plot of the game is intact...". This time around, not so much. Thanks to some collision detection bugs, including one that shows that the Skip Sandwich is a fitting name for the item in ways the developers never intended, the author is able to move around the game's areas freely, completing the bare minimum number of tasks needed to keep the final battle from locking up.

Also unlike the previous movie, this one does use a death as a shortcut. However, the teddy bear survives this time around.

EarthBound, also known as Mother 2, is a great RPG, designed by Shigesato Itoi in 1994-1995. It is best described as "random", but in a good way. The game has a great emphasis on humor; indeed, many things in the game are almost caricatured, from subplots to characters. It also has a versatile soundtrack.

Pirohiko improved the previous TAS by almost 5 minutes by resetting at precisely the right time to corrupt the SRAM and skip most of the game, including the credits.

The second YouTube encode includes a scrolling input display.

This run by Keylie, eddie, pirohiko and Kadmony improves on the previous movie by 8:21.29.

For more details, we recommend reading the authors' detailed comments.

The second YouTube stream cuts almost all the game overs out, only leaving the first and the last one.

Kirby Super Star is normally a fairly long game split into a bunch of minigames, as the following run at TASVideos shows. However, in the Japanese version of the game, a glitch can be exploited on ladders that allows the player to basically take over the game's inner workings.

This run first goes to The Great Cave Offensive, since it has the first ladder that can be reached from a clean save. For many more technical details, read the author's submission comments.

Lufia 2 is an adventure RPG prequel to Lufia 1. In this installment, Maxim and his cohorts set out to take down the evil Sinistrals.

Normally, the game sports a large amount of puzzles, yet a shockingly low amount of battles. In this movie, however, Genisto uses 2 newly found glitches, explained in the submission text, which let anyone finish the game without even leaving the first room, improving the previous movie by almost 2 minutes.

This movie takes advantage of a bug in the dialogue handling that was discovered by accident during a live streamed playthrough. Under certain conditions, the game will erroneously present a dialogue choice allowing the player to skip to unrelated parts of the game script, which is used to skip to the "The End" screen.

This is the 4th published movie in a category of impressively fast Super Mario World TASes. It beats the game by jumping to the credits from one of the two levels available from the start, Yoshi's Island 2. This happens because a glitch involving eating a Charging Chuck allows manipulating the code being executed by the game using only controller input.

This run is 0.16 seconds faster than Masterjun's previous movie. This improvement comes mostly from kicking the green shell forwards by touching it while Yoshi is ascending instead of eating it after spitting out the fireballs, which allows to spit out the fireballs much further before getting the green shell.

For more movies like this, see this list of TASes that execute arbitrary code.

Using a similar glitch, Masterjun has also used mere controller input to embed his own games into Super Mario World itself.

This is a quick completion of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

Here, the author, Masterjun, abuses a glitch that causes Yoshi's tongue to extend infinitely. This confuses the game and causes it to jump to the SNES CPU registers and start executing arbitrary code, which triggers the credits.

There is also a run without game-breaking glitches and a 100% run.

Exploiting this glitch instead of a glitch that results in corruption of the egg list saved 1:19.26 over the previous movie.

Super Metroid is a platform game and a follow-up to Metroid II. Like the previous games in the series, it is not divided into separate levels; the planet Zebes is an open world which Samus traverses back and forth. This world is divided into rooms separated with doors which must be shot to be opened. Shooting is also used to open up secret passages, some of which contain nifty bonuses, but finding most of them is required to proceed in the game.

With a new moonwalking technique, this improves the previous speedrun by 4.99 seconds.

In a normal playthrough, this game is quite long. You must save four family members then progress to the final area to complete the game.

However, the authors use a glitch to skip directly to the final area, skipping 4/5ths of the game; in addition, several new glitches allow more of the final area to be skipped.

This new movie improves upon the previous movie by about 13 seconds.

SNES Zelda completed in a very quick manner. The trick that is used to cut completion time by so much is holding left+up+right while entering a corridor or staircase, allowing Link to clip through the wall and walk out of bounds.

Wizardry V: Heart of the Maelstrom is an RPG from the well-known Wizardry series of games. Normally, these games are very long. However, in keeping with the TASVideos tradition of making long RPG runs short, this run reaches the ending in half a minute through extensive glitching of the save data. See the author's comments for more information.

In this run, pirohiko improves his previous glitched TAS by 39.83 seconds.

But it seems that this quest is much easier than it appears. After completely skipping going through the starting gate, Anubis decides to play a bunch of minigames. This somehow causes his quest to become completed. There was much rejoicing.

Rayman Origins features the return of the Rayman character in a 2D platformer. Many of the original Rayman game's characters and enemies make an appearance, like Livingstones, Electoons, Betilla and the Magician's hat. There are also various characters from Rayman 2 such as Globox, the Teensies and Lums. The game's atmosphere, however, is different from the original Rayman game and has a very "wacky" feel instead. The main objective of each level is to rescue as many Electoons as possible similarly to the original game.

keylie, as 4 players, collects the minimum Electoons required to reach the Magician and defeat him in record time.

In VVVVVV, the player controls Captain Viridian, who is lost in an alternate dimension, in search of the missing members of the spaceship's crew. Instead of jumping, the player is able to control the direction of gravity, allowing the captain to flip between the floors and ceilings of the environment. The graphical style of the game is heavily influenced by the Commodore 64.

This movie by Masterjun utilizes a glitch that increments the current game state to trick the game into warping to the end cutscene. The glitch is triggered by pressing the Escape key to bring up the quit prompt while a dialog box is onscreen. Masterjun also improves the previous run by 0.30 seconds by using general optimizations in movement and key-presses.

See the submission comments for more details. There is also a run in which the game is played more as intended.
