Dawn of Sorrow (2005), the first installment of Castlevania on Nintendo DS, is a direct sequel to GBA hit Aria of Sorrow. Everyone is trying to kill our hero Soma Cruz, since in the previous game he absorbed all of Dracula's attributes. Leave it to weird cults to try and bring about the end of the world by unleashing this power.

The game is so fully broken at this point that there really is no plot in this run. Or final boss. Or much of anything at all. Using movement optimizations and a new zip, this movie completes the game 19.33 seconds faster than its predecessor. More details about the glitches can be found in the author's comments.

Pokémon: Pearl Version is part of the 4th generation of Pokémon games, after Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. For the first time in the main series, it features 3D graphics and online play over the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. In addition, there are 107 new Pokémon to catch.

In this run, MKDasher beats the game fast using luck manipulation and a major glitch that loads the overworld map incorrectly, allowing him to venture outside the level boundaries. For more information, see the author's comments.

The second quest of The Legend of Zelda is what you get by having completed the game once. It is more difficult than the first quest. In this movie, the authors enter ZELDA as the player's name to start the 2nd quest without having to complete the game first.

The authors in this run also enter some of their own code, and don't really complete the game a second time either – yet somehow do. See the authors' notes for more details.

We also have a non-glitched run of this 2nd quest.

Without warning, the forces of Blue Moon mount an assault on the nation of Orange Star. Only Orange Star's new advisor, in collaboration with Orange Star's commanding officers, can stop them and get to the truth behind this sinister plot.

At least, that's what they'd normally do if they weren't capable of just magically compelling their opponents to surrender at the sight of them.

Using a glitch in the design maps mode of the game, this run by Kiske and mtvf1 completes the game impossibly quickly by forcing opponents to yield, allowing instant wins in the campaign missions. The author also improves the previous run by 12.80 seconds through new tricks and better use of the "force surrender" glitch.

Yu-Gi-Oh!: 7 Trials Of Glory World Championship 2005 is a card game released by Konami in 2005, based on the popular manga and anime series Yu-Gi-Oh!. The game follows the protagonist on his quest to become the World Champion of Duel Monsters.

In this run, GenericMadScientist decides to instead break all the rules, and beat the game by abusing a glitch in the card shop, which allows the player to complete the game in just under 40 seconds.

This run improves the predecessor movie by 0.26 seconds.

Zook Man ZX4 (路克人ZX4) is a Game Boy Advance game by Vast Fame and the third known game in their Zook series. It is based loosely on the Rockman X games.

The game spans eight levels including an intro stage and a final boss rush. Several enemies are taken from Rockman X and Rockman 8, with the bosses being either recycled from previous Zook Hero games or being edits from other official Megaman games. The main character's design is based off of X.

This game was run as part of TASVideos' Dream Team Contest 6, and this TAS was built on a combination of multiple submissions of said contest - hence the high number of authors.

Pokémon: Silver Version takes place 3 years after Blue, Red and Yellow, and puts the player in a brand new world: Johto. The gameplay is very similar to the previous games, but with several improvements, including new functions for the player's PokéGear, a Pokédex that can now be sorted by evolution type, and of course, new Pokémon.

In this run, MrWint uses a glitch involving the Coin Case to execute arbitrary code and finish the game 24 minutes faster than the previous version. As with his TASes of Red Version, the entire input file was generated by a computer program that brute forced the game for optimal luck manipulation. The expansive testing done by the program is the reason for the astronomical rerecord count.

We also have a run of a second generation Pokémon game that avoids corrupting the memory.

Pokémon: Red Version is part of the first generation of games within its famous series, known for having a very large number of beneficial glitches. In fact, the game can be completed in less than one minute of in-game time by save data corruption as shown by this run, and it can be completed in under half an hour using a more "conventional" glitch, as shown by this run. These runs break the game, and avoid much of the gameplay intended by the developers.

In contrast, this run by MrWint catches all 151 Pokémon and completes the game, showing off much more of the game than seen in the other runs while still using many glitches to complete this goal much faster than the programmers could have imagined. Thanks to some new glitches, this run is over an hour faster than the previous movie in this category! For more details about the techniques used in this run, please read the author's notes.

Ash reveals his dark side, using save corruption and direct memory manipulation to catch 64 of the 151 Pokémon in the blink of an eye. Then he beats the game in less than a minute (in-game time) - without ever leaving his own room, bypassing Professor Oak's speech and skipping right to the high praise for his impressive stats.

This run is so glitchy that it's near impossible to follow what's going on without help; reading the author's notes is highly recommended.

To see a run of the first generation of Pokémon that doesn't take advantage of save data corruption, watch this movie.

Note: Although this movie appears to be slower than the one it obsoleted, it is actually 66 frames faster. The reason for the slower time is that the emulator used in this run is more accurate and runs at the correct, slightly slower framerate.

Rolan's Curse is like a simplified version of the NES Legend of Zelda with slower gameplay and more restricted game world, resulting in a primitive hack-and-slash experience. Nevertheless, there exists an interesting storyline: The kingdom of Rolan has been invaded by the forces of some evil being called Barius. However, in this movie the final boss is never actually seen. Instead of meeting Barius face to face, the hero dies while defeating the first level boss. The game then decides to freak out and end right there, declaring the rest of the story unnecessary.

While this run appears to be slower than the previously published movie due to more accurate emulation, it is in fact faster by 0.36 seconds if emulation differences are not accounted for.

This is the second and last true Mario game for the Game Boy. It features unique power-ups like carrots and bubbles, and allows the player to go through each of the worlds in any order. It also meant the first appearance of Wario, who would become a staple character for Nintendo.

This run improves the previous movie by 1:28.01, abusing the recently discovered "pause glitch" to execute arbitrary code and jump straight to the credits.

Originally meant as a sequel to the Super Mario Land games, Wario Land eventually proved popular enough in its own right to launch its own series.

Wario, having been kicked out of Mario's castle in his first appearance, decides, in his eternal greed, to search for a statue stolen by the nefarious Captain Syrup and the Black Sugar Gang. This would normally involve questing for hidden treasures and collecting as many coins as he can possibly amass along the way.

Here, Wario decides he doesn't want to do any work, so he glitches out the map and uses a jet hat to corrupt the game's memory. After reaching an otherwise unreachable debug menu, he sets up a skip to the end of the game and demands his prize.

As this movie may be confusing to watch, reading the author's comments is recommended. The author, McHazard, has also completed another run of Wario Land that avoids heavy glitches.

Gods is a game about someone who wants to become a god and gain immortality. This is a delicate and paradoxical issue, because temporal immortality can be bought at just about every shop in this game, but the hero still dies numerous times.

Another fun aspect is bomb-jumping, which allows both higher jumps and traveling vertically through walls. Almost the whole 2nd half of the game is skipped with this trick! However, it is not verified whether this trick will work on an actual console.

This is the author's latest version, improved by another 132 frames.

Battletoads (1991) is a futuristic beat 'em up game known for its extreme difficulty spread over 16 difficult levels. The mechanics in the game also change drastically from level to level, making the game one of the hardest and most varied for the NES.

In this game, the second most diabolical evil genius in the universe, The Dark Queen, has kidnapped Princess Angelica and Pimple - a battletoad. Rash and Zitz must save them by traveling through the most insane multilevel set of plans ever designed. This includes falling down huge shafts, racing through obstacle courses at breakneck speeds, riding on snakes through a massive maze of spikes, passing through a killer ventilation system, navigating through a missile defense system, climbing a never ending revolving tower, and much much more. Along the way, the Battletoads must also face off against an evil army of robots, genetically engineered rodents, and The Dark Queen herself.

In order to make the game a bit easier, its creators embedded some secret warp zones to skip a few early levels in their entirety. But that simply wasn't good enough for MESHUGGAH, feos & Koh1fds; they decided to travel directly to level 3, where they invent their own warp and skip right to the grand finale. They took a glitch found in this TAS and exploited it even further, to the point where the Dark Queen just gives up and returns Angelica and Pimple, going off to hatch an even more evil plan for next time. The glitch is done by breaking the game execution and sending it right to the game ending.

This run conquers the predecessor movie by 0.84 seconds by using a more accurate core and a newly discovered void jump trick.

In Cosmo Police: Galivan, the player takes the role of the last remaining member of the Cosmo Police. His comrades died while trying to free the planet Cynep from the evil roaming on it. Now the player is the last hope.

This game is a mix between a shooter and a platformer: the player walks through the caves, jumps over obstacles and shoots everything in sight. Well, at least if he has a weapon: at the beginning he is unarmed and can only kick or punch. He has to find pyramids which were dropped by his dead colleagues (also sometimes from killed aliens), which grant an armor piece, more life energy and a weapon. When the player finds a pyramid, the weapon gets upgraded for a limited amount of time.

However, biggyboy & usedpizza exploit a glitch performed in the "alien world" portion of the first stage, during the transition of the first elevator (read the submission comments as well as this post for more details). Therefore, they reach a time of just 3 minutes and 3 seconds, being 944 frames faster than AmaizumiUni in the previous run.

Final Fantasy III was the second of two Final Fantasy NES games to be released only in Japan, leading to the fourth game in the series being released to the rest of the world as Final Fantasy II. The game brings back the experience point system from the first game while changing up the character jobs formula by allowing the player to change a character's class mid-game as well as acquire new and advanced classes.

In this movie, the author, AmaizumiUni, abuses a bug that causes character inventory to overflow, corrupting the game's memory and triggering the credits early.

Kirby's Adventure is a colorful game that's very long for a NES title. However, a bug was discovered which caused unpredictable results (including triggering the credits) upon using the Stone power while entering the water.

This movie saves 9 frames from its predecessor, thanks to better lag reduction due to interrupting movement.

In this game, you control a kiwi bird and rescue other kiwi birds trapped within the level. There are numerous warps, used to cut this game many minutes short of its expected completion time.

The ceiling and wall physics are very similar to Bubble Bobble, which means some of them can be passed through when you wouldn't expect it. In addition to this there is a glitch that sends you through the floor, saving a lot of time in the final stages.

RobynS improves the previous run by 5.31 seconds, thanks to better use of the glitches, better optimisation and better luck manipulation.

Mega Man is the first game in the famous series that now comprises games on many different systems as well as several television shows and comic books.

While the other run of this game uses lots of tricks to reach the ending impressively quickly, pirohiko and FinalFighter decided it just wasn't fast enough. In this run, they manipulate an object to appear which allows them to execute arbitrary code and warp to the credits, all using only controller input. For an advanced explanation of how it works, check out the submission text.

The guy with an infinite supply of ammo and insatiable bloodlust is back! Known as Probotector II: Return of the Evil Forces in Europe, this game is, implicitly, Contra 2. Without the 2.

This movie is 27.06 seconds faster than the previous run due to a new trick that allows the final boss to be completely skipped in a blaze of glitchy glory. For more information, please read the submission comments.

We also have a run that uses two players, but forgoes the final level glitch.

While decidedly not the same game, the Super Mario Bros. games on the NES are similar enough in game mechanics and controls that all four of them can be played at once with the same input.

This second version of the quad-run utilizes the credits glitch found in the newest Super Mario Bros. 3 run. As such, the focus is now on finishing Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels as fast as possible, allowing Super Mario Bros. 3 to entertain while waiting for the other three games to progress. The run also features an ending that may surprise you.

If you like this movie, you may want to check out some other movies in which multiple games are played simultaneously with one controller.

This movie has been played back and verified on console during SGDQ 2016.

Award - NES TAS of 2014
Super Mario Bros 3 is a very famous game for the NES. There are normally two main ways to beat it: the quick way using warp whistles to skip worlds, and the longer way which goes through all the worlds. However, thanks to some esoteric memory corruption involving glitched pipe travel, it's possible to jump right into the princess's room in under three minutes! Bowser is never seen in this run at all.

This run gets to World 7-1 as quickly as possible to perform the glitch, and some unusual moves are done with enemy spawns and positions to get the glitch to work. See the authors' comments for some more details.

There are also author subtitles provided with the emulator movie file and primary encode to explain some of the key differences in this run.

Watch this run on a real NES. And here is how human beings perform the same glitch in real time.

In this game, you're an armor-clad knight with a big sword. You collect gems to bribe a red knight, kill evil beasts and rescue several "distressed damsels".

This movie, an improvement of 76 seconds over the previous, takes advantage of a glitch that allows you to re-enter the first map and substitute the last few levels with the first levels. There is also a slightly longer movie that does not use this trick.

Not only was Castlevania: Symphony of the Night the first installment of the Castlevania series on PSX but also the first PSX game to have a published run here. Follow Dracula's son Alucard as he glitches through the castle on a quest to end his father's life.

ForgoneMoose and sockfolder, by corrupting the save data, manage to corrupt the memory and go straight to the ending, totally skipping Richter and the whole second castle.

A 100% run covering the whole castle is also available here. If you prefer the main character to have muscular bare arms and to pray to the rain gods to defeat bosses, you may enjoy the Richter version. If you want to see a run on Replay mode that can skip many cutscenes, see this run. A run with clear save without memory corruption is also available here.

This game (along with Pocket Monsters: Red) is the Japanese version of the first generation of Pokémon games and the first ever Pokémon game.

This run, a ten frame improvement over the previous version, abuses a glitch that was fixed in later releases of Pocket Monsters (Pokémon) that allows a player to warp freely through the world. Victory is achieved in a matter of minutes with this route. Normally, the game takes well over an hour at the fastest to finish.

To see a more substantial run of the first generation of Pokémon, watch this movie. For a less substantial run (which also demonstrates that they didn't fix all the glitches in later versions), watch this one.

Note: This movie requires VBA rerecording v20, as it does not sync on any other version.

Ys: The Vanished Omens is the first in a long series of role-playing games. Young swordsman Adol Christin has arrived in the town of Minea, only to find that a great evil is sweeping the land. He must seek out the six books of Ys and use the knowledge they contain to defeat the evil forces.

But after our hero visits a nearby shop, the shopkeeper decides he likes him and gives him his personal copies of all the books of Ys to complete his quest.

In this run, JohnUK89 improves upon the previous run by 21 frames by walking further down the screen, which makes going into the menu unnecessary.

While Chrono Trigger (1995) usually takes days to complete, Crono decided he'd rather not have to sit through all the unnecessary stuff, like long cutscenes, unskippable boss fights and key plot events, so he did it in three minutes instead.

The 18-minute improvement comes from utilizing mid-frame resets which were recently implemented in lsnes.

One of the best (and best known) shooters of the 16-bit era, Contra 3: The Alien Wars forgoes any semblance of plot devices in favor of good old fashioned shooting and platforming with some tough as nails bosses, especially in this, the hardest mode.

Apparently not happy with an already amazing movie, Cpadolf felt the need to go on yet another black op, optimizing his distortions of space and time on the way to a 173 frame improvement.

This movie uses a 'warping' glitch to complete the game. There is also the 2-player version, which does not.

Dragon View is a side-scrolling role-playing video game released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in November 1994. Released in Japan as Super Drakkhen and otherwise known as Drakkhen II, it is meant to be a prequel to Drakkhen although it bears little resemblance to its predecessor. It uses the same pseudo-3D overworld system for which the series is most famous. Other features of Dragon View are its side-view action role-playing game (RPG) hybrid gameplay (used when exploring more detailed areas such as towns and dungeons), its well-translated first person storyline, and its emphasis on player-driven undirected exploration.

In this run, Khaz makes the game realize how boring it really is, and has it jump straight to the credits roughly halfway through the intended story. A side effect of this particular glitch is the cutscene after the credits getting glitched out and having the main character walk in place, forever.

More information on how this was achieved can be found in the submission notes.

EarthBound, also known as Mother 2, is a great RPG, designed by Shigesato Itoi in 1994-1995. It is best described as "random", but in a good way. The game has a great emphasis on humor; indeed, many things in the game are almost caricatured, from subplots to characters. It also has a versatile soundtrack.

Pirohiko improved the previous TAS by almost 5 minutes by resetting at precisely the right time to corrupt the SRAM and skip most of the game, including the credits.

Kirby Super Star is normally a fairly long game split into a bunch of minigames, as the following run at TASVideos shows. However, in the Japanese version of the game, a glitch can be exploited on ladders that allows the player to basically take over the game's inner workings.

This run first goes to The Great Cave Offensive, since it has the first ladder that can be reached from a clean save. For many more technical details, read the author's submission comments.

This is the 4th published movie in a category of impressively fast Super Mario World TASes. It beats the game by jumping to the credits from one of the two levels available from the start, Yoshi's Island 2. This happens because a glitch involving eating a Charging Chuck allows manipulating the code being executed by the game using only controller input.

This run is 0.16 seconds faster than Masterjun's previous movie. This improvement comes mostly from kicking the green shell forwards by touching it while Yoshi is ascending instead of eating it after spitting out the fireballs, which allows to spit out the fireballs much further before getting the green shell.

For more movies like this, see this list of TASes that execute arbitrary code.

Using a similar glitch, Masterjun has also used mere controller input to embed his own games into Super Mario World itself.

This is a quick completion of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

Here, the author, Masterjun, abuses a glitch that causes Yoshi's tongue to extend infinitely. This confuses the game and causes it to jump to the SNES CPU registers and start executing arbitrary code, which triggers the credits.

There is also a run without game-breaking glitches and a 100% run.

Exploiting this glitch instead of a glitch that results in corruption of the egg list saved 1:19.26 over the previous movie.

Super Metroid is a platform game and a follow-up to Metroid II. Like the previous games in the series, it is not divided into separate levels; the planet Zebes is an open world which Samus traverses back and forth. This world is divided into rooms separated with doors which must be shot to be opened. Shooting is also used to open up secret passages, some of which contain nifty bonuses, but finding most of them is required to proceed in the game.

With a new moonwalking technique, this improves the previous speedrun by 4.99 seconds.

SNES Zelda completed in a very quick manner. The trick that is used to cut completion time by so much is holding left+up+right while entering a corridor or staircase, allowing Link to clip through the wall and walk out of bounds.

This movie is an astonishing minute and a half faster than the preceding version thanks to some new glitches.

- Corrupts save data
- Genre: RPG
Wizardry V: Heart of the Maelstrom is an RPG from the well-known Wizardry series of games. Normally, these games are very long. However, in keeping with the TASVideos tradition of making long RPG runs short, this run reaches the ending in half a minute through extensive glitching of the save data. See the author's comments for more information.

In this run, pirohiko improves his previous glitched TAS by 39.83 seconds.

For more Wizardry runs, see the first game, the second game, and the third game.

If you want more information available when the run is playing, see the author's own encode with memory watch on YouTube.

Anubis II (read: "Anubis, the Second") is a fast-paced platformer by Data Design Interactive, the creators of the infamous Ninjabread Man. The evil spirit Mumm'hotep has plunged Egypt into darkness, and Anubis II, the guardian of the tombs, sets out to stop him!

But it seems that this quest is much easier than it appears. After completely skipping going through the starting gate, Anubis decides to play a bunch of minigames. This somehow causes his quest to become completed. There was much rejoicing.

Ikachan is a game created by Pixel during the development of Cave Story. You control a squid who needs to help the sea creatures who have been trapped in a cavern.

Fortunately, Ikachan befriends a magical Attack Star that allows him to just simply leave and abandon those losers.
