8 Eyes (1990) is a Castlevania clone that was made by Thinking Rabbit, the originators of Sokoban. But, unlike Castlevania, this game is set in a post-apocalyptic future in which eight nuclear explosions almost destroyed Earth. The game features two characters—the human Orin and his falcon Cutrus—in either 1- or 2-player mode. Cutrus can attack enemies, hit switches, collect items, and generally do all sorts of useful things.
The game allows the player to recover the eight jewels in any order. The player can save time in the boss fights by choosing the optimal sequence.

A Simple Platformer Game is a homebrew NES platformer that was created for the 2020 NESMaker Byte-Off. As the name suggests, it is a simple platforming game, but one that appears to be a little unstable. The game is built around the concept of a "kill screen", where the game will eventually become unbeatable or even literally unplayable when played long enough. But does the game really have a kill screen? You'll have to play it to find out.
Cephla completes the game as fast as possible in their quest to get to the fabled kill screen.

A Week of Garfield is a 1989 Famicom exclusive based on the comic strip character Garfield. In the game you play through levels which take place on each day of the week on your search to find Odie.
This game is surprisingly hard. Playing the game without dying (which results in a game over since you only have one life), let alone not losing any health, is extremely challenging. At times the screen is nearly filled with enemies and requires frame specific movement to avoid taking damage.
But don't worry, goofydylan8 manages to make this game look like a piece of cake and beat the console world record by 4 minutes.

Adventures of Lolo (1989) was the first game of the Eggerland series that received a Western release. Interestingly, the series was developed by HAL Laboratory, who also created the Kirby series, and Eggerland protagonists Lolo and Lala make cameo appearances in Kirby games as Lololo and Lalala.
The goal of the game is to collect all of the hearts in every stage and then get the ball from the chest to open the door to the next room. Though it may seem simplistic, it remains a truly well-made puzzle. Battletoads (1991) is a futuristic beat 'em up game known for its extreme difficulty spread over 16 difficult levels. The mechanics in the game also change drastically from level to level, making the game one of the hardest and most varied for the NES.
In this game, the second most diabolical evil genius in the universe, The Dark Queen, has kidnapped Princess Angelica and Pimple - a battletoad. Rash and Zitz must save them by traveling through the most insane multilevel set of plans ever designed. This includes falling down huge shafts, racing through obstacle courses at breakneck speeds, riding on snakes through a massive maze of spikes, passing through a killer ventilation system, navigating through a missile defense system, climbing a never ending revolving tower, and much much more. Along the way, the Battletoads must also face off against an evil army of robots, genetically engineered rodents, and The Dark Queen herself.
In order to make the game a bit easier, its creators embedded some secret warp zones to skip a few early levels in their entirety. But that simply wasn't good enough for MESHUGGAH, feos & Koh1fds; they decided to travel directly to level 3, where they invent their own warp and skip right to the grand finale. They took a glitch found in this TAS and exploited it even further, to the point where the Dark Queen just gives up and returns Angelica and Pimple, going off to hatch an even more evil plan for next time. The glitch is done by breaking the game execution and sending it right to the game ending.
This run conquers the predecessor movie by 00:00.85 seconds by using a more accurate core and a newly discovered void jump trick.

Two other toads, Rash and Zitz, attempt to rescue them and defeat the Dark Queen.
This run has two players and does not use warps.

This is an improvement of 56.28 seconds over the previous movie, mainly thanks to a new trick in Area 12 where if damage is taken from an enemy at the same frame one would normally take damage from a barrier, one'd pass through the barrier, assuming the player's position is correct.

Simon is taking another shot at this castle, but feeling horrible for the destruction he caused last time, he is now trying to respect Dracula's property and leave the place untouched (even if his intention is to kill the count).
As a minimalist variation of a pacifist goal, this movie does not contain any destruction in the levels: candles and walls are left intact, items stay untouched, and no enemy is harmed — with the exception of the bosses, who are killed mercilessly with the help of the "critical hit" glitch.
With Simon sneaking by most enemies with no subweapons and only his leather whip, this ends up being quite a stealthy run.

Celeste Mario’s Zap & Dash! is a ROM hack of Super Mario Bros., released in July 2023 as a precursor to the work-in-progress Mario Machina. Described by its main creator w7n as a “hastily done minihack”, it is the most technically impressive hack of this game by far, with heavy modifications to almost the entire game engine. The player progresses through a mostly linear world, using walljumps, Celeste-style dashes and various features in the level design to assist movement. The main collectables in the game are moons, which serve as a measure of completion as well as increasing the maximum number of dashes the player is able to store.

Clash at Demonhead is a complex game to say the least. There are over 40 levels in the game, and they are all connected to each other. In the network of levels, the player must control Billy "Big Bang" Blitz to find 6 medallions and then rescue the kidnapped professor. This is no simple task. To make things even harder for a (tool-assisted) speedrunner, there are items available that greatly increase the player's speed, but in return cost money. This means that the route and strategy must be carefully planned.
This movie certainly does not lack speed or complexity, and is especially entertaining if you have played the game and know how hard it is. In this run, Randil improves the previous movie by over 4 minutes primarily thanks to a new trick that allows you to use the Power Boots for twice as long. The city of St. Canard is plagued by an unseen crime wave. The intelligence agency S.H.U.S.H. suspects that the shady organization F.O.W.L. and their valued operative Steelbeak are its causes. The caped superhero Darkwing has made quite some enemies in the criminal circles thanks to his past heroic deeds, and now the entire city has to pay for that. Naturally, the valiant duck is determined to travel through the dangerous streets of St. Canard, defeat his foes, and foil Steelbeak's plans.
Darkwing Duck is a side-scrolling platform game featuring the titular character from the Disney television series. The gameplay is similar to Duck Tales, also resembling Mega Man games in many ways. Darkwing's default weapon is a gas gun; special adapters that modify its functions can be collected during exploration. By using his cape, Darkwing is able to deflect some of the enemy projectiles. Weapons can be changed via a sub-screen.
For a "pacifist" type of completion, this run avoids killing enemies (they might also have dropped health refills, so health management is mandatory), and to offer maximum variety in addition to the any% version, minimizes the use of subweapons (yet to save a single enemy's life, a single arrow is used). It offers some fresh action and manipulation on bosses, but can't be done entirely along with pacifist, so DreamYao has to use a single arrow to save a single enemy's life.
This is a 827 frame improvement over the previous movie.

Darkwing Duck (1992) is a platformer somewhat similar to Mega Man in gameplay and difficulty. The arrow gun allows the player to climb up walls and use creative shortcuts so that the absolute shortest route can be taken. In case you are wondering why the character keeps on jumping so much, it is because he has to wait a short amount of time before being able to walk. With constant jumping these stops can be avoided.
This run by DreamYao, J.Y, and aiqiyou saves 16.39 seconds over the previous run thanks to improved jumping and arrow techniques. For more details, you can read the authors' comments.

Double Dragon II: The Revenge is a beat'em-up game starring Billy (or Bimmy, depending on the game version) and Jimmy Lee in a quest to get revenge on a gang for killing Billy's girlfriend. Their journey starts on city streets, but it eventually goes to a variety of places like a helicopter, a dark forest, a haunted mansion, and a final fight bordering on the supernatural. You must play the hardest difficulty, Supreme Master, in order to reach the true final boss.
One interesting feature of the game is that some very powerful moves can only be used from a crouching position, usually after landing from a jump or getting up from a knockdown. This is why you see the player jump so frequently.
This run by Xipo plays the game with only 1 player. It is slower than the two-player run largely because it can't use tricks like the two players hitting each other with flying knees. However, there are still some interesting tricks and strategies in this movie well worth watching.

Gimmick! (1992) is another gem from Sunsoft, the company that brought us Ufouria and Journey to Silius. It was only released in Japan and Scandinavian countries, but eventually achieved something of a cult status thanks to its refined gameplay, as well as exceptional music and graphic design.
The plot follows a green toy on a quest to rescue a little girl from the clutch of other toys, who were rightfully upset at her forsaking them in favor of our protagonist. What these other toys can't do, however, is conjure stars to use them both as projectiles and very effective transportation devices!
This venture between Aglar, Hotarubi and Samsara improves the previous movie by 00:46.87 seconds thanks to a new zipping glitch that skips most of Stage 5 and a new clip that skips most of Stage 6. In this run, adelikat picks up maximum speed upgrades and has fun with perfect reflexes, much like the previous movie. That is certainly something nice to do, because the game scrolls automatically and the player cannot affect the speed. However, the point of this movie is not just to beat this game as fast as possible, but rather to do all kinds of unpredictable and awe-inspiring things rarely seen in any TAS — without losing time. See for yourself.
This is probably one of the best illustrations on how to create art out of a simplistic and otherwise uninteresting game to watch.
What is also different about this movie is an extra warp which significantly shortens the game, and the use of a new tool (input macro) as described in the submission text. Bots are occasionally used to generate pseudorandom input while still avoiding death.

Mega Man is the first game in the famous series that now comprises games on many different systems as well as several television shows and comic books.
While the other run of this game uses lots of tricks to reach the ending impressively quickly, pirohiko and FinalFighter decided it just wasn't fast enough. In this run, they manipulate an object to appear which allows them to execute arbitrary code and warp to the credits, all using only controller input. For an advanced explanation of how it works, check out the submission text.

Mega Man 3 (USAのロックマン3) is the first game in the Mega Man / Rockman series to introduce sliding (though the ability to charge the Mega Buster would have to wait until game 4). It also introduced Rush the robotic dog, who provides the abilities of Rush Coil, Rush Marine, and Rush Jet. Furthermore, after you beat the 8 robot masters, the game makes you revisit modified versions of four stages to fight the Doc Robots, who imitate the robot masters from Mega Man 2. This set a precedent in the Mega Man series to have additional stages between the main robot masters and Dr. Wily's fortress.
This run completes the game about 00:20.62 seconds faster than the previous movie thanks to a new route, more glitches, and better optimization.
This run was console verified using micro500's TASLink replay device (with a window mode of 3.5 ms).

Metal Force is an unlicensed game developed by Open Corp. (who also made Buzz and Waldog) and released in 1994 in South Korea. It is of surprisingly solid quality for an unlicensed title. It controls similarly to classic Mega Man games, except you have two different weapons which you can switch between and upgrade by collecting power-ups from enemies. Aside from that, it is a linear adventure comprised of 7 missions, with a boss battle at the end of each. The stages of each mission are quite expansive and packed with enemies and obstacles.
This game was run as part of TASVideos' Dream Team Contest 5, and this TAS was built on a combination of multiple submissions of said contest - hence the high number of authors.
In this TAS, the authors make expansive use of the weapons and the various boosts in order to beat the game in 13 minutes and 9.6 seconds.

This is a full completion of Metroid, meaning that all items (100%) were collected.
This is a 8 minute 16 second improvement over the previous movie by Zoizite. Much of the improvement comes from using the Up+A restart sequence, though many new shortcuts and optimizations also save time.

At first glance, Mickey Mousecapade may seem like a simple game. However, it's actually fairly challenging. You guide Mickey and Minnie through five levels, presumably to save Alice from the Alice in Wonderland stories. (The plot doesn't get much explanation.)
This movie by Alyosha improves the previous run by 00:06.37 seconds, largely due to route changes in Stages 1 and 5.
