A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia (1989) is a popular, whimsical game in which a shapeshifting blob (named Blobert) from the planet Blobolonia teams up with an Earth boy to overcome obstacles on both planets and to defeat Blobolonia's evil emperor.

This movie is ~11 seconds faster than the previous version by the same author, due to better control of the boy's acceleration.

This extremely difficult game is about Gomez Addams, who must rescue his wife and other family members from evil kidnappers. In addition to this, he has to collect one million dollars to be able to get through the security door in the basement. The game is very badly programmed and you have to avoid objects by afar to avoid getting hit.

The Adventures of Bayou Billy (1989) contains a trinity of genres: beat 'em up (like Streets of Rage), sniping (like part of Golgo 13), and car racing (like Rad Racer). In the game, 'Bayou' Billy West fights his way through Louisiana en route to New Orleans in order to save his kidnapped girlfriend, the luscious Annabelle Lane.

The American version of this game is a lot more difficult than the Japanese one (Mad City), although this video makes it seem easy.

The goal in the game is to collect all hearts in every stage, and when that is done, get the ball in the chest to open the door to the next room.

You wouldn't know he's a marine, since he doesn't wear a marine uniform, or long pants, or much of anything when he transforms into a giant strong man twice his size. Amagon's goals appear to be to (1) slaughter the majority of the wildlife on the island, (2) cover up the existence of dinosaurs and aliens by massacring them, and (3) flee the scene on a rescue boat.

Arkanoid (1987) strongly resembles the arcade game Breakout (1976). In Arkanoid, the paddle is actually a spaceship, and the bricks are space walls. The goal of the game is to break through the space walls and defeat the villainous Doh in order to escape from the space labyrinth.

This incredible TAS of Arkanoid, made by Baxter, inspires awe in a manner comparable to the Gradius movie. No ball is ever lost, even though three balls are juggled in every level where possible.

Astyanax (1990) is the story of a studly 16-year-old boy named Astyanax who is summoned to the world of Remlia in order to save the enchantress Princess Rosebud from the evil wizard Blackhorn, who wants to rule the world.

Astyanax is a somewhat clumsy game. For one, Astyanax is twice as big as he appears, and so he is easily hit unless one plays carefully. The controls are also very bad. The sum of these factors is that it's a difficult game to play, but that's part of what makes this movie interesting—especially for those who have played this game.

Batman: Return of the Joker (1991) is the sequel to the first Batman game for the NES. Being one of the later NES titles, it shows surprisingly good and fluid visuals, fullsize art, and decent sound — all without slowdown issues!

The gameplay has undergone some changes compared to its predecessor. A welcome addition to it is a slide movement, similar to the one in the Mega Man series. A not-so-welcome addition is that half the stages are autoscrolling, and there are no close combat weapons now.

The Battle of Olympus (オリュンポスの戦い) is set in ancient Greece. A mortal man named Orpheus receives help from the gods and nymphs in his quest to save his lover Helene from Hades. People often compare this game with Zelda 2 because of its similar gameplay.

This movie is 9:11 faster than Arc's version, mostly because of the utilization of a gameplay-altering glitch: pressing Left+Right simultaneously in order to make Orpheus move with almost unlimited velocity growth. The trick is documented at Battle of Olympus Tricks.

The route used in this movie is decided by a few things the hero (Orpheus) must do:

  • Collect three fragments of love in order to activate the Tartarus entry.
  • Get a key to access the second fragment's location.
  • Get the Eyeball of Graeae to see invisible doors (to access the first fragment's location).
  • Get a sword in Peloponnesus. It is needed to kill the three-headed guardian with respawning heads (Cerberus) in Tartarus.
  • Collect 60 olives in order to buy the ocarina, which will be needed to cross the sea to get to Crete and Tartarus.
  • Get a harp in order to call Pegasus. It makes the route faster.

A rare instance of a Japanese-made NES game based on a U.S.-originated comic book, Bucky O'Hare (1992) provides a player with a good combination of platforming action similar to Mega Man, an interesting plot, and convincing production values. You can play as one of the five unique characters, which you are able to select freely at any time, after saving them from the clutches of the Toad Empire. Each character has special abilities required to take advantage of in order to pass through the game's numerous variably designed stages, ranging from one-screen puzzle rooms to autoscrolling shmups.

Interesting fact about this game is that Konami used to implement an unconventional way of piracy protection, in this particular case by making each hit or "wrong" collision in the game result in an instant death if you play it illegitimately. Apparently, this was how a large amount of people were used to play it in pre-emulation era, without even realizing Konami's little sabotage.

This movie by AnS is set up in a fashion that imitates this known handicap by playing the game in hard mode (accessing it through a password), where every hit counts as death. Other than that, it also improves the previous movie by 2 minutes 48.7 seconds, using several major glitches and a lot of small tricks explained in great detail in the author's comments.

Castlevania II: Simon's Quest is the story of Simon Belmont's horrible weekend without sleep. Two years after defeating Dracula, Simon is physically weakened by Dracula's curse. Simon must gather Dracula's remains and incinerate them at the ruins of Castlevania in order to end the curse.

The timeunit count for this movie is 03:01:08, which is 9 "minutes" better than the previous version by Walker Boh. The actual movie is 27.35 seconds faster because of significant improvements in two mansions.
It also abuses the falling-through-floor glitch, which is insanely difficult to perform.

There are several items that are required for the completion of the game, and you can't buy them without killing a certain amount of monsters; thus, this movie has some running back and forth in order to collect hearts. There's also the factor that shops are open only at daytime and monsters are twice as evil at nighttime... Hence, there is some necessary waits that may appear as sloppy, but are not.

Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (originally known as 悪魔城伝説 or Akumajō Densetsu, meaning "Legend of the Demon Castle") is the story of Trevor Belmont's battle against Dracula from the times before Simon's battle in Castlevania. In this complex and difficult game, there are three playable allies whom Trevor can recruit: Alucard (Dracula's son), Grant DaNasty (a pirate captain), and Sypha Belnades (a mystic warlord).

This game has a technically high-quality soundtrack because it uses a VRC6 sound chip that works in the Japanese Famicom but not in the NES. Thus, the movie was made with the Japanese version of the game instead of the USA version.

This movie takes the path that recruits Sypha. There's also a Grant path movie and an Alucard path movie.

A game based on the show Samurai Pizza Cats. Five characters are available, but one (Batcat) is used extensively because his ability of flight leads to many shortcuts.

This game has a glitch enabling one-frame boss fights. To quote the author: If the team leader executes a level three ninpo attack on the first frame of combat, the boss is dead. Right there, dead, even the ones that don't show up immediately. As pulling this off requires your weapon to be maxed out, this saves anywhere from a great deal of time (first level) to a little bit (last level).

This movie was recorded with a bad ROM dump (b1); see the author's submission notes for more information regarding this.

Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers 2 is quite an improvement over the original Chip 'n Dale in terms of graphics and a whole lot of other things. Thankfully, the original game's solid controls haven't been changed. The plot of this game is that Fat Cat has stolen the Pharaoh's Urn and wants to use its power (for evil purposes, of course).

This is a 18.55 second improvement over the previous movie.

Clash at Demonhead is a complex game to say the least. There are over 40 levels in the game, and they are all connected to each other. In the network of levels the player must find 6 medallions and then rescue the kidnapped professor. This is no simple task. To make things even harder for a (tool-assisted) speedrunner, there are items available that greatly increase the player's speed, but in return cost money. This means that the route and strategy must be carefully planned.

This movie certainly does not lack speed or complexity. The movie is especially entertaining if you have played the game and know how hard it is.

For example, targets and swimmers are deliberately missed to reduce score-counting at the end of levels. Altogether, this is 54 seconds faster than the previous version.

The arrow gun allows the player to climb up walls and use creative shortcuts so that the absolute shortest route can be taken. It features a hero named Victar, who can easily jump on a tall tree (and sometimes over it, since he can't jump much lower) and is willing to defeat the evil demon that conquered the world. The key to defeating him is Victar's sword, which is conveniently broken into pieces that must be collected over the span of the game.

Destiny of an Emperor was Capcom’s first RPG, released in 1989―90, and is based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

The battling style of this game can be described like Final Fantasy meets Pokémon; your team of warriors versus the opposing team of warriors, and any opponents freed from their posts can be later picked up in the wilds and converted to your side!

Dragon Fighter is a cross-over between a platformer and a shooter. It starts out in platform mode, where you can collect dragon points. When you have enough, you can transform into a powerful dragon, turning the game into a autoscrolling shooter. The game scrolls slowly in this mode, but the dragon moves fast.

By continuously switching between the two modes, it allows the player to go as fast as possible, which makes an otherwise boring game interesting.

Selected comments from the author:
The second Dragon Warrior game beaten as fast as possible.

Dragon Warrior is an epic RPG series which now spans 8 games across many systems. The second game greatly expands on the first to include a party of three heroes (all descendents of Erdrick and the hero of DW1) and battles that may include many enemies.
The world is much bigger and there are many big dungeons to explore as well. Luckily there are new abilities and items to make this easier. Enemies can randomly drop items when defeated and there is a lottery which is the precursor to the casinos which appear in each later DW game. Finally, you might notice that many of the enemies in this game appear in later games, particularly DW8.

Dragon Warrior 3 completed quickly by using a bizarre glitch that allows the author to fill his inventory with useful items, manipulate his stats, and even add places to his return list! This allows most of the game to be skipped.

The author has left detailed comments explaining this glitch.

This is a non-glitched run of Dragon Warrior 3, now under 2 hours long.

This game is known in the TAS world as being a pain to play due to the RNG (random number generator) being much harder to manipulate than most other games. As a result, seemingly random actions throughout the game are actually intentional manipulation of the RNG to ensure favourable outcomes, such as avoiding monsters or good battle outcomes.

To give you an idea of how surprising this time is to most players, the previous run is about 24 minutes longer than this one. Even before that, any run that was under 3 hours long was deemed to be very difficult to perform.

Dragon Warrior 4 is a very long RPG. During the planning phase, it was expected that this movie would be 5 hours long. Suffice to say the result was a pleasant surprise.

The author intentionally kills off his party in order to save some travel time.

Duck Tales is a classic game in which Scrooge has to collect treasures from all over the world. Some of the levels are not completely straightforward, and collecting items is sometimes necessary before proceeding. His cane also doubles as an almighty pogo stick that can be used in various ways, which makes jumping a lot more fun.

This is the fourth TAS of Duck Tales. This time, due to a bug in the Moon level found by HHS, it is almost a minute shorter! Other minor tricks here and there contributed an additional few seconds of improvement.

TODO: describe this movie better

A new TAS of Duck Tales 2. adelikat completes this new version of Duck Tales 2 in a little more than 5 seconds faster than the previous movie by himself and Guybrush

Quote from Exim (the author of the first Duck Tales 2 TAS):
This one has the "bad" end. (not the worst)
There are 3 endings: no money earned; earned some money and found all 7 map pieces. I'm thinking about doing the best end but I don't know if this would be interesting because I'd have to visit some places twice and it would be a lot longer.

Eggerland is a predecessor of the NES Adventures of Lolo games, and in certain ways, it has much more features than Adventures of Lolo 1. The author has explained the game (and the movie) very well, so we recommend reading his comments.
This movie abuses a couple of the game bugs in a surprising way.

Note that this is a Famicom Disk System game. Read What is FDS for more information.
