In a shocking twist of events, Bowser kidnaps Peach inside her own castle. Mario shows up and rains on Bowser's parade by collecting all 120 stars and winning in record time.

Numerous bugs are exploited in order to speed up Mario's progress and the physics engine is abused to its fullest.

This is an improvement of 18:08.33 over the previous movie by Rikku.

If you prefer to see the game beaten in the fastest time, then watch the "0 Stars" run.

On this site, we make perfect movies, and then we surpass them. Of course, if we can surpass them, they were not perfect in the first place, but who would have known?

When "perfection" is defined as "as fast as possible", it requires some sacrifices. Indeed, this movie sacrifices a lot in the playability of the game. Full of tricks to pass through walls, tricks to avoid mandatory battles, tricks to pass through enemies relatively unharmed, tricks to acquire weapon refills in little time — there is very little in this movie left that resembles normal playing. Even death is used as a viable playing strategy that saves time. All of the tricks are still performed by the means of mere controller input, even though significant portions of the input were calculated by a computer program.

This movie is a considerable improvement of 3:04.39 to the previous movie; this is mainly due to a new technique which tricks the game into calling an 'end of level' object.

Of course, upon watching this movie, one does have to question something... is it Mega Man saving the world? Or Dr. Wily trying to save it from absolute destruction?

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992) was the game that introduced the Super Dash Attack. The ability, referred to as Spin Dash in later games, has become one of the most beloved features of the series and, indeed, one of the most prominent features of the speedrunning scene as a whole.

In this exhilarating movie, Aglar speeds his way through this classic's varied acts making good use of Spin Dashes to finish them in record time. The author also controls Tails—Sonic's two-tailed foxy buddy—to allow for even faster routes and making shorter work of bosses.

This is an improvement of 50.76 seconds over the previous movie, thanks to better routes and general optimization as explained in the author's comments.

This is the 10th published movie of Super Mario World that beats the game by clearing 11 of the 96 exits, the shortest route intended by the game developers. Of all the previous movies, not one had obsoleted its predecessor by more than 15 seconds. This movie sets a new record by beating the previous movie by 22.68 seconds and clocking in under 10 minutes. Ironically, Mario dies in the process.

The authors of this movie have found (more) new glitches to save time. The notable differences in gameplay are:

  • Plays a level which was not previously played (Yoshi's Island 1)
  • Skips Iggy's Castle
  • Optimizes Bowser fight
We recommend reading the author's comments to understand how the new glitches are used in this movie.

There are also movies of this game that trigger the credits early, clear all 96 exits, clear as many exits as possible as small Mario, and write a program using the game's code.

Although the length of this movie is 20:09.98 when timed with our standard method, applying the timing method used by most Zelda speedrunners (until last hit on Ganon) would result in a final time of 16:57.69. It's important to note this so that there's no confusion about which runs are faster than the others.

In this TAS of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the author aims to beat the game as quickly as possible. He achieves this by exploiting a large sequence break which involves "tricking" the game into warping Link directly from the Deku Tree (the first dungeon) to Ganon's Castle. Child Link then goes on conquering the whole castle without a single thought about becoming an adult beforehand.

Despite how quickly this game can be beaten these days, this run is almost two minutes faster than its predecessor thanks to new tricks at the Deku Tree and tower collapse sequence as well as many small improvements throughout the run.

This TAS was done using the Japanese version of the game. The reason for this is that the text is significantly faster than in the English version, which means that far less time is spent waiting for text boxes and cut scenes to end before getting back to the action.

The author's notes explain in great detail many of the things done in this TAS, which may be confusing to those who aren't familiar with Ocarina of Time speedrunning. Reading them is strongly advised.

Sonic bounces around surprisingly fast. The lack of Spin Dash makes the strategy a bit different from that of Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles runs, since preserving your momentum becomes a lot more important. However, this doesn't prevent the author from achieving crazy velocities even with such a significant limitation. In this run, the game is completed without collecting any emeralds.

This is the seventh run of this game, improving on the previous effort by 1:01.58 (of in-game time) with the use of new zips and improved precision.

To see a movie of this game that doesn't take advantage of zips, watch the "no zips" run by Aglar.

Spoiler: hover over the screenshot.

Every second encode link leads to a camhacked version. But don't expect the videos where Sonic is visible offscreen to make more sense than the original ones!

Arguably one of the most well known and well developed SNES hacks in existence, Super Demo World puts Mario into a new realm that spans well beyond his original adventure.

Features of the hack include:

  • the ability to store unconventional items in the reserve box, such as a koopa, springboard, message box, or vine
  • 120 exits in total, including two secret worlds
  • creative and challenging level design, with some puzzle elements thrown in
  • "new" graphics (mostly backgrounds taken from other games, such as Donkey Kong Country 3 and Mega Man X)

In this run, PangaeaPanga improves upon the previous movie by more than five minutes using newly discovered glitches and a slower overworld route, which counterintuitively saves time.

To see a much shorter run completing the minimum number of stages, see this run.

This is a really fast TAS through Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance played as Maxim, who is only available after the game is beaten. Unlike in the glitch-warped run, the protagonist doesn't directly fight Dracula and instead defeats every boss, reaching Dracula the intended way. However, this doesn't stop Maxim from making short work of every boss and sinking into walls wherever he wants.

This category obsoletes the in-bounds Maxim run because, even though they don't have the same goals, out-of-bounds tricks were deemed more entertaining.

McBobX's run in this category saves about 1:50.95 over the previous movie due to route changes and optimization.

Note: This movie starts where the main quest movie left off. We don't usually accept movies beginning from a save, though. Please read our rules to see our reasons.

Disappointed with good movies where characters move just too slowly?

Look no further! In this extremely high-speed run, Mukki demonstrates how to break the sound barrier and why Sonic is the fastest character in the video game universe.

"Thank you for playing Super Mario World! Unfortunately, this trial copy will only let you play for 1.5 minutes."

This is a completely new type of Super Mario World TAS. It beats the game by jumping to the credits from one of the two levels available from the start, Yoshi's Island 2. This happens because a glitch involving stunning a flying question block allows manipulating the code being executed by changing the position of sprites.

This run is 56.50 seconds faster than Masterjun's previous movie. For those who love to read the technical specifics of such runs, there are detailed author's comments about the new method used here. Suffice to say, 8 controllers are required to get this to work.

If you want to see more movies like this, let this post be your guide.

Seven months after this TAS, Masterjun exploited the glitch used here to do more than just trigger the game's end; he used only controller input to embed his own games into Super Mario World itself.

Rockman & Forte (ロックマン&フォルテ), known as Mega Man & Bass in the western world, used to be the last game chronologically released for the original Rockman/Megaman series, until Rockman & Forte Mirai kara no Chōsensha (ロックマン&フォルテ 未来からの挑戦者) was released on the WonderSwan handheld system.

This game bears a striking resemblance to Mega Man 8, not only in style, but in excessive graphic detail. Similarly to Mega Man X4, the player has the option to choose one of two characters to play through. In this run, Rockman is choosen.

This run is 41.64 seconds faster than the previous run, demonstrating that this game is even glitchier than it originally appeared.

There are two more Rockman & Forte runs to watch on this site; featuring completion of the game with Forte as fast as possible and collection of all CDs with Rockman.

X is trying to find the lost Maverick Hunter Zero, who has gone missing since X5. Of course, once found, Zero does most of the dirty work, while X is practically nowhere to be found.

This run completes all of the stages, showing off how nasty every level is on Xtreme difficulty. As always, Zero is much better suited to killing bosses than X. Zero also uses powerups that he wouldn't be able to use in an any% run.

The author, Rolanmen1, also improves the previous movie by 1:47.03 by taking a different route and using a new trick that allows him to skip the totem poles in Ground Scaravich's stage.

If you want to see the game completed as fast as possible, see the any% run.

The TASVideos record movie for Pokémon: Yellow Version uses heavy glitches that lead to Ash cataloging every Pokémon in slightly over a minute. Is there any way to get more ridiculous than that? In this run, using nothing but the Game Boy buttons and tool-assisted precision, the game is made to run an arbitrary program. For details on how this was achieved, see the author's comments.

This movie improves upon its predecessor by never having to leave Ash's room to gain full control of execution flow. However, that movie has a very different kind of payload at the end, and is worth watching as well. Both movies apply the idea that TASing is programming input rather than playing the game. Ever wonder if Mario was actually a ninja wearing blue overalls? Now you know.

This run completes the game after collecting a mere 16 stars. It was originally intended that the player collect a minimum of 70 to finish, but a few bugs allow Mario to pass through doors and barriers that require a minimum number of stars to open.

Mario has a very wide range of skills for mobility and some of the physics of this game are easily abused by an experienced player.

Mega Man 2 is a game that hardly needs any introduction. This movie plays Rockman 2, the Japanese version, which is essentially Mega Man 2 in difficult mode.

This new movie, played by Shinryuu and Bisqwit, is about 25 seconds faster than the previous movie by Morimoto and Finalfighter. Finalfighter has also discovered a large portion of the new tricks in this movie. Major timesavers include:

  • a new route for the first 8 bosses
  • scrolling horizontally when the screen should scroll vertically
  • damage transfer: when a crash bomb explodes, Mega Man can be used to deal damage

See Rockman Tricks and the submission message for in-depth explanation and answers to various questions regarding this movie.

Here is a non-glitched run of the black sheep in the Zelda series. Zelda has been put to sleep by an evil spell, and you must waken her by completing six palaces and then obtaining the Triforce again. Unlike most Zelda games, the action parts are done in a side-scrolling view instead of an overhead view, and there are fewer items to use.

One surprising feature of the TAS route is that magic levels are prioritized over attack levels at the beginning of the game; see the previous submission's comments for more explanation of that choice. This time, the run is improved by nearly two minutes due to different leveling, better optimization, and by skipping the Jump spell. For more details, see the submission comments.

This movie avoids pressing Left and Right at the same time which causes an acceleration bug that can massively glitch the game.

Watch this movie played on a real NES console.

This is a quick completion of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

Here, the author, Masterjun, abuses a glitch that results in corruption of the egg list. This confuses the game and causes it to jump to the SNES CPU registers and start executing arbitrary code, which triggers the credits.

There is also a run without game-breaking glitches and a 100% run.

Exploiting this glitch instead of just using a warp glitch to get to 6-8 quickly saved over 3.5 minutes over the previous movie.

At first there were 70 stars because Bowser demanded it. Then there were 16 stars because MIPS the rabbit demanded it. Then there was 1 star because Bowser's Sub demanded it. Now there are none because the viewers are impatient and demanded the game be quicker.

As with many other runs on this site, the goal of pure speed has resulted in the complete breaking of the game. Very little of the game's normal play remains. If you'd like to see more of what Super Mario 64 offers, see the 120 stars run.

Super Mario 64 has a history of publications on this site. If you wish to see how it unfolded since the beginning, see the page SM64TASHistory. Also, if you have a hankering to see MIPs the rabbit, the 16 stars route has been improved.

This is a hacked version of Sonic the Hedgehog. The title character is replaced by his sidekick, Miles "Tails" Prower. The levels remain unchanged.

There is more than just an appearance change to this game. Tails' abilities remain intact. If you haven't seen Sonic the Hedgehog completed before, you may wish to do so before seeing what a character with flight and a spindash can accomplish.

There is also a run for a Knuckles hack of Sonic the Hedgehog, done by JXQ. It replaces Tails with Knuckles and flying with climbing and gliding.

In this run, Forte is chosen.

sparky takes the game apart with some glitches that allow Forte to zip around in walls. This run is 59.83 seconds faster than the previous run, mostly due to new glitches. Read the author's comments for more details.

There are two more Rockman & Forte runs to watch on this site; featuring completion of the game with Rockman as fast as possible and collection of all CDs with him.

In the revolutionary 3D debut for The Legend of Zelda series, Link must travel around the colorful land of Hyrule and awaken six Sages in order to save it from the evil Ganondorf.

This movie uses a variety of sequence breaks and shortcuts to complete the game in under an hour using a minimal number of inventory and quest items. Of central interest are the ability to glitch through the Door of Time, meaning that no dungeons need to be entered as young Link, and a memory manipulation glitch known as the Reverse Bottle Adventure, allowing the medallions collected from adult Link's dungeons to be pulled out of thin air; therefore the only dungeon that is ever entered in this run is Ganon's Castle.

While this run seems to be only 1:31.26 faster than the predecessor movie, the saving is a bit over 8 minutes. This is due to the fact that the Japanese ROM image used for the previous run had a faster text speed, shortening the cut-scenes by 6.5 minutes.

If you know the cutscenes of this game by memory at this point and would rather watch an encode without them, it's your lucky day!

Note: There are multiple encodes for this run. All encode lists follow this order:

Sonic bounces around surprisingly fast. The lack of Spin Dash makes the strategy a bit different from that of Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles runs, since preserving your momentum becomes a lot more important. However, this doesn't prevent the authors from achieving crazy velocities even with such a significant limitation. In this run, the game is completed without collecting any emeralds.

This is the sixth run of this game, improving on the previous effort by 47.29 seconds with the use of new zips and improved precision.

To see a movie of this game that doesn't take advantage of zips, watch the "no zips" run by Aglar.

EarthBound is a great RPG, designed by Shigesato Itoi in 1994-1995, and is also known by the name Mother 2.

It is best described as "random", in a good way. The game has a great emphasis on a humor, and indeed many things in the game are almost caricatured, from subplots to characters. It also has a versatile soundtrack.

Our description for the previous movie stated, "Although this being a speedrun (tool-assisted at that), most of the plot of the game is intact...". This time around, not so much. Thanks to some collision detection bugs, including one that shows that the Skip Sandwich is a fitting name for the item in ways the developers never intended, the author is able to move around the game's areas freely, completing the bare minimum number of tasks needed to keep the final battle from locking up.

Also unlike the previous movie, this one does use a death as a shortcut. However, the teddy bear survives this time around.

Metroid Super ZeroMission is a Super Metroid hack that is heavily based on the GBA game Metroid: Zero Mission, inspiring modifications of the game engine, graphics, and maps.

Battletoads (1991) is a futuristic beat 'em up known for its graphics and extreme difficulty. The story is that the sexy Dark Queen who wants to rule the universe has kidnapped Princess Angelica and a toad named Pimple. Two other toads, Rash and Zitz, attempt to rescue them and defeat the Dark Queen.

Maybe you thought Battletoads was a game full of amphibians, but it is actually full of bugs. Those beta testers really should have spent a little more time on this game...

In this run, feos and MESHUGGAH beat the previously fastest TAS of this game by 2:22.16, this time using 2 players instead of 1. You will laugh, you will cry, but most of all, you will wonder how in the world they broke this game so much. Do yourself a favor and read the authors' notes.

To see the game broken even further with the use of memory corruption, watch this run.

This movie utilizes all of the tricks found in the Super Mario World tricks section in addition to new recently discovered tricks to beat the previous movie by 48.6 seconds. See the author's comments for more details.

Arguably one of the most well known and well developed SNES hacks in existence, Super Demo World puts Mario into a new realm that spans well beyond his original adventure.

Features of Super Demo World include:

  • Ability to store more unconventional items in the reserve box, such as a koopa, springboard, message box, or vine
  • 120 exits in total, including two secret worlds
  • Creative and challenging level design, with some puzzle elements thrown in
  • "New" graphics (mostly backgrounds taken from other games, such as Donkey Kong Country 3 and Mega Man X)

Crystalis is an awesome action rpg by SNK. What little plot there is involves the world ending on October 1, 1997. Naturally, after that the world became full of mutants and monsters. Technology regresses and people can use magic. There is an evil empire trying to revive the ancient technology, specifically the obligatory tower floating in the sky. The hero pops out of some sort of stasis chamber and proceeds to topple the empire and take down the tower with the help of some wise men and a friendly dolphin. There's a heroine named Mesia, but she only shows up a few times, most of which are skipped in this run.

This beats the previous run by almost 12 minutes. As with that run, the second-controller cheats are off-limits (the fm2 only has data for controller 1). Other than that, no holds are barred. Many new glitches are used. For a complete list, see the game resources page. Movement is faster by abusing the no-subpixel engine. Much effort went into lag reduction, especially in certain areas. However, the vast majority of the time savings is due to better experience management.

We recommend watching the movie on an emulator and using the author's LUA script. There's quite a bit of useful information.

This is also used when unlocking a door would take longer than setting up and executing the bug.

Mario has a very wide range of skills for mobility and some of the physics of this game are easily abused by an experienced player.

This 10-second improvement is half made of no saving and a different overworld route, and half of just framewise optimizations. It was arrived into by AKA (now known as Mitjitsu) and Rikku together.

Award - SNES TAS of 2011
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is a vibrant, colorful and fun game that stars the popular Yoshi. From a technical standpoint, the game is very exceptional on the SNES due to its use of the SuperFX chip, which allows for many cool special effects that are otherwise impossible on the SNES.

This movie by Carl Sagan (no, not that Carl Sagan) is fast-paced, action-packed, and full of entertaining tricks and maneuvers. In other words, the very essence we tool-assisted speedrun makers enjoy. It also improves the previous run of this game by over 5 minutes. For more details, we recommend reading the author's comments; there's a lot more to this movie than meets the eye.

This run forgoes using the null egg glitch to finish the game within minutes and instead plays through the regular levels. To see the null egg glitch in action, check out the any% run by Masterjun. For more Yoshi's Island action, check out our 100% run.

Rockman 4 Minus Infinity is the most extensive Mega Man 4 hack in existence, and probably one of the most extensive hacks of any game in existence.

It features heavily reworked weapons, brand new weapons, new items, all-new boss patterns, and brand new stages with new music and entirely new gimmicks. All kinds of obstacles, enemies, bosses and minibosses have been taken from other games from the series, including the Game Boy series and even the SNES and PSX games. It must all be seen to be believed.

This run improves the author's previous run by 3:12.51 through a new route, new glitches and better optimization.

This is also used when unlocking a door would take longer than setting up and executing the bug.

This run, which completes all 120 of the game's exits, is nearly 4 and a half minutes faster than the previous version.

The homepage for Super Demo World, including the patch to be used on a Super Mario World ROM, and the program used to make the hack, is available online.

Ever wonder if Mario was actually a ninja wearing blue overalls? Now you know.

This run completes the game after collecting 1 star. It was originally intended that the player collect a minimum of 70 to finish, but a few bugs allow Mario to pass through doors and barriers that require a minimum number of stars to open. Creating the fastest Super Mario 64 run was previously believed to require 16 stars, but this run manages to glitch through the Dire Dire Docks door without using MIPS the rabbit.

Mario has a very wide range of skills for mobility and some of the physics of this game are easily abused by an experienced player.

Like many other runs on this site, the goal of pure speed has resulted in the complete breaking of some games.

Pokémon: Red Version is part of the first generation of games within its famous series, known for having a very large number of beneficial glitches. In fact, the game can be completed in less than one minute of in-game time by save data corruption as shown by this run, and it can be completed in under half an hour using a more "conventional" glitch, as shown by this run. These runs break the game, and avoid much of the gameplay intended by the developers.

In contrast, this run by MrWint catches all 151 Pokémon and completes the game, showing off much more of the game than seen in the other runs while still using many glitches to complete this goal much faster than the programmers could have imagined. Thanks to some new glitches, this run is over an hour faster than the previous movie in this category! For more details about the techniques used in this run, please read the author's notes.

Super Mario 64 DS is a remake of Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo DS, released in 2004 along with the system. It features improved graphics, new levels and playable characters, and most importantly in this case, a different "polish".

More importantly, it features different glitches than those featured in the runs of the original SM64.

In this run, MKDasher and ALAKTORN improve their previous movie by 4:31.69 by using several new glitches and tricks that allow them to finish the game while collecting only a single star.

In VVVVVV, the player controls Captain Viridian, who is lost in an alternate dimension, in search of the missing members of the spaceship's crew. Instead of jumping, the player is able to control the direction of gravity, allowing Captain Viridian to flip between the floors and ceilings of the environment. The graphical style of the game is heavily influenced by the Commodore 64.

In this run, Scepheo blazes to the ending in less than 9 minutes (7:55 according to the in-game timer), skips the fearsome Gravitron, and rescues the crew in a fraction of the length of the ship's regulated lunch break. Scepheo also improves Masterjun's previous run by over 4 and a half minutes through a new route and a new glitch that allows the captain to be flung out of a teleporter into a wall. For more information, see the author's comments.

This run avoids using glitches that require pressing the Escape key. There is also a run that uses these glitches to beat the game even faster.

Ash reveals his dark side, using save corruption and direct memory manipulation to catch 152 Pokémon in the blink of an eye. Then he beats the game in less than a minute (in-game time) - without ever leaving his own home, while somehow throwing an entire floor away, and 10 seconds faster than the previous run!

This run is so glitchy that it's near impossible to follow what's going on without help; reading the author's notes is highly recommended.

SNES Zelda completed in a very quick manner. The trick that is used to cut completion time by so much is holding left+up+right while entering a corridor or staircase, allowing Link to clip through the wall and walk out of bounds.

In X-Men 2: Clone Wars, the alien race Phalanx invades the earth and the X-Men and some X-Women try to stop them.

You get to choose which X-Man to play every stage as. Most of the time Nightcrawler is used because he has the highest movement speed. Second in command is Wolverine because he has the second highest speed and also deals a ton of damage.

The game is unique in the regard that it starts as soon as you power on your console. No SEGA logo, no title screen, no character select. Normally the game pseudorandomly gives you Beast, but changing the types of controllers (3- or 6-button) throws off the start-up timing enough that a faster character can be gotten.

This movie is 5:05.28 minutes shorter than the previous publication thanks to a variety of new tricks explained in the authors' comments.

This is the condensed version of a 100% run, in which only one (required) Mudokon is saved. This movie should be perfect for those who don't care about the well-being of the Mudokon race and just want to see some Oddworld parkour. Naturally, this run gets the bad ending.

This run saves 5:21.21 over the previous run (more than half its length!). First of all, the run uses a previously proposed alternate route. This route would be longer, except that there is also a glitch used which allows attacks to hit more often than they should, and this glitch makes the new route viable. Lastly, there are also faster movement methods used. As a result, you will (un)fortunately hear a lot less of Jonasan! Sharotto! Jonasan! Sharotto! Jonasan! Sharotto! in this version.

This movie of Sonic Advance is unique as a speedrun in one aspect: Sonic moves so fast that the "camera" of the game cannot even follow him. Therefore, he is rarely seen in the movie.

On the rare occasions we get to watch Sonic, we get to enjoy seeing him moving through walls, charging up for another dash, or making short work of bosses.

Besides the super fast speed itself, the speed also provides Sonic an ability (glitch) to pass through platforms and walls under certain conditions.

Mukki's TAS improves the previous run by 30.94 seconds, thanks to new routes and glitches explained in his comments.

Note: There are two encodes available for download; the first one is the original version, and the second one is a comparison encode: you can see the original version to the left, and what you see to the right is something made with a special emulator, hacked to force the game's camera to focus on Sonic, making it much easier to follow what Mukki is doing with him. The second YouTube stream displays these views side-by-side as well.

The main quest completion time has been shortened to nearly one fourth of what it initially was, thanks to the discovery of a glitch that allows Juste to sink into walls.

This is a 3:25.15 minute improvement over klmz's movie. Like in the previous movies, the author picked up an item to display those cool CRITICAL's for entertainment, at the cost of some time.

However, if you still think there is not enough zipping through walls, be sure to watch the second quest completed in less than half a minute!

007: Nightfire is a James Bond game. Does anything more need to be said? Guns, cars, planes, submarines, spaceships, girls, and megalomaniacs.

Authors gamerfreak5665 and aleckermit show off James Bond's impressive skill set, including cocaine-induced firearm handling and driving so reckless, not even a cute animal would give him car insurance.

A newly discovered clipping glitch opens up alternative paths making it possible to save a significant amount of time. Enjoy the show!

The second Castlevania title released on Nintendo DS after Dawn of Sorrow, this game is a direct sequel to BloodLines on Sega Genesis. Dracula rises from the dead yet again (cue groan), and it's up to Jonathan Morris, helped out by Charlotte Aulin, a powerful mage student, to defeat him.

This run is an improvement of 8.84 seconds over the previous run by the same author and uses many of the same glitches. A slightly different route selection sends Dracula back to his coffin even faster.

In this run, adelikat picks up maximum speed upgrades and has fun with perfect reflexes, much like the previous movie. That is certainly something nice to do, because the game scrolls automatically and the player cannot affect the speed. However, the point of this movie is not just to beat this game as fast as possible, but rather to do all kinds of unpredictable and awe-inspiring things rarely seen in any TAS — without losing time. See for yourself.

This is probably one of the best illustrations on how to create art out of a simplistic and otherwise uninteresting game to watch.

What is also different about this movie is an extra warp which significantly shortens the game, and the use of a new tool (input macro) as described in the submission text. Bots are occasionally used to generate pseudorandom input while still avoiding death.

Also be sure to check out this movie being played back on an actual NES.

Super Metroid is a classic game that normally takes much longer to beat. However, by abusing a glitch involving going through a door as the game is returning from the pause menu, total, sniq and cpadolf manage to corrupt the game's memory and make it jump to controller input. Once they gain control, they execute arbitrary code to tell the game to immediately jump to the ending only seven minutes in!

This run improves the previous one in this category by over five and a half minutes through a totally new glitch. It also finishes with a record ingame time of 00:02 and a completion rate of 2%!

Pokémon: Blue Version is part of the first generation of games within its famous series, known for having a very large number of beneficial glitches. In fact, the game can be completed in less than one minute of in-game time using save data corruption (as evidenced in the run of the Yellow Version), but this run avoids such techniques in favor of activating an entirely different glitch.

This is an improvement of 9:00.78 over the previous run in this category, which used a similar glitch to the more heavily glitched categories. You might want to check out the run that avoids glitched warps for an example of quickly completing the game without corrupting the memory.

Although the length of this movie is 22:50.27 when timed with our standard method, applying the timing method used by most Zelda speedrunners (until last hit on Ganon) would result in a final time of 19:46:22. It's important to note this so that there's no confusion about which runs are faster than the others.

In this TAS of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the author aims to beat the game as quickly as possible, and achieves this by exploiting a large sequence break which involves "tricking" the game into warping Link directly from the Deku Tree (the first dungeon) to Ganon's Castle.

It's a large improvement over the previous run and features an entirely new route; one which, for the first time in Ocarina of Time TASing history, doesn't even involve becoming Adult Link.

Unlike the previous movie of this category, this TAS was done using the Japanese version of the game. The reason for this is that the text is significantly faster than in the English version, which means that far less time is spent waiting for text boxes and cut scenes to end before getting back to the action. English subtitles were added to the encode for people interested in what is said.

The author's notes explain in great detail many of the things done in this TAS, which may be confusing to those who aren't familiar with Ocarina of Time speedrunning. Reading them is strongly advised.

Note: There are encodes of higher resolutions in the discussion thread.

This is the second and last true Mario game for the original Gameboy. It has unique power ups like carrots and bubbles and allows the player to go through each of the worlds in any order. It also features the first appearance of Wario, who would become a staple character for Nintendo.

This run is special, because not only it beats the previous run by 19:15.43, it literally soils the game by causing a massive amount of total glitching, to skip almost the whole game, to destroy Wario's castle without even meeting him! And you thought Sonic was fast!

There's trouble in Dream Land! The self-appointed King Dedede has stolen all of his subjects' food for a midnight feast. Kirby, a resident of Dream Land, bravely sets out to stop the gluttonous penguin and recover the food.

This first game in the Kirby series predates Kirby's ability to absorb enemy powers. He goes on to gain that ability in the second game in the series.

This run, a 34 second improvement over the previous movie, uses the 'Extra Game' password (up+select+A at title screen), which makes the enemies and bosses much more aggressive and damaging than usual.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is quite different from most of the early games in the Legend of Zelda series. It combines an overworld view with side-scrolling platform stages. In addition, the character can gain experience and levels, visit towns, and earn spells and items which are needed to proceed.

However, the game also has a large glitch which produces massive speed when both Left and Right are pressed at the same time. Most of this run features Link racing across Hyrule so fast that the screen can't keep up, inexplicably warping between places that shouldn't be connected. Only a few items and one spell are collected, and the only enemy ever fought is the final boss. Luckily, he takes the same amount of damage no matter what level attack you have.

In this run, TASeditor beats the previous run by Inzult by 6.47 seconds due to an entirely new route and some optimizations. See the submission comments and discussion for more details.

While Chrono Trigger (1995) usually takes days to complete, inichi decided he'd rather not have to sit through all the unnecessary stuff, like long cutscenes, unskippable boss fights and key plot events, so he did it in 21 minutes instead. Pokémon: FireRed Version is an enhanced version of the original Pokémon: Red Version. Many glitches have been removed, and the random mechanics behind wild encounters have changed. This leads to very different strategies compared to our fastest runs on the original generation of games, and as a result, runs of this game see much more of the plot.

Watch as MKDasher crushes this game using Clefable (the first evolved form of Clefairy) and lots of luck manipulation. This run improves the previous version by over 2 minutes by fighting most battles with Clefable instead of Squirtle and using Metronome (which picks a random move to use from all moves in the game) against the Elite Four.

There is also an encode here that contains interesting data like PP left for each move, Pokémon stats, and some commentary on the run alongside the video.

While decidedly not the same game, the Super Mario Bros. games on the NES are similar enough in game mechanics and controls that all four of them can be played at once with the same input.

This second version of the quad-run utilizes the credits glitch found in the newest Super Mario Bros. 3 run. As such, the focus is now on finishing Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels as fast as possible, allowing Super Mario Bros. 3 to entertain while waiting for the other three games to progress. The run also features an ending that may surprise you.

Crash Bandicoot is the first game in a seminal series for the PlayStation.

Utilizing zigzag movement and other new tricks, pirohiko improves the previous movie by a staggering 9:09.64, leaving Neo Cortex wondering just what kind of flying bandicoot on a double espresso he set on the loose. For details on the new tricks, differences between the USA and JPN versions, and the strategies used, reading the author's comments is recommended.

A second YouTube stream is available with an informative overlay that the author used while creating the run. The latter pair of encodes and torrents provides high quality 480p encodes improved for 3D.

Ufouria is a game that was strangely never released in the United States, even though it was released in Europe in addition to Japan (where it's known as Hebereke).

The game itself is a Metroid-style adventure: it takes place in a world that can be freely explored and several items need to be found and bosses defeated in order to gain access to some areas that initially seem inaccessible.

This run beats the previously published one by 1:39.84 due to newly explored tricks and better optimization.

Award - NES TAS of 2013
Kirby's Adventure is a colorful game that's very long for a NES title. However, a bug was discovered which caused unpredictable results (including triggering the credits) upon using the Stone power while entering the water.

This movie saves over five minutes from its predecessor. This is because instead of playing multiple levels to reach a spot for the glitch, a new wall-clipping trick is used in the third room of the very first level.

This movie was also the result of an intense frame war that spawned over a dozen attempts and ultimately resulted in an improvement of over 3 seconds of the initial attempt.

This movie has two YouTube encodes. The primary version has deliberately glitched ending graphics, whereas the second one displays proper graphics. Both versions have identical input except for the last frame.

Commander Keen 5: The Armageddon Machine (1991) is a part of the popular Commander Keen saga, developed by id Software. It is a direct continuation of the previous episode of Goodbye Galaxy, in which Commander Keen (Billy Blaze) has learned from the Oracle of Gnosticus IV that the evil Shikadi plan to blow up the galaxy with their doomsday device, the Omegamatic (It slices! It dices! It causes a 100,000 light year-diameter quantum explosion!). Naturally, he sets out to sabotage the machine and stop the Shikadi.

Using a series of glitches, Keen completes only four stages to get to the end game, only one of which takes any significant length of time, and destroys the Quantum Explosion Dynamo, the core of the Omegamatic in the impossibly short time of 2:02. In the process, he manages to inadvertently prevent the Shikadi from accomplishing their escape (though you have to watch the ending very closely to figure out that this has happened here).

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee details the adventures of Abe, a Mudokon, attempting to save his race from slavery and other horrible fates at the hands of the evil Glukkons.

This is the condensed version of a 100% run, in which only one (required) Mudokon is saved. This movie should be perfect for those who don't care about the well-being of the Mudokon race and just want to see some Oddworld parkour. Naturally, this run gets the bad ending.

This run is an improvement of 15:54.23 minutes over Dooty's previous Any% run! The improvement comes from new tricks, different strategies, fewer mistakes and the skipping of some stages.

The movie is slightly shorter than it should be due to emulation-related speedups during screen transitions. The gameplay itself is at mostly the correct speed.

EarthBound, also known as Mother 2, is a great RPG, designed by Shigesato Itoi in 1994-1995. It is best described as "random", but in a good way. The game has a great emphasis on humor; indeed, many things in the game are almost caricatured, from subplots to characters. It also has a versatile soundtrack.

Pirohiko improved the previous TAS by almost 5 minutes by resetting at precisely the right time to corrupt the SRAM and skip most of the game, including the credits.

Dawn of Sorrow (2005), the first installment of Castlevania on Nintendo DS, is a direct sequel to GBA hit Aria of Sorrow. Everyone is trying to kill our hero Soma Cruz, since in the previous game he absorbed all of Dracula's attributes. You can always trust weird cults to try and bring about the end of the world by unleashing this power.

The game is so fully broken at this point though, that there really is no plot in this run. Or final boss. Or much of anything at all. Using improved versions of the glitches used in its predecessor, this movie completes the game in half the time. More details about the glitches can be found in the author's comments.

A rare instance of a Japanese-made NES game based on a U.S.-originated comic book, Bucky O'Hare (1992) provides a player with a good combination of platforming action similar to Mega Man, an interesting plot, and convincing production values. You can play as one of the five unique characters, which you are free to select at any time, after saving them from the clutches of the Toad Empire. Each character has special abilities required to take advantage of in order to pass through the game's numerous variably designed stages, ranging from single-screen puzzle rooms to autoscrolling shoot-'em-ups.

Interesting fact about this game is that Konami used to implement unconventional ways of piracy protection, in this particular case by making each hit or an otherwise harmful collision in the game result in an instant death if you play it illegitimately. Apparently, this was how a large amount of people were used to playing it in pre-emulation era, without ever finding out Konami's little sabotage.

This movie by AnS is set up in a fashion that imitates this handicap by playing the game in hard mode (accessing it through a password), where every hit results in death. Other than that, it also improves the previous movie by 2 minutes 48.7 seconds, using several major glitches and a lot of small tricks explained in great detail in the author's comments.

During the prolonged campaign known as the Goblin Wars, the Goblin Army gathered one night to amass a final assault upon Duke Hector Barrik's Castle. In the middle of this decisive battle, however, both armies were suddenly interrupted by a great earthquake as a vortex violently manifested itself in the midnight sky. Friend and foes alike were sucked up and taken into this void. On the other side, the Duke's Castle and its inhabitants mysteriously found themselves deposited within a hollow valley, securely guarded by impossibly high cliffs illuminated by a flaring red sun overhead. Per the Duke's urgent request, four adventurers are summoned and commissioned with the task of exploring this strange new land, in hopes of finding allies to establish trade with.

In ars4326's run, the ground work laid by the previous TASer, A Jesus Fan, is improved upon in this 7+ minute improvement. Most notably, only a single Thief is used throughout due to a programming exploit which allows him to inflict waves of constant critical damage while fighting in dungeons. In addition, a newly discovered reloading trick is used to skip the game's only required overworld fight in the Azcan Jungle. Also, new route strategies and movement optimizations are featured.

Finally, the ending input has been corrected to showcase the game's entire ending upon completing the final dungeon.

Solar Jetman is a space adventure game where the main excitement comes from the physics of the game. In the game, you explore planets with a small module you fly around, towing fuel tanks and other artifacts back to the mother ship, often from planets with a ridiculous level of gravity and narrow hazardous caverns. Anyone who has played this game surely knows how difficult it can be, while being entertaining for hours after hours.

No passwords were used in this movie, although a few warps were used to skip stages.

This movie features many changes compared to the previous author's movie, leading to an improvement of about 7 minutes. There's a new warp in the very beginning. A different module is purchased, which lets the player tow wormholes closer to the fuel items you have to collect and allows for some new physics abuse. Some different items are used, such as anti-gravity items. For more details, see the submission comments.

There is some commentary by the author in the emulator movie file and in the primary (HQ) encode.

Final Fantasy Adventure is the first game of the Seiken Densetsu (聖剣伝説) series, but it does contain some classic Final Fantasy elements. The series is probably best known for the SNES game Secret of Mana. This game was later remade on the Game Boy Advance as Sword of Mana. Its gameplay resembles that of a The Legend of Zelda game, but with level building.

In this run, Touch-me utilizes a glitch to warp across the map, cutting down the completion time by a lot compared to the warpless run. He also improves the previous run in this category by 51:22.56 minutes thanks to a big new warp glitch that allows him to reach the top of the Tower of Gemma early.

ActRaiser (1990) is a critically acclaimed SNES game which combines two major gameplay phases: a god simulator and an action platformer. You play the role of God "the Master", who awakens from his slumber only to find that the human civilization is completely wrecked, and hordes of demons are roaming free. The Master has two roles: to open new locations for humans to inhabit, and to deal with the catastrophes happening there, which usually have something to do with grotesque monsters, as represented in side-scrolling action stages, and to help develop the civilization anew by controlling it during the overhead phases through a bow-wielding cupid who also repels mischievous demons, as presented in the form of an overhead simulation.

This is an improvement of 14:11.48 over the original run of this game from 2004.

Deadly Towers is an infamous 'Nintendo Hard' game, where you control Prince Myer in his quest to destroy seven bells guarded by seven bosses and stop the evil wizard Rubas. The character is slow and takes a lot of damage very easily, making the game usually a great challenge. While there are powerups which boost your abilities, they are generally found in secret passages with no indication of their location.

In this run by ars4326, the Japanese version Mashou (魔鐘) is used due to it containing an inventory glitch that, essentially, gives you unlimited bells after death-warping and defeating Cold Killer twice. New routes, sequence breaking, and movement optimizations are also involved in this updated run.

Ecco the Dolphin is a game where you control a fast, but hard to maneuver dolphin who travels into hostile environment to save the other dolphins after a freak waterspout storm.

This run improves the previous one through better execution, a new route and new glitches. As in the previous run, damage is avoided, as it almost always slows Ecco down. At the same time, a major new glitch allowing Ecco to go through nearly any wall was not used because the frequency of its use would make the run very repetitive.

In the revolutionary 3D debut for the Legend of Zelda series, Link must travel around the colourful land of Hyrule and awaken six Sages in order to save it from the evil Ganondorf.

This run was originally created for the Japanese video site nicovideo, and hence was run on the Japanese version of the game; allowing this is a deliberate exception to the site's rules. Further improvements are known to exist.

Final Fantasy III was the second of two Final Fantasy NES games to be released only in Japan, leading to the fourth game in the series being released to the rest of the world as Final Fantasy II. The game brings back the experience point system from the first game while changing up the character jobs formula by allowing the player to change a character's class mid-game as well as acquire new and advanced classes.

In this movie, the author, AmaizumiUni, abuses a bug that causes character inventory to overflow, corrupting the game's memory and triggering the credits early.

Hydlide is an old and somewhat notorious game, mostly because it has very strange gameplay mechanics. For the first part of the game, walking consumes health, and the character must stop every now and then to regain it.

This is one of the few games (the only one?) where the level grinding sequences are actually entertaining, while the boss fights aren't. Hitting a boss decreases your own health as well as the boss's, after which there is much waiting for more health until you can hit him again.

This is an improvement of 3:54.79 over the previous TAS, due to overall better levelling strategy and route planning.

There is also a submitted TAS that uses codes and removes the need to level grind or wait for health.

In this second game of the series, watch nearly three and a half hours of luck manipulation so intense that it took scripting and bot-work to perform most of it. Most of the bosses in the second half of the run die in one or two rounds.

This is an improvement of 15 minutes and 13 seconds over the previous movie, due to a variety of improvements, and in spite of playing on "Super" difficulty, which is functionally the highest difficulty level.

If you enjoyed this, be sure to check out the first game in the series as well.

Our young hero Chezni, on a bet, enters and explores a forbidden tower and manages to activate an ancient machine deactivated 10,000 years ago. Naturally, he spends the next two and a half hours trying to figure out how to turn it off again.

This RPG is unusual because the player's health is used to cast magic spells, so there is no separate "MP" stat in this game. Rather than having a list of spells you learn, you instead gain the skills of several spirits; each spirit has its own spell, or you can combine two spirits to make a different spell. (In this run, you'll mostly see Chezni use the Fire Spirit, especially since repeated use of a spirit makes its magic stronger.) You can also recruit mercenaries to join your party at different points in the game, similar to The 7th Saga.

The author, janus completes this game an amazing 24 minutes faster than the previous run, largely due to massive use of AtkBack which makes enemies take a fraction of the damage that they inflict on the player. With this spell, the end bosses basically beat themselves up! There is also much more manipulation to minimize the number of random encounters. See the submission comments for more details.

Battletoads (1991) is a futuristic beat 'em up game known for its extreme difficulty spread over 16 difficult levels. The mechanics in the game also change drastically from level to level, making the game one of the hardest and most varied for the NES.

In this game, the second most diabolical evil genius in the universe - The Dark Queen, kidnaps Princess Angelica, and Pimple - a battletoad. Rash and Zitz must save them, by traveling through the most insane multilevel set of plans ever designed. This includes falling down huge shafts, racing through obstacle courses at breakneck speeds, riding on snakes through a massive maze of spikes, passing through a killer ventilation system, navigating through a missile defense system, climbing a never ending revolving tower, and much much more. Along the way, The Battletoads must also face off against an evil army of robots, genetically engineered rodents, to say nothing of The Dark Queen herself.

In order to make the game a bit easier, its creators embedded some secret warp zones to skip a few early levels in their entirety. But that simply wasn't good enough for TheZlomuS and DyLaX, they decided to travel directly to level 3, where they invent their own warp and skip right to the grand finale. The previous run showed off how buggy this game is by abusing glitches anywhere and everywhere - even flying and using the walls themselves as a means to maneuver around murderous areas. This run took a glitch found there, and exploited it further, to the point where our heroes are defeated, the game is over, and The Dark Queen in all her evilness just gives up and returns Angelica and Pimple, to go off and hatch an even more evil plan for next time.

This run is a 10:03.03 minute improvement over the previous run. Due to the vast majority of the game being skipped, so is most of the entertainment. If you haven't seen it yet, be sure to check out the previous run too, it's one of the best runs on our site.

Dragon View is a side-scrolling role-playing video game released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in November 1994. Released in Japan as Super Drakkhen and otherwise known as Drakkhen II, it is meant to be a prequel to Drakkhen although it bears little resemblance to its predecessor. It uses the same pseudo-3D overworld system for which the series is most famous. Other features of Dragon View are its side-view action role-playing game (RPG) hybrid gameplay (used when exploring more detailed areas such as towns and dungeons), its well-translated first person storyline, and its emphasis on player-driven undirected exploration.

In this run, Khaz makes the game realize how boring it really is, and has it jump straight to the credits roughly halfway through the intended story. A side effect of this particular glitch is the cutscene after the credits getting glitched out and having the main character walk in place, forever.

More information on how this was achieved can be found in the submission notes.

Solomon’s Key is a puzzle platform game with an old clumsy magician who has the power of creating and destroying platforms. And through that power, he saves the world.

This movie plays all the rooms of the game, including the hidden rooms with Page of Time, Page of Space, and even a princess of some kind. (Fairy collection rooms were not included.) No warps were used. Due to those secrets, it accomplishes the best ending of the game.

This movie is almost a minute and a half faster than the predecessor movie. In addition, it marks the obsoletion of the last Famtasia movie.

Dragon Warrior 3 completed quickly by using a bizarre glitch that allows the author to fill his inventory with useful items, manipulate his stats, and even add places to his return list! This allows most of the game to be skipped.

Thanks to this new method of item glitching, this is almost exactly nine minutes faster than the previous version of the run.

The author wrote detailed comments explaining this glitch.

While Chrono Trigger (1995) usually takes days to complete, Crono decided he'd rather not have to sit through all the unnecessary stuff, like long cutscenes, unskippable boss fights and key plot events, so he did it in three minutes instead.

The 18-minute improvement comes from utilizing mid-frame resets which were recently implemented in lsnes.
