Award - Sega TAS of 2012
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992) was the game that introduced super dash attack. The ability, referred to as spin dash in later games, has become one of the most beloved features of the series—and, indeed, one of the most prominent features of the speedrunning scene as a whole.

In this exhilarating movie, Aglar speeds his way through the classic's varied levels making good use of spin dashes to break old routes and create new ones however he pleases. The author also controls Tails—Sonic's two-tailed foxy buddy—to allow for even faster routes and making shorter work of bosses.

This is an improvement of 50.76 seconds over the previous movie, thanks to better routes and general optimization as explained in the author's comments.

On this site, we make perfect movies, and then we surpass them. Of course, if we can surpass them, they were not perfect in the first place, but who would have known?

When "perfection" is defined as "as fast as possible", it requires some sacrifices. Indeed, this movie sacrifices a lot in the playability of the game. Full of tricks to pass through walls, tricks to avoid mandatory battles, tricks to pass through enemies relatively unharmed, tricks to acquire weapon refills in little time — there is very little in this movie left that resembles normal playing. Even death is used as a viable playing strategy that saves time. All of the tricks are still performed by the means of mere controller input, even though significant portions of the input were calculated by a computer program.

This movie is a considerable improvement of 3:04.39 to the previous movie; this is mainly due to a new technique which tricks the game into calling an 'end of level' object.

Of course, upon watching this movie, one does have to question something... is it Mega Man saving the world? Or Dr. Wily trying to save it from absolute destruction?

X is trying to find the lost Maverick Hunter Zero, who has gone missing since X5. Of course, once found, Zero does most of the dirty work, while X is practically nowhere to be found.

This run completes all of the stages, showing off how nasty every level is on Xtreme difficulty. As always, Zero is much better suited to killing bosses than X. Zero also uses powerups that he wouldn't be able to use in an any% run.

The author, Rolanmen1, also improves the previous movie by 1:47.03 by taking a different route and using a new trick that allows him to skip the totem poles in Ground Scaravich's stage.

If you want to see the game completed as fast as possible, see the any% run.

Although the length of this movie is 21:50.6 when timed with our standard method, applying the timing method used by most Zelda speedrunners (until last hit on Ganon) would result in a final time of 18:46.85. It's important to note this so that there's no confusion about which runs are faster than the others.

In this TAS of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the author aims to beat the game as quickly as possible. He achieves this by exploiting a large sequence break which involves "tricking" the game into warping Link directly from the Deku Tree (the first dungeon) to Ganon's Castle. Child Link then goes on conquering the whole Castle without a single thought about becoming an Adult beforehand.

Despite how quickly this game can be beaten these days, this run is almost one minute faster than its predecessor thanks to a new trick at the Tower Collapse Sequence and many small improvements throughout the run.

This TAS was done using the Japanese version of the game. The reason for this is that the text is significantly faster than in the English version, which means that far less time is spent waiting for text boxes and cut scenes to end before getting back to the action.

The author's notes explain in great detail many of the things done in this TAS, which may be confusing to those who aren't familiar with Ocarina of Time speedrunning. Reading them is strongly advised.

The TASVideos record movie for Pokémon: Yellow Version is a glitchfest that has Ash cataloging every Pokémon in slightly over a minute. Is there any way to get more ridiculous than that? Using nothing but the Game Boy controller and tool-assisted precision, the game is made to run an arbitrary program. See the author's comments for the technical details.

This movie improves upon its predecessor by never having to leave Ash's room to gain full control of execution flow. However, the predecessor has a very different kind of payload at the end. Be sure to see the last minute of the previous movie as well.

This movie was submitted on March 14 - "Pi Day", and contains many many references to π. See how many you can find.

Basically, FractalFusion in this run applies the idea that TASing is programming input rather than playing the game. To see more examples of that, be guided by this post.

Rockman & Forte (ロックマン&フォルテ), known as Mega Man & Bass in the western world, used to be the last game chronologically released for the original Rockman/Megaman series, until Rockman & Forte Mirai kara no Chōsensha (ロックマン&フォルテ 未来からの挑戦者) was released on the WonderSwan handheld system.

This game bears a striking resemblance to Mega Man 8, not only in style, but in excessive graphic detail. Similarly to Mega Man X4, the player has the option to choose one of two characters to play through. In this run, Rockman is choosen.

This run is 41.64 seconds faster than the previous run, demonstrating that this game is even glitchier than it originally appeared.

There are two more Rockman & Forte runs to watch on this site; featuring completion of the game with Forte as fast as possible and collection of all CDs with Rockman.

Here at TASVideos we make perfect movies... and then we beat them again — this time by 1 frame, which, considering the fiercely competitive history of this run, is actually significant.

And if watching this TAS on an emulator isn't satisfying enough, why not see it done on a real console!

Perfection is good. You're not satisfied with beating the game in real time, so you invent software tools to play it frame by frame. You optimize your run to death over several years, finding glitches that let you skip right to the end, but it's not enough. You make an emulator that's so precise its runs sync on the console. You make a hardware tool to feed them to an actual SNES and use it to play your movie back on one. Now we expect a public presentation of the SNESBot at an event like AwesomeGamesDoneQuick someday. Because what else can follow on this level of perfection?

This glitched run is 56.50 seconds faster than Masterjun's previous movie. For those who love to read the technical specifics of such runs, there are detailed author's comments about the new method used here. Suffice to say that 8 controllers are required to get this to work.

If you want to see more movies like this, let this post be your guide.

Sonic bounces around surprisingly fast. The lack of Spin Dash makes the strategy a bit different from that of Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles runs, since preserving your momentum becomes a lot more important. However, this doesn't prevent the authors from achieving crazy velocities even with such a significant limitation. In this run, the game is completed without collecting any emeralds.

This is the sixth run of this game, improving on the previous effort by 47.29 seconds with the use of new zips and improved precision.

EarthBound is a great RPG, designed by Shigesato Itoi in 1994-1995, and is also known by the name Mother 2.

It is best described as "random", in a good way. The game has a great emphasis on a humor, and indeed many things in the game are almost caricatured, from subplots to characters. It also has a versatile soundtrack.

Our description for the previous movie stated, "Although this being a speedrun (tool-assisted at that), most of the plot of the game is intact...". This time around, not so much. Thanks to some collision detection bugs, including one that shows that the Skip Sandwich is a fitting name for the item in ways the developers never intended, the author is able to move around the game's areas freely, completing the bare minimum number of tasks needed to keep the final battle from locking up.

Also unlike the previous movie, this one does use a death as a shortcut. However, the teddy bear survives this time around.

Arguably one of the most well known and well developed SNES hacks in existence, Super Demo World puts Mario into a new realm that spans well beyond his original adventure.

Features of Super Demo World include:

  • Ability to store more unconventional items in the reserve box, such as a koopa, springboard, message box, or vine
  • 120 exits in total, including two secret worlds
  • Creative and challenging level design, with some puzzle elements thrown in
  • "New" graphics (mostly backgrounds taken from other games, such as Donkey Kong Country 3 and Mega Man X)

Crystalis is an awesome action rpg by SNK. What little plot there is involves the world ending on October 1, 1997. Naturally, after that the world became full of mutants and monsters. Technology regresses and people can use magic. There is an evil empire trying to revive the ancient technology, specifically the obligatory tower floating in the sky. The hero pops out of some sort of stasis chamber and proceeds to topple the empire and take down the tower with the help of some wise men and a friendly dolphin. There's a heroine named Mesia, but she only shows up a few times, most of which are skipped in this run.

This beats the previous run by almost 12 minutes. As with that run, the second-controller cheats are off-limits (the fm2 only has data for controller 1). Other than that, no holds are barred. Many new glitches are used. For a complete list, see the game resources page. Movement is faster by abusing the no-subpixel engine. Much effort went into lag reduction, especially in certain areas. However, the vast majority of the time savings is due to better experience management.

We recommend watching the movie on an emulator and using the author's LUA script. There's quite a bit of useful information.

Award - SNES TAS of 2011
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is a vibrant, colorful and fun game that stars the popular Yoshi. From a technical standpoint, the game is very exceptional on the SNES due to its use of the SuperFX chip. The chip allows for many cool special effects that are otherwise impossible on the SNES.

This run is an improvement of over 5 minutes to the previous speedrun of this game. For more details, we recommend reading the author's comments; there's a lot more to this movie than meets the eye, even though the movie is very colourful, action-packed, and full of entertaining tricks and maneuvers. In other words, this game is the very essence we tool-assisted speedrun movie makers enjoy. :)

If you want even more Yoshi craziness, be sure to check out the warped completion and 100% run .

In X-Men 2: Clone Wars, the alien race Phalanx invades the earth and the X-Men and some X-Women try to stop them.

You get to choose which X-Man to play every stage as. Most of the time Nightcrawler is used because he has the highest movement speed. Second in command is Wolverine because he has the second highest speed and also deals a ton of damage.

The game is unique in the regard that it starts as soon as you power on your console. No SEGA logo, no title screen, no character select. Normally the game pseudorandomly gives you Beast, but changing the types of controllers (3- or 6-button) throws off the start-up timing enough that a faster character can be gotten.

This movie is 5:05.28 minutes shorter than the previous publication thanks to a variety of new tricks explained in the authors' comments.

The main quest completion time has been shortened to nearly one fourth of what it initially was, thanks to the discovery of a glitch that allows Juste to sink into walls.

This is a 3:25.15 minute improvement over klmz's movie. Like in the previous movies, the author picked up an item to display those cool CRITICAL's for entertainment, at the cost of some time.

However, if you still think there is not enough zipping through walls, be sure to watch the second quest completed in less than half a minute!

Metal Gear Solid was one of the original breakthrough titles in the stealth gaming genre. It follows Solid Snake, a soldier who is infiltrating a nuclear weapons facility on a remote Alaskan island codenamed Shadow Moses Island. Snake must rescue two hostages from the terrorist organization FOXHOUND and stop them from launching a nuclear strike on the United States.

In this run, theenglishman abuses walk-through-walls and weapon glitches to save over 26 minutes from his previous run. Reading the submission comments is recommended.

This movie of Sonic Advance is unique as a speedrun in one aspect: Sonic moves so fast that the "camera" of the game cannot even follow him. Therefore, he is rarely seen in the movie.

On the rare occasions we get to watch Sonic, we get to enjoy seeing him moving through walls, charging up for another dash, or making short work of bosses.

Besides the super fast speed itself, the speed also provides Sonic an ability (glitch) to pass through platforms and walls under certain conditions.

Mukki's TAS improves the previous run by 30.94 seconds, thanks to new routes and glitches explained in his comments.

Note: There are two encodes available for download; the first one is the original version, and the second one is a comparison encode: you can see the original version to the left, and what you see to the right is something made with a special emulator, hacked to force the game's camera to focus on Sonic, making it much easier to follow what Mukki is doing with him. The second YouTube stream displays these views side-by-side as well.

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee details the adventures of Abe, a Mudokon, attempting to save his race from slavery and other horrible fates at the hands of the evil Glukkons.

This is the condensed version of a 100% run, in which only one (required) Mudokon is saved. This movie should be perfect for those who don't care about the well-being of the Mudokon race and just want to see some Oddworld parkour. Naturally, this run gets the bad ending.

This run is an improvement of 15:54.23 minutes over Dooty's previous Any% run! The improvement comes from new tricks, different strategies, fewer mistakes and the skipping of some stages.

The movie is slightly shorter than it should be due to emulation-related speedups during screen transitions. The gameplay itself is at mostly the correct speed.

A rare instance of a Japanese-made NES game based on a U.S.-originated comic book, Bucky O'Hare (1992) provides a player with a good combination of platforming action similar to Mega Man, an interesting plot, and convincing production values. You can play as one of the five unique characters, which you are free to select at any time, after saving them from the clutches of the Toad Empire. Each character has special abilities required to take advantage of in order to pass through the game's numerous variably designed stages, ranging from single-screen puzzle rooms to autoscrolling shoot-'em-ups.

Interesting fact about this game is that Konami used to implement unconventional ways of piracy protection, in this particular case by making each hit or an otherwise harmful collision in the game result in an instant death if you play it illegitimately. Apparently, this was how a large amount of people were used to playing it in pre-emulation era, without ever finding out Konami's little sabotage.

This movie by AnS is set up in a fashion that imitates this handicap by playing the game in hard mode (accessing it through a password), where every hit results in death. Other than that, it also improves the previous movie by 2 minutes 48.7 seconds, using several major glitches and a lot of small tricks explained in great detail in the author's comments.

Commander Keen 5: The Armageddon Machine (1991) is a part of the popular Commander Keen saga, developed by id Software. It is a direct continuation of the previous episode of Goodbye Galaxy, in which Commander Keen (Billy Blaze) has learned from the Oracle of Gnosticus IV that the evil Shikadi plan to blow up the galaxy with their doomsday device, the Omegamatic (It slices! It dices! It causes a 100,000 light year-diameter quantum explosion!). Naturally, he sets out to sabotage the machine and stop the Shikadi.

Using a series of glitches, Keen completes only four stages to get to the end game, only one of which takes any significant length of time, and destroys the Quantum Explosion Dynamo, the core of the Omegamatic in the impossibly short time of 2:02. In the process, he manages to inadvertently prevent the Shikadi from accomplishing their escape (though you have to watch the ending very closely to figure out that this has happened here).

Dawn of Sorrow (2005), the first installment of Castlevania on Nintendo DS, is a direct sequel to GBA hit Aria of Sorrow. Everyone is trying to kill our hero Soma Cruz, since in the previous game he absorbed all of Dracula's attributes. You can always trust weird cults to try and bring about the end of the world by unleashing this power.

The game is so fully broken at this point though, that there really is no plot in this run. Or final boss. Or much of anything at all. Final Fantasy Adventure is the first game of the Seiken Densetsu (聖剣伝説) series, but it does contain some classic Final Fantasy elements. The series is probably best known for the SNES game Secret of Mana. This game was later remade on the Game Boy Advance as Sword of Mana. Its gameplay resembles that of a The Legend of Zelda game, but with level building.

In this run, Touch-me utilizes a glitch to warp across the map, cutting down the completion time by a lot compared to the warpless run. He also improves the previous glitched run by 51:22.56 minutes thanks to a big new warp glitch that allows him to reach the top of the Tower of Gemma early.

ActRaiser (1990) is a critically acclaimed SNES game which combines two major gameplay phases: a god simulator and an action platformer. You play the role of God "the Master", who awakens from his slumber only to find that the human civilization is completely wrecked, and hordes of demons are roaming free. The Master has two roles: to open new locations for humans to inhabit, and to deal with the catastrophes happening there, which usually have something to do with grotesque monsters, as represented in side-scrolling action stages, and to help develop the civilization anew by controlling it during the overhead phases through a bow-wielding cupid who also repels mischievous demons , as presented in the form of an overhead simulation.

This is an improvement of 14:11.48 over the original run of this game from 2004.

- Forgoes time-saving death
- Forgoes warps
- Genre: Platform
- Genre: Puzzle
Solomon’s Key is a puzzle platform game with an old clumsy magician who has the power of creating and destroying platforms. And through that power, he saves the world.

This movie plays all the rooms of the game, including the hidden rooms with Page of Time, Page of Space, and even a princess of some kind. (Fairy collection rooms were not included.) No warps were used. Due to those secrets, it accomplishes the best ending of the game.

This movie is almost a minute and a half faster than the predecessor movie. In addition, it marks the obsoletion of the last Famtasia movie.

- Uses hardest difficulty
- Genre: Action
- Genre: Strategy
North & South is a humorous, cartoony kind of game about an incredibly bloody war. In it, you move army units around on a board until you approach your opponent, at which point a battle occurs.

MESHUGGAH improves the previous run by 9.09 seconds at a higher difficulty level by choosing south and manipulating luck better.

- Uses a game restart sequence
- Heavy glitch abuse
- Corrupts save data
- Genre: RPG
While Chrono Trigger (1995) usually takes days to complete, Crono decided he'd rather not have to sit through all the unnecessary stuff, like long cutscenes, unskippable boss fights and key plot events, so he did it in three minutes instead.

The 18-minute improvement comes from utilizing mid-frame resets which were recently implemented in lsnes.

Reading the authors' comments is a requirement if you want so much as a clue to what's going on.

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee, a game released for several platforms, details the adventures of Abe, a Mudokon, attempting to save his race from slavery and other horrible fates at the hands of the evil Glukkons.

In this run, Dooty rescues all 99 of Abe's fellow Mudokons, earning the good ending and unlocking some bonus features to boot. He also improves his previous run by 5:56.66 using new tricks, different strategies and fewer mistakes.

If you like this movie, be sure to check out the other run of this game, where Dooty rushes to the end of the game without caring about Abe's partners.

Please read the welcome page if you haven't already done so. It explains the rules and methods that apply to all of these movies, particularly the use of savestates and frame advance. Also refer to our Glossary to understand terms we use, such as TAS or other unfamiliar terms.
