Azure Dreams is an RPG random dungeon crawler where the main character, Koh, can recruit familiars and level them up in the 40-floor Monster Tower, while gaining items and riches. He can also help the local town and romance some girls.

As can be seen from the movie time, none of this occurs in this TAS. It's just one naked dash to the top and a whole bunch of fortuitous circumstances. Luck manipulation was used on almost every floor to ensure that elevators and helpful traps are strategically located.

Should you decide to play Azure Dreams, this is definitely the wrong way to play the game.

Bishi Bashi Special is a game that's similar to Salary Man Champ, being a Japan-only collection of mini-games with a variety of rules.

This game has two modes, the main mode and Time Trial mode. Time Trial mode features the car level from the main mode as well as a lot of original levels where a button must be pushed over and over as fast as the player can, aptly nicknamed "button mashers".

Spikestuff runs through Time Trial mode, aiming to get the highest score in each minigame with in-game time as a secondary goal. For more details, see the author's comments.

Bishi Bashi Special is a collection of 46 mini-games with a variety of rules.

Here Spikestuff is playing through them quickly while picking up the maximum score of 10 for each. Getting the high score sometimes has odd conditions, like the elephant race where finishing 7-2 is needed for the 10.

For a TAS of a related game, see the Salary Man Champ publication.

The Brood, an ancient race of dragons, is all but extinct. Their power was so strong that they had to be killed. A (that's how Ryu is called in this run), the last one of the Brood, is awaken after 400 years and he wants to know more about his people.

Well aware of his fearful power, A uses it until he becomes strong enough to rely on his physical power. After which he manipulates luck to an indecent extent, using frame-by-frame advancing to pulverize his foes, and even the final boss. It may be a little anti-climactic, but it's much quicker this way.

This is currently the second longest published movie, second only to Final Fantasy VIII. You might want to take your morning and your afternoon to watch this.

Like most games in Castlevania series, Symphony of the Night has different possible endings. To achieve the best ending, one must explore at least 1847 rooms which is normally a huge time consuming task. While traveling through all those rooms, the author also acquires all of the relics, making this an "all relics and best ending" run.

During the exploring, the player can unlock different abilities for Alucard which make him able to reach new areas. Some of these abilities are used to gain a tremendous speed and glitch through routes which players could not have even dreamed in 1997.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is the first installment of the Castlevania series on PSX, and was the very first PSX TAS to be published.

Follow the quest of Richter (playable after you beat the game once) and see how he glitches and speeds through the castle. If you like fast sliding, dashing, uppercutting, and using precipitation to defeat bosses, you'll love this run.

In order to see a "full" run of the game, see the Alucard version.

Award - PSX TAS of 2011
Not only was Castlevania: Symphony of the Night the first installment of the Castlevania series on PSX, but also the very first PSX TAS to be published. Follow Dracula's son Alucard and see how he glitches through the castle on a quest to end his father's life.

By using a dirty SRAM and finding other tricks, arukAdo improved the previous movie by a massive 5:03.36. You can read the author's comments to learn more about the other improvements.

A 100% run covering the whole castle is also available. If you prefer the main character to have muscular bare arms, and to pray to the rain gods to defeat bosses, you may enjoy the Richter version.

Castlevania Chronicles is a PSX remake of the Japan-only X68000 version of Castlevania, titled simply Akumajō Dracula (悪魔城ドラキュラ), which is a remake of the first Castlevania game. In this game, Simon Belmont is set to defeat the evil count Dracula.

In the run, the author uses Arrange Mode, as it's more suitable for taking damage to save time (Simon loses less HP when getting hit in Arrange Mode than in Original Mode). Furthermore, a trick allows him to use a subweapon with less attack animation (jumping and whipping twice before attacking with the subweapon).

After completing the story mode of Chocobo Racing nine times, one gains access to the secret character "Invincible". This run, starting from a save state generated by this movie, uses this character in time attack mode to put the other characters to shame.

Anyone with a passing familiarity with the Final Fantasy series should recognise the fine Chocobo, preferred steed of many alternate universes. It's therefore not surprising that a game starring Chocobos and races would be released.

The Japanese version of this game is used due to differences in at least one stage causing the Japanese version to be more difficult.

This is the second in a series of seminal platformers for the PlayStation, with very similar gameplay to its predecessor.

Note for viewers: In order to be sync-stable, a sound plugin with less than perfect sound quality needed to be used, so do not be alarmed if the sound is not flawless. However, using a different plugin was possible for the introduction and the ending. There is also a slight graphical glitch in level 23 where textures are missing, but this is very minor.

Croc: Legend of the Gobbos chronicles the adventure of a crocodile (creatively named Croc) who runs and jumps through four worlds in order to save his gobbo friends. However, through a glitch in the physics engine, Croc adds another trick to his repertoire: the ability to float. Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Battle 22 is a fighting game based on the Dragon Ball Z anime series. The "22" refers to the number of characters unlocked at the start of the game (a few more can be unlocked). The game was panned by critics and consumers alike because of its very poor overall quality.

The author, Mothrayas, uses Goku's ridiculously powerful crouching close punch move to deplete enemies' lifebars really quickly and defeat all 27 opponents in record time.

Ehrgeiz - God Bless the Ring is a game with two main modes. The first mode is a 3D fighting game, which is primarily known for including characters from Final Fantasy 7. The PlayStation-exclusive second mode, Quest Mode, is a dungeon-crawling RPG, where randomly generated floor layouts and dropped item probabilities make the game different every time you play.

This run plays through Quest Mode, using lots of luck manipulation to get very short floor layouts. (As a commenter noted in the discussion thread, the game may be more aptly called "God Bless the RNG".)

Squaresoft (now known as Square Enix) didn't only make role-playing games! They also made games of different genres. This one is a shoot'em up called Einhänder.

This shooting game has something particular compared to its siblings. Not only can the player shoot bullets, but he can also wield a sword and slash through enemies. In fact, the game's title, Einhänder, means "single-handed" in German, referring to the player's sword.

In this movie, sparky takes advantage of a glitch to abuse the weapon's attack to cause more damage. This is only possible in the Japanese version.

This is the much-anticipated tool-assisted speedrun of the ninth installment in the Final Fantasy series (and the last to be made for the PSX). With its many references to the older games, it's a trip down memory lane for those familiar with the series.

A lot of route planning has gone into this run. Reading the author's comments is recommended. The encodes (both the MKVs and on Youtube) also have explanatory subtitles to read along with. The famous Excalibur II quest, which requires the player to get to the end of the game in under 12 hours, is soundly beaten with more than 4 hours and 40 minutes of spare time.

Note: due to an emulation error, some areas have rather loud background sound effects (like Alexandria during Vivi's first appearance).

Final Fantasy VIII (1999) marked a significant departure from earlier Squaresoft titles — it was their first game to have realistically proportioned characters and did away with much of the traditional gameplay systems used by earlier titles. Additionally, it is the first Final Fantasy to focus on a love story.

MediEvil tells the tale of one very deceased knight's quest to rid the land of undead legions and the wicked magician that created them. The gameplay is very reminiscent of the action-platformers of old, consisting largely of running around each stage whilst hacking up baddies. But there is also a good share of puzzles to be solved. The tale, speaking of, is of Sir Daniel Fortesque (the knight) and his battle against evil forces, and the magician who started it all, Zarok.

Sir Fortesque pulls out his own brand of trickery in order to plow through this game, warping around levels and outwitting fiendish puzzles in order to stop Zarok and his forces.

The eighth entry in the Mega Man series is very similar to the preceding games, especially its direct predecessor (in light of being the second entry in the franchise released for the PSX, the first being a port of X3). Once again, Mega Man takes on eight Robot Masters and goes on to raid Wily's fortress as usual.

If you're here for the plot, though, you're missing the point - instead enjoy the impossibly fast action and nifty glitch abuse in this run of the longest presently-TASable game in the main series to date.

Note: The credits are missing due to an emulator glitch. For those who are interested in seeing the credits, check this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8u0vav89bQ4 .

In the past in Mega Man X games, X used to do all the real fighting, while Zero said he was off to destroy power sources, and other such unverifiable tasks. Zero even had the audacity to tell X that one day he'll be as strong as Zero.

This time X lays back and relaxes while letting Zero go put his moneylightsaber where his mouth is. This leaves Zero to fight off an entire army, as well as Sigma. Zero does such a good job showing how incompetent X is, the series has been transformed for TASVideos to be a Zero series from here on out.

This submission saves 12.53 seconds over the previous publication primarily through precise optimization of boss battles.

X decided he's fed up of sitting in the shadow of Zero and shows him how it is done, collecting all items in the process.

X is so excited to be the star for once that he can't stop jumping for joy at the prospect. However, if you still want to get your Zero fix, you can check out the run which doesn't collect all items.

In an effort to avoid the status quo, Capcom decided to experiment, throwing in a leveling system and story-based launch scenarios. Beyond that, it's really just a Mega Man X Zero game.

This is the first in the series to allow character choice before each stage. Zero is chosen as often as possible, which leaves X behind gathering dust. The abusable sword physics highlight Zero's superiority, especially when it is used while standing on the ground. Bosses fall very quickly, even when they have 127 health. See Game Resources and the Author's comments for an explanation of how these tricks work.

There is about 5 minutes of action in this run, which consist mostly of flying through levels and a boss rush on the hardest difficulty mode, Xtreme.

This run is 12.90 seconds faster than the previous run.

We also have a run which completes all stages.

Capcom decided to make some easy money, so they recycled parts of Mega Man X5, threw in overly difficult trial-and-error gameplay, made almost everything an obstacle course, and called it Mega Man X6.

This run uses both X and Zero. Zero's sword physics makes it the ideal boss killer but some bosses have unavoidable invincibility periods, which is why X is sometimes used. The run also obtains a weapon. Zero cannot be obtained right away, but must be obtained by beating a certain boss.

The run uses the hardest difficulty level, Extreme, which would be more appropriately called insane.

This run is an improvement of 19.00 from the previous movie.

Capcom decided to make some easy money, so they recycled parts of Mega Man X5, threw in overly difficult trial-and-error gameplay, made almost everything an obstacle course, and called it Mega Man X6. Rescuing all Reploids on Xtreme mode is inadvisable for all but the most hardcore. Yet this TAS makes it look easy. Not only that, it collects everything that is to be collected before beating the game.

In this run, Rolanmen1 uses additional items and tricks that are not present in the any% or all stages runs, such as X's Blade Armor. Though X still has less screentime than Zero, he is used to his fullest potential in the Gate stages.

X seeks to find the lost Maverick Hunter Zero, who has gone missing since X5. Of course, once found, Zero does most the dirty work, while X is practically nowhere to be found.

This run completes all stages, as opposed to the any% level run. You can see how nasty every level is on Xtreme difficulty. As always, Zero is much better suited to killing bosses than X. Zero also uses powerups which he wouldn't be able to use in an any% run.

Improvements from the previous movie comes from a new trick with X to skip totem poles in Ground Scaravich stage and a route change.

Note: There are encodes of higher resolution in the discussion thread.

Metal Gear Solid was one of the original breakthrough titles in the stealth gaming genre. It follows Solid Snake, a soldier who is infiltrating a nuclear weapons facility on a remote Alaskan island codenamed Shadow Moses Island. Snake must rescue two hostages from the terrorist organization FOXHOUND and stop them from launching a nuclear strike on the United States.

In this run, theenglishman abuses walk-through-walls and weapon glitches to save over 26 minutes from his previous run. Reading the submission comments is recommended.

Monkey Magic is a tie-in game for the PSX based on the anime of the same name. It features a monkey named Kongo, who can move about in the typical platformer manner, as well as cast various magic spells.

The author here uses a variety of tricks to skip parts of the game, and fly over other parts. Monkeys don't have wings, but that doesn't seem to matter here.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero is a story-driven fighting game that casts you in the shoes of Sub-Zero, and chronicles a series of events that occurred prior to Mortal Kombat 1.

In a storyline that is reminiscent of Looking Glass's Thief, the Lin Kuei assassin/thief is sent to steal an important document; this mission proves to be a test from a mysterious character (which turns out to be MK4's Quan Chi) and who charges you upon retrieval of this object to recover an ancient medallion of untold power. However once you retrieve the medallion, Quan Chi reveals that he actually tricked you, and the medallion is the key to awakening the demonic Shinnok (yup, the same baddie from MK4). You must now become a reluctant hero, as you pursue Quan Chi trough hell itself hoping you get to Shinnok before him.

Gameplay wise the game takes the Mortal Kombat familiar 2D fighting environment and turns it into a hybrid fighter/platformer game, where you must travel trough hazardous levels running and jumping around as well as fighting your way against both digitized and polygonal enemies. Sub-Zero's interface is the same as in every MK game, with the addition of a "use" and "turn around" buttons and additions such as an inventory, and a slight RPG twist in which you get exp. for defeating opponents, which translates into new techniques and moves to execute in the game.

Technically speaking this game represents the final evolutionary step in the MK's series 2D engines. New features include zooming, 3D lighting as well as 3D backgrounds and characters, etc.

Once a proud, spiritual people, Mudokons, have largely been reduced to slavery. Now, they are the disposable, abuseable workforce of the Glukkons.

This movie is just as odd as the world it features. Abe for no reason decides to play a baseness upon Glukkons and destroy all the labor force they have industriously collected. No matter it is his own mates who die. No concern he will be milled at the end as well. The only thing he has to say about it is "Oops". "Twisted creep".

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee details the adventures of Abe, a Mudokon, attempting to save his race from slavery and other horrible fates at the hands of the evil Glukkons.

This is the condensed version of a 100% run, in which only one (required) Mudokon is saved. This movie should be perfect for those who don't care about the well-being of the Mudokon race and just want to see some Oddworld parkour. Naturally, this run gets the bad ending.

This run is an improvement of 15:54.23 minutes over Dooty's previous Any% run! The improvement comes from new tricks, different strategies, fewer mistakes and the skipping of some stages.

The movie is slightly shorter than it should be due to emulation-related speedups during screen transitions. The gameplay itself is at mostly the correct speed.

Sorcerer's Maze is a Breakout clone for the PSX. Produced in Japan but only released outside of Japan, it features more power-ups than you can shake a stick at. Giant lasers, tens of balls (or even hundreds, with a strange power-up), stars falling from the sky, and balls nearly as big as the level.

With tool assistance, all of this can be manipulated (to some extent). This run features quite a bit of planning and bonus management, the details of which can be found in the author's comments.

In true platformer-sequel style, Spyro the Dragon's vacation is interrupted by a dinosaur-riding sorceror by the name of Ripto invading the world of Avalar, who naturally needs to be stopped. Since vacation is the paramount concern of Spyro, this is naturally done as quickly as possible without any other concern for the well-being of Avalar.

The author has also done a run for the first game in the series.

Similar to Crash Bandicoot, a sound plugin with less-than-perfect sound reproduction (in particular during cutscenes, including the ending cinematic, which are largely silent) is necessary for the run to sync; do not be alarmed if this occurs in your enjoyment of the movie.

Gnasty Gnorc is mad at the TV, since a reporter said he's not a threat and ugly. Because of that, he decided to trap all of the dragons in crystals. Only Spyro is spared, and he has to free them all.

lapogne36 helps Spyro complete this task as fast as possible by exploiting glitches to boost his speed. You can learn more about this glitch by reading the author's comments.

The author has also done a run for the next game in the series.

Jedi Power Battles is Star-Wars-meets-Double-Dragon with a ton of crazy platforming. The author uses Obi-wan to run through all of Star Wars Episode I, ignoring tons of battle droids and droidekas to get to the final confrontation with Darth Maul. Look for a tribute to SW:EP1 in the final battle!

Also, the author takes an intentional death to make Jar Jar Binks disappear at one point in the run. I'm sure everyone has wished they could die and make Jar Jar disappear, at least once.

Strider 2 (2000) was released by Capcom as a sequel to the original Strider. The main character's appearance is based on Marvel vs. Capcom.

Once more you must kill the Grandmaster Meio armed only with an insanely badass sword and your ninja skills. A very nice demonstration of what happens when a high-reflex game is given tool assistance.

Only the necessary levels are completed in order to reach the final boss.

Note: There is an emulation bug, which makes the character take damage for no apparent reason.

Tomb Raider Chronicles is the fifth game in the Tomb Raider franchise, and was released in 2000. The game takes place in the memories of three of Lara Croft's best friends, since she is presumed dead after the events of Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation.

The author, Wyster, abused multiple glitches to put his own twist on these memories of Lara.

Umihara Kawase Shun (1997) is the little known sequel to the little known Umihara Kawase for the SNES. The game adheres to the same exact formula: a little schoolgirl uses her trusty rubber wire physics simulating engine fishing rod to escape another trippy world of mutated fish. (Oh, the kids these days!..)

This time, with PlayStation's superior screen resolution, even more delicious fish can go through your screen at once as the author shoots through the game following the shortest known path.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories is a card based video game. The rules are one of the simplified prototypes made while developing the trading card game from the manga. The player controls Yugi; who pieces together the millienium puzzle, travels to ancient Egypt, and defeats evil.

In this run, Hoandjzj uses fusion to over power the enemies. Using luck manipulation to get better cards and avoid some of the most challenging card of the oppenents. The chances for manipulation are limited and often take the form of attacking first with a weak monster before a monster that could have one-shot the opponent. The first battle can't be won, so it becomes a race to lose quickly.

Please read the welcome page if you haven't already done so. It explains the rules and methods that apply to all of these movies, particularly the use of savestates and frame advance. Also refer to our Glossary to understand terms we use, such as TAS or other unfamiliar terms.
