Final Doom is a Doom game that uses the engine, items, and characters from Doom II: Hell on Earth, distributed officially by id. It is meant as a sequel to the events of Doom II and includes two sets of levels, TNT: Evilution and The Plutonia Experiment.

This run by Clumsydoomer beats The Plutonia Experiment using Skill 4, Ultra-Violence. This is the most common skill level used in the Doom speedrunning and TAS community.

And yet, the answers given... are not exactly what you'd expect.

Everyone who has at least once attempted to gather a soul from each of the 120 enemies in Aria of Sorrow, especially during a speedrun, knows the frustration it incurs after a hundredth failed attempt to get the required drop. Even TASers who were trying their hand at this category since 2006 had to put their progress on hiatus due to the amount of luck manipulation going on in nearly every room.

But all that only made the awaited result sweeter, as this first complete all-souls TAS beats the game on Hard mode in less than half an hour without even using glitch warps.

However, if you would like to see the game beaten to a pulp in a mere quarter of this time, don't miss the glitched TAS by klmz.

Note: while the movie doesn't use the glitch warps (neither by death nor by getting out-of-bounds using transform souls), it does use the normal warp rooms present in the castle. Starting from reset was necessary to take advantage of using Hard mode; it is normally not allowed — refer to the rules to see our reasons.

Everyone who has at least once attempted to gather a soul from each of the 120 different enemies in Aria of Sorrow, especially during a speedrun, knows the frustration it incurs after a hundredth failed attempt to get the required drop. That just makes this all-souls TAS, played on hard mode and without using glitch warps in a little less than 25 minutes, even more impressive.

Upon completing his warpless run, Kriole decided to take another jab at this category, improving upon his earlier effort by 51 seconds.

However, if you would like to see the game beaten to a pulp in a mere quarter of this time, don't miss the any% run by klmz.

That just makes this all-souls TAS, played on hard mode, even more impressive.

Contrary to the previous publication, which used no glitch warps (either by death or by getting out-of-bounds using transform souls), this run makes extensive use of them, knocking off 6 minutes and 10.84 seconds of it. However, the previous publication is still worth a watch, as it demonstrates how such a run would look like if no glitch warps were used.

If you would like to see the game beaten even faster, don't miss the any% run by klmz.

Disappointed with good movies where characters move just too slowly?

Look no further! In this extremely high-speed run, Mukki demonstrates how to break the sound barrier and why Sonic is the fastest character in the video game universe.

Mukki's TAS improves the previous run by 43.18 seconds. Individual act improvements are listed in the submission text.

The author doesn't collect any of the Chaos Emeralds in this movie, but it demonstrates almost every single move that Sonic is capable of in this game.

Originally meant as a sequel to the Super Mario Land games, Wario Land eventually proved popular enough in its own right to launch its own series.

Wario, having been kicked out of Mario's castle in his first appearance, decides, in his eternal greed, to search for a statue stolen by the nefarious Captain Syrup and the Black Sugar Gang. This would normally involve questing for hidden treasures and collecting as many coins as he can possibly amass along the way.

Here, however, Wario decides this isn't worth his time and proceeds as quickly as possible towards the final confrontation — going so far as to skip entire levels and otherwise make a mockery of the game engine.

This movie is a 7:35.61 improvement over the previous movie thanks to even more level skipping and further optimization of levels.

Gunstar Heroes (1993) is widely considered to be one of the best action games on the Sega Genesis, but, ironically, was commercially unsuccessful due to poor promotion. It features a variety of melee attacks, as well as 4 basic weapons which can be combined in pairs (making a total of 14 combinations) — all densely packed in a swift and explosion-heavy gameplay spanning over seven uniquely designed stages. The author takes special care to showcase all the moves the game is capable of, using every possible attack and having lots of fun playing around in autoscrolling sections.

This movie is 3 minutes longer than the previous one due to playing on hardest difficulty and using both Gunstars at the same time. See the author's comments for more details.

The encodes for this movie are also slightly larger than usual — this is due to an amount of colors and on-screen motion even the best codecs have problems coping with.

arkiandruski has provided an audio commentary for this movie, available here. He watches his run's encode and speaks along, play back your own copy as you listen to him.

Ludicrous-speed bouncing around. Completed without collecting any emeralds, with both Sonic and Tails controlled by the player.

This run takes everything you know about Sonic and Knuckles and turns it upside-down. It extensively uses the "scroll objects offscreen to pass through them" trick to zip and warp to places that shouldn't be reached, break bosses, and effectively skip entire stages.

It is worth noting that nitsuja did not directly participate in the creation of this movie; instead, Upthorn incorporated newly discovered tricks in several stages and spliced them in for a total improvement of 49 seconds.

This run takes everything you know about Sonic and Knuckles and turns it upside-down. It extensively uses the "scroll objects offscreen to pass through them" trick to zip and warp to places that shouldn't be reached, break bosses, and effectively skip entire stages.

It is worth noting that Nitsuja and Upthorn did not directly participate in the creation of this movie; instead, marzojr incorporated newly discovered tricks in several stages and spliced them in for a total improvement of 46 seconds.

The publisher wishes to note that any attempts to upload the official encode to Dailymotion has resulted in failure, we suggest you watch the YouTube video instead. An unofficial Dailymotion upload using a different but publish worthy encode can be found here instead. We apologize for any inconvenience.

This movie is quite probably the best illustration of a tool-assisted speedrun there is.

Ludicrous-speed bouncing around. Completed without collecting any emeralds, with Sonic and Tails.

This run takes everything you know about Sonic and Knuckles and turns it upside-down. It extensively uses the "scroll objects offscreen to pass through them" trick to warp to places that shouldn't be reached, break bosses, and nearly skip entire stages. The total time saved totals to an impressive ten minutes over the previous movie by SprintGod.

As usual, we recommend reading the author's comments of this movie.

At first there were 70 stars because Bowser demanded it. Then there were 16 stars because MIPS the rabbit demanded it. Then there was 1 star because Bowser's Sub demanded it. Now there are none because the viewers are impatient and demanded the game be quicker.

As with many other runs on this site, the goal of pure speed has resulted in the complete breaking of the game. Very little of the game's normal play remains. If you'd like to see more of what Super Mario 64 offers, see the 120 stars run.

This movie is 20 frames faster than the previous movie due to a new route and extreme optimization, explained in the submission message.

Super Mario 64 has a history of publications on this site. If you wish to see how it unfolded since the beginning, see the page SM64TASHistory. Also, if you have a hankering to see MIPs the rabbit, the 16 stars route has been improved.

Ever wonder if Mario was actually a ninja wearing blue overalls? Now you know.

This run completes the game after collecting a mere 16 stars. It was originally intended that the player collect a minimum of 70 to finish, but a few bugs allow Mario to pass through doors and barriers that require a minimum number of stars to open.

Mario has a very wide range of skills for mobility and some of the physics of this game are easily abused by an experienced player.

Arkanoid (1987) strongly resembles the arcade game Breakout (1976). In Arkanoid, the paddle is actually a spaceship, and the bricks are space walls. The goal of the game is to break through the space walls and defeat the villainous Doh in order to escape from the space labyrinth.

This incredible TAS of Arkanoid, made by Genisto, inspires awe in a manner comparable to adelikat's Gradius movie. No ball is ever lost, even though three balls are juggled in almost every level.

This movie is 3 minutes and 6 seconds faster than the movie of the previous author, Feitclub. It looks really great.

Note: Hitler no Fukkatsu and Bionic Commando are not the same game.
Selected quotes from Feitclub:
"Major differences include:
-"HnF" has more enemies in every stage, and more obstacles along the way. For example, there are land mines in Area 7 and giant spiders in some neutral areas. Also, I believe the patterns of the enemy attack trucks are different, because I seemed to encounter them more often in this game despite using the same route as "BC."
-All references to Nazis and all swastikas were removed from "BC." The evil leader of "the Badds" was re-named "Master-D." Graphically, however, he is undeniably Adolf Hitler in both versions. This resulted in quite a shock to me as a child!"

Resurrection of Hitler: Top Secret (ヒットラーの復活) is the original (Japanese) version of Bionic Commando. It is a platform game with a hero who can't jump but can quickly latch onto objects with his bionic arm. One can guess from the game's title that the hero's objective is to end the Nazi's efforts to resurrect Adolf Hitler.

This TAS is about 0.5 seconds faster than the previous version; it merely changes some very minor parts.

Note: Hitler no Fukkatsu and Bionic Commando are not the same game. According to Feitclub, major differences include:

  • "HnF" has more enemies in every stage, and more obstacles along the way. For example, there are land mines in Area 7 and giant spiders in some neutral areas. Also, I believe the patterns of the enemy attack trucks are different, because I seemed to encounter them more often in this game despite using the same route as "BC."

The original Castlevania is set in the year 1691. Simon Belmont must fight his way through the castle and destroy Count Dracula.

Morrison's Castlevania TAS is about 4 seconds faster than Phil's previous version. Like the precedent movie, this movie uses several techniques for speed:

  • (Ab)using monsters as a platform for shortcuts
  • Optimized usage of weapons
  • Luck abuse for items (Ⅱ and Ⅲ)
  • (Ab)using the main character as a critical hit weapon at bosses
  • Using bottles to restrain and pass through enemies
And standard optimizations such as not using stairs when jumping is possible.

The improvement consists mostly of new weapon strategy, and of systematic utilization of the multiple-targets-multiple-damage glitch, which enables enemies to receive damage at a much faster rate than is normal ― even to share the pain of the player character.

Note: Although this run's time is listed as 7 seconds faster than the previous time, it is partly because of a way to end the input a few seconds earlier than before as opposed to reducing the length of the movie as a whole. Thus, the movie file is 7 seconds shorter, while the encodes are only 4 seconds shorter.

Phil Côté's new Castlevania movie ― about 2 seconds faster than the previous version by Phil and Genisto. Also features a higher final score.

  • Optimized usage of weapons
  • Luck abuse for items (Ⅱ and Ⅲ) ― nearly impossible to duplicate
  • (Ab)using the main character as a critical hit weapon at bosses
  • Using bottles to restrain and pass through enemies

Gimmick! is a very short game that was only released in Japan and Europe. It's about a small green creature who can summon stars to help him defeat monsters and to use them as platforms to reach high places and travel fast.

Aglar improves on the previous submission by about 33 seconds. Improvements come from new and increased glitch abuse, better precision, and using lots of new strategies.

This movie here does not collect the special items required to access the secret 7th level which the other Gimmick!-run does.

On this site, we make perfect movies, and then we surpass them. Of course, if we can surpass them, they were not perfect in the first place, but who would have known?

This movie, played by Bisqwit and AngerFist, surpasses the previous Rockman movie by about 48 seconds. All stages were improved by at least half a second, and two stages were improved by more than 10 seconds.

A lot of wall-crossing techniques are used in this movie. Way more than before. It is very difficult for even an expert player to comprehend what’s going on in this movie.

Most of the new strategies come from FinalFighter. Some came from Morimoto. Huge thanks to both of them. A few were discovered by AngerFist and Bisqwit during the making of the movie.

The foundation of all of the techniques used in this movie are explained at Rockman Tricks, but the applications are myriad and complicated. Some of the applications are explained at FinalFighter’s website, but in Japanese.

More detailed information regarding the making of this movie is available at the submission comments page. More tools were used in the making of this movie than in the making of any other movie before this.

Note: This movie was made with the USA version, although the previous movie used the Japanese version. The versions are mostly identical ― in fact this movie plays without desync with either version until the last battle. To play it properly to the end, use the USA version.

On this site, we make perfect movies, and then we surpass them. Of course, if we can surpass them, they were not perfect in the first place, but who would have known?

When "perfection" is defined as "as fast as possible", it requires some sacrifices. Indeed, this movie sacrifices a lot in the playability of the game. Full of tricks to pass through walls, tricks to avoid mandatory battles, tricks to pass through enemies relatively unharmed, tricks to acquire weapon refills in little time — there is very little in this movie left that resembles normal playing. Even death is used as a viable playing strategy that saves time. All of the tricks are still performed by the means of mere controller input, even though portions of the input were calculated by a computer program (approximately 26 seconds in total).

Those who have watched previous Rockman (Mega Man) TAS releases from this site may fast-forward directly to Wily 2. Most of the new stuff happens there now. One can find a technical explanation in the discussion thread.

This movie completes the game about 10 seconds faster than the previous version.

Note: This movie works on both the US and Japanese versions.

Once again, this was proven to be the general direction on this site. This movie is an update to the previous movie by Bisqwit and AngerFist, surpassing the previous version by about 22 seconds. Most of this improvement is caused by an esoteric death shortcut in Wily4 stage. For the first time, all robot master refights are skipped entirely.

A lot of wall-crossing techniques are used in this movie. It is very difficult for even an expert player to comprehend what’s going on in this movie.

Metroid completed as fast as possible without holding back, and without concern for game sanity.

Uses a game restart sequence (up+a on the second controller) to save time in backtracking.

Much of this 34-second improvement comes from taking an unexpected route through Kraid's lair: the doors are tricked into teleporting Samus to different rooms with the help of the door glitch. Another substantial improvement came from using a new strategy in the statue room.

Metroid is a game that is very hard to play perfectly fast because the jumping is so slow.

This movie is 43.3 seconds faster than the previous version.

Selected comments from the author:
Main improvements in this version:

  • Almost every room played more precisely
  • The first vertical shaft is many seconds faster
  • Missiles are used more aggressively early
  • Vertical shaft from Hell (Kraid's Lair) improved again
  • Sped up clearing the blocks in the small vertical shaft leading to Kraid's Lair
  • Shortcut into Tourian is the most improved section timewise
  • The 5 Zeebetites were destroyed quicker
  • New strategy against Mother Brain

Most Metroid speedruns used to be about 30-40 minutes long.

Rockman 4 Minus Infinity is the most extensive Mega Man 4 hack in existence, and probably one of the most extensive hacks of any NES game in existence.

It features heavily reworked weapons, brand new weapons, new items, all-new boss patterns, and brand new stages with new music and entirely new gimmicks. All kinds of obstacles, enemies, bosses and minibosses have been taken from other games from the series, including the Game Boy series and even the SNES and PSX games. It must all be seen to be believed.

This run improves the author's previous run by 3:12.51 through a new route, new glitches and better optimization.

This movie is different from the other Rygar movie in that it plays all levels and doesn't use the death-at-boss-warp glitch.

This movie makes full use of all the bugs and glitches in the game which can be used to speed up the run, except the death glitch. If you are wondering what the heck is going on in this movie, see the Rygar Tricks page for some info about the tricks used.

Note: This PAL game movie was erroneously recorded with the NTSC setting, resulting in 16.7% too fast playback. Thus the AVI is significantly faster than the movie should actually be. The real length is 20:27, that is 40 seconds faster than the previous version.

This movie completes the PAL Rygar with only one item: the grappling hook.

And what an awesome movie it is: it demonstrates as many glitches of the game as possible. Some of the glitches save time radically, some save a little of time, and some don't save time at all but just look cool.

It uses death as a shortcut, but in contrary to the usual, this death does not put Rygar backwards in the game, but instead warps him forward by a couple of levels.
A somewhat similar trick can be done in Mega Man 2, but in Rygar, it places him truely in the next level instead of just virtually.

We recommend reading the author's comments.

It is 130 frames (2.17 seconds) faster than the previous version, which was already thought to be perfect.

Even in simple-looking games you can always find more time-saving tricks to exploit if you look hard enough. See what we've found at the Super Mario Bros. Tricks page.

This movie also gets as many coins and kills as many enemies as possible without losing speed.

Three glitches were used to save time.
In addition to the wall jump and alternate pipe glitches in 8-4 that were also done in the previous version, the vine in 4-2 was used to do a teleportation glitch, followed by an alternate pipe glitch used to get to the warp zone faster.
8-4 was completed with 315 timeunits left (1 timeunit faster than the previous version).

The delay involving fancy jumping at the end of 8-3 was to avoid the fireworks that come when the timer ends with a 3.

A new tool-assisted record time at Super Mario Bros. The length is 4:59.92 (17995 frames), from power on to ending the input. Axe is touched at frame number 18012 (5:00.20).
It is 64 frames (1.07 seconds) faster than the previous version.

Selected quotes from the authors:
We sincerely thank Mana for showing us some strategies. It helps us in this version. Also, thanks to Michael Fried, his video inspires me to collect some more points where Mana failed to achieve.

Bowser has kidnapped the princess (again) and Mario must save the day. But this time through, he takes a stroll. Nothing bothers Mario as he walks through all the stages, sometimes backwards, on his way to save the princess.

This movie obsoletes HappyLee's walkathon, since it completes all of this game's stages without using any warps. This movie demonstrates the possibility to complete every single stage without pressing the B button. Having been bothered by the lack of running and shooting in this game, the ending outright asks the player to press B.

This game is actually Super Mario USA, the game which was crafted from the Japanese game "Doki Doki Panic".

This is the fastest seen Super Mario Bros 2 timeattack so far. It has been a long road from Bisqwit's first Luigi-only done-fast movie (11:36) to this Genisto's Mario+Luigi+Toad timeattack (12 seconds faster than the previous version by Sleepz), and the result is totally incredible. Have we reached the perfection yet?

This movie also demonstrates many funny glitches in the game - some of which may be documented at the Super Mario Bros. Tricks 2 page.

Once again, Genisto manages to perform a complete jaw-dropper.

Most of us knew that Genisto has been working on an improved SMB2 movie, but I don't think anyone could have expected the improvement to be seventeen seconds!

This is definitely a must-watch.

On this site, we are often seeking for the answer to the question: "What is the fastest time game X can be completed in?" And every time the question is asked, the answer changes.

That's what has happened once again. Sleepz has bested Genisto's jawdropper by amazing 20 seconds by not only using the up+down trick in ladders, but some other new techniques too.
What is the next answer?

Once again, Genisto has surpassed the presumed limit of tool-assisted SMB3 speedrunning.

The differences between the Japanese and USA versions of SMB3 entail a few seconds of change, but most of this 19-second improvement's enhancement is because of Mario's passing through walls in the final fortress ― a trick that was discovered by Bisqwit.

There are also some other new strategies that Genisto uses in this movie. Once again, of course, Genisto has acquired 99+ extra lives magnificently.

Surprise Super Mario Bros 3. improvement from nowhere!

Apparently, the team of adelikat, Deign, Cardboard and JXQ had been working some time on this movie, which improves the previous movie by some 5.5 seconds (no small feat at this point), due to a wide variety of different improvements discussed in the submission message.

And of course, a wadload of extra lives are again achieved in the mandatorily slow autoscrolling levels.

For those that still prefer to see 99+ lives, the authors have also put together an alternate run that sacrifices time in order to gain those extra lives.

Looking for the famous Super Mario Bros 3 timeattack by もりもと (Morimoto)?
This isn't it.
This is Genisto's version, which beats Morimoto's version in the following aspects:
- is 10 seconds faster!
- has better high score!
and also, when compared to Michael Fried's run:
- collects 5 coins more!
It's sort of an improved hybrid of those two movies.

Not only is it amazingly fast, it also manages to get 99 extra lives while waiting.

Legend of Zelda (ゼルダの伝説) is an adventure game that easily takes you days to beat.
Its world is so huge and full of obscure secrets that without great deal of planning you won't make it in less than many hours.

This movie was planned together by many masterminds at the TASVideos forum - primarily Michael Fried, Ramzi and Sleepz.
We were aiming for a sub-30 minutes movie, then for a sub-29 minutes movie. I decided to publish anything that goes under 28 minutes. And here we are, under 27 minutes - 4:33 faster than the previous version!

The Up+A trick (save and restart) was used in this movie several times. It was judged to be acceptable because it's mentioned in the instruction booklet of the game, and is a part of normal playing.

This video is certainly quite a surprise to anyone who has used hours and hours exploring the Hyrule world. :)

The Legend of Zelda (ゼルダの伝説) is an adventure game that needs no introduction to most NES players.

It is a large game that normally takes days to beat, but at TASVideos, we often reduce games to the minimum necessary in order to complete them.

This is the sixth The Legend of Zelda TAS at this site (not counting the alternate movies), and is ~86 seconds faster than the previous movie, largely due to better optimization and manipulation of item drops.

You can watch this run played back on a real NES console.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is the first installment of the Castlevania series on PSX. Follow Dracula's son Alucard as he glitches through the castle on a quest to end his father's life.

This run is played on a Replay save file (not newgame+ because neither experience nor items are carried over) using the Luck Mode command. Using Replay allows the player to skip most cutscenes and alters what the librarian can sell. Using Luck Mode lowers the player's base strength which, among other changes, ironically makes the run faster by enabling a route filled with kicking enemies that wouldn't be possible otherwise.

This run is about twenty seconds faster than the previous version due to a changed route that makes different use of glitches. More details can be found in the author's comments.

A 100% run covering the whole castle is also available. If you want to see a run that starts from a clean save, you may enjoy this run. If you prefer the main character to have muscular bare arms and pray to the rain gods to defeat bosses, you may enjoy the Richter version.

While Chrono Trigger (1995) usually takes days to complete, inichi decided he'd rather not have to sit through all the unnecessary stuff, like long cutscenes, unskippable boss fights and key plot events, so he did it in 21 minutes instead. "Big deal!", you might say — until you realize he didn't use NewGame+. Pick your jaw up off the floor!

As Bisqwit puts it: Who needs strategy when you can just blast yourself through the wafers of the universe?

Donkey Kong's been kidnapped and old Cranky Kong insists that Diddy collect a bunch of coins that say "DK" on them. These goals are sufficiently compatible that Diddy and Dixie decide to get a little bit sidetracked on their rescue plan.

The main improvement in this movie comes from using Hard Mode. That means there are no DK Barrels lying around the stages. Also, whenever you start a level or sucessfully complete a bonus, you'll have both Kongs, which allows for more places to sacrifice a Kong and save time. By playing in this mode, 53.71 seconds were saved compared to its predecessor.

Note: this run was made using the input of the old movie from Comicalflop and NxCy, and improvements were spliced in by Dooty.

Donkey Kong's been kidnapped and old Cranky Kong insists that Diddy collect a bunch of coins that say "DK" on them. These goals are sufficiently compatible that Diddy and Dixie decide to get a little bit sidetracked on their rescue plan.

This run abuses a lot of bugs with regard to motion and collision detection. Read the authors' submission to learn more.

This run improves the previous one by more than 5 minutes thanks to new tricks, new glitches, and greater precision.

Rockman & Forte (ロックマン&フォルテ), known as Megaman & Bass in the western world, used to be the last game chronologically released for the original Rockman/Megaman series, until Rockman & Forte Mirai kara no Chōsensha (ロックマン&フォルテ 未来からの挑戦者) was released on the WonderSwan handheld system.

This time around, Wily has his own creation turned against him, allowing you to play as Megaman or a bad guy!

This run uses only Rockman, however, and collects all 100 CDs, which is not intended to be possible using only one character. Then again, many things happen that were not intended to be possible.

Originally thought to be an April Fools joke, it turns out that Capcom really did hide a one-hit-kills weapon in Mega Man X. That platform in Armored Armadillo's stage always did seem a little strange.

Unlike the later games, collecting the Hadoken is much more time consuming compared to the ability to obliterate the mandatory Reploid rematches and fortress bosses. Nevertheless this run is still faster than the first any% run ever published.

Hetfield managed to improve the previous run by 35.2 seconds, thanks to a better usage of a the phantom grab glitch. More info about this glitch can be read in the submission text.

If you want to see more of the blue-clad hero, we recommend watching the any% run.

One person's silly idea is another person's inspiration.

This movie is essentially constructed by taking one controller and wiring it into two SNES emulators at once. The same input is used to play both games to completion. In other words, the player plays two games simultaneously with one controller.

Note: There is a visual anomaly during the battle with Serges in X 2. This is an emulator bug relating to the Cx4 chip used in the Mega Man X 2 cartridge.

If you like this movie, be sure to check out the movie that even beats four games with one controller!

Mega Man X2 makes a particularly interesting run as there are many weapons that can be used to increase mobility. These include a grappling hook, a fast mid-air dash and a weapon that can transform enemies into platforms. The authors take special care to ensure that when there is a situation in which a weapon could help them progress quicker, they make use of it.

This run improves the previous version by about 23 seconds of game-time. The previous run used the Japanese ROM, and the shorter cutscenes in that version make the improvement less apparent.

This movie aims for the fastest time possible. However, because the shōryūken (flame uppercut) used towards the end of the movie saves so much time, and because to get it the authors must first collect 100% of items such as Heart Tanks, Sub Tanks, and Item Capsules, this movie could be seen as a 100% run. Zero Parts are not required for the shōryūken, and thus they are not collected.

If you would like to watch this game played collecting Zero's parts, but not collecting any of X's, see this run.

The page Mega Man X Tricks explains some of the tricks that can be used in the X series games.

Mega Man X2 makes a particularly interesting run as many of the weapons can actually be used in mobility, such as a grappling hook or even a weapon which can make enemies into platforms. The author takes special care to ensure that when there is a situation in which a weapon would help him progress quicker, he uses it.

In order to get the Shouryuken (flame uppercut) seen used towards the end of the movie, the author must first collect 100% of items, such as Heart Tanks, Sub Tanks, and Item Capsules. However, because these powerups are not far out of the way, and because the Shouryuken saves so much time later on, it turns out that this movie may also prove to be as fast as possible.

Another movie that's so fast you can hardly see what's going on. The main character can use his rocket dash to inflict a lot of damage on his opponents as well as bounce off walls and ceilings. Cpadolf's movie is an incredible improvement to nitsuja's movie, which was itself 5 minute improvement to previously published version. Cutting off 80 seconds from that TAS was certainly no easy task. Like the previous movie, this is played at the hardest difficulty, crazy hard.

This movie utilizes all of the tricks found in the Super Mario World tricks section in addition to new recently discovered tricks to beat the previous movie by 48.6 seconds. See the author's comments for more details.

Arguably one of the most well known and well developed SNES hacks in existence, Super Demo World puts Mario into a new realm that spans well beyond his original adventure.

Features of Super Demo World include:

  • Ability to store more unconventional items in the reserve box, such as a koopa, springboard, message box, or vine
  • 120 exits in total, including two secret worlds
  • Creative and challenging level design, with some puzzle elements thrown in
  • "New" graphics (mostly backgrounds taken from other games, such as Donkey Kong Country 3 and Mega Man X)

To see a much shorter run completing the minimum number of stages, see this run.

This is the 11th published movie of Super Mario World that beats the game by clearing 11 of the 96 exits, the shortest route intended by the game developers. This movie seems to be slower than the previous publication. However, barring emulation differences, this movie's in fact faster by 0.21 seconds, clocking at just less than 10 minutes. Ironically, Mario still dies in the process.

Not much is different from the previous publication, except for:

  • Grabbing a mushroom in Yoshi's Island 2 instead of Yoshi's Island 1, thus saving time;
  • Better block duplication in Yoshi's Island 3;
  • A potentially more entertaining Big Boo fight.

We recommend reading the authors' comments for more details.

There are also movies of this game that trigger the credits early, clear all 96 exits, clear as many exits as possible as small Mario and write a program using the game's code.

Super Mario World is a game which needs no introduction.

This movie beats the previous SMW movie by a mere 3 seconds. Strategically, this is very similar to the previous movie, but a new technique which involves keeping flight status through doors and pipes saved the majority of the time. This game is now extremely tightly optimized to minimize lag between levels.

This movie is a joint venture between Fabian and JXQ, but small and big optimizations were contributed by several people: skamastaG, thegreginator, mrz, jimsfriend, Flagitious and Arne_the_great.

This movie beats the previous SMW movie by mere 4 seconds ― which is a lot considering how the difference was gained.

This is the 10th published movie of Super Mario World that beats the game by clearing 11 of the 96 exits, the shortest route intended by the game developers. Of all the previous movies, not one had obsoleted its predecessor by more than 15 seconds. This movie sets a new record by beating the previous movie by 22.68 seconds and clocking in under 10 minutes. Ironically, Mario dies in the process.

The authors of this movie have found (more) new glitches to save time. The notable differences in gameplay are:

  • Plays a level which was not previously played (Yoshi's Island 1)
  • Skips Iggy's Castle
  • Optimizes Bowser fight
We recommend reading the author's comments to understand how the new glitches are used in this movie.

There are also movies of this game that trigger the credits early, clear all 96 exits, clear as many exits as possible as small Mario, and write a program using the game's code.

Based loosely on the plot of the movie of the same name, this game is about a man named Stanley Ipkiss, who finds a powerful mask known as The Mask. However, the evil Dorian Tyrell has also become aware of this and kidnaps his girlfriend in order to obtain it.

One of the traits The Mask seems to give Stanley is extreme speed, so naturally, aside from a couple of boss fights, the gameplay is extremely fast throughout the movie. The Mask also has a variety of special powers, most of which are seen in this run. These powers cost M points to use, which have to be managed carefully over the stage.

This run is an improvement over the previous one due to general optimizations and better use of glitches. Those who watched the previous run should especially see the massive improvement to the sewer stage.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is one of the most diverse games of the series in terms of characters and play modes.

The author takes advantage of this and the shape-shifting character Shang Tsung to give us an exceptional playaround movie. Bugs, easter eggs and impossible combos are shown off at a breathtaking pace. The movie features a mix of 1 and 2 player play for added variety.

This little-known Japanese wire-action platformer, with a very well-made rubber wire physics simulating engine, sports a schoolgirl setting out to rid the world of giant mutant fish.

The game is very easy to win, but very difficult to play (try it). This video demonstrates one of the fastest paths to the ending, including quite a few almost impossible maneuvers ― whether playing tool-assisted or not.

This video is a 6 seconds improvement to the previous version.

See the Umihara Kawase page for more information about this game, and the author's comments for more information about this movie.

This game is about a schoolgirl with a bag of holding and a rubber fishing line setting out to rid the world of giant mutant fish.

Actually, it's more like a little-known Japanese wire-action platformer (like Bionic Commando or Ninja Five-O) with a small but rabid fan following. Like Ikaruga, the game is very easy to win, but very difficult to play. This video demonstrates one of the fastest paths to the ending, including quite a few almost impossible maneuvers - whether playing tool-assisted or not.

This video is a 4 seconds improvement to the previous version.

See the Umihara Kawase page for more information about this game.

Ps: If the SMV desyncs for you, first ensure you have the correct ROM and that you don't have sound disabled. If it still desyncs, ensure that you don't load the movie as soon as the emulator has started: give it a few seconds first.

Bisqwit: For extra fun, get your hands on this game and try playing it. You'll quickly learn what "almost impossible maneuvers" means :)

Rosenkreuzstilette (ローゼンクロイツスティレッテ) is a platform game published by independent Japanese studio [erka:es]. Gameplay resembles a Mega Man clone, with Spiritia collecting various weapons from each boss defeated, and alternate protagonist Grolla playing more like Zero from the Mega Man X and Mega Man Zero series.

See how many things from different Mega Man games you can spot while watching this! Stage by stage notes are in the author's comments.

This movie uses Grolla. For more action, we also have a Spiritia movie by the same author.

In VVVVVV, the player controls Captain Viridian, who is lost in an alternate dimension, in search of the missing members of the spaceship's crew. Instead of jumping, the player is able to control the direction of gravity, allowing Captain Viridian to flip between the floors and ceilings of the environment. The graphical style of the game is heavily influenced by the Commodore 64.

In this run, Masterjun blazes to the ending in less than 13 minutes (12:33 according to the in-game timer), skips the fearsome Gravitron, and rescues the crew in a fraction of the length of the ship's regulated lunch break.

This run avoids using glitches that require pressing the Escape key. There is also a run that uses these glitches to beat the game even faster.

Please read the welcome page if you haven't already done so. It explains the rules and methods that apply to all of these movies, particularly the use of savestates and frame advance. Also refer to our Glossary to understand terms we use, such as TAS or other unfamiliar terms.
