In the revolutionary 3D debut for the Legend of Zelda series, Link must travel around the colourful land of Hyrule and awaken six Sages in order to save it from the evil Ganondorf.

This movie uses a variety of sequence breaks and shortcuts to complete the game using a minimal number of inventory and quest items. Even the most experienced OoT players are sure to find surprise in what is skippable in this game.

Also, JXQ has provided some interesting commentary on the movie. It might make the movie more entertaining.

NOTE: There is a short delay in the game every time the pause menu is entered. The delay is a known bug in the emulation and can't be avoided.

And here's another classic, for an obsolete but entertaining run. Commentary link

Earthbound is a great RPG, designed by Shigesato Itoi in 1994-1995, and is also known by the name Mother 2.

It is best described as "random", in a good way. The game has a great emphasis on a humor, and indeed many things in the game are almost caricatured, from subplots to characters. It also has a versatile soundtrack.

Although this being a speedrun (tool-assisted at that), most of the plot of the game is intact, making this movie very entertaining to watch even as a TAS.
Details about each scene and decision in this movie can be read in the authors' comments.

This movie does not use a death as a shortcut. Although that was a conscious decision by the authors, what it actually means was bent to the extreme.

  • The main protagonist, Ness, suffers a mortal blow once. Due to how the game works, he did not die.
  • A teddy bear was disintegrated in a battle. Although a party member, it was an inanimate object, and cannot be counted as "death".
  • Near the end of the movie, a death-like event is part of the game plot.

A slightly new commentary, done by the author. Commentary link

Gunstar Heroes (1993) is widely considered to be one of the best action games on the Sega Genesis, but, ironically, was commercially unsuccessful due to poor promotion. It features a variety of melee attacks, as well as 4 basic weapons which can be combined in pairs (making a total of 14 combinations) — all densely packed in a swift and explosion-heavy gameplay spanning over seven uniquely designed stages. The author takes special care to showcase all the moves the game is capable of, using every possible attack and having lots of fun playing around in autoscrolling sections.

This movie is 3 minutes longer than the previous one due to playing on hardest difficulty and using both Gunstars at the same time. See the author's comments for more details.

The AVI for this movie is also slightly larger than usual — this is due to an amount of colors and on-screen motion even the best codecs have problems coping with.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. According to the author, This run aims to complete all dungeons/temples/Ganon trials as quickly as possible.

As such, it is a slight deviation from the usual "complete the game as fast as possible without any regard to the plot" theme. Slight, because it still does things in the wrong order.

This movie contains several new glitches that are not used in the aims-for-fastest-time TAS that we have on this site. As a bonus, a special high-quality cel-shaded video is provided for your viewing pleasure in mkv format. If you encounter problems viewing it, please check the Downloads page.

Banjo-Kazooie is a game that needs little introduction. For those of you who need one, the bear-bird team of Banjo and Kazooie are searching for Jiggys (Jigsaw puzzle pieces) to unlock doors and save Banjo's sister from a rhyming witch. Even though Banjo's name is first, Kazooie ends up doing most of the heavy lifting as new skills are developed.

This run collects all 100 Jiggys hidden throughout the game and ends with the in-game clock reading 2:00:28.

Comicalflop has provided an interesting commentary on the run. It might help explain some of the tricks and make the movie more enjoyable to watch.

Magician is an adventure game featuring a hero simply named 'Paul'. Paul is a mage with a bottomless stomach, constantly a scratch away from starvation and death.

FatRatKnight gets around his insane hunger pains and cruises his way to the best ending possible with only one playthrough of the game primarily thanks to the UNKNOWN spell. Normally this has a high chance of killing Paul in some of the most gruesome or comical ways possible, but instead it is manipulated to heal him.

'Lagrange Point' (ラグランジュポイント), is a very late (as in, released in 1991) Japanese-only RPG produced for the NES. This game is notable because Konami teamed up with readers of Family Computer Magazine (ファミリーコンピュータマガジン) to form a group, called 芸夢工房 (geimukoubou, art dream workshop), in order to make this game. The readers were permitted to design the characters, monsters, events, message-texts, music, the title-screen, and such. With enhanced sound for the NES due to Konami's VRC7 sound generator Integrated Circuit, the game is considered a masterpiece to many Japanese people.

The story is about a pilot, Jin (also known as Gin), who is exploring a biohazard outbreak at a space colony, linked to the disappearance of Dr. Stolte. He arrives, only for the spaceship to be attacked. The effect of the outbreak soon becomes clear.

More information on the game can be found on the Japanese Wikipedia (machine translation).

This run features commentary in the form of Advanced SubStation Alpha soft subtitles created by FractalFusion and the author, neo_omegon. If you use MPlayer to view the MKV, add the -ass option to the commandline to view the subtitles with their proper layout.

Meet Paul -- A guy who starves to death five minutes after a grand meal. He also feels experienced from doing trivial things like entering a store or delivering mail.

While many heroes would depend on hours of fighting for experience, Paul instead gets his experience from those trivial things in order to defeat Abadon in a timely manner. Best ending requires all such trivial tasks done, ensuring you see Paul gaining experience from delivering a letter or talking to a tree.

Along the way, there are vicious enemies who beat up Paul. Being in a hurry, Paul doesn't stop for them, preferring to use the UNKNOWN spell to patch himself up. Normally this has a high chance of killing Paul in some of the most gruesome or comical ways possible, but instead it is manipulated to heal him.

ActRaiser (1990) is a critically acclaimed SNES game which combines two major gameplay phases: a god simulator and an action platformer. You play the role of God "the Master", who awakens from his slumber only to find that the human civilization is completely wrecked, and hordes of demons are roaming free. The Master has two roles: to open new locations for humans to inhabit, and to deal with the catastrophes happening there, which usually have something to do with grotesque monsters, as represented in side-scrolling action stages, and to help develop the civilization anew by controlling it during the overhead phases through a bow-wielding cupid who also repels mischievous demons , as presented in the form of an overhead simulation.

This is an improvement of 14:11.48 over the original run of this game from 2004.

Shining Soul II is the last 'Shining' title to reach American shores, and the author's 5th 'Shining' TAS on the site. Unlike some previous games in the series, this game and its prequel play more like traditional Action-RPGs. This game, like its prequel, allows the player to pick a character type. In this run, the character chosen was a ninja, for his ability to use speed magic.

The author uses a glitch to dupe power wines and bombs, the former massively increasing his attack strength, and the latter making the run look more like Bomberman than a 'Shining' game!

This run is 17:58.75 faster than his previous Shining Soul II publication due to some very impressive manipulation to slaughter bosses in mere seconds. It is recommended that you read the authors comments for more info about the run and the game.

Dungeon Explorer is based off of Gauntlet, but adds a plot, bosses, magic spells and RPG elements. Notably, it also one-ups Gauntlet by allowing for five players.

The author races through the dungeons with all five players, making short work of bosses. The five characters were selected for their high starting agility, and include a fighter (blue), a warlock (purple), an elf (green), a bard (orange), and a thief (red).

Also, the only exit that matters is the last one used by a player, and the author uses this extensively to use the fastest character, the thief, to run when an earlier exit is available for the other characters to use.

Legend of Zelda II glitched heavily.

Most of this run features Link racing across Hyrule so fast that the screen can't keep up, inexplicably warping between places that shouldn't be connected, and collecting just three items, one spell, and one sword technique needed to beat the final palace.

Dark Link, the final boss, takes the same amount of damage no matter what level attack you have. This is especially convenient for the author because he reaches Dark Link without ever leveling, or, indeed, even killing another monster.

This is a 29-second improvement to the author's previous movie due to a different route choice and better manipulation optimization. See the author's comments for details.

In this final installment of the famous Phantasy Star saga, our protagonist, while out on a routine assignment, uncovers evidence pointing to a sinister threat to the entire solar system. One thing leads to another and he and the rest of his party eventually find themselves fighting the root of all evil. Such a quest would normally take at least ten hours, but with copious amounts of luck manipulation, it can be reduced to just under an hour and a half.

This is an improvement of 7 minutes and 15 seconds over the previously published run. A large part of this improvement is due to a new strategy involving a rollover glitch which boosts Chaz's strength. This glitch requires Chaz to have a low level, so Janus gets Chaz killed in many battles to avoid leveling him up.

As a bonus, FreshFeeling has provided an audio commentary which explains many of the strategies and provides some interesting trivia.

The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle is a frustrating action puzzler. In it, you take control of Bugs as he collects carrots while avoiding enemies such as Sylvester the Cat, Daffy Duck, Yosemite Sam, and Wile E. Coyote. Equipped with nothing but an occasional boxing glove which he can throw and some invincibility potions, Bugs must eat his way through 60 levels without getting trapped by a mob of Looney Tunes.

In this run, the author, Brandon, exploits the game's AI, which is everything but intelligent. Only one of these enemies follow actual movement, while the others will track your input, even if the input changes nothing. As such, the author is able to often render the enemies useless, allowing him to take the most optimal path. When he can't do this, he tries to find the best possible workaround, often pausing for the exact right amount of time to make it past a baddie. As a secondary goal, the author also attempts to maximize the score without losing time. For more details, as always, please see the author's notes, and also make sure to watch the captions provided in the encodes.

This author has also created a run of this game's "Special Levels".

This run has two YouTube steams. The first contains no input display while the second one does. This was included as the luck manipulation is heavily based on input, and it's hard to follow the run otherwise.

- Genre: Puzzle

Seiken Densetsu 3 is a RPG about your typical ragtag group of young adventurers that totally lack any survival instinct; at least that'd explain why they never bother to get any protective gear. Our three chosen champions of goodness are tasked with rescuing the eight elemental spirits from the clutches of evil and using their power to save the world. Though it turns out that nobody is able to count as we find in fact nine spirits...

The provided MP4s feature subtitles, allowing those of us who don't speak Japanese to figure out what's going on. We also recommend reading the author's notes; they contain a lot of very good information.

Spider-Man/X-Men: Arcade's Revenge is an action platformer starring the iconic Marvel characters Spider-Man, Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, and Gambit. After the X-Men get kidnapped by Arcade, Spider-Man must deactivate bombs, infiltrate the abandoned building where they were taken, and confront Arcade. From there, Arcade puts each hero to the test as they navigate through his bizarre "Murderworld" until Spider-Man can finally confront the madman head-on.

This infamous game was made by LJN, and although it might be better than many others from that label, it still has serious gameplay flaws that make it frustrating, let alone incredibly difficult. However, it works great for a TAS. Using careful precision and many exploits, the team of jaysmad and Brandon make it through this "Juggernaut" in less than 24 minutes. Please see the authors' notes for a detailed breakdown of the levels, a couple of glitches that were unused in the run, and a video of a camera hack for the Black Queen fight that mostly happened off-screen.

Please also check out the run for Wolverine, which is a NES game, also made by LJN, where most of Wolverine's gameplay came from.
