N64 Wishlist
Aim of this page
- Create a comprehensive list of all N64 ROMs for users to sort through.
- Of this list, determine which ones already have TASes, which ones are being worked on, and which ones are untested or available.
- Test every ROM for gameplay or graphical errors, to see how well Mupen64 emulates the game. If it's not emulated well, it is unsuitable.
- Create test run .M64s of all ROMs, to show the potentiality of if it would make a good TAS and to hopefully have newcomers watch the test runs and become inspired.
- Make a chart recording all information of ROMs, from if the TAS is done, to which is the best plugins to use[1], if the game could desynch or not, and the estimated entertainment and technical quality of the game.
- Give a brief synopsis of the game, including genre and gameplay styles, and any other information that would help anyone unfamiliar with the game to get a basic understanding of what type of game it is.
- Give links to FAQs or sites that can provide more detailed information specific to the game, such as strategies, maps, walkthroughs, etc.
Introduction
As anyone who starts TASing N64 games will discover, it is a much more difficult situation than the other systems. For one thing, the only N64 rerecording emulator, Mupen64, is not the most stable emulator in existence[2]; many games simply do not run at all or have minor or major graphical errors that either dampen or hinder the gaming experience.
Secondly, N64 developers got more ambitious and created the Expansion Pak, an add on to the N64 hardware that added more memory to the system that enabled it to play N64 cartridges that were bigger, for example Zelda: Majora's Mask, and Donkey Kong 64. This made the system capable of playing bigger games, and handling more onscreen sprites in certain sections of the game; unfortunately for TASers, it makes these games desynch frequently. Not all Exp Pak games desynch (although most do) and some non Exp Pak games do desynch, but in general Exp Pak means that there will be problems in recording, and this causes serious problems for TASers.
And thirdly, some games run perfectly fine, but due to 3 dimensions and other complicated TAS challenges, they do not get completed.
These technical frustrations, and the unknown TAS suitability of many N64 ROMs makes N64 TASing seem very daunting, and something that would rather be left alone.
However, it is the hope that if research was done for all N64 ROMs, on whether it can be run or not, if someone is already doing it, or if it is suitable for TASing, that it will be easier for newcomers to pick a game to run.
It is of note that Mupen64 is a very testy emulator. TASing is still in the early stages at the moment, and it won't truly become mainstream until a superior emulator is given rerecording functions or Mupen64 is improved[2]. But until then, there are still working games that are out there just waiting to be discovered.
How You Can Contribute
In no way is such a huge project going to be a solo performance. Any and all help in gathering the information is greatly appreciated.
You can either directly edit something that needs adding in to make corrections or fix errors(if you are an editor), PM me at Comicalflop with any detailed info about a certain ROM, or a test run .m64 that you have made, or you can post in the N64 Wishlist thread. All the information that was compiled Here (link dead) with screenshots, list of runners, and links to WIPs/test runs, will hopefully become incorporated here.
TODO: Set up charts, create links for games that are already being worked on or have information, and begin testing ROMs.
Updates
There are two new interesting updates for N64 TASing.
[1]Glide64 'Napalm' plugin was released. This plugin accurately renders more games than any other plugin to date; it's compatibility list has to be seen to be believed. Anyone thinking of starting a N64 TAS presently should start by seeing if their game of choice runs well with napalm; chances are, it does.
[2]Mupen 64 Plus Emulator is in development, the idea being that a rerecording version will eventually replace mupen 64 rerecording v8. More stable, more user friendly GUI, run all games that mupen doesn't; what more could you ask?
