Invasion of the Zombie Monsters in 4:53 by nitrogenesis
So I took a little break from Super Putty and threw this TAS together. It is a fun game, both for TASing and for playing. Boss fights aren't so fun because they require luck manipulation, which is done fastest by shooting. So please try not to mind the missed shots.

Please take note that rerecord count is not right.
  • Emulator used: openMSX 0.8.0.dev-11840
  • BIOS used: Panasonic FS-A1WSX
  • Takes no Damage
  • Aims for in-game time instead of realtime

Important Things

  • After you land, you cannot jump for another 7 frames
  • One hit kills you in this game
  • Enemies can spawn even offscreen, so bullets will still come even if the enemy itself isn't onscreen
  • Most bosses have a certain hit-point (the mouth, the eyes, etc.)
  • Jump height is invariable

Level Comments

Dark Zombie Woods

This is the first level. Straightforward enough. I guess it explains itself. The boss is like the only one that doesn't look too bad.
Oh yeah, and right now I would like to say that I compared against a run by FiXato.
It can be found here. It is much slower than mine.
His level 1 time was 69.
Mine was 71.

Cursed Zombie Dead Village

Another straightforward level. The boss was done as fast as I could make it.
FiXato's time: 72
My time: 73

Way to High Skull

Pretty simple level. I tied with FiXato in seconds here because's there no boss.

Zombies from Outer Space

Easy level. More easy bossfights. Moving on!
FiXato's time: 72
My time: 74

Way to High Skull Again

Lastest level! For some reason this is a pretty easy one too. Last boss was so easy - I manipulated him to stay up for longer and got a pretty fast time.
FiXato's time: 65
My time: 68
And that's my TAS. Enjoy it! Encodes coming soon. Don't forget to ask questions.
:)

DarkKobold: Braaaaaiiiinnsss.... Clllaaaaiiiimmmmeeeeddd....

DarkKobold: This was enjoyable, and good viewer response. Accepting.

Brandon: Publication underway.

I admit that I don't know anything about the game or MSX in general, which may make my opinion invalid, but this just looks like an above-average speedrun on console. I'm hesitant to say it's unoptimized, considering it might be console or game limitations, but it doesn't look like anything of completely optimized quality. Meh vote. Bad game choice, in my opinion.

I understand your opinion. Luck manip does make the run look bleh in some spots. But this is a really hard game.

There is at least one point where I think, "Wow, if only he had jumped right when he landed, he wouldn't have hit the side of that platform, stopping his horizontal motion." I'm in a similar boat to Samsara, but I have faith that NitroGenesis wouldn't be that bad and it's probably a game limitation. Assuming that, the run is entertaining and definitely much better than the compared run. I'm clicking "Yes".

Not too bad! The game is pretty short and amusing. I'm still groaning like a zombie at the "High Skull" pun. The ending is also quite funny. The game seems pretty clunky, though. In some spots in Stage 2, it looks like you jump out too far from the optimal path (I think it's a spot where the platform is to your left, and you go fairly far left before jumping to the right again). The boss fighting looks a little suspicious too... you don't fire very much at the Stage 1 boss compared to the others. In Stages 2 and 5, do the bosses take damage even when their mouth is closed? I'd be interested in answers to these questions before voting, but I'll probably vote Yes.

I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. I notice some parts in the first couple levels especially where you appear to hesitate for a few frames. I'm not sure if that's by design to avoid taking time wasting damage or something. At any rate it's extremely minor so I'm voting yes either way.

To mklip: I can't reach those plataforms with a regulur jump so I have to go on that platform and then do another jump to reach the. To GeoCorn: One hit kills you in this game, so I had to duck to avoid shots from an enenmie.

NitroGenesis: Thanks! I voted yes. Sirstarmagic: The length of the movie is not a good enough reason on its own to vote. For instance, if Minesweeper took 4 minutes to beat, that would be very slow tool-assisted play. (The published movie for Minesweeper here takes fewer than 30 seconds.) Now, if you mean "I voted yes because 4 minutes and 53 seconds is very fast for this game", then that's better.

Knowing that, I think that this movie deserves publication. I recommend you including important information like that in the submission text of your movies.

I have played the game on the day it was released, anyone who thinks they can do a better job prove Nitrogeneis wrong. This game would normally be close to impossible to finish under 5 minutes. The 'sprite in this game is a software sprite which makes it extremely limited in the interaction and you always will struggle with limitations. The platform this was made on in from 1983 and these game was only 'recently' released and is a jewel of technical achievements if you know the MSX1 platform. I vote YES

As much as I trust Nitrogenesis's skills, when watching it I just felt like it looked too much like a speedrun. I understand that this is because of luck manipulation and restrictions in the gameplay itself, but when watching it, I just didn't get the feeling that it was a TAS. Missed shots and clunky jumps/movements are still missed shots and clunky jumps/movements even if provided for a good, unavoidable reason. For this run, I feel "Meh." I'm sure you did the best you could, and that this is the result of just a bad game choice for a TAS.

I understand Twisted Eye. My next TAS (which will make a laranja happy) won't look like this. My run is doing well, thank guys, even the people who voted meh.
