After the cancellation of my warpless run: #3416: TheKDX7's GBC Super Mario Bros. Deluxe "warpless" in 18:15.42 I decided to make the challenge mode of this game. The purpose is of got back: 5 red coins which are sometimes hidden in blocks or in corners, 1 yoshi's egg which hides in invisible blocks and to reach the score which is before asked of entered the level or after the level.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: vba-v24m-svn422
  • collect 160 red coins, 32 eggs and reach the required score in 32 levels
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Second quest/Post game-completion
  • Starts from a saved state or SRAM
  • Genre: Platform

Mukki: Judging...
Mukki: I think that this category has potential and I can imagine a good TAS of this being accepted. Unfortunately, this particular submission has attracted some criticism as to its level of optimisation. The audience has pointed out many spots throughout the run that could be improved. I decided to investigate this myself and casually TASed level 1-1. Without any real effort I was able to improve it by ~40 frames which is a huge amount for 30 seconds of a game like SMB. This is purely from optimisation of the same route. Even if the route remained the same I imagine that this could be improved a good deal more. The .vbm is below, if you decide to redo this submission I suggest that you compare with this (I overwrote your submission which is why the rerecord count is so high). You should also study the optimisation tricks used in the NES run (such as use of left/right) as I found them to be somewhat applicable here.
I am rejecting this run on the grounds of poor optimisation.

Starts from savestate? Yes, I realize challenge mode needs to be unlocked. * Is there some reason why starting from SRAM is not possible? * Where did you get that starting savestate from? - Start from SRAM requires verification movie - Start from Savestate also along with verification movie requires justification why start from SRAM is not possible.

Details? * VBA version used does not support start from SRAM? * Challenge mode unlock does not save in SRAM? And regardless, you need that verification movie...

Well, he did submit a warpless video just prior to this, though it was cancelled due to being too similar to the NES version. There's a good chance you could work from it.

It's very entertaining, but it contains some mistakes. Some fireworks are activated without score necessity (example: 4-3). I'll drop here a weak yes.
My first language is not English, so please excuse myself if I write something wrong. I'll do my best do write as cleary as I can, so cope with me here =) (ノಥ益ಥ)ノ

While there were a couple of moments that had me wondering if things could have been done faster, there were an equal number of very entertaining moments as well. A couple of things I have questions on: - You grab the flagpole in different places sometimes when going for 5,000. Wouldn't it be faster to grab the flagpole at the lowest part of the '5,000' area? - In 6-2 you do some combo on the steps and get 2,000 on the flagpole with some fireworks. It's not faster to just get 5,000?

- No he change nothing - In 6-2 if I would not have made the combo and if I would have gone to touch the flag in 5000pts I would have had enough points, I tested him.

I really liked this run! I completely forgot about the score component for the challenge mode. I'm impressed that it's possible to get everything on the first try, without having to go back and re-do levels just for the score. Cheesing enemies for points wherever possible was a neat touch, and I especially liked 6-2. Has anybody ever hacked this mode into the NES version? This isn't the simplest thing to search for, as everybody likes to call their hacks "deluxe".

In the first level, I saw 2 optimization errors. You waited between jumps on the multi-coin block and you jumped a couple pixels too high on the flag. I didn't watch past that.

I see this is the same version as in the planning thread and I still have the same concerns. The movie is good as a draft but I find this too poorly planned to be accepted as a submission, already in world 2-1 you surpass the required score with 4050 points...

The underlined segment yeilds 4200 points, wouldn't the time saved from NOT doing that give you those missing 150 (4200-4050) points in the timer->score conversion? I am not voting yet.

Not watched it all, but did you also get the high score award? The Toad one IIRC?

This doesn't seem to be 100% optimised, I am sure there is room for some improvement here and there (some flaws are obvious, and some have already been pointed out). However I liked it, even in its current state, so I gave it a yes vote.

This one is a good solid "meh" for me. There are a fair number of pretty clear mistakes and room for improvement, but the run is mostly entertaining and is a new approach to a classic game. I like that the hitboxes work correctly on this version too. Anyway, it's not a no, and in some ways I'd like to see it posted and then later beaten in impressive fashion.

Though I understand the run is a bit subpar and has room for improvement, I still feel it's interesting enough to warrant a "yes" vote. At the very least, it's a good platform for later optimizations and improvements.
First a movie gets submitted, and ends up accepted despite breaking rules other runs have been rejected for. And when I vote less than spectacularly on this movie, I become the victim of harassment and threats. Yay, favoritism.

Since when does TASvideos so readily accept new movies with obvious errors? Considering the ridiculously high optimization of a lot of current movies, this is more a problem than ever, especially in a classic platformer conversion where we know so much about the mechanics and programming. Beyond that, it was "mildly entertaining" at best. I would probably give a weak yes to an improved version, but my present vote is "no".

No, I was kind of hoping for this too. Considering how much score was left to attain at the end of the movie though, I can't imagine it would be an easy task deciding when to go out of your way to get all the extra points.

OK OK OK you can say to me the errors that I committed so that I can correct them in the new version of the TAS
