Because I'm busy with a really long frickin movie, I figured I'd get this ball rolling and someone can pick it up. Primary time saving trick will probably be the "forwards turnaround jump" which is done by ->, <-, -> + jump on successive frames, iirc. You can throw away and pick up the hammer without losing any time, I've abused this to quickly beat level 1-3, and also bring the hammer to the top with the key. Note: I was able to do this with frame advance, but on playback it screwed up so I don't know if it's actually possible, but: On 0-2 you can flip up to the elevator going down and from there flip up to the top level. Which saves around a time unit.

You can do the first 4 *much* faster.

Here's something I threw together to give a feel of the best way I know to go through the 0th level. http://www.nerdparadise.com/crap/DonkeyKong-Omni.vbm You'll need to use v1.0, as v1.1 has different timing and you jump slightly lower, iirc.

0-1: 98 0-2: 97 0-3: 96 0-4: 95 1-1: 143 1-2: 141 1-3: 145 (Use the hammer to cancel your vertical momentum) 1-4: 131 (I can't figure out how you beat me by 10 frames though, probably something to do with the ladders that I don't know about yet.) http://www.nerdparadise.com/crap/DonkeyKong-Omni.vbm

world 1-3 can be done 1 timeunit faster http://www.geocities.com/skolehater159/DONKEYKG.zip The video is from the start, not that current lvl.

I didn't encounter any objects. And b) would be faster, but I was never able to pull it off.

Hmm... I wasn't aware you could pick up the key while moving up. EDIT: 1-1: 145 1-2: 143 Still working on 1-3

This is one of my favorite GB games, so I'm looking forward to seeing a full run of this! One thing I'd like to note: The handstand jump will increase your speed a little, and help you through levels that require a lot of horizantal movement like 1-4.

Yeah, when I tried this level, the mouse would help me over just in time to jump into the fireball. ^^;

If anyone knows how to manipulate the falling objects in 1-4 (or any sort of luck in the game), let me know, because I'm having a bastard of a time getting the pattern to change. I even redid 1-3 but no dice, nothing changed. 1-3: 146 I'll see if I can't pull off at least a 134 on 1-4 now when I or someone else figures out how to manipulate luck... You can also wall jump around the second ladder. And I didn't know about the handstand speeding you up. Good thing it doesn't effect any other level really, (I did a short test on 1-1, not enough room)

Here's what I have so far. I'm 5 frames away from being able to make the second ladder. If anyone can find those frames, please, tell me, otherwise it's back to luck manip. (Which costs at least 8 frames in 1-3). I've tried wall jumping the nest wall over, but no dice, I couldn't make it work.

Question: Why are neither of you using the SGB functionality of the game? Would that make it play differently or something? Otherwise an SGB run of it would be preferred over a GB one.

Heh... I was kinda wondering that too. ^^; When I recorded my movie, it chose SGB mode automatically. Speaking of which, I guess I'll go ahead and post mine just for the heck of it. It's not very good and OE has me beat or tied on all the levels, but I have mine completed up to the end of Stage 2, so that could give you times to work toward, or something like that... http://omake.studio-zoe.com/SuperHappy-DK.zip

Hmm... SGB version is a bit laggy in some places, and I can't get the platform trick to work in 0-3 (but I may not be trying hard enough). Wall jump still works. There's more loading time, 5 frames difference per level and another 50 or so at the start screen. Also, there's no screams of terror from Paula. ;_; All in all it seems like the exact same game with some timing adjustments. If I can get the 0-3 trick to work I'll switch. I'm still going to do the 0s over because they're looking slow.

Besides the extra loading time, the things you mention sound like enough to make a case for staying with GB if you want to do that, although personally I'd still rather watch an SGB version for the better graphics unless it drastically changes what you're able to do, and keep in mind the Rules page currently has the following: "If the game supports SGB (there's a graphical border and the game supports palette changes), don't play it in the monochrome GB mode." (About the screams, I think VBA unfortunately forgets to emulate one of the sound channels in SGB games, which I've noticed is also used for the explosion sounds in Bomberman games. I'll look into it, but I don't think I'm likely to figure it out unless it's something really obvious in the code.)
