This movie

For those who do not know about this game

Dr. Mario is a simple puzzle game.
Dr. Mario periodically throws Megavitamins into the bottle.
Afterwards, the player can move and land them on Viruses, which spawn throughout the bottle.
By connecting a line of three or more halves of Megavitamins to a virus of the corresponding color, the Virus disappears.
Removing all viruses on the screen advances the player to the next level.
Completing level 20 is the ending.

Notes

  • There is no time difference by SPEED(MED/HI). LOW is slow because Mario's throwing action is long.
  • The Down key reacts only even frames.
  • The Left / Right key reacts in both even and odd frames.
  • If you press A, B and Left key at the same time, you will move to left two times in the case of vertical.

Layout and pill sequence

Layout and pill sequence is determined when level is selected.
It does not change after it is decided once.
This is determined by the number of frames since the start of the game.
This record resets the frame by soft reset on the way and selects the optimum placement.
(Soft reset maintains level information, but do not maintain number of frames. In this way, you can select an arrangement that can not be selected normally.)

Remove glitch

"Remove glitch" occurs when 14 viruses are removed in one chains or if you remove many viruses at once. When "Remove glitch" occurs, the behavior changes according to the direction in which the 14th virus removed.
If it removes vertically, all that one column will remove.
If it removes laterally, all removes from lower than that line.
After "Remove glitch", it sometimes freeze.
Freeze may be canceled by pressing the controller button of player 2.
Regarding the necessary buttons, the internal numerical value of the cross key and the column number
are likely to be related, but details are unknown.

Update battle

This record will be the update result of Dr.Mario done in Nico Nico. All these records were done in July!

I would like to thank the two people who participated in the update. Thank you!

ThunderAxe31: Judging.
ThunderAxe31: The author stated in the submission text that there is no time difference between MED and HI speed, and I comfirm it. If the HI speed is set before resetting the console, the RNG won't be affected, and the TAS will resync, except for the necessity to change some inputs after triggering the Remove glitch, which doesn't affect completion time and it's trivial to fix. You can see the submitted movie resynced in HI speed here.
Since this movie doesn't feature any gameplay difference between using MED or HI speed, both are acceptable in this case. The difference in the ending cutscene is not a problem, since our difficulty guidelines are specifically referring to differences in gameplay. The ending cutscene for clearing Level 20 with HI speed could be considered as "best ending", however this doesn't mean much if the actual gameplay contents are completely redaundant; this movie can still obsolete a movie that starts from Level 20 HI speed.
Apart from what said above, I have to note that the submitted movie has been already bested, so I'm rejecting this submission for not beating all known records. Better luck next time!

That was really cool! Although I have to ask: Why is it called "any%"?

In this game SPEED branches the contents of the ending. HI SPEED is "best ending", MED SPEED is "normal ending". If I set SPEED to HI in this recording, it will be delayed by 2 frames. Also, since "Speed Hi" was written in Mr.CtrlAltDestroy 's comment, so I written "any%" just in case. If there is no problem, erase "any%".

Very impressive gameplay with a Yes vote for entertainment! I have a bit of an issue with what this movie is trying to accomplish though. For those unfamiliar with the NES version of Dr. Mario, there are 9 different congratulations screens: - Level 20 LOW: Black screen, minimalist music - Level 5 MED: Flying book - Level 10 MED: Flying rooster - Level 15 MED: Flying spray can - Level 20 MED: Flying dinosaur in egg - Level 5 HI: Flying turtle - Level 10 HI: Flying pig - Level 15 HI: Flying witch - Level 20 HI: Day to night transition, UFO abducting viruses, falling stars Here's a Youtube video that shows them all. Note that with the exception of Level 20 LOW and Level 20 HI, the only differences between these congratulations screens are the flying object in the cutscene and its speed. Everything else is the same. Because of this, I feel that completing Level 20 MED is an arbitrary goal, as it's not the hardest difficulty setting (it quickly becomes impossible to place pills in the top corners at HI), and the reward is basically the same as completion of some of the earlier levels (unlike Level 20 HI's cutscene which shows the viruses disappearing from Earth). I'm not sure if this is sufficient grounds for rejection, but if published, at the very least it should not obsolete the existing movie in my opinion, and I have no idea what category it could fall into.

Huge improvement. Same strategy as the current run, but much faster setup. If you have some sort of script setup to find these setups i think it would be interesting to see a movie that starts from level 0. The RTA community wouldn't even make a category for this because they didn't consider it to be a valid completion if you don't start from 0 (which I argued with them about). I guess from SmashManiac's comment I think this would obsolete the current run since it sounds like MED was only chosen because it was 2 frames faster, not because it was easier. someone may want to verify that i guess.

I am totally for obsoleting current movie. The difficulty (HI or MED) does not matters for as long as the movie is entertaining. I myself play and finish games first and watch TASes later so I totally don't care about which ending the movie gets if there is no input difference - and in this case, its would different only by spending 2 frames for difficulty change. Considering that its more than 300% faster, this is something less important. As for the movie itself - brilliant! Totally love!

Requesting Author Commentary translation that appears on both videos. Very well done in execution, and that frame war that went down on nico. Entertaining as all hell. Yes Vote.

So... http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm33611072 Does he (いなりはちまん twitter.com/eufa_23) willing to submit, too? I really think you should add them as the co-author when you just submitted it.

I found another solution (1312f on FCEUX, 1308f on BizHawk). The same length as http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm33611072 .

Thank you for your comments. I can make a record of HI mode by delaying 2 frames.(2 frames is the time taken to select HI mode.)

Great, another reject. Why don't you ask for poco_cpp's suggest first, and deley it? He is still improving. http://www.nicovideo.jp/user/47809/video If you give him only more few hours' chance, this couldn't be happened.

It probably would have been helpful to mention this beforehand.

mtvf1, don't be so negative.

When the whole run is redone from scratch (several times), we shouldn't just update the file. It should be a new submission, whenever the framewar ends.

I apologize. I agree that in this case I should have asked and waited, since the improvement could have resulted similar to the current submission. However, I have to note that the new movie on nicovideo is more than 4 seconds faster, which is a huge improvement for a 22 seconds movie, as well as the fact that it was re-made from scratch, including the RNG setup at the beginning. Thus this submission would have been rejected anyway.
