Main Comments

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is a 2D side scrolling platform game released in 1997 for the PS1 and PC. This movie beats the previous movie by 10 seconds - 82 frames thanks to some new discoveries found in RuptureFarms, Stockyards, a small improvement in the Monsaic Lines with the second Slingshot Mudokon and some optimizations in Zulag 4.

Technical Stuff

  • Emulator Used: Bizhawk v2.3.3
  • BIOS used: SCPH7003.bin
ROMS used:
  • Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (USA).cue

Game objectives:

  • Bad Ending
  • Heavy Glitch Abuse
  • Major Skip Glitch

Here is a list of glitches that we used:

Death Delay Glitch

Often abbreviated as DDG it makes Abe invisible and can corrupt his sprite and eventually become invisible at some point allowing him to get past things that would kill him. Abe will die if he falls of a ledge or gets zapped. A video made by Sligfantry can show you how this glitch works:

Auto Turn Delay Glitch

This glitch works by standing on the edge of the ledge and pressing the down button quickly and run towards a spot where you would like to hoist down. You will need to press either 'left/down' or 'right/down' depending on which direction Abe was facing.

Stop Turn and Backwards Jump

By timing this glitch perfectly you can make Abe stop and turn. To set it up, Abe needs to be standing near a ledge (pressing up whilst tunring arround) you will be able to make Abe do a backwards jump. Notice that when you press the opposite direction to where Abe is standing at the incorrect frame, Abe will just jump up and stand. But if you time it perfectly, Abe will jump backwards and possibly jump to another screen. This will allow you to jump backwards to areas and skip Zulags. In a 100% run it will allow you to get to secret areas quicker and it skips a section of StockYards Escape after finishing the secret area. Sligfantry's video can show you how this glitch works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIo1TJUBGlo

Multiple Backwards Jump

Whilst performing a backwards jump, simply press up/jump and Abe will do a multiple backwards jump and in this run Abe will use it to skip Zulag 3 to get to Zulag 4.

Diagonal fall

This is done by combining the stop turn and the auto turn glitch. It is used as a time saver in Monsaic Lines and to save a frame in RuptureFarms.

Bird Portal Closure Glitch

This run contains a glitch which saves a few frames. You can free the Mudokon a few frames earlier than a normal rescue. Here is the before and after video on how it looks when using the glitch.

Jumping from a Roll

A new thing discovered by Himmdwag, in some parts of the game Abe will jump from a roll!

Improvements

RuptureFarms

Lately, there has been some new parts in RuptureFarms where jumping from a roll is faster. This is why the movie was replaced again as thanks to a PC any% run by Crashingsnake, he demonstrated that there were some new parts in RuptureFarms that can save time jumping from a roll.

Stockyards

There has been some very small improvements lately in the Stockyards thanks to the new discovery of jumping from a roll! Doing so in the PC version will save 0.8 seconds. There are two places in this stage which jumping from a roll is possible!

Monsaic Lines

Instead of saying "Hello" to wait to jump past the Mudokon, Abe turns around before jumping which is faster than speaking to the Mudokon.

Zulag 4

In my previous run I roll before sliding in the door. Well as we now have an accurate in-game timer for the PC version, it has been discovered that it is faster to run and slide into the door instead of doing a roll before it.

Thanks

I need to thank Himmdwag for the finding the Stockyards strat! Thanks Himmdawg - you're the man! An die Arbiet! Hopefully I'll be able to TAS the PC version of Exoddus in the future as there are some interesting glitches in it including a relocation glitch on which Abe can teleport from one place to another and in a 100% run - it can lead to skipping larger parts in the game like the trials of Mudanchee and Mudomo.

ThunderAxe31: Judging.
ThunderAxe31: File replaced with a 16 frames improvement.
ThunderAxe31: Setting to delayed, in view of a possible improvement.
ThunderAxe31: File replaced with a 8 frames improvement, and resuming.
ThunderAxe31: File replaced with a 31 frames improvement.
ThunderAxe31: Accepting as improvement over the published movie.
feos: Pub.

This confused me, so I'll explain it here: BizHawk in its current state shows the time as 13:10.75, which is reflected in the encode and the previous publications. The submission parser was recently updated to a more accurate PSX framerate (it's fixed in BizHawk dev builds as well, so it'll be in 2.5), so the time of 13:02.21 is actually accurate. The currently published run is actually 13:02.83 under the correct framerate, making this a 37 frame improvement as opposed to a 9 second improvement. The run desyncs very early on 2.4.2, but syncs fine to the end on 2.3.3. It's still Oddworld! Another long-running series of TASes, though I'm not nearly as fond of it as I am TTYD or FFCC. It's nice to see another tradition continuing, though! Everything still looks fine to me, optimized, nicely put together and all that, typical of every Oddworld submission that I've seen. Still can't give this more than a Meh on entertainment, though.

Thanks for the explaination there Samsara - I too was surprised to see a different time on my submission. On the addition to Soulstorm, I am working on a remaster of the original Abe's Exoddus called Twice Ze Flavor and I have started on a prototype with some professional Greece developers, and there's also a guy who's reverse engineering the original PC ports of Oddysee and Exoddus and those will have better audio than the original ports the tuning of the sound effects, music and the voices were different to the PSX version.

Could someone please replace the movie with this file - it's now 1 second faster than the previous movie thanks to another new strat found in the Stockyards and a few more optimizations. http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/65050365977347239

Well, it's an improvement on an existing run and the game and run are still as goofy and weird as ever. I voted yes.

OK - after doing some Stockyards individual runs on the PC version yesterday - I feel like I need to put this submission on hold as I improve the Stockyards part again. This should bring the time down to 13:00 so I would like this run to be on hold for the time being.

OK - it seems I'm having having desyncs with the bees this time after re-doing the Stockyards. So for now have this one set to judging and I will submit an update once I get the bees to sync.

If you say you're still working on an improvement, I can't judge it yet. So, don't worry, there is no deadline, so take your time until you're satisfied with the new result.

Oh boy it looks like I will have to put this run as delayed again as I have seen some improvements I can do at the first stage of the game thanks to CrashingSnake https://youtu.be/uKvSitYvBXM?t=44 I'll see if it saves time - if it does and I get the bees to sync again I will have to delay this one again. Update: I got as far as Monsaic Lines and the new RF route makes it faster so I will need to set this to delayed again. Thanks.
