The submission message follows:
Used Gens version 9c. Takes lotsa hits, dies twice. So, after months of slacking off, I finally have another run to submit. Cadash is a fairly generic side-scrolling hack-and-slash game. I gain levels and buy new weapons, but that's about it. The main improvements over my last submission are the boss fights, as well as just general better-ness, because frame advance is my friend. I use the warrior, partially because he walks faster, does more damage with his regular attack, and partially because the mage wouldn't be getting any of his decent spells at such low levels. I skip the item that prevents underwater damage, as well as most of the second dungeon and the Kraken boss. As a result I gain four levels in the following area (including the boss) because I'm so pitifully weak then. My gold total was a bit of a fluke in the final dungeon; I didn't plan for it to turn out the way it did, it just happened that way (you'll see it once you get there). Both places that I die are beneficial to me: For the first, I gain an extra-long invincibility after I die, so I don't have to take two hits going through that area. At the final boss, I die between the boss's forms so I don't waste time in the middle of the fight. Unfortunately, there aren't many glitches to be abused. I'm in "standing" mode for a few frames after walking off a ledge, and after dying (if I died in the air), so I can attack during either time. I can "double jump" if I die in the middle of my first jump, but I generally hit my head on the top of the screen, so I can't use it that much.

Looks good to me, yes vote.
Though it would have been funnier if this was the arcade version, as that has an absolutely horrendous translation. As Sharkey once reviewed, years ago. (warning, lewd and inapprorpriate language) |

Heh. I always love old games with the bad climbing animation that looks like your character is humping the rope.
Enh. The movie feels like a meh, but I think that's more the game's fault than nif's. I'll give him a "Yes" anyway. _________________ If life were an RPG, I'd be an NPC. |

| I quite liked it. The climbing animation was particularly funny but everything else looked pretty good aside from me not understanding most of what was going on. |

I thought it looked more like a Genesis version of Faxanadu. Regardless, it was a great run. Good job, nifboy. I like how it's improved so much since your first submission :P _________________

The run was good, but I didn't really feel like this was a good game to show off what you can do with an emulator. There didn't appear to be any shortcuts, bugs or even chances hit bosses at 30 Hz. I'd never think to pick this game, but you probably did as well as could be done. Nice work.
The only thing that bugged me was that you never hit the black pudding (I'd like the recipe, btw) when it was hanging on the ceiling. You hit the dragon while he was flying, so I'd think it possible. Who knows. Maybe puddings are simply more resilient than dragons. _________________ ideamagnate| .seen aqfaq

As far as the Black Pudding is concerned, if I jump to attack it I can only hit it once, and I'd spend so much time in the air (only one jump height) that I miss my chance to hit it twice as it does it's little ceiling hop.
Also, if I stood right under it and jumped straight up I'd get hit. |

I wasn't familiar with this game: either it's really neat or you made it look really neat. But one of those villages was built on top of a pile of human bones, which is just weird.
Yeah, Genesis could use more love. Where's Frenom lately? Heheh... |

There are some genesis runs sitting in the workbench for a while, some by neofix, there is highness sunset riders etc.. _________________ "(...)using tha features provided by an emulator is irrelevant, as long as tha “world” – tha gizzle – is unmodified." - Gizoogle |

I spent some time trying to find shortcuts in this game, but failed completely. I did find out that you can perform an air-jump in 2-player mode, because the dead player respawns where the other player is located, so if you die and respawn when the other player is jumping, you can respawn in the air and jump immediately. However, the screen won't scroll upwards in any of the places where this could be used for a very effective shortcut. The game designers were clever this time. I give up.
Anyway, this game might be slightly faster with 2 players, even though the mage walks slightly slower. For example, in the very beginning, when the game starts, the 2nd player is a bit farther to the left than player 1, so if player 2 takes the faster character, the door on the left can be reached faster. The player 1 would have the mage and he could die when he is not needed. There are two continues, so he could join the boss fights and then die again. The faster character needs to stop to kill some enemies anyway, so the slower one would catch up in most places. Also, when visiting the shops, the player 2 could do the shopping while player 1 waits at the door and exits immediately after the shopping is done. Some parts would be slower with 2 players, but overall it might be a bit faster. Maybe about 20 seconds could be saved with 2 players.
Otherwise, this movie seems very well planned and executed and I would be very surprised if someone could improve the route. |
