When I first watched the currently published run of jaws, I was surprised. To me it was the poorest quality run on this site in both entertainment and technical value. This was particularly emphasized when the run was bested by a console performance recently.
I thought that a good contribution to this site would be to take the poorest run and take it up a notch. And that is what I did here with my 2555 frame (42.6 sec) improvement.
Time was saved in every area of the game, particularly because the previous author seemed to not fully omptimize anything. 69 frames were saved from pressing start sooner at the title screen for instance. Enemies were killed as soon as possible and the bonus screen was improved by the use of the left & right to make the airplane travel faster.
The strategy is the same: 2 encounters + bonus scene. Get 30,000pts & 13 conk shells along the way. Power up to level 2 & get the submarine. Kills Jaws. This is the only fast strategy possible, here is why:
1) Jaws has 5120 HP and an invulnerability period between hits of 24 frames. Your normal power level 1 harpoon does 8 damage. Raising your power meter doubles your damage. So at power level 3 you will do 32 damage. To do this you need 13 conk shells. 5 to get the receiver (required before leveling up). 3 for level 1 & 5 for level 2. It is not possible to manipulate luck to do this in one "random" encounter.
2) The bombs do 2x what a harpoon will do at each level. The ship cannot be kept, as you can not avoid getting hit by jaws. The submarine allows you to continue to throw bombs without the ship. This saved mega-time compared to the time it takes to get it. Getting the submarine required 30,000 pts.
3) While I use a jaws encounter as my "2nd encounter", hitting him is pointless. He regenerates more hp between the encounter than I could inflict upon him. The first encounter with jaws serves two purposes: a) ensure that I get two encounters before powering up, b) To score extra points by shooting him. This helps me get to the 30,000 goal.
4) You must do the bonus scene after the second encounter. And the 2nd encounter is necessary to get the shells & points. Far more time would be lost trying to find jaws under-equipped than the time it takes to do these scenes.

Luck Manipulation

Luck manipulation sucks in this game, nuff said. At times something will be manipulable, at others the same thing will be NOT RANDOM AT ALL! This required me to redo large chunks of this run many times due to bad luck in the encounters & with random drops.
Encounters are weird in this game. You can SOMETIMES avoid them by pausing just before the square that you would have had it on. If you avoid it, you avoid that encounter completely and the game sets up the 2nd encounter. After 3 encounters, you get a very large span of no encounters, giving you plenty of time to go back and forth powering up. So the best strategy is to manipulate 1 of the 3 away and do the other two. Or, in my case, manipulate away 2, fight one, and run into jaws. This way is not necessarily slower or faster but "safer". As mentioned before. The way you play an encounter will help determine if the next one can be skipped.
That is about all I can think of. This game basically sucks to TAS. You have little to no control over seemingly random events. I don't doubt that it is theoretically possible to improve this run significantly, but I pity the soul who dares to try.

Summary

  • Aims for fastest time
  • Uses FCEU .16
  • Manipulates luck
  • Plays a crappy game

Truncated: Accepting as an improvement to the current movie. More explanation in the submission text would still be appreciated, since I guess you have had time to rest since 10 days ago. :)

I must say...this game is as boring as hell. I'm inclined to vote yes, though, simply because it's an improvement.

Wow. The first time I saw this game, and it was enough. It's a pity only that much could be saved, and the luck wasn't manipulated to further extent, but you've still done a good job with this abomination of a game, so I vote yes. I have a strong feeling that someone has to disassemble the game to shed some light on the randomness.

You couldn't shoot Jaws way more when you first encountered him? Or does it just not make a difference in the end?

Good work. Looks improvable (but probably isn't ... don't know this game at all). Yes vote here.

This game makes Big Rigs look like the best videogame ever. But, it's an improvement to a horrible movie, so... Yes vote, though I wouldn't be against just quietly un-publishing the old Jaws movie and rejecting this.

Haha, I actually have this game. I didn't even know that the game had an ending until I watched the first TAS. Yes vote here.

He wasn't at Level 3 at that point, which is when you actually kill Jaws and end the game; taking him out before then doesn't really matter in the long run. If I'm not mistaken (and I probably am), he just ran into him to get more shells in order to level up.

Yes, I used the jaws fight as a substitute for a regular encounter. They are identical except for the obvious inclusion of jaws. At level 1, I do very little damage do jaws and he regenerates some hp after each encounter. It is impossible for me to do enough damage to overcome that regeneration. I shoot him because that give me 20pts per hit and I need 14,600 points by the end of that encounter in order to have enough for submarine after the bonus scene.

I voted yes because it's quite an improvement. What's baffling me is that I can't see it, is this game so poorly made that I can't even see a near minute improvement? Yeesh...

yes yes YES! When I saw the published movie, it looked easily improvable (mostly extra scene). Then I tried to do this with tools, it's difficult because items are *almost* not manipulable. It's either when / where enemy shows up, and when enemy dies. And I also found that you need the following 13 shells, 30,000 points, etc.. in order to finish this game fast is also difficult, because game seem to not want to give me enough points or shell, either way. Or I'm just having bad luck :|

Was not particularly entertaining but was short enough to keep my attention. Vast improvement on an existing run. Yes vote.

The previous submission never should have been published, mainly for being such a bad game, but since this is a positive improvement the only option to vote is yes, otherwise it would have probally have been a meh.

I remember first watching someone play this on an emulator at school! (well, just before school) I was surprised at how short it was. Cute and short, that's this game.

Wonderful! I do appreciate how difficult this was to TAS in an intimate way, and I think you did a great job. I like finally seeing things done in a Jaws TAS that can't be done in live play (like your Bonus Scene.) I'm wondering if you were forced to put the minisub in the top right, was there no way to get it on the bottom right or bottom left spots?

Is the 10,000 point bonus needed for this strategy? If not, maybe getting a non-perfect would save a tiny bit of time, that could be later nullified out by goofy luck anti-manipulation!

I really have no control over it. Manipulating the sub couldn't happen without consequently manipulating the bonus pt drops I got. On the upside, that location was about 1.5 sec quicker than the one in ziplock's movie.

*stuff about not getting pts*
30,000 pts are necessary for getting the submarine. The submarine allows me to hit jaws with bombs instead of harpoons. Bombs are 2x as powerful. Therefore mucho time saved.
