Knuckles in Sonic 1 This should be worth doing a TAS of. I'm not good enough with Sonic 1 to make a TAS, but the game does play differently with Knuckles' physics and abilities, different enough that I think it's worthy of being the first "hacked" game to be given the TAS treatment.

Holy crap this is awesome! I wonder if there is also a hack that puts just the spin-dash in Sonic 1... Speaking of Sonic 1, I wonder how the run of that game was going, by Xebra, I believe. The first three levels were done and it was looking incredible. But I digress. Time to play Sonic 1 with Knuckles (and more importantly, spin dash!!!)

more importantly, wall climbing. some levels would just be climb the wall, and go over the entire level.

True, but that's really just Marble Zone, which can be slow and boring anyway. You can do it a bit in Spring Yard but not nearly as much of the level as MZ.

Here is my attempt. I really enjoyed this, and it seems Knuckles has a nice advantage over Sonic. An example is in Labyrinth Zone 3 where Knuckles is able to jump/climb ledges quickly. Unfortunately, Knuckles isn't able to jump as high as Sonic. My times are: GHZ1: 0:20 GHZ2: 0:13 GHZ3: 0:33 MZ1: 0:17 MZ2: 0:15 MZ3: 0:28 SYZ1: 0:24 SYZ2: 0:27 SYZ3: 0:59 LZ1: 0:27 LZ2: 0:29 LZ3: 1:03 SLZ1: 0:22 SLZ2: 0:18 SLZ3: 0:38 SBZ1: 0:42 SBZ2: 0:34 SBZ: 0:16 Final Zone: 1:13 EDIT: Scrap Brain and Final Zones added. Final time is 16:24.

While we're at it, I'd like to see a Sonic 2 Long Version run.

I'd rather see Sonic 1 coming into realization for the first time. *cough* Since there's been no word on it I guess noone is working on it at the moment. Which is a shame for such a classic (and fast) game. :/

Well, the hack has some flaws to it. Also, the movie would need to be optimized a bit. But I'm not aiming for this to be published, I just thought it would be fun to make :)

I presume long version means getting 100%, ie getting all the emeralds and unlocking Super Sonic.

S2 Long Version is a hack of Sonic 2 that includes Wood Zone, Dust Hill Zone, and some other zones that I've forgotten... but I wouldn't recommend doing a speedrun of it; it's not yet finished.

Ouzo: You should try to replicate Sonic's path with Knuckles on GH3, if you can do it, it seems likely you can land the 8th hit on the boss much faster than Sonic by gliding after the 7th hit.

I've redone the first three acts. What I have found is that it's faster to just wait until Robotnik lowers than gliding to him (gliding isn't affected by the speed-up box). Also, I'm not able to bounce off of enemies/boxes unless I hold jump the entire way. If I release jump and hold jump again I will glide and slow down. Thanks for the tip on the GHZ robotnik battle. My new times are: GHZ1: 0:20 (actually about 3 frames away from 0:19) GHZ2: 0:12 GHZ3: 0:31 Here is the new movie.

Something I found that might speed things up slightly - you know how, when you're gliding, and then you stop gliding and land on a piece of the level, you lose all of your horizontal velocity? Well, if you land on an object instead of a level piece (for example, moving platforms), you don't lose any speed and can continue running immediately. This is sort of nice for acrobatics in Final Zone while waiting for Eggman's attack cycle.

Knux can use the scroll glitch in GH2 without dying, no fair ><. Ouzo, did you ever try to get that to work with Sonic? I was unsuccessful but that doesn't mean it's impossible ...

If anyone's working on a run of this, they might want to put it on hold for just a bit - Stealth is working on a "rev 01" of the hack with several bugfixes and improvements (for starters, the rev 01 raster effects - parallax clouds, plus the wavy effect in LZ), and I just finished testing it on real hardware and reporting the results (for example, most of the garbage tiles on Knuckles' sprite are gone, except for three tiles on one frame). Also, the spike bug is fixed, although I can't imagine that will matter for a TAS, since you're not going to die anyway. When he's released it to the public, I'll let you know.

Knuckles can actually use the scroll glitch in many places. I've found out a few places where I can use it. I could probably use it in every single level if I found the right place, but I don't want to because that would be boring. Here is an example. I think you have to build up a great amount of speed (spindashing or jumping off a slope fast) and stop suddenly. Then doing a quick spindash will activate the scroll glitch. I think I'll just have GHZ2 use it. I did use a small variation in LZ2, but that was to do something different by showing knuckles gliding while the tally was adding up. As to whether Sonic can perfom it in GHZ2, I tryed it a few different ways, but all were unsuccessful. I don't know why knuckles can do it, but Sonic can't. EDIT: Finished version 2. Final time is 15:42. Here is the new movie. Times: GHZ1: 0:20 GHZ2: 0:12 (scroll glitch) GHZ3: 0:31 MZ1: 0:16 MZ2: 0:14 MZ3: 0:28 SYZ1: 0:22 SYZ2: 0:25 SYZ3: 0:57 LZ1: 0:26 LZ2: 0:24 (scroll glitch) LZ3: 1:00 SLZ1: 0:19 SLZ2: 0:17 SLZ3: 0:35 SBZ1: 0:25 (scroll glitch) SBZ2: 0:32 SBZ3: 0:15 Final Zone: 1:13

I love the new Ninja Gaiden style wall-climbing. I must say I'm very impressed that you pump these runs out so fast, especially being a game as complex as Sonic.

Rev 01 is out. Unfortunately, Ouzo's movie desyncs right away when using the newer revision
