One person's silly idea is another person's inspiration.
This movie is essentially constructed by taking one controller and wiring it into two SNES emulators at once. The same input is used to play both games to completion. In other words, the player plays two games simultaneously with one controller.
Note: There is a visual anomaly during the battle with Serges in X 2. This is an emulator bug relating to the Cx4 chip used in the Mega Man X 2 cartridge.
If you like this movie, be sure to check out the movie that even beats four games with one controller!

Disappointed with slow paced movies that may be good but just move too slowly?
Look no further, nitsuja in this extremely high-speed run demonstrates how to break the sound barrier and why Sonic is the fastest character in the video game universe.
The average character movement speed in this movie is probably the highest of all the movies on this site.
This movie doesn't collect any of the Chaos Emeralds, but does demonstrate almost every single move that Sonic is capable of in this game.

This is the fifth published movie of Dragon Warrior, a seemingly complex, but ultimately, fairly simple NES RPG. The character completes his quest at Level 7. There are several things about this movie that might seem odd if one is not aware of them beforehand:
  • All unnecessary random encounters have been manipulated into not happening
  • The player dies several times in order to get transported back to the beginning
  • Action commands are often intentionally not entered as soon as possible to manipulate critical hits and such
Note: The first AVI release of this movie had the wrong author name in it. The AVI was replaced a couple of hours later.

Movie of Mega Man 5 (USAのロックマン5), played by Baxter.
This is a great improvement to the previous version by Kopernical, summing to 3 minutes and 26 seconds of time saved.
The most obvious improvement comes in the superb well-planned use of the Super Arrow, which is used to dart Mega Man through the stages horizontally and vertically. But there are many other improvements too, discussed at the author's comments.
Note: The movie requires FCEU 0.98.15.

The second Dragon Warrior game beaten as fast as possible.

Dragon Warrior is an epic RPG series which now spans 8 games across many systems.
The second game greatly expands on the first to include a party of three heroes
(all descendents of Erdrick and the hero of DW1) and battles that may include many enemies.

The world is much bigger and there are many big dungeons to explore as well.
Luckily there are new abilities and items to make this easier.
Enemies can randomly drop items when defeated and there is a lottery which
is the precursor to the casinos which appear in each later DW game.
Finally, you might notice that many of the enemies in this game appear
in later games, particularly DW8.

Super fast bouncing around. Completed without collecting any emeralds, with Sonic and Tails (both controlled by the player).
If you like Genesis Sonic games but dislike level wrapping glitches, this is the TAS that you are looking for.
This movie has an Atlas Map encode of the Wing Fortress zone, which shows the standard encode overlaid on a zoomed out map.

In this run, adelikat picks up maximum speed upgrades and has fun with perfect reflexes, much like the previous movie. That is certainly something nice to do, because the game scrolls automatically and the player cannot affect the speed. However, the point of this movie is not just to beat this game as fast as possible, but rather to do all kinds of unpredictable and awe-inspiring things rarely seen in any TAS — without losing time. See for yourself.
This is probably one of the best illustrations on how to create art out of a simplistic and otherwise uninteresting game to watch.
What is also different about this movie is an extra warp which significantly shortens the game, and the use of a new tool (input macro) as described in the submission text. Bots are occasionally used to generate pseudorandom input while still avoiding death.
Also be sure to check out this movie being played back on an actual NES.

Super Mario World is a game which needs no introduction.
This movie beats the previous SMW movie by a mere 3 seconds. Strategically, this is very similar to the previous movie, but a new technique which involves keeping flight status through doors and pipes saved the majority of the time. This game is now extremely tightly optimized to minimize lag between levels.
This movie is a joint venture between Fabian and JXQ, but small and big optimizations were contributed by several people: skamastaG, thegreginator, mrz, jimsfriend, Flagitious and Arne_the_great.

King's Bounty is a turn-based strategy game. The objective is to recover the Sceptre of Order. Map pieces that reveal the location of the sceptre are gained by defeating villains and finding special artifacts.
A normal play session would involve exploring four large continents and battling hundreds of creatures, but in this movie nobody gets killed and everyone is happy.
The input length is 10 seconds long, only 25 frames of which is actual gameplay!

Mega Man 2 is a game that hardly needs any introduction. This movie plays Rockman 2, the Japanese version, which is essentially Mega Man 2 in difficult mode.
This new movie, played by Shinryuu, is about 8 seconds faster than the previous movie by Shinryuu and Bisqwit. The major timesaver in this movie is:
  • a zip+death shortcut in CrashClashman and Woodman stages
Other new tricks were also used.
Most of the techniques in this movie have been architected by Finalfighter and Morimoto.

Unlike the other versions of this game, this version of X2: Wolverine's Revenge is a side-scrolling platformer.
Wolverine mostly uses his most powerful weapon, the adamantium claws, to strike enemies. With the claws unsheathed, he can enter an even more devastating "Rage Mode" when the player repeatedly taps a button. The game also features stealth segments in which Wolverine can sneak up on enemies and use a special stealth attack to silently and instantly take them out.
In this run, nitsuja slashes and dashes around the Weapon X Facility and manages to rid Wolverine's body of the Shiva Virus in just 14 minutes.

NINJA外伝2 — The Dark Sword of Chaos, now completed about 4 seconds faster than the previous version by the same author, due to lots of small optimizations throughout every level.
The shadow clones are a unique gameplay element not seen elsewhere in the series, but in this movie they are used mainly to make extremely short work of bosses and entertain the viewer immediately afterwards.
The game has a rich plot with lots of cutscenes. Because of this, the author has also supplied the "story" version of the movie, which exhibits the same gameplay but includes all the cutscenes skipped by pressing start (which sum up to about 3/4 of the entire movie). It can be obtained here.
A good sense of humor is strongly advised to note the irony present in some of the later dialogues between characters.

Metroid completed as fast as possible without holding back, and without concern for game sanity.
Uses a game restart sequence (up+a on the second controller) to save time in backtracking.
Much of this 34-second improvement comes from taking an unexpected route through Kraid's lair: the doors are tricked into teleporting Samus to different rooms with the help of the door glitch. Another substantial improvement came from using a new strategy in the statue room.
See Metroid Tricks for more information about the door glitch as well as other tips and tricks.

Vectorman (1995) is one of the later games for Genesis; it sports multiple gameplay modes, pre-rendered 3D models and some very nice visual effects.
According to its plot, the Earth's population decided they have polluted it enough, and migrated elsewhere, leaving robots made of orbs ("orbots") behind to clean up the mess. One of the higher level orbots gets his head accidentally attached to a nuclear warhead, goes insane and usurps total control over all mechanical beings left on the planet. This is the state the main hero, orbot Vectorman, finds it in after returning from one of his garbage discharging missions.
There have been multiple attempts at TASing this game, yet this is the first one to get published.

Super Mario Kart is the first in a popular series of games starring the Mario cast racing go karts. This run aims to get record times in all tracks at 150cc difficulty. This is achieved mostly by jumping straight into walls, bottomless pits, and lava, among many other things. Mushrooms are also used frequently due to their mysteriously friction-free propulsion powers.
A slightly modified snes9x is required to play the SMV movie. The end-game ceremonies for all but the last cup are skipped by resetting the game. This feature is not available in the default snes9x packages.

Unable to fly, Mario is forced to confront most obstacles and overcome them in unique ways. Riding Yoshi is also banned. 86 out of the total 96 exits are completed.

Gunstar Heroes (1993) is widely considered to be one of the best action games on the Sega Genesis, but, ironically, was commercially unsuccessful due to poor promotion. It features a variety of melee attacks, as well as 4 basic weapons which can be combined in pairs (making a total of 14 combinations) — all densely packed in a swift and explosion-heavy gameplay spanning over seven uniquely designed stages. The author takes special care to showcase all the moves the game is capable of, using every possible attack and having lots of fun playing around in autoscrolling sections.
This movie is 3 minutes longer than the previous one due to playing on hardest difficulty and using both Gunstars at the same time. See the author's comments for more details.
The encodes for this movie are also slightly larger than usual — this is due to an amount of colors and on-screen motion even the best codecs have problems coping with.

arkiandruski has provided an audio commentary for this movie, available here. He watches his run's encode and speaks along, play back your own copy as you listen to him.

Darkwing Duck (1992) is a platformer somewhat similar to Mega Man in gameplay and difficulty. The arrow gun allows the player to climb up walls and use creative shortcuts so that the absolute shortest route can be taken. In case you are wondering why the character keeps on jumping so much, it is because he has to wait a short amount of time before being able to walk. With constant jumping these stops can be avoided.
This movie is a joint venture between AnS and Randil to improve the previous run by Walker_Boh, resulting in 35.7 seconds saved through means of extensive optimization, luck manipulation and lag removal. We recommend reading the authors' comments for more details.

This game has a lot of bosses, to say the least. Because the author speeds through levels so quickly, the amount of time spent fighting bosses is actually greater than the amount of time completing the level in order to reach them.
This is a 7 minute 38 second improvement over the previous movie. Much of this improvement is simply due to defeating bosses more quickly. The author has left detailed comments about these improvements.

The first quest completion time of this fast paced game got nearly cut in half thanks to Juste's ability to sink into walls when going at very high speed. Please, don't try this at home!
This is a 56 second improvement over the author's previous movie.
However, if you still think there is not enough zipping through walls, make sure to see the second quest completed in less than half a minute!
Selected quotes from JXQ:
Come follow on the adventure through a castle that contains no less than eighty clashing colors in each room! Be amazed as Juste Belmont, Simon's grandson, has to do the usual vampire hunting despite looking nothing like his grandfather (or a man at all). Question his motives when he takes time out of his rescue mission to decorate the basement he will soon destroy! Feel the pain as Juste struggles to understand that there actually are two castles!! At first there were 70 stars because Bowser demanded it. Then there were 16 stars because MIPS the rabbit demanded it. Then there was 1 star because Bowser's Sub demanded it. Now there are none because the viewers are impatient and demanded the game be quicker.
As with many other runs on this site, the goal of pure speed has resulted in the complete breaking of the game. Very little of the game's normal play remains. If you'd like to see more of what Super Mario 64 offers, see the 120 stars run.
Super Mario 64 has a history of publications on this site. If you wish to see how it unfolded since the beginning, see the page SM64TASHistory. Also, if you have a hankering to see MIPs the rabbit, the 16 stars route has been improved.

Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers 2 is quite an improvement over the original Chip 'n Dale in terms of graphics and a whole lot of other things. Thankfully, the original game's solid controls haven't been changed. The plot of this game is that Fat Cat has stolen the Pharaoh's Urn and wants to use its power (for evil purposes, of course).
Like the first movie, a two-player run makes for some interesting things, like Chip and Dale carrying each other around, and heavy abuse of death to take advantage of balloons. By killing off one character, he respawns on a floating balloon, thus going ahead of the other character. Unlike the first, however, this run frequently destroys bosses by using one of the characters as a weapon. Only in the Chip 'n Dale series can such apparently irrational action be justified.
This movie, the second submission for this game by dragonxyk, is a 18.55-second improvement over the previous movie. See here for a run with just Chip.
