Rating: 8.0 (17 votes)

- Heavy glitch abuse
- Genre: Platform
This game is Super Mario Bros, the original, but on Famicom Disk System. It is much similar to the ROM version of the game, except for one minor difference that is demonstrated here.

The −1 stage is completely different. In the NES and Unisystem versions, the −1 stage repeats infinitely and cannot be completed, but in FDS, it can be completed, and then come −2 and −3.

The −3 stage in FDS is a castle level, and completing it ends the game, even though it says "princess is in another castle". The princess is not seen in the ending, but she is sighted twice in the −1 stage, as shown in this movie.

This movie is 84 frames faster than the previous one due to the use of a "cheap trick".

Mario has eaten too many poisonous mushrooms and as a result, decided to go on a furious killing spree. In this berserker state he has also gained the new secret ability to walk through walls at will.

Wondering how some tricks work? Information is available at Super Mario Bros tricks page.

This movie is faster than the previous version due to various optimizations, including riding a vine in a very painful position.

This is the real Super Mario Bros 2. It was never officially released in the USA and Europe. It was later ported to SNES, and released as "Lost Levels" on Super Mario All-stars. Phil remembers there were pirate copies of this game under the name Super Mario Bros. 3.

FDS means Famicom Disk System. It was a Japanese disk-unit version of the NES.

This is a TAS of the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2, a.k.a. 'The Lost Levels', using a suboptimal punk called 'Luigi'. He jumps higher than Mario, but acts slower in many ways. However, the movie is in no way worse than the Mario version - some new creative solutions have been found.

This is an 85 frame improvement over the previous movie by Deign.

Super Mario Ball (better known as Mario Pinball Land in the US) is an adventure quest combined with pinball type game similar to Pinball Quest.

In the game you need to flip Mario like a pinball to obtain stars, keys, defeat enemies, and advance levels.

Of course the author completes these objectives with speed and precision and often while juggling multiple balls.

Obsoletes movie #330 (12:14.92)
Rating: 7.6 (15 votes)
- Aims for maximum score
- Takes damage to save time
- Genre: Platform
Aside from Tetris, Super Mario Land is probably the most well-known cartridge for the original Gameboy. It features a marked departure from traditional Mario enemies and themes, including Sphinxes, seahorses, fists emerging from pipes, Egyptian-themed levels, Chinese-themed levels and UFO-themed levels.

The movie this obsoletes was the first published Gameboy movie on this site. Remarkably, 4 years later, this improves it by only 74 frames, which is less than 2 seconds. Interestingly, this movie racks up exactly the same number of points as the original, the author making up for some new routes that didn't give as many as the previous.

This is the second and last true Mario game for the original Gameboy. It has unique power ups like carrots and bubbles and allows the player to go through each of the worlds in any order. It also features the first appearance of Wario, who would become a staple character for Nintendo.

This run works on both the Japanese and USA/Europe versions.

This is a 1 minute 14 second improvement over the author's previous attempt. Details on improvements can be found in the author's submission text.

At first there were 70 stars because Bowser demanded it. Then there were 16 stars because MIPS the rabbit demanded it. Then there was 1 star because Bowser's Sub demanded it. Now there are none because the viewers are impatient and demanded the game be quicker.

As with many other runs on this site, the goal of pure speed has resulted in the complete breaking of the game. Very little of the game's normal play remains. If you'd like to see more of what Super Mario 64 offers, see the 120 star run.

This movie is approximately a 5 second improvement to the previous movie due to a series of improvements discovered by the authors, detailed in the submission message.

Alternatively, you can view a more optimised version of the previous type of any% TAS, the 16-stars run, here, played by Swordless Link. The run is 41 seconds faster than the last published 16-star movie.

The Lost Levels is the remake of the game released in Japan as Super Mario Bros 2; it is an exercise in Fake Difficulty, containing very difficult jumps, many enemies, problematic terrain, poisonous mushrooms, and, at worst, koopa jumps over walls or across pits. Most of it is senseless rehashing of elements in places where they don't belong (like amateur hacks). It's so difficult to beat that Nintendo of America released a wholly different game given a Mario theme as Super Mario Bros 2.

Of all the games in Super Mario All-Stars, it's the only one in the set that saves your progress at individual levels rather than the start of worlds. It's that bad.

This movie, about 7 seconds faster than the previous, plays all levels, including the secret world 9, and extremely difficult A through D worlds.

- Genre: Racing
Super Mario Kart is the first in a popular series of games starring the Mario cast racing go-karts. This run aims to get record times in all tracks at 150cc difficulty. This is achieved mostly by jumping straight into walls, bottomless pits, and lava, among many other things. Mushrooms are also used frequently due to their mysteriously friction-free propulsion powers. A high amount of wall-bouncing is required.

This run is over a minute and a half faster than the previous published run, due to new exploits of the definition of a lap.

Super Mario World 2 - Yoshi's Island is a vibrant, colorful and fun game that stars the popular Yoshi.

We recommend reading the author's comments, because there's a lot more to this movie than meets the eye, even though the movie is very colourful, actionpacked and full with entertaining tricks and maneuvers.
In other words, the very essence we tool-assisted speedrun movie makers enjoy. :)

Technically, the game is very exceptional on SNES due to its use of the SuperFX chip. The chip allows for many cool special effects that are otherwise impossible on SNES.

If you liked this but want even more Yoshi craziness, be sure to check out the warped completion.

This is an (updated) quick completion of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

The author abuses a glitch that lets him warp to any stage up to 6-8.

This is an improvement of 205 frames over the previous movie. Most of the improvement comes from breaking Yoshi's movement speed limit, as well as improved Bowser fights.

There is also a run without the warp glitch.

Please read the Why and How page if you haven't already done so. It explains the rules and methods that apply to all of these movies, particularly the use of savestates and frame advance. Also refer to our Glossary to understand terms we use, such as TAS or other unfamiliar terms.
