Your level 4 is quite different, although the general idea is still very similar. Everything else is either the same or has irrelevant differences. http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/24910295966477651 Might be relevant in terms of level 5 if we are getting different “RNGs”. I think I’ll work on that tomorrow.

@Zeupar: There’s a difference between frame optimization, and strategy. All 3 of my SM64DS published TASes use massively different strategies that weren’t found at the time the previous one was made.

It’s known to have a lot of issues and be hard to TAS with. Basically you can start a movie with clean SRAM and next time you play it through it’ll have dirty SRAM and lag won’t sync or some shit.

Could you post an input file please? I figured out your ending trick: pause and unpause right before a level finishes.
Good job. I was trying to come up with a mathematical solution to Pacman puzzles so I could prove my 6-empty-steps solution was perfect, but I suck at maths. Was also still trying to just randomly improve the solution, no luck there. I’ll upload the file, but you should be able to replicate it yourself very easily now. http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/24906776038841344 Edit: Found a 7 empty steps solution to level 3 (old was 9). Should save roughly 19 frames again. Edit: 19 saved in-level, 1 with the pause trick; 20 total. 43 frames ahead of the old file. Level 4 starts at 2168, old was 2211. Edit: Submission is dead but I’ll keep perfecting it. Level 5 in 9 empty squares (4 left side 5 everything else), old was 14 squares. That should be 41 frames improved at the least. /// Improved 48 by strategy, 1 by pause trick; 49 total. 92 frames ahead of the old file. Level 5 starts at 3073, old was 3165. Really weird, I’m getting different enemy behaviour with the same strategy on 2 different saves in level 4. I’m getting the less spectacular dodge in the TAS… /// The blue and orange guy have 1 place each where they can go either left and right or up and left, respectively. Weird… /// Tried changing the “RNG” with different inputs on level 3, but level 4 stayed the same. Kinda sad I miss out on a nice dodge…

No. While it might be true that you are able to prove that you TAS intelligently, you are not going to prove that everyone else on this website is not TASing intelligently!
There are tons of suboptimal TASes published on the site… that is what I mean by “not TASing intelligently”. You could change “intelligently” for “properly” or whatever other word you feel like. It’s an irrefutable fact that many published TASes could easily be optimized more.

Don't you think that collaboration is intelligent TASing?
Sure. What do you think happened in the only TAS I was able to finish and get published on this site? I’m also collaborating with Suuuper on a Mario Kart DS all missions TAS, and I have a partner backing me up on Advance Wars: Dual Strike as well (STL). This answer also goes towards xy2_. What I meant by “collaboration takes motivation” is that I can’t possibly go into every Workbench submission or posted WiP and start helping people with their TASing about a game I do not care about in the least.

I suggest that you try to be less hostile towards literally everyone else on this website.
I don’t think that was that bad of a message. I didn’t even swear or insult anyone directly. Also, you’re one of the few TASers I respect, don’t be mad.
You claim yourself to be the only person TASing intelligently on this website, which I hope is simply an exaggeration you used to get the point of bad optimization across.
Of course it wasn’t meant to be taken literally.
Masterjun wrote:
I call it an exaggeration because it seems like this claim is plain wrong, as you did nothing to prove it.
Just because I haven’t submitted that many TASes to the site (my only one, SM64DS, got DS TAS of the Year award, btw) doesn’t mean I haven’t proven it. Have you seen my Tenchu WiP? I saved like over 10 seconds over the course of starting menus and a single level compared to the published TAS. What about my Mega Man ZX WiP? It took me a lot of effort to figure out a perfect RNG manipulation and save over a second on the first boss compared to the published TAS. If I actually was motivated to do anything, this site would be flooded with my amazing TASes.

Now, instead of losing faith in other TASers, how about you think about the one way of TASing that is even better than competition: collaboration. Instead of letting other people figure something out, try working together, sharing ideas and pointing out mistakes in a direct manner, without letting your ego get in the way.
Collaboration takes motivation, which I don’t have. Letting others figure out tricks for themselves allows them to level up as TASers. The trick I’m using is nothing obscure and should really be on a tutorial page of this website somewhere.

See, you should change your attitude towards everyone else on this website. You should try to see things from another perspective, from another point of view. It would have made you realize that everyone else on this website might be upset about being told that they don't TAS intelligently.
I’m sorry if they’re upset but it’s a fact. I also get upset when I see suboptimal TASes, so it’s reciprocal.

Found a new strategy on level 2, goes over empty squares only 6 times (as opposed to 8 times), which saved 19 frames. My ending trick only saved 1 frame for some reason, so 20 frames saved on level 2 and 3 frames saved on level 1 (with the ending trick). Old file loaded level 3 at frame 1411, mine at 1388. Edit: Saving 2 squares and saving an odd number of frames (19) makes me think I TAS’d so well that I actually lost a frame in this easy game, lol. Will double check. Edit: Or maybe arandomgameTASer or whoever did it before lost it. Edit: Or lag is dumb. Each square is 8 frames, so I saved 16f from strategy and 3 from random lag, I suppose. Tied my TAS time unassisted except for the last frame because that trick is impossible RTA. So yeah I don’t think this game can really make for an exceptional TAS, unless the level end trick alone is enough to consider the TAS as standing out compared to an RTA, lol.

Try and figure out the trick instead of getting mad over nothing. Edit:

Like the way you're acting right now? That's what you get when you run BizHawk on a system which doesn't have any support. Upgrade to 7 or 8.1 or 10 already. >.>
What are you even talking about.

There is a trick you can do to save ≈ 3 frames at the end of each level. I’ll let you guys figure it out because it saddens me to see that I’m the only person TASing intelligently on this website. Don’t make me lose faith in other TASers more than I already have. I also think I have a better strategy for level 1 that’s 1 square faster but haven’t TAS’d it yet. Edit: TAS’d and it loses ≈ 3 frames because you have to wait for the AI to move out of the way. Good job on the strategy, Really_Tall. I’m having troubles dealing with savestates on BizHawk btw. It kinda feels like how PSXjin uses them and that is a terrible system.

I have no idea what I’m doing. I got Visual C# 2010 Express Edition. I downloaded BizHawk-Release.zip from the Github or whatever, extracted it. Opened BizHawk.sln on Visual C#. Threw a bunch of errors at me: “Solution folders are not supported in this version of the application. Solution folder 'Client' will be displayed as unavailable.” also for 'Emulation' and 'Bizware'. Then I start debugging. “There were build errors. Would you like to continue and run the last successful build?” I say yes. “A project with an Output Type of Class Library cannot be started directly. In order to debug this project, add an executable project to this solution which references the library project. Set the executable project as the startup project.”. What should I do.

I don’t remember other things breaking. It was Japanese games before I changed to Japanese locale.

And how do I debug it? I got Visual C# 2008 Express Edition. Tried going back to Italian locale and running a re-downloaded BizHawk, no change.

My system is kinda different. I’m in Japanese locale. For example, backslash (\) shows up as a Yen sign (¥) for me in places like folder names. I might have modified something else as well since I’m heavy on customizations like that… Re-downloading https://github.com/TASEmulators/BizHawk/releases/download/1.1.1/BizHawk-1.1.1.zip from http://tasvideos.org/BizHawk/ReleaseHistory.html#Bizhawk1111 didn’t solve the problem.

So for example in level 1, what determines whether the AI goes left or up? If it’s not RNG it should always default to going left I presume. If it could go up, there would be a better strategy keeping in mind that the AI follows you.

The perfect solution for the first stage is going right, taking all the outside dots, then the center from the left (right, down, left, up, 1sq down, right). With the enemy behaviour in the encode this wouldn’t be possible, but is it maybe possible to manipulate the RNG or just wait for a better value at the main menu?

Level 1 strategy already looks wrong. At 0:06 in the encode instead of going down and eating 1 thingy, go straight to the right and eat them all from the bottom. I like the game. I love puzzles. I think this deserves perfect solutions. Meh vote. Edit: Oh, it probably looks no different from unassisted runs though, so that’s kinda against the rules? I guess?

Version rules honestly don’t matter shit. Just pick whichever you feel like will create a better movie. That’s all you need to keep in mind.

I think it’s cool to show BIOS on encodes but if the TASer/player has to go through it as well that just sounds like a massive pain in the ass…
