I voted "yes" before reading the comments but they've changed my mind to "no"

ah right, hitting weak spots is almost useless edit: thought about asking that (the edit) but figured it'd be slower

this segment is fucking awesome, sir only thing, the battle with the alligator boss looked slow, can't you take a hit in to go behind his back to the weak point? or does he turn around too quickly for it to be benefitable? also I guess you tested this but, right after when you are in the water, it's not faster to jump out of it?

will wait for that encode sorry for the possibly dumb question, but how long will it take you to finish it at this point?

standalone map record: Fog Hunter 9" (578 in-game timer frames) 1" improvement over human record tied between SwifTy, Starkiller, ALAKTORN (me), STL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJc0hWO9HlQ should be maxed me and STL might plan on doing a TASVideos.org-friendly Campaign TAS

I liked watching this. It's a nice concept movie. But this movie is just like a playaround and I don't think low-score is an exciting category, compared to a true playaround. low-score = You can only perform walljumps and moonwalks and may not jump on enemies or get powerups. You need to wait a long time in 5 levels. playaround = You can perform all kinds of tricks and jumping on enemies or grabbing powerups has more variety to it than it was the case in the low-score movie. I can only point to this movie again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leH7IU4yOWE My point is, despite having liked this movie, why accept this category if a true playaround has a lot more potential and will be much better?
agreed on another note, wtf, I thought doing walljumps was supposed to be hard?

I played the hell out of this game back in the day, and I remember being able to skip the battle animations by pressing a button, and I also think that there might be an options setting to skip them automatically.
that's only possible in the other modes, Field Training is kind of a tutorial and you can't skip any animation

yeah I've also been wondering about Naval Forces's strategy, I didn't really comment on it because I don't know how you make the glitch work, but it looked like you could've saved time if you tell me the specifics you need for the glitch, I can try to come up for a strategy too and I'd like the mention in the submission for the strategy, thanks

What I'm wondering is - if Naval Forces can be redone starting from that point, would the rest of the run be able to be spliced on after that point? I get the sense that if there's no actual action taking place things would be fairly deterministic.
try redoing Naval Forces?

I've recreated ALAKTORN's strategy under TAS conditions: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1810059268/advancewars-newfogofwar.vbm This saves 1515 frames over criticaluser's strategy.
wow, that's a lot more than I thought, almost half a minute

There a little thing I forgot to mention. on field training, damage range seems to be on a fixed value so you can't manipulate luck
that's true for many maps in AW1, I can confirm that actually, I believe it's also true for the whole Campaign (not sure about this, but I know of at least 2 Campaign maps where it's fixed) edit: nvm I take this back, it's only a few Campaign maps, not all all of War Room can be luck manipulated though

2. Persons who know the game probably knows some of the map. And you can turn off the transperency effects (Even though this shows an ugly sideeffect...) to get some light to the level. I just don't think it adds anything really entertaining to be able to see more of the level like that.
agreed

my last Field Training mission strategy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6ejc5LhzqQ edit: btw in AWDS a turning movement takes 1 frame more than a straight line IIRC, I don't remember the movements in your TAS but maybe you should take that into consideration

I've finally started watching your glitched TAS, and your strategy for the first training mission looks really bad, you make too many attacks, I'll try it and make a vid if I come up with something faster the glitch was awesome though you know what's fun? abusing this glitch gives you a score of 666 for all maps (when you don't use too many days at least) btw, did you choose the fastest path for the missions? I know a guy who knows the fastest path, he'll be online in 2 days, I'll ask him so you can check if you did the correct maps (or you could check on GFAQs or something I guess) edit: so I've made my own strategy for the first training mission, but I have no idea if it's faster or not, I avoid killing the Artillery and 1 Tank (I think that's 2 attacks less), and I also move the Recon only once on D1, so that's less movement as well, I'm gonna record it and you'll tell me if it's slower or faster just noticed you win on D6 while I win on D5, so mine should be faster edit2: amazing the vid will take over one hour to upload, my channel is http://www.youtube.com/user/abcdefghilihgfedcba if you want to check (6:41 PM Italian time atm)

M10: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3S6q4tpZQM edit: done M11 in 13", only 1" improvement over human record strangely, I thought at least 2, final time: 2:28, 32 frames away from 2:27 (human record: 3:16 by SwifTy) 6049 rerecords total, that's much less than I thought I'd make M11: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbgIEIQFRi4 edit2: just gave M1 a go for single record, got 206 frames (saves as 3 seconds), I know of another guy who got 3" with TAS but I don't know the exact frames, human record is 4" tied between SwifTy and Starkiller I believe edit3: now tied by myself too, also found out that I can save 19 frames on my TAS by starting the map in the 2nd Wave of Champion Course instead of Basic Course

TASing this game is such a pain in the ass, I have to plan what things to do so that the cursor doesn't end up 1 square away of the next target, and the day ends on top of the target I'll have to tap first next turn… I'm always busy lately and when I'm not I'm tired, trying to TAS M10 while tired was such a mistake, overseeing things and forgetting to do actions… I've TAS'd the first day 3 times and I'll have to TAS it again… sorry for the useless post, just wanted to let it out… omfg have to reTAS for the 4th time / or maybe not, I lose 2 frames but those are unavoidable… / ok wat you can tap the APC with 1 frame wait after loading, didn't know that, that makes this strategy lose no frames, but makes the TAS as a whole fail because I've always waited more frames… oh well

Additionally, input-end abuses are some of the most entertaining things on the site, especially the DKC ending. It's awesome that the player is so good he manages to not only beat the whole game superhumanly fast, he also sets things up so he can just *walk away* for the end of the final boss!
I don't think it's entertaining at all, I just find it boring to watch SM64's ending is entertaining, DKC not

it's funny how those scores don't beat the human records lol impressively quick though myself I find UtK2 a much better game, are there plans to TAS that?
Sometimes when aiming for high score, you're going to stand there, waiting for the guilt to create more wounds for you to heal, increasing score. When I watched a speedrun for XS (or just S, dunno) on Savato, he stood at the ending just saturing wounds while Savato made more, instead of finishing the operation so his score would reach the S/XS level.
sure, that's another thing, but there are no more wounds to be created in the first two missions, the only thing I believe non-TAS records do there is bringing up the vitals to the max you can wound the patient yourself btw, that allows for 9999s on some missions, it's generally frowned upon but people still do it

It doesn't matter because that's not when input ends.
personally I don't like the idea of "input ends" to consider a game completed, but in SM64 case it doesn't look bad so it's fine, otherwise I'd agree with beating the game faster instead of standing in one spot and waiting for the game to complete (DKC I'm looking at you)

I agree with you, jump dive looks cooler, I don't think we should bother with updating the run with that frame
