Done up to after getting back from the hell run, more or less. As expected there's not anything that could be noticeably improved while running around in the lava, since you are so limited. Only a few frames saved here and there. There are a few good timesavers before that though, and after. Speedbooster is pretty cool in this hack. Smv Avi

Wouldn't it be best to take the one at the first missile tank in that case? That's only a few seconds of a detour. But are you sure you could do the whole hell run with only an additional 50 energy? It looks like you'd need more than that. But then again I haven't looked to closely.

Implemented all the improvements. I think it's improved by about 110 frames in total, but after accounting for picking up another missile plus some other small luck-based things, it's 98 frames. It's about 6-7 frames faster to grab the missile from the second pirate if he drops it on the first frame, but I'd have to stall for 15 frames in order for him to drop one. Smv

I just remade that part and it looks like I saved 2-3 frames over my old version by doing the mockball. It takes the same amount of frames to reach the point where you unmorph, but you are a few pixels ahead when you do so, plus the speed of the mockball is kept while unmorphing, so when standing up after the passage you are about 11 pixels ahead with the mockball.

Goddamn, I forgot how frustrating it is to TAS SM. You never get done :P That's at least 5 frames of improvement, probably a bit more.

Here you go EDIT: Btw, how did you refill on one of those space pirates fast enough? I don't know how you'd do that without using a missile, and that would slow you down a bit after collecting the bombs since you'd have 1 less.

That's a really nice strategy for the first missile room, Hoandjzj. I didn't know the kagos were weak to missiles in this hack, I thought that they would be like in the original, where they take 10+ hits no matter what weapon you use. And I found an even better way through the room after that while redoing it :) All in all 100 frames where saved in those two rooms (more like 95 or something, I guess, due to having to refill one more misile). Made some further progress on the run, up to the point of taking the elevator after collecting Varia suit. Some pretty decent time-savers were found this time around. Does anyone have any ideas for improving the route? I'm not well versed enough with the hack to be able to think of anything. Skipping Varia would be nice, but it doesn't seem to be worth it considering how many more E-tanks you'd need. Smv Avi

This hack and Hoandjzj TAS inspired me to do the first bit of TASing I've done in over a year, I made a small WIP up until bombs are collected. Dunno if I'll actually continue with it/finish it, but it was fun working with. The possibility to re-enter somersault mode after breaking it is awesome. The banana grin on my face when I realized I could do multiple CWJ's in a row knew no limits :) Smv Avi Preferably download the Avi rather than watching it on the built in player on the site, since the video quality is significantly worse. And, apparently there's no sound on the recording... but I think it's watchable anyway. Also, this hack is pretty awesome!

...You know, now I'm not entirely convinced I would reject the run if it used the code at the start. It'd be like a New Game+ for Super Metroid, and that might actually be pretty fun to watch.
It'd look like this, more or less. Not too great. Without X-ray could be fun though.

(And really, Saturn, you should submit your Redesign TAS. You know people have been waiting for it for years…)
Yeah, the choice to not do this really bewilders me. It has pretty much got nothing but superlatives thrown at it since WIP 1. Maybe he got bothered by the improvements made by Kriole and wanted to do a new version, in which case I'm eagerly anticipating 2015.

Dumb question, at 7:11 in the Youtube run, Saturn uses a single bomb on the wall, instead of two that I customarily see in newer Super Metroid runs. Is this faster or slower or equal?
Apparently it's slightly faster, which shocked me a bit. Anyway, this is a fantastic, fantastic run. It feels very fresh, as it is quite different from any other run and lets you see places traversed with equipment you are not used seeing at that point. It is incredibly optimized, more so than any other Super Metroid run on the site, with plenty of deviously clever tricks and some real "wait, you can do that?" moments. A++ all around. Should it be published? I really, really want it to. But I suspect it will inevitably come down to choosing between it and one of the other two any% runs, and I have a hard time justifying it over either of those for reasons that should be obvious. But, if it can be published as a concept demo, or something of the sorts, I'll be quite happy and rate it somewhere along the lines of 10/9.5.

Wat Well that's... interesting. It could certainly be used to do a faster any% run. Skipping pretty much everything and going straight to Kraid, getting varia, one PB and enough E-tanks to break in to LN (2-3?), then rofling all the way through the rest of the bosses skipping everything in your way. But even though this is obviously not a glitch I don't know how much I would agree with using this in a normal any% run, and a glitched one is of course still faster if done in the old fashioned way. Using it for a 100% run would be even sillier as you could get the game to say you have 100% without actually having collected everything. It'd still be interesting to see it used in a run though.

Reason for this specific story line - most people tend to think that this one's the hardest path, so yeah.
Do you have Hawk/Riese or Kevin as your main? Since you listed Kevin first I assumed he was, but Hawk/Riese's final dungeon and bosses are way harder imo.

Really great run. The stand out moment by far was the new endless staircase skip. I had always thought that it was amazing that for all the tricks and glitches you could do to get to the 70 star door early, if it hadn't opened to tease you with the endless staircase the game would still have had to be beaten with 70 stars (due to there not being anywhere to BLJ at the door). But as we can see here, sooner or later it would have been made possible anyway. Yes vote.

It's very impressive that you could improve such a tight movie for your first submission. I'm voting yes, as this category is too bizarre to bore me. I hope that you continue TASing as this is one of the most promising starts I've seen in a while.
He has TASed Super Metroid for a bit (though I don't really know how much since afaik he mostly hangs in Japanese forums), and he discovered a couple of cool and creative tricks that have then been used in published runs. So he's not a complete newbie :P Yes vote on this btw, such a silly run.

I missed this. I think this is the first run of mine to get directly obsoleted by someone else than myself, cool! I never thoguht this much time could be saved in the run, very good improvement.
