Yeah I lied. Someone asked me how big (byte-wise) the avatar was in the irc channel, so when I had checked that there was little point in not resizing it right now. I wonder if it will get deleted without warning again :)

UPDATE!!!! I have now watched Leon. I thought it was great, I especially liked Jean Reno in it. Tomorrow I will watch Sin City unless I find another movie I'd prefer, I'll try to find some others. feitclub, thanks, I was unaware of that. I thought he directed something like one third of the movie. Oh well. And for my avatar fans: I'll try resizing it tomorrow, if that's the problem.

Maybe because you mistakenly made it 81X82 or something like that. That's what I remember it being. I guess when you cut it down to size in paint, you missed. And obviously you should go with moozooh's choice since he responced so quickly. And how did Star Wars Episode 1 make it on the list? I don't care if you like Natalie, nothing could save that movie.
I feel like an idiot.
Go Fabian some mario. That should reduce your feeling of idiodicity. If nothing else, seeing me make up such a silly word should make you feel better.
About avatar: I thought it was 80x81, although you might be right. Still though. About Star Wars: I don't know about this one, although the movie of course is terrible, a jedi is still a jedi. Am I right? (This is a joke). However, Natalie is still Natalie, and that's not a joke. About Mario: I'm in a tricky room right now (the climbing room in castle #4), and I'm not sure how to proceed yet. So I'm avoiding it as much as I can :) I think the movie of choice will be Leon, despite some mixed opinions here.

Yeah I know I'm being weird about it. I don't really know why, and don't get me wrong, of course she's super hot, but others seem to like her more than I do. I'm still undecided by the way, so here I sit watching some Mega Man video instead. I feel like an idiot. Edit: I don't know. Maybe Bisqwit removed it because it was too large? If so, ugh.

Nope, just kidding haha! Here's what I really wanted to ask. Tonight I have the following movies I could watch: Sin City (never watched) Leon (American title is The Professional I think. Have watched once, about 5 years ago) Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace (have watched once, about 5-6 years ago) National Treasure (never watched) Sin City: Don't know a lot about this. Not as huge a fan of Jessica Alba as most, the same goes for Tarantino. Leon: I thought this movie was very great when I watched it, but I don't remember alot of it. Also, Natalie Portman. At this point I think this is the most likely choice. Star Wars I: Mentioned mostly because I've watched the other two prequels with my sister recently. And also, Natalie Portman. Yesterday I watched Closer and V for Vendetta by the way. I love Natalie. National Treasure: I've heard good and bad things about this. I'm not sure who to believe. Ok so based on the information you've got here, which movie do you think I should see tonight? Thanks. Also, my avatar is gone :( Edit: Also, feel free to recommend me movies in general. I've decided to start watching more of them. Thanks again.

Yeah Fabian you're right I timed it out and the pipe method is 1.6 seconds slower for me (see SDA topic). Two questions I have for you (or anyone else): 1) What is the best way to attempt to replicate the "fast flying" on console? 2) What is the best way to attempt to replicate the "hopping glitch" on console (if it's possible to replicate at all, not really sure)? Thanks
1. Unfortunately, this is pretty much impossible. When you start flying and let go of -> (assuming you're flying to the right), depending on exactly which frame you let go off ->, Mario will be flying at slightly different speeds. Sometimes you can see or "feel" a difference between the very fastest and the very slowest, but mostly it feels just the same. If you do ever feel you're flying very slow, tap lightly on ->. This would "randomize" the speed again, hopefully resulting in something faster. 2. This is pretty much impossible too. What you want to do is, while in the air (jumping), release -> when Mario's speed is slightly faster than it is when holding -> continously. That's the first problem, you can't be sure if you released -> on the correct frame, just like with the fast flying. Problem number 2 is from that point on, you need to jump on the very first frame when hitting the ground, every time. Missing just one jump with one frame will cause a slowdown throughout the entire level. The fast flying speed can have a pretty big impact. I would guess that worst possible flying and best possible flying in every level of the run would cause a difference of maybe 5-6 seconds or something. JXQ would probably have a better guess, having worked on the 11 exit run. But as I said, unfortunately this can't really be controlled in a console run. If you have any other questions I'd be happy to help out. Edit: Actually, the best way to "attempt to replicate" fast flying would be this, in my opinion: If you release -> exactly one frame before Mario goes into cape animation mode (that is, after his initial liftoff, just as he's beginning to fly regularly), he will have maximum flying speed. Of course, being wrong one frame will cause him to have the slowest speed. This isn't something I would recommend trying, since it's just too difficult, but it probably is technically the best way to "attempt to replicate". Sorry I can't be of more help.

Very interesting. I'll try it out and come back with my thoughts. Edit: Here is what I tried out. As you can see, I didn't grab the extra feather, so this doesn't prove anything. However, this was 72 frames slower than JXQ's 11 exit time (1788 frames to 1716), and slowing it down further to get the feather doesn't seem worth it for the TAS run. I do think this sounds like a very good strategy for the console run though, since getting the extra feather quickly in SW4 should be very difficult. Note, though, that even though this was a 370 (and only a few frames away from a 371), it's still quite a bit slower. The time spent in pipes is longer than one might expect. Edit 2: Just to clarify, I don't actually know if your strategy would be faster in a console speedrun either, it just sounds like it to me without knowing exactly how quickly you can get the feather in SW4. Just wanted to make it clear that the regular strategy very well might be faster on console as well.

Thanks! I call it Abstract Painting #1. I'm very happy with it. You're right that inspiration for the background colour comes from the desktop wallpaper I was using, thanks for that.

Great post. I was thinking about doing the same thing. Edit: I mean, just because entertainment is more important than speed doesn't mean we have to discuss it this much.

dtm, My post was meant to imply I thought you were in fact nate (of SDA and m2k2 fame), disguised as a tasvideos forum member. If I failed to make that clear I'm sorry.

I think you're wrong about this. A good analogy would be how "speedrun" is a bad description of the movie we make here, since the primary goal of our runs is entertainment. So there you go.

This is a very accurate observation in my opinion.

I'm pretty sure I have it buried somewhere. I'll look for it, hold on. (If I don't, I would think JXQ has it). Edit: I didn't actually have it. I have all the old .smv files though, so if JXQ doesn't have the zip file either I'll go through all the files and make a new one for you. Can't help you with the level maps, I guess you could open the game in the SMW level editor thing SDW was made in?

And I'm wondering why it still hasn't happened. It's not likely the others have the same reason as I do. This is the only case where that applies. There are no other movies that are not being published despite having been encoded. (At least that I know.) It is not a general direction.
I'm curious about the reason behind this.

Warp beat me to the punch. I was thinking about posting something about how speedruns are a subset of TAS movies and how they need to be differentiated, but I can't picture it doing anything more than blowing off steam. Qlex, I appreciate your efforts to make peace, but I don't think the people who still want more from us will ever change their minds. Feel free to keep trying, but the Bisqwit is pretty clear that we don't need to change and Nate is pretty clear that we do. I don't see you getting anywhere with this, other than getting on some people's bad sides.
I like that name, the Bisqwit. From now on, anyone who wants to call me the Fabian, please feel free to.

This debate is getting boring to me so I'm going to try to get this topic back on track. Here's the current topic in #nesvideos: "[S]NES/TASvideos! [This space for rent]" I'd like to have it changed to something involving me in the space-for-rent space. I'm not sure exactly what, but I'm sure we can figure something out. I'll pay two European Moon Sheckles for 2 weeks of renting. Let me know, and also, suggestions welcome of course.
