New thought about Pipe Star World. If you brought two shells up there, would both shells be lost to the piranha? It seems to me that a double grab should be possible without a huge time loss, but then again maybe not. Might be something to consider, at least.

Forget what I said. When I joined this site it was VIPer7's SMW run and Michael's Super Metroid run that got me interested. Except for the newer SMW/SDW runs, those two are probably still my very favourites. I'd love to see the Metroid run finished, so there goes my new vote.
Sonic 1 is a very solid choice though. I think it's a shame Genesis games recieve so little interest in general on this forum, because I was a Genesis kid so I know some of the games from personal experience, which is not the case for any other emulator. Sonic 1 needs to be done and I can see no one better than JXQ to lift the curse.

Ah, the piranha plants. Takes you back to Crystal Cavern 1, doesn't it? :)
Yes, those 6 frames were what I was thinking of, good.
Unfortunately, when comparing our Bowser battle to VIPer7's and flagitious, it's 16 frames slower. I timed from entering the boss door to the last hit on Bowser, so I guess a reasonable explantion would be that for some reason SDW lags 16 frames more. Otherwise they must've hit the first and third koopa earlier, but I can't figure out how. Oh well.
About your next TAS, I liked the thought of a warpless SMB3 run if you're still considering that. Otherwise just let me know which you are thinking about and I'll help you decide/decide for you :)

I was just about to write an email to you about this, but now that you listed everything here I'll do the same.
The two additional timesavers I've thought of is to bring a shell in Pipe Star World to throw on the key block, and to duckfly from the raft in Bowser's Star World.
Also, when spinflying up to the improvable passage in Misty Castle, did you improve the flying in your latest version? It was improvable by a few frames, and I can't remember if this was discovered before or after you submitted this. I'm guessing before, but just making sure.
Edit: Oh and I forgot, I just timed my Bowser battle to compare to yours and the SMW ones, and the 120 exit is 61 frames faster, so it'll probably be closer to 6 seconds. Yay for improvements!

Lucky us the 96 exit SMW run wasn't 7 minutes longer then :)
Seriously though, I'm also very happy to see this got a star, thank you Bisqwit.
Also, you are correct that this showed how the 15 exit run could be improved. Misty Isle 1, 2, 3, Misty Castle, Pipe Star World, Bowser's Star World, Backdoor Star World, Bowser's Back Door and the Bowser fight are slightly improvable. Most of these are very small though and I don't think it adds up to very much.

I actually sort of agree with you. I suppose one of the points of having a hack section is that you can have weird stuff like this in there, I just feel bad for Super Demo World being grouped with things like this considering what a great game that (SDW) is :)

Misty Star World right now. You'll have to wait some more, but we're working as fast as we can.
Edit: Part of the reason why this will still take some time is that many of these levels in Star World and Big Boo's World are quite complicated. And there are lots of them :)

to Spacecow: There won't be another WIP until this run is finished and submitted.
to DK64_MASTER: Thanks alot! It's very appreciated. As for a final time estimate, I haven't thought about it but let me think... We've done exactly two thirds (80/120) of the exits unless I'm counting something wrong and the movie is just over 300,000 frames, so if that pace is kept up it would mean ~450,000 frames, or just over 2 hours. However some of the longest levels are still to come, like some of the Star Worlds and Big Boo's Tower. So perhaps something like 2 hours and 15-20 minutes?
I can't speak for JXQ of course, but for me, this will probably be the only speedrun I ever make. Most levels in VIPer7's run could be improved, but I think it's just too much work for too little result. It's still an awesome run. I'm even less interested in the 11 exit SMW run, I think it's up to flagitious to improve it if he wants to, after all it was he who discovered the new running technique.
Edit: And yes, it really is an amazing hack. SMW is one of my favourite games, but I think SDW is just so much better in every single way. Playing through this game for the first time was probably the best times I've had with console games.

Thanks Sketchie, we appreciate the kind words!
Just wanted to let you all know we're in Bowser's Castle now, meaning we just have the Star Worlds and Big Boo's World left to do.

If you try to play that level yourself you'll see how enormous the lag gets if the spike enemies aren't killed. This was much faster. (And it's Crystal Cavern 4 btw)
And Dehacked, the block with the P-switch in it is hit with the cape spin as early as possible. After that, you have to wait for a while before the P-switch can be grabbed/hit, so we stand still for a while. The reason Mario twitches is because the block tries to push him out, but the "walls" are solid of course.

It's very nice to see this much interest for the run. I was a little surprised with how little people seemed to care about it earlier. Thanks for your support everyone! You made me change my mind for now.
Here is our current run. This will very likely be the only WIP we'll release until the run is finished.
Note that the Ice World 1b, 5 and Ice Igloo levels are experimental at this moment, and shouldn't really be included, but I'm too lazy to cut them out. They will/might look very different in the final run.
I hope you'll like it, please let us know what you think! Enjoy.

I'm going to sleep now, tomorrow I'll be doing Sky World 6. If anyone can tell me how the sky colour shifting works (is the route VIPer7 took in his walkthrough the fastest for example?) that'd be great, that should save me some experimenting :) I haven't even looked at the level yet.

Hmm let's see.. Working from memory here. Other than every Ice World monster, I know for sure two of the three monsters in the volcano can drop magic refills. I'm not sure about the bird. On the way to the Demon King, I think most monsters can drop magic refills, definately the knights in armor and the ones in that labyrinth.
I also *think* the spear throwing pygmies on the way to Begonia (the dragon village) can drop magic refills, but I'm not so sure about them.
Those are all I can think of right now.
