For what it's worth, in my opinion this hack is excellent and should be added to the list of accepted hacks. I'm looking forward to your new run, catnap!

if we can't trust submitted SRAM files how can we trust what an IPS file does to the game?
Well as I said a specific .ips file should be used, not one supplied by the author of the run. If we just pick a .ips file and stick to it it's obvious that the movie would desync if another .ips file was used.

Also, it seems that the Japanese version goes faster do to the language, I guess. Since I aim for speed, there's another reason to use the original version...
I don't think there is an absolute policy for this, but personally I dislike using a different version to be faster. IMO it was a grave mistake to do MM3 with the Japanese version, it set a bad precedent. Of course, I'm not an authority on this.

I strongly vote for using a language patch. I can't imagine watching a multi-hour run when I don't even know what's going on. The techniques used in the FF6 movie for example are hard to follow even when it's in English! I say let's decide on a certain patch (and patch version) that everyone should use when doing a run. I don't think the updates for the patches can be so significant as to make the movie obsolete.

Any ideas for alternatives?
I don't know how many language patches there are but I'm sure there's one that's widely known to be pretty good. I don't see it as a problem that it's being updated, the version that's used could be made downloadable from the site.

Sucks it's on the original, I'm just not entertained at all when I can't see directly what's happening. Good luck to you on your run anyway.

This really brings back memories. I loved this game as a kid. Anyway, your movie is very low quality. Here's why:
First, you shouldn't have collected the money because it doesn't add anything to the movie but makes the score screen last a lot longer. Second, the constant spinning in the vertical sections gets real annoying real fast. Third, the level 3 boss should've been manipulated into coming down more often. Fourth, in level 5 (the construction yard) after a veritcal climb you collect some chests and don't get the screen moving as early as possible. Fifth (this is the biggest mistake you made), the boss battles look extremely bad. You don't shoot the bosses as soon as possible, you sometimes wait long periods of time before shooting again. You should be sure to shoot the boss exactly as he stops blinking and becomes vulnerable again.
I only watched up to level 7 or so but I'm with Xkeeper on this. Even though the game is extremely fun to play, it's not so fun to watch, mostly because it's very slow. I don't think anyone should attempt to make a TAS of it.

That's why the Glossary exists. FCEU isn't explained there separately but you can still ctrl+f it.

Hello hisatoki, always nice to see a new face. Do you know if there are any differences between the USA and Japanese versions? Can your time (5:28) be compared directly to Cheez's time (7:21)?

I think someone used to constantly vote "no" on all new runs. Can't point you anywhere specific, though.

My technical quality ratings depend on how perfect the movie looks, not necessarily how perfect it is. This applies to luck manipulation as well: you might have saved a frame by using some illogical trick (like stopping for a while), but it's still ugly in my book. I don't care about those few frames.

I haven't watched anything yet but I don't think I've seen anyone mention this: you can get Faerie Walnuts from the goblins right in the beginning of Fire Palace. It's their rare drop so it will be a bitch to manipulate, but if you can manipulate them from the first four goblins I think it would be worth it. EDIT: Oh, by fire palace I meant the place with the Fire Gigas, the one you kill to get Gnome.

Yay for SoM .smvs! I really think that this game has the most potential for a TAS out of all SNES RPGs. Using all characters efficiently and stacking their damage is sure to have awesome results.

Voting yes. I think this should obsolete the run on the site now. It's faster and more entertaining and a 1-player run does not offer anything this run doesn't.

But aren't the published movies supposed to be as near-perfect as possible (depending on the individual goals, of course).
Publishing a good but not perfect version of a run is one step closer to that. I don't think that this should apply to all games but a game like this (very well suited for TASing and needs a run but is very hard to make) should be kept on a looser leash. Besides, the run so far is already very entertaining.

"Test run" does not necessarily mean "not submitting"
I thought that's exactly what it meant :) Anyway, if you say it's publishable material, I'm with you. I also agree that it's good to have a first version published on the site so others will get a stronger motivation to improve it.

Also, since yes, this is a test run, Im going to just wait until daybreak and go from there, then once im done with the child segment, Ill work on it again.
And also, the name of the topic does kinda subtly hint that it's a test run.

Wrong. The goal should obviously not be entertainment, but speed! Sorry for the BagOfMagicFood post, couldn't resist.

I don't think the original run is on the site for historical reasons. I think that it was just the first Gradius run published and aesthetical runs are extremely hard to obsolete. How can you decide which run is better? Diman might do something better than Morimoto in his run but then again Morimoto could be better at some other parts. This is why speed is automatically the main focus of TASes: entertainment can't be measured subjectively.

The fact that Sin City so closely followed the content (and limitations) of its source medium speaks only of the screenwriter's and the director's limited imagination and lack of ability.
Or maybe it speaks for the creators' desire to preserve the feeling of the original work and make the movie familiar to people who were already familiar with the comic? Personally I think the part with Mickey Rourke was very good, I didn't really care for the rest.
