The problem is that newer games are so much longer and more intricate than NES/SNES/Genesis games and therefore take substantially longer to TAS. The possibilities for variation in route and tactics grow exponentially with 3D graphics and more options in terms of technique or execution. In the future, many games will probably take many months or even a year or two to optimize on the same level as 8 bit or 16 bit games, and the length will not only be a turn off for many, but very time consuming. Just think of games with rerecords of... I don't know, 300,000? So unless the TASing community grows greatly in a few years, we probably won't be able to TAS as fast or faster than re-recording emulation technology progresses on to newer consoles and newer consoles. Also, this community is a little older and perfers retro-gaming. I see little interest in taking on newer systems. For example, as Mukki said, "only the surface of N64 has been scratched." Part of that is due to less than ideal re-recording technology and probably lack of interest.

But the fact that left+right has effects had been brought up somewhere when zelda 2 movie was made (or being made, can't remember well).
Indeed! http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2606&highlight=Battle++Olympus+Zelda This thread documenting the left+right bug was written in 2005-07-12, so I wasn't the first one to find the bug. About a month or two ago when I stumbled on this glitch, I mentioned it in IRC while playing through the game at normal speeds on FCEU, and this seemed to spark some interest.

I've been following this run since it's inception, and it's turned out even faster than first anticipated. I'm glad you had the patience to stick with the project, because it turned out great. It's very entertaining, especially with the useful glitches. My favorite part is the olive collecting in the forest that uses the left + right bug to optimize time; this strikes me as quite ironic since I expected this scene to be the least entertaining to watch. Yes vote.

I've played this game for years, and this run is really impressive. I feel your pain with the luck manipulation for speed scrolls. I hate how the game forces (or almost forces) drops when you run lower than 3 keys, 50 magic/life/gold, etc.

Also, this game looks impossible. Shooting through random walls to form somewhat-plausible paths that cannot be determined short of a massive amount of trial and error. Gotta love the early NES games.
It's difficult and takes a lot of time to figure out where one has to go (or should go) for certain items (most importantly the crowns since everything else can be bought), but it's not much more puzzeling or random than "Legend of Zelda" or "Metroid."

I haven't seen a game torn apart this bad since Rygar or Rockman 1. Very fun to watch and almost perfect execution. Yes vote.

I was listening to Van Morrison when I was attempting to register for a game called Infantry ( http://infantry.station.sony.com/en/main.jsp It used to be independantly owned) about 6 years ago. I made my username 'Morrison,' and I've stuck with it now for some time.

That was pretty informative despite the fact that it didn't include everything. I'm glad I watched and/or listened to it.

Either way, this run displayed a different strategy and I enjoyed it even though it went so fast that I hardly understood what the hell the author did in realtime. Voting Yes.
Yeah, I definitely watched it in slow motion the first time!

This is so different from the current video, and I find it quite humorous! I put a yes vote down, but please keep both Monopoly videos.

Personally I wouldn't want subtitles, and I doubt that the current encoders would want to have to make multiple AVIs for time-attacks.

Mega Man 2 is my personal favorite with 1 and 3 close behind mostly for nostalgic reasons (I played Mega Man 2 a LOT as a kid).

I haven't read all the posts in this thread, so please forgive me if someone already mentioned this. Phil Cote's Castlevania in 11:41 should be starred! It's a popular and well known game/series. It has great graphics and a soundtrack to match. As far as NES games go, it's top notch. It's short, and fun to watch. It's played extremely skillfully (using enemy creatures as platforms, using holy water to it's upmost effectiveness to score whore and stun enemies, using Belmot as a critical strike weapon, using luck manipulation for extrordinary drops, demonstrates exceptional knowledge of enemy creature behavior, etc). And it was the video that introduced me to TASvidoes!

Okay, now I understand what you mean. I think it's a good idea, but I don't think it will ever be seen unless you write it up. :)

The FAQs are great. When I first came to the site, I read those; they're extremely informative, but it is pretty long. The new generation probably doesn't have the attention span for it (haha). A brief introductory paragraph explaining what TASes are placed at the top of the FAQ page and/or the "Movies for First Time Viewers" page could be helpful, but it's really not necessary. The FAQ's and these links:

already do a great job explaining what TASing is all about as far as I was concerned as a first time viewer.

The run isn't perfect, and I think that's a legitimate reason enough to keep it as a WIP. However, it's still the best OoT TAS out there and most people found it entertaining. I'm glad it was published and made into a video that I could enjoy. Future runs will no doubt obsolete this run, but I think it's a great starting point worthy of publication. Also, you shouldn't let TSA's trollbait get you all bent out of shape. Also, it would be nice to hear some thorough, constructive remarks instead of hostile ones.
